after reading sushi / japanese reviews, i came across a santa barbara list and started to get all nostalgic...but no one had edomasa listed... so i am here to give my review on how it was when i was living there for the last 6 years... one of my friends roommates was a waitress there and i was often invited to eat in the after hours if i agreed to pick her up after i was done with the state st crawl... my experience echos as such... around 3am, when they are all closed up for the night, the owner and employees gather together to eat and drink, like family... ok, well the ones who speak japanese really stay... the owner sits there and drinks and drinks... his mannerisms sent me back into time... the rookie waiter had to fetch his food and whatever else he wanted...usually followed by a slap to the back of the head for being to slow, even though he wasnt.. it was just old traditional japanese ways... the food was prepared by 40 year old japanese hands only with the occasional apprentice to help on the side... the selection of sake is superb... i am going to say that what you will find here is nothing different than what you can find at any typical japanese restaurant, for what they do, it is well done... never a sloppy moment and always consistent... it was the traditions and comfort that make this place a joy to visit when ever i am in the SB area... although it gets busy at the prime times for dinner so be prepared to wait a tad... read more

We like this place and come here frequently but the blonde Asian male host was extremely rude. We asked for the wait time and he responded with "30 minutes, but I don't have anything". We responded we would wait and that perhaps the bar would open up. His response was "no. Doesn't matter. It won't". For a place that opens late into the night and a large menu, it serves decent food. I particularly like some of their offerings, which include monk fish liver (as sashimi or in sushi, tastes like pate/liverwurst but with fishy flavor/scent), natto, uni, and sparkling jelly sake. Their shrimp tempura is quite crispy and flavorful, and their curry is flavorful too. The ginger beef wasn't gingery enough for my tastes though. read more

I love coming to Edomasa because it's one of the few places in SB open late night. It's a very casual place and has very good prices. I like the veggie combo it's around $12 for a veggie roll, 1/2 a avocado roll, 1/2 a cucumber roll, miso soup, cucumber sunomono (which tastes a lot like my obachan's) and mochi!! We love edomasa and frequent at least once/week, usually on the late night. I have been eating here for close to 15 years. We always get great service and the fish is consistently fresh and well prepared. We order mostly rolls and sashimi/sushi, but have had their chicken Katsu and a few other cooked/non sushi dishes that were also tasty. We love that they are open late and even towards the end of the night the servers are friendly and upbeat. We rarely go anywhere else for sushi! This is a go-to, comfort food place for my boyfriend and I. They're open super late compared to the rest of Santa Barbara, and they offer such a wide variety of delicious, authentic Japanese food. I usually get the oyako don or the sukiyaki don with chicken, and both are just amazing!! And when I do go out of my comfort zone and order anything else on the menu, i'm never ever disappointed! All the waiters and waitresses are busy, buzzing around trying to serve everyone, but still very friendly! The service is very good, by the way. They open at 6 p.m. and their busiest times are usually around 8-10 p.m. especially on the weekends, but if you go around that time on a week night, it's very laid back and lovely. This is definitely a place to check out if you're ever in the area and craving Japanese meals that can accompany sushi rolls. read more

The service here is insaaaanely fast! I swear if it'd been any faster, they'd have my food ready before I even got the chance to order, lol. All jokes aside, the service was great, and the food was fantastic. Seemed very authentic. I got the Marina roll, which was delicious (but could've used a little more avocado in my opinion) and the gyoza, which was super well seasoned and well cooked. I also highly recommend the yakitori. I went here on a Saturday night with a party of 7. The service was horrible, our waiter hardly checked on us and just mumbled to us. No one understood him. And he didnt even put the plates infront of the person that ordered them, he just put them down on the table. Really?! The food was ok, not anything special. One of the rolls that we ordered had a bad taste to it, I'm thinking maybe I just didnt like it. Overall, I wouldnt go back here. Great place, great food, great staff! When we went there, we thought it's gonna be a mediocre Japanese food because there are so many items on the menu and it opens til 1am. But, we were wrong. We ordered the beef ginger entree that comes with cucumber-seaweed salad and mochi ice cream, fried shrimp curry, monk fish liver, and sparkling jelly peach sake. All so delicious! My friend and I went to Edomasa last Statuday, and the experience was awful. I don't normally write negative reviews. Usually, if I don't entirely enjoy my dining experience at some places, I'd just avoid going there. However, my dining experience at Edomasa last Saturday sucked so bad that I feel it is necessary to make a note of it. The food was bleh, and the service was terrible. We sat there for 15 minutes and waived twice to finally have our server to take our orders. Our server was not attentive at all, and it was not even a very busy night. We had to constantly ask the busboy to have our sever over. Later that night we asked the busboy (since we couldn't get our server over) if he could be a sweetheart and go ask our server if our order comes with a complementary dessert, we were left sitting there with no replies for 10 minutes. When our server finally came over, she cavalierly told us that we should read the fine prints on the menu carefully ourselves. By that point, we were just all so disappointed and ready to leave the restaurant. On our way out, we informed the owner that there're issues with the services. The manager/owner replied that if we want a discount we need to inform him that there's a problem before we pay, since we had already paid, there's nothing he could do. After we made it clear to him that we weren't looking for refund or discount, rather we just wanted to let him know, he kept saying that there's nothing he could do at that point. I mean, what does he mean there's nothing he could do. The least he could do is to train his staff to treat the costumers nicely and with respects. Their attitude toward costumers absolutely repels me. It is so sad to see the food and service at Edomasa has sunken to this level, because it used to be one of our go to places for Japanese food. I guess it is safe to say that Edomasa is officially on the list of restaurant I refuse to patronize. read more

