This was my go to pub when I lived nearby. Considering my frequent patronage I must include 5 flattering points. 1.Relinquishes the screens for important soccer matches 2. Great beer selection and delicious eats 3. Parents friendly (in the afternoon) 4. Had electricity during the Halloween storm when I did not (and extra electric sockets to boot!) 5. Picture it: Montclair, NJ, 2014 We parked in the parking lot and it was unclear of where we should enter the restaurant. We walked to the back door and pulled and the door would not open. We found out that we needed to pull harder because the door sticks and did just that. When we entered the establishment, we found that two employees were sitting in the front lobby and had not even attempted to open the door for us on our first attempt. When we entered, we were ignored and proceeded to walk down a hallway into a room that was completely empty. Feeling frustrated, we walked back into the lobby and were ignored once again. We decided to leave and go to a different restaurant feeling annoyed with the unfriendly staff. Will not ever return or recommend to anyone else. read more

I have been frequenting Egan's since it first opened. It really is the only nice bar in town (halcyon next door has a nice bar too). The food and service has been consistently good for a causal moderately priced place. Expect to be pleased with the wings, burgers, Mediterranean burger and Ruben toasties. The only downside is they advertise and have in their reviews, Irish Lamb Stew, and it was not available both visits, make it a once a week special, don't advertise it. I went to Egans yesterday in the mood for a chicken sandwich as a result of reading the local newspaper the Montclair Times the previous week which had a review on several area restaurants and their sandwiches. I was totally delighted with the dish ; the chicken was moist and tender the bun was soft; the sandwich included lettuce and tomato and a wonderful dressing and a delicious sour pickle I ordered sweet potato fries which came out just the way I like them thin and crispy. This is a great Irish bar and restaurant, which has only gotten better since they expanded the main dining area. They also have a very good bar with all many of the favorites on tap. As far as food is concerned, I love their pork chop, and in general I'm not a very big fan of pork chops. Their shepherds pie is also yummy. My only complaint about Egan's is that I wished their appetizer selection was a bit better. If you like wings, like I do, I was a bit disappointed in the Maple-syrup infused wings -- and they cost more than $1.25/wing. read more

3.5 stars This is a very nice bar/pub. They offer a nice selection of beers on tap at reasonable prices. They also have a number of larger bottles of some quality beers at a steeper price. Most of the bases are covered liquor-wise, and they offer a fun variety of cocktails. The bar food/apps are all fine renditions, with pretty solid wings, crisp onion rings, and a tasty rendition of mussels and french fries. The mains are a nice selection of standard pub fare with some Irish specialties as well. Not only are they doing burgers, pizza and sandwiches, but also some finer entrees, such as salmon, scallops, pork chops and hanger steaks--though the execution of their mains is leaves room for improvement. Went here for dinner. We shared an order of wings. Interesting sauce. It was sort of Buffalo mild, but had a sweet taste. My wife and kids loved it. I thought it was ok, but prefer spicy Buffalo. I had fish & chips for dinner. The fish was watery and soggy. Thus, either someone in the kitchen dropped mine in a cup of water or it was defrosted and not cooked enough. The hand cut French fries were good. My daughter had the chicken sandwich. It was big and tasted good. However, the chicken was on the salty side. My wife had a beef Sheppard's pie. This was the stand out of the evening. If we go back, I will definitely order this dish, it tasted good. The price point is good for the dished we ordered. I thought some of the dishes on the menu were strangely priced in relation to other dishes. Our service was a little disappointing. It was not horrible, just a little slow and strange (i.e., wings with no plates (table next to us got plates with its wings)). Parking was a problem. We had to park 3 blocks away and at a meter. This is my second time going to Egan and Sons for dinner and it was a better experience this time than last. My main complaint with this place is that it is too noisy and dark. The Egans need to put in some buffer walls for the sound issue. My husband and I were sitting right across from each other but had to raise our voices to be heard. The bar is separated, but within the restaurant itself it is simply too loud. That being said, the food was very good and they made me a kick-ass French martini -- I love French martinis lately and not everyone makes a good one. We got the mussels to share for an appetizer and they were excellent. I am a mussel lover and these were huge, plentiful and 95% sand free. The wine sauce they were in was also just right -- flavorful but it didn't overwhelm the taste of the mussels. For my entree I got the portobello burger with a rarebit sauce. I thought the cheese sauce was a bit over done and I ended up taking the mushrooms off the bread and just eating them separately. I love a good portobello mushroom but these were a tad greasy. My husband got the cottage pie and loved it. We were both too full to consider dessert! Our waiter, Joe, was excellent, especially considering that it was very crowded and loud. He was always right on point bringing us what we wanted. The decor is attractive but again, the lighting is too dark. We could barely see our food. It is hardly romantic -- we had other tables right along side us on either side. I don't see the need for such dark lighting when everyone is right on top of each other anyway! Maybe have it dark in the bar, but in the restaurant, I'd like some more light! read more

