The place itself is unassuming, older and comfy, so atmosphere snobs should just stay away or plan on not complaining - just deal with it. (think of it as a 1950's diner-time-capsule) Besides huge burgers that measure easily 10-12" in diameter - they taste pretty darn good, too. Not the best burger in the world, but respectably good - they exceeded my expectations. Cooked fresh, and craftid with artison love (we sat at the bar and enjoyed watching the grill cook do his thing) its clear there's a lot of pride put into each and every burger. You can also order 1/2 burgers for those that still want a huge meal, but not the full experience. Burgers can be ordered with single or double patties (warning, am guessing each burger pattie has a good 1-2 poundsof beef in it) - buns tasted great, too - perfectly toasted and fresh. Effies is packed with local villagers, many who seemed to know the waitstaff well - clearly frequent loyalists. Large portion Mom and Pop kind of place. I had the double. Fluffy face sized buns, 2 lbs of local ground beef, and piled high with fresh veggies. We went in on a Thursday evening, and there was one waitress running around. Their menu can fit on the back of a post-it note, so the decision making process didn't take too long. This place is a dive with friendly people and a large flat top. The only sad part about this place was that there was no Effie Tavern Challenge like you see on the TV shows. Took my boys here as a surprise. They ordered the burger with ham, onion rings, cheese and bbq sauce. It was of course HUGE. It had a perfect mix of sweet relish and dill pickles. They cut the burger in 1/4 and could only eat a 1/4 each. Erroneously we ordered a medium seasoned fry and onion rings. They were delicious, but too much food with the burger. read more

I thought that I had an understanding about what a perfect burger was until this afternoon. As my parents were visiting today, we went to Effie's to try something new. I was deterred at first by the humble appearance of the place from the street and that was a mistake. We were greeted as we entered by a friendly voice and an invitation to sit where we wanted. We sat at a booth and the server brought us menus. I was pleased to note that there were more than burgers and my dad and I decided to split a half order of chicken gizzards. We then ordered our burgers. Dad ordered the cheeseburger, Mom chose the Hot Effie, and I opted for the New Effie. I cannot express in a strong enough sense that, unless you are ravenously hungry, a half burger is plenty! The regular burgers measure 8 inches in diameter and weigh in at 1 pound. The burgers all come with the standard toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickle, and mayonaise. The Hot Effie comes with jalapeños, bacon, and pepper jack cheese. The New Effie has ham, grilled onions, and grilled mushrooms. I added pepper jack cheese as well. Dad chose American cheese for his cheeseburger. We also ordered a medium basket of tater tots to share. Dad and I also ordered iced tea to drink. The drinks came first and I was so happy with the iced tea. They brew it fresh every day and served it au natural and it is perfect! They are generous with refills as well. The gizzards were perfectly cooked. Too often gizzards are overcooked and become chewy and inedible. These were just right with just the right amount of breading. The only drawback was that there was no hot mustard available for dipping but the honey mustard was a suitable substitute. The burgers came and we were all happy that we had ordered half burgers. The burgers were cooked beautifully; juicy and well-seasoned. The toppings were fresh and the hot toppings were nicely done. What impressed me, though, was the bun! They are made locally at Rosauers and were light and tasty while supporting the weight and thickness of the burger. The tots were nicely fried and just right in crispness. A medium size order was plenty for three middle-aged adults or a perfect half order for a teenager. In all, I recommend Effie Tavern to anyone looking for a great burger and friendly atmosphere. I'll be back but only when I am hungry again in two months. read more

Food is good as are prices. Burgers are huge. Staff are pleasent and easy to get along with. Love stopping in for my 34 downs. Only draw back is parking. I was passing thru Lewiston Idaho and remember my previous stop at Effie Tavern some 5 years before. I had my mom and sisters along with my wife and I told them be prepared for the biggest and most delicious hamburgers around. The portions of fries is also huge. It's a cute little place; very clean and well kept. I felt bad for the waitress though as she was the only one and had to take care of all of the tables by herself. Still she passed by our table multiple times and never once checked with us on how our food was or if we needed more drinks (which we did). I got a half burger which was sufficient enough since their burgers are humongous! Burger was pretty good; a little burned but I didn't mind. Today I stopped by Effie's to have a beer. I have been customer for years and always had nothing but good experiences. There was a couple who did not complain about their order until they came to pay. They were incredibly rude to the waitress, who tried her best to correct the problem. What is wrong with people? If you do not let someone know you need to have a problem corrected, how can you expect them to be able to provide good service? These people obviously did not want a resolution, they just wanted to bitch! Long story short. If you don't like your food, send it back when it can be fixed. The burgers are HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE and delicious. One of the things I wish I did before I tried out this place was to fast. It's definitely a meal that will take a couple of days for you to finish. Not only are the burgers amazing, their fries and tater tots were also very nice and crispy. As an occasionally meat-lusting vegetarian, I had to give in to the reasonably priced and sinfully delicious, humongous monster burger. It was worth the guilt. In terms of the atmosphere and service, this place has a local small town divey vibe that I enjoyed. The staff were super friendly and attentive to our needs. Great service in this tiny place. I decided to eat here for the experience (saw pictures on Yelp), and the burgers are great! Of course I ordered the big hamburger (1 lbs patty) because who wouldn't!?! Seemed like everyone was sharing the giant burger, but I was all by my lonesome, so I gave my leftovers to some teens walking by. Tater gems were great! Effie Cheeseburger was tremendous! No B.S. here. Simple, big, delicious burgers, fries, onion rings (to die for)! Prices are very fair if you can appreciate great quality food. We rarely "go out" for burgers, and when we dine out, I appreciate food I can't make at home...and I'm a good cook. Compared to Effie's, everything just seems like fast food. You can get fancier burgers at some local places, but this is the most incredible, purist burger around. Described by others as a "Dive", but in a good way. That's how I'd describe it as well. Not the most desirable part of Lewiston, and parking is only available along the sidewalk. We parked in the Fastenal parking lot across the street as it was a weekend and their parking lot was empty. Upon entering this tavern, you'll most likely find the relatively small establishment brimming with patrons. Old tables, old chairs, and a bar that seats 6. Our group was 8 people so we ended up seated in the billiards section and splitting up. You walk right past the grill where the burgers are being prepared. Once seeing the colossal beef patties you'll quickly decide to split a burger with your friends. We split on 3 ways and it was plenty. The prices are extremely reasonable. Draft beer is $2. Soft drinks (available in cans only) are $1. Best part was, the burger was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly. A great experience for all and we'll be back. I just moved to the valley and my buddy was raving about this place. I am a foodie, so I was super stoked to try this place that sounded like it was straight off the food channel on one of those hole-in-the-wall shows. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed here. Not only were the novelty, giant size burgers not very flavorful, but the giant size bad attitude of our server was a huge turn off! I think her scowling and impatience was supposed to be part of the dive experience, but she just took it too far.