I must confess that I got sick after eating here. Sick enough to wake up and think I was having morning sickness and pregnant. I just don't do nauseous that often and since I happen not to be pregnant then Endomasa gets the blame. Instead of getting 6 small rolls - you get three big ones. Doesn't that just mean more rice and less goodies? I really wanted to like the place but something had to have been off in the food. OK, thank God for yelp. We knew we wanted sushi, but we didn't want to mortgage our home for it and we didn't know where to go around here. We saw good reviews for Edomasa on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. We were not disappointed. We did get there early and ended up having to park ourselves in the little neighborhood bar across the street (also a pretty cool place). Once they opened up for dinner, we were the first ones in the door and gorged ourselves. The service was fantastic, the sushi and rolls were amazing and the three of us ate and drank beer until we couldn't take anymore and still got out for under a hundred bucks. Stopped by here on a visit to SB from SD for some sushi without all of the extra pretentious atmosphere and all that. We liked the low-key, chill atmosphere here a lot and really liked the prices considering the prices of most of the restaurants around here compared to SD. We came in and were seated. We could tell immediately that these would not be the most attentive servers as they seemed a little out of it. We browsed the menu and saw many things that we were interested in. As for the special rolls, most of them were either tempura fried or baked or had crab in them. We prefer cold, raw rolls, and don't care for crab salad (especially if it's Krab salad), so we don't risk it. We got the Hip Hop Roll ($5.95), my wife got the Philly ($5.75), and I got the seafood salad ($10.50) and a miso. The miso came out first and looked very cloudy and flavorful. However, somehow they managed to make this soup completely flavorless. Seriously, this tasted like hot water and we thanked the Lord that we did not order the Ramen because it would probably be the same. The rolls came out next and were very big as others have noted and were five pieces each. Yes they had more rice than a normal roll, but they also had more fish. However, I would still prefer more, smaller pieces because they are easier to eat. The Hip Hop roll had great flavor between the salmon and tuna and the avocado evened it all out very nicely. the Philly was a philly roll, if you've had one you've had em all...for the most part. Now, the salad was very good. it was a large sized salad with a very, very light sesame dressing, which really allowed the fish to shine. There was one large piece of each fish and it included salmon, hamachi, red snapper, tuna, seared ahi, shrimp and octopus. The octopus was pretty flavorless and tough, but not really rubbery. The shrimp was pretty unexciting. I don't tend to like snapper, but my wife and I enjoyed this piece. I've had more tender salmon, but this was pretty good, especially with regard to flavor. The tuna was also very good and had a great flavor. The seared ahi was the most tender piece of fish on the plate and literally melted in our mouths. it had a very subtle flavor, but was very good. And my favorite, the hamachi, was the star of the show with the best mix of amazing flavor, freshness, and tender, buttery-ness. Despite the pretty good food, the service was pretty weak. they dropped our soup off and took off without bringing a spoon and had to be chased down to request one as they walked past us ignoring our attempts get their attention. They never checked to see how we were doing and were difficult to get any acknowledgment from. Most of this was expected. What decisively knocked them down to three from three and a half stars was the sign that said a service charge of 5% would be added to all take-out orders. Talk about nickle-and-diming! So parking and finding this place is a bit tricky espcially at night But I'm guessing once you know where it is you can easily find it and also find ways to park on a busy night. We ate here on a Satruday afternoon and was pretty empty but by 8pm it was packed and carazzy. The sushi is pretty fresh. Shoot it better be you are in SB right next to the pacific ocean so there's no excuse for stale sushi. The teryaki beef was tender and tasty. Their specialty rolls were very well made. None of that sauced covered dont even see what was in side the roll type special. But honestly not sure if I would come back unless I've tried all the other sushi place around SB. read more

After entering the restaurant, I immediately noticed the large numbers stuck on the back of the chairs of the sushi bar area. I don't think that's very appealing to the eye, but I suppose that method makes food running easier for them. Anyway, we ordered the Baltimore roll and the Lobster roll. The Baltimore roll the first roll I ever had with cream cheese, and I must say that it was pretty decent. The Lobster roll was okay...after taking each bite I was immediately hit with a huge after taste of wasabi. I don't really care for wasabi, but if you do then this roll would be perfect for you! I don't really like how they charge you $2.50 for Miso soup. That is by far the most I've ever paid for it. read more