Been here a handful of times and it is a really great place with great food! They have two locations, one in Montclair and one in West Orange. I prefer the one in Montclair. It's bigger with an outside section and draws a bigger crowd. They have a pretty good selection of beer on tap and every food dish I have tried has been really amazing! I absolutely LOVE their orzo salad!! It is huge and so good!! And you HAVE TO TRY their warm sticky toffee pudding! It actually isn't pudding at all, it is like a sticky bun with a moist center but no actual pudding. IT IS AMAZING!! You will never have something like this anywhere else. It is to die for and a must try!! Prices are a little on the high side but you are getting an amazing selection of beverages and quality of food. Grill closes at 10 so get there early if you want to try their amazing food selection! read more

What a great beer selection! I was here last night, enjoyed a few Rogue Dead Guy ales. The honey wings were awesome and the fish and chips were amazing, the fish was very tender and moist. I was here twice, both times with a group of friends, and both times we had the same, awful waiter, who would frequent our tables about twice in a half hour period of time. He was the hardest person to find when we needed something, and he wasn't very friendly AT ALL. Besides the awful service, the food was excellent, although a bit pricey. You know those times when you can't decide where to eat? Go here. It is just the right vibe for any occasion. Cool and casual, but a little upscale, full bar, nice menu, and a patio. I'm always happy with the food and the beer selection is massive. It can get pretty packed with the young(ish) professional crowd on the weekends, so the bar area can be a tight squeeze and you'll wait a while for a table. Also, if you are unaware that the hostess station is in the back of the building, you will never, ever get a table and you'll never know why. Just a solid spot all around. read more

Went to Egans last Saturday night and sat on their beautiful patio. The server was very nice. We ordered the boneless wings. They were terrible. The first time we got them they were fried until they were to tough to tear apart. We made them take them back and tried again. The second time they were frozen compressed meat, all dark which is rather odd in a wing. They were some sort of frozen stuff and clearly not made in the kitchen. It went downhill from there. So sad! Went here twice and loved it both times!!!! We are various appetizers such as calamari, which was crispy, tender and fresh. In addition, we throughly enjoyed the miso cauliflower- so yummy!!!! Whenever I am in Montclair, I always stop by at Egan & Sons. I wish there were more gastropubs like this. In terms of the food and drink, they have a great menu of specialty burgers, entrees and salads. There is literally something for everyone, whether you are a super snobby foodie to the average joe who wants a great burger. I love their mini cheese burgers, lamb burger and fish and chips. They also have a fantastic offering of beers on tap/bottles and some really great wines as well. Best of all, the prices are incredibly reasonable especially considering the quality of the food and drink. What I also love of about this place is the service is always attentive and friendly. Bottom line: Great food, but don't go if you have somewhere to be later. The food is delicious here, everyone always happy when I've been. The hummus / falafel platter appetizer is really spot on, can't get enough of it (even though it's quite large). The hanger steak is my favorite, and that's coming from someone who only eats beef 1-2 times a month and has never ordered a steak anywhere by here. Shoestring fries are perfect and crazy. One big downside is the service is very slow. It's fine for me because I don't go there when rushed, but if I didn't go in knowing that, I'd be turned off by it. I get the kitchen being slow when backed up on a weekend night, but our waiter kept disappearing on things that don't require the kitchen. Drinks (even water) took a while, a cup of coffee 15 minutes. Another waitress kept helping out since we couldn't find him. That said, food is fantastic and I'll certainly be back. read more

As stated in the many reviews below, the decor is very nice and clean and has multiple drink and food choices. That said, the whole place is straight up awkward. If you're there for the bar scene (there's multiple bars throughout the place), there is literally no good place to stand, you are always in someone's way or someone's in your way. The layout is a mess. If you're there to sit and eat, there's a good chance there's a bar-goer standing and encroaching on your space. The lounge upstairs tries to be chic and exclusive but it ends up being an extension of the awkwardness downstairs. There's a DJ and people dancing but no dance floor or space for it. This place is freakin' huge yet there never seems to be any space. I think the real problem with this spot is it's not sure what is (A bar? A clam bar? A lounge? A craft beer spot? Fine dining? I was here last night and had boneless Thai chili wings to start, they were huge and had delicious flavor! I also had the Spring N' Thyme to drink and it was delicious! Then for my entree I had the cider glazed salmon, which is my favorite at this place, and it was delicious! Probably worth $3 and not the $14 that they charge for barely anything on the plate. The boneless wings were just OK. Now I went yesterday for just some drinks, placed a simple order as well and my oh my was I in for a treat! The tequila with pineapple and cranberry was honestly one of the worst mixed drinks I've ever got to taste, now the next drinks.. two Tito clubs (club soda with Tito vodka) all 3 drinks were made in bigger cups so you'd expect it to be 2 or 3 dollars more right? Me too! But not only were the Tito clubs basically just club soda with no vodka but the bill was $50.00!!!!! Whaaaaat, me and my friend looked at each other in shock. Good wings and good service. The burger, which I ordered medium well, was somewhat dry - lucky for bacon. The menu did say "lean" which may be why. My wife though the fish/chips was a 7. -- Update: They (and I include the West Orange location) have an amusing salad - "Traditional Cob Salad (with shallot vinaigrette). So good. Love Egans, it's been a staple since we've lived in the neighborhood for the past 8 years. LOVE LOVE how the new patio looks, but it took ten minutes to be brought menus, and another 5 for a server to come over. He came over with bottled water before we even spoke to him-nice touch, until you get the bill at the end with a charge of $2 per water?!? I came here a couple weeks ago for an afternoon snack. They had a good variety of beer which I love - I tried their house beer which was quite tasty. Then my boyfriend and I split an order of the maple wings. I am from Buffalo and really picky about my wings but these were really good. The maple was just right - not overpowering but gives it an interesting slight sweetness. I definitely recommend them! The service was mediocre. I think maybe the shift was changing over from lunch to dinner because we started off with one server, had to ask another server where our drinks were after ten minutes, and had a third server during the last part of our visit. Also, I wonder if they ever have drink specials because they have a great selection but drinking those beers for a couple hours would get expensive. In Montclair I would hope the drink prices would be a little lower than NYC. read more

