We live in a 1920's craftsman house, which, while beautiful, can be a big challenge to deal with when things need to be repaired or replaced. We initially called Edwards Building Repair after Home Depot wasn't able to replace several of our old, round-top wooden windows (the dimensions were too odd for them.) A friend recommended Edwards, saying that they were a great local mom-and-pop business that had experience with all sorts of windows, including tricky ones in old houses. Joe did a great job of installing new, wooden windows that fit the style of the house perfectly. He also replaced some other rectangular windows for us, and has since come back to do glass replacement. He also recently came by on short notice to do an emergency repair on an old window that got stuck while open, and had to be partially disassembled to fix. Very professional business, with two generations of experience in windows and other repairs. Highly recommended. read more

This company rocks! Joe at Edwards Building Repiar is dilligent, capable, and thorough in his work. A good friend recommended them when I asked her if she knew anyone for screen repair. Joe repaired and replaced both my patio door screen and window screen and installed a set of blinds for the kitchen quickly and reasonably. I was greatly satisfied with the work, but the real test came on Friday 13th when my sticky patio door shattered into a million pieces when I tried to close it. Joe arrived within a couple of hours after the incident, cleaned up thoroughly and covered the door frame with mylar in less than an hour. Today, Tuesday the 17th, he and his assistant arrived with the completed door and replaced screen and got everything set up in half an hour. Went back down to San Diego to visit some friends to stay for Cinco de Mayo weekend.And we noticed that they were having their window screens on their condo complex redone.We didn't think anything of it. My wife then asked her girlfriend "Didn't you just have these done? I thought they were being replaced last time we were here. She then replied: you're right; they were. But what happen was: it was a different company. (It was a mobile company. Who would make them,and install them on the spot.) It was nothing but a nightmare from the moment they arrived. They were very unprofessional. It seems like they didn't know what the hell they were doing they didn't even have a ladder on their flatbed especially when they knew ahead of time that it they would be two stories that they would be working on. We found that to be very odd. She then told us that they didn't even have a drill to drill or hammer in the hardware to keep the screens into place. My husband and I were convinced that these unprofessional guys we're on there very first installation mission ever. Chris wanted to have them installed a certain way.(by having just a little space in between the sides so that you can lift them up so they wouldn't be so snug. So that you would be able to remove them and clean them) and what they did was install them so tight around all four corners (because they had no tools or the experience) that you wouldn't be able to do so. Not to mention, making three and five trips to their flatbed truck per window screen for resizing because they couldn't even get it right the first time that was parked across the street when specifically told to park in front of the condos before 9:00 a.m. so that you'll have parking for sure and that you're closer to the units otherwise you won't find any parking because it will be taken up quickly.(because the hardware was not installed) they said you didn't need them, the window screens then popped out; in other words, only three corners of the screen were secured while the 4th corner and a twisted frame was visible on several screens. Between the neighbors and us, we had over 32 window screens to be redone. Thank God they didn't have time to install more due to the lack of equipment an experience. They were going to return the morning to install the rest throughout the complex. Chris and the other tenants refused to have this fly by night Mobile screen company that is known to be one of the top companies redo their screens. So Chris called the Company and said: sorry, all the other owners chose not to have the rest of the window screens redone at this time; and that they'll have them redone at a later time. He just said that so that he wouldn't have to deal with them trying to come back etc. Then the following morning, they came by in person and said will do it for x amount if you have them done now. Chris said no. He basically said don't call us we'll call you. We then found Edwards screens. And they've done a beautiful job. We highly recommend them. My wife was so impressed with their work and workmanship and professionalism that she wants to have our window screens up north replaced by this company. So what we're going to do is, we're going to take measurements of our screens up north and call "Andrew"@ Edwards screens in San Diego and have them redone with brand new framework, hardware, etc. And when they're completed, we'll have another reason to visit San Diego. read more

Here's my caveat to today's review: Seven years ago, we paid several thousand dollars (and reasonably so) for Edwards to replace ALL of our South-facing windows, which had been thrashed by close to 100 years of SoCal sun on our old craftsman. These were historically-appropriate wood double-framed windows, plus sun-resistant wood-framed screens. I found Joe to be completely professional, pleasant and would have easily given five stars or higher for that experience. The windows were beautifully made. A few months later, a baseball met another window and Joe replaced the glass and gave us a nice price break. This is the kind of relationship a homeowner wants with a vendor (and vice-versa). When I have a plumbing problem, I call our regular guy and it gets fixed. I don't want to have to shop around. Cut to 2 or 3 years ago: We have four small windows on our second floor and I wanted them fitted with screens. Joe was unavailable and sent his father, who took one look and said, "I'm not going to get up a ladder to measure those, not worth risking a fall" and... that was that. I decided that for the time being, we didn't need to open those windows... But last week, a large, downstairs screen (not one made by Edwards) broke and I called Joe. I didn't tell him about his father but said when he came to pick up the screen, I would also like to pay him to make the four screens for the upstairs. He told me that he was working on a big job and while it was in my neighborhood, he'd be too tired to come by and wouldn't have his ladder with him. He said he'd call by the end of the week to schedule an appointment. I don't know if the current job is too small to be worth his while, but I myself work freelance, and the first rule for me is to never say no to a job, and never alienate a good customer who might be one again. He just never responded, so I have to conclude he's passing on the job. So I have another company coming on Monday. I just feel that there are other vendors and I shouldn't have to repeatedly ask someone if I can pay them for their work. If you have a huge job (in the $5-6,000 range), you'll probably have the same former experience I had and give 5 stars. But if you're a repeat customer, or have a smaller job, you might have the current experience and give 1 star. I split the difference with 3. read more

Called on Monday about a window repair on my place and was supposed to receive a call back for scheduling by Tuesday close of business. Never received a call back. Called on Wednesday to see if he could come by for an estimate and had to practically beg Joe to come by. What's the deal, dude? It's 5 minutes from your office - are you too good for your own neighborhood? He finally offered to stop by on his way in today (Thursday), then called me 10 mins after the appointment time to tell me he does not work on these type of windows (casement windows). Dude, just to let you know - I was planing on REPLACING ALL THE WINDOWS in the building - potentially a $10k job - and am scouting for an honest, reliable, reasonably priced window shop - I guess Joe at Edwards Building Repair is just not that guy... read more
