I was hesitant to check this place out due to the numerous negative reviews. But, both my partner and I really wanted Mexican food, and we were in the Erie area, so we decided to check it out anyway, and hoped the reviews were wrong... At least on this day, at this time. Chad and I got to the restaurant around 1:15 PM yesterday. There weren't many people at the establishment, maybe one other party inside and one outside. We were greeted fairly quickly and were seated by a lovely woman. She was very helpful and answered all of our questions about the menu, and was quick to give recommendations. We started with chips and salsa, and I ordered a Skinny Margarita. Yes, it's a little out of the ordinary to charge for chips and salsa, but I thought both were amazing. The salsa was fresh and really tasty (and tasted nothing like ketchup, which I despise). I've had a lot of horrible salsas; this was not horrible at all, and neither were the chips, crunchy and delicious, imo. The skinny margarita, which was $14, was huge and actually worth the cost. The lovely waitress gave me the Happy Hour cost of the margarita ($10) since we were paying right about when HH started (2 PM). Chad noticed that they had a Cheese Crispi (or just Cheese Crisp as we AZ folks like to call it), but we were pretty hungry and really just wanted meals. I got the Vegetarian Burrito and asked that it be smothered with the sour cream cheese sauce that I saw on another vegetarian dish, the Chimichanga de Hongos. I'm sure I put on a few pounds from that sauce alone, and it was 100% worth it! The entire dish was SO GOOD! Chad got the Expresso Burrito and couldn't even finish the whole thing, not for want of trying, though. I don't know if we had the good luck to come at a good/slow time, and that's why we had such a wonderful experience, but I almost felt like I was at a totally different restaurant than the one being reviewed here. When we are in the area again, Chad and I will definitely be visiting Fuego Azteca again and trying out the Cheese Crispi and the Deep Fried Ice Cream! read more

Not a lot of places offer Pozole and I was very excited to order it. It was terrible. No flavor, gritty hominy & chunks of overcooked, tasteless pork. I've been in two or three times now for lunch and have enjoyed each visit thoroughly. Azteca is what many might consider run of the mill Mexican food, but the consistency in the meals and service is what I believe puts this little family restaurant a tier above the newer, flashy Wapos down the road. Downtown Erie is about a block and a half long in total, but street parking is pretty extensive. I'm new to the area, so I'm not sure what the dinner crowds look like downtown, but I would expect that parking doesn't become too big of a problem for the most part. Walking in, the restaurant is surprisingly large and boasts the authenticity in decor of many similar establishments. The dining area is clean, and the staff are attentive and charming. It is a pleasant place to walk into. Similar to many of my other reviews, I decided to grab a bite during the lunch hour. From what I've experienced, the lunch crowd is fairly scarce and there has not been a time where we've needed to wait for a table to become available. I would certainly like to stop by for dinner and plan to do so at some point; I'll update my take on that situation whenever it happens. The meat of the visit: 1) Great flavors and piping hot platters. In my opinion, Azteca does a good job of not making every part of the meal taste similar. I'm also a huge critic of the temperature of meals served at restaurants - hot = fresh! (Though I guess take that with a grain of salt because there are instances in which that isn't the case, I guess. 2) Big portions for a super reasonable price - even the lunch plates are almost too much to finish! 3) Friendly, attentive service. Nice people are nice, ya know? 4) Well spaced, clean dining area. Bathrooms are also clean which is a plus. Hate feeling like washing your hands makes you dirtier than when you walked in lol. We had an enjoyable experience sitting outside, the weather was perfect at 5:30 on this Saturday night in late September. Service was fine, Severo S. was not overly chatty, but we were given good service. You will get the customary chip basket and salsa, which was tasty. Our table all reported enjoying their food, solid 'B' grades all around. I had the Azteca burrito with shredded beef. It was BIG, they call it the best burrito north of the Border! Flour tortilla filled with your choice of chicken, shredded beef or pork with rice, beans and our special burrito sauce with melted cheese. Topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, sour cream and guacamole. my wife had the Pollo (Shredded Chicken) tostada, a fresh, crispy corn tortilla shell covered with refried beans, shredded chicken, lettuce, cheese and a slice of tomato. My cousin had a taco, enchilada combo (standard), while her husband had the Chile Verde Pork, which was a healthy portion of chunks of pork in a light green Mexican "tomatillo" sauce. Served with warm flour tortillas. This might have been the meal of the night, although, I did like my burrito. The portions were large, and the food was all solid. They have very friendly pricing. At the conclusion of my meal and at the end of the night, my overall experience was 3.5 stars, but I can't round up, so I'm staying with 3 stars. If I lived in Erie, this spot would be on my regular restaurant rotation. If you have a hankering for Mexican food and adult beverages, Azteca Mexican Restaurant will confidently address your needs. read more

