What has happened here? We have been loyal customers of Efrains for more that 30 years, It was our "go-to" neighborhood, Mexican restaurant, traveling up from Arvada. Our last few visits have been very disappointing, to the point, that I don't think that I will return! We were there last evening for dinner. We initially noticed their NEW menu, with an increase in their prices & fewer items on the menu. I ordered a Chicken Chimichanga, which has historically been my favorite selection. My family and I came here last night, but unfortunately we didn't stay. While we were seated as soon as we came in, as soon as we sat down we all instantly realized the lights blaring above us were truly awful. And then they brought out the chips, which no joke were the worst tortilla chips I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant- where did they go wrong? We stopped in for a late lunch on a Monday afternoon & there were still quite a few people in the restaurant. Mexican music was playing in the dining room with only tables and padded chairs to sit at, no booths. There is a parking lot & an outdoor patio which could be great in warm weather. Note, they are closed on Tuesdays. We were seated right away & our server immediately brought over complimentary Tortilla Chips & Salsa. Both were good - the salsa was mild & the chips were good too but needed some salt. Service was okay, we did have to wait awhile to get our food after ordering & to get our check to pay. We ordered two combination meals. The first was two Cheese Enchiladas & one Beef Enchilada. The sauce on the enchiladas was great, very flavorful - nice & spicy and the cheese enchiladas were delicious with lots of cheese. We didn't care for the beef enchilada since it had shredded beef not ground beef. (We were expecting ground beef & didn't ask beforehand.) The other combo was a Cheese Enchilada, Chile Relleno & a Beef Taco. The Chile Relleno was very tender & cheesy. The Cheese Enchilada was good as in the other combo. The Beef Taco was disappointing as it had shredded beef & was soggy. We also had a side of rice & beans that lacked seasoning & was bland. Fabulous dinner on the porch, tasty margaritas, quick & attentive service, excellent food (just wish they had ground beef, but that's just me). We had the crispy shredded beef tacos. Cheese enchiladas dinner, and vegetarian nachos. All arrived with a TON of food, great value for the buck & tasty entrees. Haven't been here for years. Nd we were excited to com back. Nothing has changed or been updated in the restaurant do it really needs some TLC - totally fine as long as the food is amazing. Unfortunately, it was not like we remembered. The chili was very watery - to the point that it kind of ruined the plate. The flavor was good but too watered down. Our service was good and he was attentive. Probably wouldn't cone back but hope they make it a long time. They've been a staple for many years. read more

We heard good things about this place, and were a bit underwhelmed. The staff was friendly but service was rather slow. The food was decent. I liked the chips and salsa they serve complimentary. I ordered an enchilada and taco. The beef was really good, definitely recommend that meat option in your meals. It's shredded beef (instead of ground). I had not been to Efrain's in Lafayette for an extended period and sought it out before attending a Louisville Street Faire rainy night. Lafayette has a fun downtown area, plenty of options, parking, and safe surroundings. Luckily, they did not have a wait on a Friday night, snaring the lone available table after quickly getting a parking spot in their private lot. Efrain's always had a good neighborhood vibe, and this was no exception--average noise level. Excellent service from the onset, chips and their terrific red salsa on our table within minutes, and then a guacamole order to add to the appetizer! Our server was so pleasant and helpful and was kind throughout the visit. I ordered the Steak San Lorenzo, veering from my usual Mexican food choices, and I am glad I did. I moved out to CO from East LA a year ago and I've tried a metric TON of Mexican food here. Needless to say, I've always been extremely disappointed. That was until I stopped in by Efrains on a whim. I ended up ordering the Tamales from here and having a couple margaritas. The service has been adequate - nothing to write home about - but positive none the less. The Tamales though? Phenomenal. Moist, smothered in pork green chili. Beans and rice actually really damn good. The margs? Its hard to mess up a margarita (I bartended for years at a margarita bar myself) and they were definitely amazing for the price! If you are finding for some good Mexican food, definitely come here. Reading previous reviews, service can be hit or miss, but to be honest - I could care less. If the food slaps, it slaps, and it's difficult to find great Mexican food in Colorado. I'll be coming by Efrains weekly from here on out to try more off the menu, leaving more follow up reviews as I eat my weight in - what has been thus far - a taste from my East LA home. read more

