We rode our scooters and decided to have dinner because of the delicious food odors. We were seated in the outdoor dining area. Eries main street was buzzing with activity so the people watching was enjoyable! Our waiter Ramon, was attentive and friendly, he made sure our drinks didn't run dry. Told not yet, (fine, we were early). Ordered a drink. 20-ish mins go by. Ask again. Food had been sitting the whole time. Get home. Not even slightly warm. Called and spoke to manager. Also, we went in during happy hour, but I was charged the regular price which was unfortunate. The service was great other than a check mix up. This was our second time to Wapos Cantina in Erie. Good: Food: portions are a bit smaller than a lot of Mexican restaurants we frequent, which I actually appreciate. The enchilada red sauce is just okay; the Verde sauce is great. Bad: Ambiance: music is too loud and not appropriate for families. Service: so.... Our first visit, the server was extremely friendly and helpful. Service was slow, but he was basically the server for the whole place, so we figured that was a reasonable reason for the delay. Now on to tonight: This place needs to work on the timing of service. We were one of four tables - all tables had this same issue. There were two of us. I ordered the combo, DH had the seafood enchiladas. It took about 35 minutes to be delivered - I'm okay with that if it's a scratch kitchen. DH food came out 15 minutes after that..... Unacceptable. We watched all the tables in the restaurant have the exact same issue. A 6-top had each plate come out at least 5-10 minutes apart. PLEASE work on this - we want to come back, but won't if this is the norm. read more

Came here yesterday for Cinco de Mayo! It was packed, but the staff was still very friendly and worked tirelessly. Really appreciate the energy to try to satisfy all the customers. The chips and salsa is delicious. Salsa has a slight kick but was super flavorful. Got the premium margarita and it was well worth it :) Unfortunately the made entrées didn't meet my expectations. Got the steak fajitas and the meat was over cooked and tough for my taste. Mole also wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped. The tamales was okay. The smother was good, but the pork tamale itself didn't have as much flavor either. Hoping it was just an off day given how busy they were. Overall I'd give this place a 3.5 stars. Definitely a place to go and grab drinks and catch up with friends. read more

We ordered takeout from Wapo's in Erie and unfortunately it wasn't a great experience. For $72 we got 2 appetizers and 2 entrées, but the value just wasn't there. Both appetizers were dips, and the amount of chips included was barely enough to cover half of one dip--so we were left with a lot of dip and nothing to eat it with. For takeout especially, that feels like an oversight. On the way out, I also grabbed a Shirley Temple for my son. They gave me a 12 oz to-go cup of Sprite with a splash of grenadine and charged $5.15. I get that prices are up everywhere, but $5 for a kid's soda that price feels extreme. The food itself was just okay, and between the portioning and the pricing, it just didn't feel worth it for takeout. read more

Wapos has only been open for a couple of months and we just moved to the area, but we've been in twice now over the last few weeks. We've also been to the Azteca that's right down the road previously and since we noticed a new Mexican restaurant entered the chat, we decided to stop by for lunch. After reading a few reviews, I wasn't surprised to learn that this place used to be a tavern. There is still a pretty good bar area in the newly renovated space as well as a good-sized dining area. The tables are spaced well so it doesn't feel super cramped if it's a busy time of the year. The space is clean and seems to be well organized. There is also a patio out back that I'm sure would be super cool to hang out on in the nicer months of the year. Both times we've been in we were helped immediately, and I believe our experiences have been with the general manager, which is cool! He is a super friendly, personable guy and is very welcoming. The menu is pretty large and has a lot of the typical dishes you see at many Mexican restaurants: enchiladas, burritos, tacos, an a la carte menu, and so on. You're given a generous helping of chips with some pretty bomb salsa when you're seated, which I love. I love salsa and spicy foods so much, so I was pleasantly surprised to realize the salsa is kinda spicy! Yay! The first time we visited, I ordered the chili verde enchiladas and my bf went for carnitas tacos. The wait between ordering and receiving the meals was quick, and presentation of the dishes has been on point. They're served on half sheet trays, which I think is pretty neat, too lol. While the flavors were pretty good, both times we ordered I swear the dishes were not really all that hot (temperature wise); not that they were cold, but you'd usually expect the food to be steaming and have to blow on your bites before eating and these dishes were not. I'm not sure if it was a fluke situation but I'll be back again to update my thoughts on this, I'm sure. Price point is reasonable, service is friendly, atmosphere is clean, and the food is pretty good. All things that get a thumbs up in my book. read more

I live in town, been here twice -- never again. Going to Azteca which is 10x better NO CLUE how to make a soft Relleno... and they charge extra for soft. Huh? They don't egg batter dip it... so it NOT a Relleno. It was horrible anyway! Red sauce is bad... equal or worse than store bought bad Carnitas has good flavor but its hidden under the bad sauce Green sauce tasted like watered-down 505 (which I like) but the watering down lost a lot of flavor Prices are OK for the quantity... but the flavors are just not there. read more

We live close and like to get take out frequently. Food is tasty but previous visits, the food has been cold by the time we got home 5 minutes later. So this time we arrived 5 minute before they said it would be ready. It wasn't ready, in fact we had to wait another 40 minutes. The restaurant wasn't all that busy and there was only 1 other take out ahead of us. Hopefully just a bad day and next time I can boost up my star rating. read more

Finally got to try Wapos! We're so happy to have a Mexican restaurant in town! Very friendly on the phone when we were ordering. They don't have a website yet, but you can go to Wapos Lafayette website - very helpful since we didn't know exactly what they had. Hopefully they'll get a Wapos Erie website soon. Pic isn't great but it was takeout - things moved on the way home lol! I got the Pregnant Burrito with a crispy relleno inside. My husband got the Enchiladas Jalisco and we both loved our meals! On top of that, you get chips and salsa to go as well! We will definitely be back, especially because everyone was so delightful! We went there today for my Birthday and we hoped it would be a good experience. There were three of us and the place was pretty empty at 12 Noon. We were taken to a table where the white covered chairs were filthy. That was a bad sign. We finally had a waiter come to get our orders and mind you-only three of us. It took 30 minutes to get our food and one of our orders was totally wrong. We think our order was given to another diner because when we mentioned it to our waiter, he removed the plate and he also removed another diner's plate near us. Needless to say, in a small town where there are few restaurants....this could be a goldmine, but I'm sorry to say they need to step it up with the service and clean the chairs. The skinny high-end marg that I ordered was not measured and not well very balanced. The chips and salsa had a strange after taste... It was move in day to my sons new home on Erie.. not knowing the area, I used Yelp to find some take out. I ordered the pregnant burrito and enchiladas verde and at the suggestion of the gentleman on the phone, the shrimp Diablo. He then asked if there was anything else and I jokingly asked for margaritas.. ( which after all day moving, I really needed).. and he said sure! I was totally surprised and ordered 3!.