Nothing really special about this restaurant. The food is NOT AUTHENTIC. It is not made here it is only warmed up and served. The red chili sauce for the enchiladas tastes mass produced. The beans are rehydrated. The service was cold and unfriendly. The gentleman that seated us and took our order was not friendly he made our experience quite awkward. I wasn't sure if he was mad or just a introvert. Either way, with that attitude he shouldn't be greeting people. This man was the bartender, waiter and bus boy. Maybe he was stressed. How hard is it not to screw up nachos. This dish has a full cup of grease that has just ruined every single chip that has been floating in this grease. First we were seated right away though the restaurant was full of people. We got our drinks right away which was two margaritas the server suggested. They were strong but delicious. Next we had the chips queso and salsa. We got it all over ourselves because we ate the whole bowl of queso. The food came and the servings were enough for two meals or people each. Ordered fajitas - meat was burnt along with onions and peppers, beans had no flavor, tortillas are not fresh made. Queso was the only decent thing we ordered, but the chips were awful so it kinda ruined the queso. We were not greeted for at least 10 min and each time our waitress left she was gone for at least 15 min out of sight, and there were not many people in there at all. This place is not authentic nor worth the money. Being from Texas I've had the luxury of having great Mexican food (authentic and tex-mex) and so far i have not found any place here in Colorado that can make better Mexican food than what I can whip up in the kitchen. read more

Saturday night out, 7:45pm - no wait, kind of dead actually. Walked right in and sat down, which was nice. We each ordered a margarita - one traditional marg and one jalapeño marg. I can handle the heat, I really can, and I usually LOVE a jalapeño marg. This one was wayyy too spicy. Gah! Our server disappeared for a long while, or I likely would have politely requested it be remade, or ordered something else. We do really like that they use fresh lime juice and not margarita mix. Only way to do it. My husband ordered a combo plate which was a decent value. The only disappointing thing was that the tamale didn't come with a sauce, nor did she ask if we wanted any. Again, case of the missing server or I would have asked for green chile on the side. I ordered the shredded beef nachos and it was a super value. Lots of meat and toppings. Couldn't finish it and had a whole other serving of nachos. Food is pretty good, great value. Easy to get a table on a usually busy restaurant night. Service isn't great but if you're not in a hurry, give it a shot. Ultimately, I'll give them another go to see if it gets better. read more

Walked and the guy that sat us acted like it was rude of us for disturbing him while he was visiting his friends at the table he was sitting at. Only gave us 2 menus when there was 3 of us and didn't say a word before walking over and sitting back down at the table. Oh and if your one of those people complaining that no one gave you "sauce" or offered green Chile. It's prolly bc it's a Mexican restaurant and green Chile "sauce" is not Mexican. We have been here several times but tonight was a bit uncomfortable and disappointing. We walked in and the owner/server who we have had several times handed us the menus instead of seating us outside like we asked and didn't even really acknowledge, greet us, smile, nada. We sat down and the server was young and inexperienced but we gave her the benefit of the doubt. She didn't ask if we wanted drinks, or chips and salsa just asked, "are you ready to order?" Which is fine, we did. We ordered everything and the food came out, no silverware, which I had asked for when she took our order,... or better yet the owner could have seated us with silverware and menus when we came in. No chips and salsa until after our food came, at which point I said "no thank you, we wanted them before our meal". Food was less than mediocre. The table next to us was visiting for a long time after eating and no one cleared their plates. When they got up to leave (more than 30 minutes after we sat down) the dirty plates were still on the table. So disappointing! The owner should really try to pretend that he enjoys having a restaurant. read more