Came by for lunch. Efrains has a patio outdoors that was pretty full. The bar area has some large TVs with a crowd watching the game. Interior was large but most of the restaurant was sitting outside. The menu is large with the usual fare. They have some creative options like the Efrains burrito which seems like a wet burrito with the chef's choice of everything. Food was solid but pretty typical fare. Prices were pretty reasonable for the portion sizes. Queso came in a huge portion but was a little grainy. Service was very very friendly but a bit forgetful. I hadn't been here for several years, but it was pretty much what I remembered. The food isn't anything fancy or creative; it's filling decent Mexican-American classics. We shared the chili verde and rellenos, both were flavorful and well made, I'd happily recommend both. The service was friendly and attentive at the end of a busy Friday night. I love the Efrain burrito smothered in chili Verde. It is my favorite Mexican dish I have ever had. I live in California and every year I visit Colorado I stop by this location and get an Efrain. It is a glorious mix of multiple meats, rice beans and cheese, smothered in the best Chili Verde in Colorado.It is on the spicy side but if you like spicy food it has the perfect amount of heat. I am rather shocked by so many bad reviews. This is the best Mexican restaurant food wise in Colorado. The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is because the place needs a huge makeover. It needs new chairs flooring, booths you name it. Also, servers appear to have way too many tables and it is hard to order another drink or even get your check. The food, however, is top notch. We were seated in a back room with unpleasant too stark lighting and no attempt to decorate or make it nice, with just bare walls and institutional overhead lighting. I asked the waitress what she recommended and she said blue corn enchiladas. She pointed to a picture that showed sour cream and avocado scoops on it. When the food arrived the scoops weren't there and she said she pointed to a picture that wasn't our meal, but she'd get us the scoops at no cost, although what she supplied was only enough for one person. After 5 bites my dining partner and we both admitted it was horrible. The waitress didn't come back for a long time so we suffered through eating almost half before giving up. I was still hungry, but couldn't eat any more. How can you mess up Mexican food? Pretty hard to do and I can't explain what about it made it inedible except maybe a top end was missing on the tomato sauce, no tang and the dish was poorly seasoned mush and I'm a wimp who hates spicy sauce. My dinner date didn't care for it because it was bland. The tortillas were stacked on top of each other like a casserole which is a bad idea. It was like eating a partially cooked, slightly tough tortilla. I didn't realize it didn't come with rice and beans, perhaps because we weren't shown the right picture. When we kindly and respectfully shared that we didn't like the meal, the waitress said she was sorry a bunch of times, but it didn't feel heart-felt, just obligatory or habitual. She didn't offer to take anything off the bill even though our plates were still over half full. I won't be back and it's a lesson to self to never eat something I don't like, to be polite to my dining partner! LOL read more

Truly one of the many S-Tier Mexican restaurants in the local area putting many other restaurants to shame. It's fair prices and amazing value and taste immediately creates a stress free enjoyment and friendly staff make the night even better. The main entree my party of two ordered the signature "Efrains Burrito" which is just a completely random mix of ingredients that the chef sees fit. I had an insanely good heat to my meal, that wasn't overwhelmingly spicy but chose to reside on the flavorful side. It seems you either really like or dislike Efrain and I fall in the latter category.  I had not been there for a long time and went recently with a few friends after our attempts at other restaurants in the area were unsuccessful (all the other places were full or had a wait). Although Efrain was fairly busy on that Wednesday night we were lucky to be seated promptly and quickly greeted with chips and salsa. Unfortunately, the sauce was so watery that is stayed mostly untouched until I used it to try to give a little bit of flavor to my very bland taco salad. Efrain serves fairly basic traditional Mexican fare at a reasonable price, so even if I didn't enjoy my dinner, the bill was quite inexpensive. To be fair, the house margarita was fine and some of my friends seemed to enjoy their plates. Lastly, it didn't help that our waiter never checked on us or even refill our waters and was unpleasant when I paid to the point of being borderline rude; I assume he was quite unhappy to have each of us (5 total) pay with separate credit cards. Dear God where do I start? First of all, until last night, I hadn't been to Efrain's in Lafayette in probably twenty years. My then-wife and I went there one winter afternoon for lunch, and I swore I'd never go back again. It was dirty, the food mediocre, and well, that's about all I remember. Last night I had the unfortunate opportunity to go again. A dear dear friend was celebrating her birthday, so I manned up and gave them a second chance. I invited my wonderrful roommate to go along with me, as she's new to the area. I figured it could be a great time. I learned something... Nothing has changed. I don't think the menus have been wiped down since I was last there. That's just the beginning. The restaurant is brighter than some operating rooms I've been in. Fifty bazillion watts of light surround you so you can actually SEE how dirty the place really is. But, I've been in worse places hygiene wise, and it was a celebration so we just toughed it out. On the way there, I read out loud some of the Yelp reviews about Efrain's out loud. M was laughing at how bad it sounded, could it be true? Oh yes. More real than you can imagine. If you've ever been to Casa Bonita, then you've had food that could not possibly taste worse. Well, this is a close contender. At least CB has the cliff diver gig going on to distract you. Here, there was no safe place to hide. The waitress brought over chips and salsa and took our orders for drinks. The one redeeming quality was a semi decent Margarita. That's it. M pulled a chip from the basket that had someone else's salsa on it. Dried. We both wondered if they recycle chips off of other baskets. The food came, she ordered the rellenos, I got the tamale plate. The food arrived, it was temperature hot, but that was about it. Everything was smothered in a sauce that was straight from a can. The tamales were about an inch in diameter with bits of chicken buried deep in the masa. Basically I was eating corn rolls. M's relleno wasn't bad, or so she said, I think she was just being polite. First and foremost the service was outstanding. However, the rest of it felt like an episode of Kitchen Nightmares! Was waiting for Gordon Ramsey to tell me to stop eating. Loud environment, tables are very close. Servers can barely get through. Ordered Spanish rice and did not get that. Got white rice with two pieces of tomato and some cheese on top (for the uncultured, that is not Spanish rice). As expected at a Mexican restaurant they wrote Green Chile and Red Chile as "Red Sauce and Green Sauce" on the menu.