This is a solid place that if I'm ever in the Montclair area, near my old hometown I will elect to go to. Went here right before Christmas for a reunion dinner with my best friend from high school and we decided that Egans would be our best bet. I've been here numerous times for small plates and drinks but this was the first time for dinner. For a Monday it was busy so there was a bit of a wait, but no worries. we settled down with their in house (they are also a brewery) ales which were really good, I wanted to try their wheat beer but they did not have any. We got seated soon enough and our server was very friendly and our dinner service was quick without being rushed. We opted on the lower end of the menu, decided on just burgers, but they were really very good and substantial. They also bring out really fresh tasting bread before your meal which is always a plus. Our total meal was about 40 bucks, which included about 2 rounds of drinks. Their desserts sounded good too, but considering that it was just the beginning of the holiday season, we decided to be good. The biggest draw I would say about Egans is that it is very popular, so it gets very crowded. The bar area is impossibly narrow and so it's a bit of a chore to get around. Also, the front area is reserved for people eating until 9 am, but afterwards if you're just having drinks you can try to snatch up a table. It attracts a varied group- the post college crowd and older, and it is family friendly dinner wise. read more

Egan's is good but not consistent. I love the devil's chicken, but only on days when it isn't extremely dry. They brew their own beer which is also hit or miss. Some batches, the IPA is fabulous and hits all the right notes. Some batches, it tastes like nothing at all, with a little bit of bitterness thrown in. Their wings, however, are nothing to sneeze at. Buffalo with a hint of maple...I haven't had a problem yet. Also, the burger, as evaluated by my burger-loving boyfriend, has a nice charred crust and beefy flavor, though the patty itself is a little dry. I also wholeheartedly recommend the mashed potatoes, which accompany most main dishes. Yum! The atmosphere is also inconsistent. If you go early, it's a nice place to eat dinner with the family. You can also drink at the bar and actually hear each other talk until about 10 pm, where it gets so loud that you can barely hear a person say they want to leave and go some place quieter. Egan's is incredibly popular with the locals, myself included, and you can find any Montclair High alumni still in the area at Egan's on one night or another--eating, drinking or serving your dinner. Popularity is warranted, though, as there are few other places in Montclair with the same pub-type feel. read more

Good environment. I had calamari, kabobs and wings for my appetizer. Calamari was good. The kabobs where one lamb and one chicken, it came with cabbage and pita bread which I made into baby gyros. Wings were average. As my meal I ate a crab cake which was on the appetizer menu. It was really good. My friend had the pork chop which was amazing. It was a double cut and worth the extra wait time for the meal. It was in a sweet and spicy sauce which I liked. And my other friend had some burger ( I don't remember the name. Started with a "t") with blue cheese that over powered the burger. I absolutely did not like. But everything else was really good. Overall the food was good. It's a good environment for a low-key dinner. They have a bar area which has a good vibe. read more

On Yelp* I'm a liberal five star giver. However, Egans or "Oddfellows" as I affectionately have dubbed it, deserves all five of those beautiful little buggers. I have not once eaten from here and left disappointed. Such great variety on the menu! So what did our party enjoy on the eve of the new year? Well, I had a couple Red ales and an Irish car bomb (with must with dinner) to drink. Oysters, buffalo wings, all good. Split the Cottage Pie (like shepherds pie but with beef) with my fiancé, and it was delicious. The fact that I couldn't finish the Cottage Pie because of all the drinks and other stuff was my one regret. All in all, a great spot for a nice quiet dinner (super noisy and can be crowded at the bar) if you can secure a table. I will be coming back soon for a joint birthday party in March because I don't get to eat irish food often enough throughout the year, and I love to eat Irish food. Nom nom nom. Outdoor patio area during summer months, otherwise a fair amount of standing room or, again, try to secure a table or the one table room with a fireplace.
