Popped in for a quick drink with the neighbor, and this is truly a neighborhood Irish pub. The menu leans on Irish food staples, and while I've had better salmon and toast as a starter, the short rib sandwich had an excellent braised short rib that fell apart in the mouth, delicious, the bread didn't hold up much (maybe could have used a garlic or horseradish aioli?), and the shoestring fries were ok, definitely needed the ketchup. Seating at the bar was a bit crowded. Jimmy the bartender was great in service but busy, but the seat I had was right behind the taps so I didn't have much space for the plate of food -- recommend getting a table next time or watch where you want to sit - plenty of space for a glass of beer, but not for a plate. The half plate of wings - a lot of garlic parm sauce on top, and while not the best wings (lacked any crisp), the sauce was nice and thick and heavy - albeit salty, but that's ok for wings. Dismal dining experience on Dailey quiet Sunday early evening with 40% capacity. Staff looked and served as if they most certainly didn't want to be there. We've been going for years and have seen a precipitous decline in food - and we focused on pub food which is generally their "bread and butter". All food items were overcooked and simply tasteless. Silverware was slapped down on the table in a mountain for us to distribute. Empty glasses and dishes left on the table well after we finished each and wanted to order more which made for a chaotic and unappetizing scene. Had diner here this evening with my wife. Inside has a very typical Irish Pub feel. It was a beautiful evening so we ate outside where they have several tables and it's perfect for people watching. We started off with a couple drinks. Beer was ice cold and refreshing. For dinner we shared a house salad and asked for balsamic vinaigrette on side. We got a side of just balsamic vinegar. Salad was just ok. For mains my wife got the salmon over a bed of spinach and loved it. I got the shepherds pie and honestly it was a major disappointment. It looked good, but really was lacking. Chopped meat filling had zero taste and was dry. Almost no sign of any vegetables except for a few very finely chopped carrots( barely perceptible) . A real fail for a dish that should be featured at an Irish pub. Service was adequate. I gave it 3 stars based on my wife enjoying her meal. If it were based on my dish it would be one star. Must be a reason they were the only place in town with empty tables. Probably won't be returning. read more

My experience is thus: - told it would be 30 minute wait for table - other groups come in and get seated immediately - after 30 minutes, told to wait 30 more - more tables are seated - servers come to take orders and deliver drinks to other groups seated outside - my group told to order at bar - another 30 minutes passes and nothing There's only one difference I can see between my group and the others - race, and my group was primarily speaking Spanish. Let's start with the goods shall we? Great downtown location; nearby parking; extremely friendly staff. My boyfriend and I ordered LA's Crock of Cheese as an appetizer. Our dining mates went with chicken tenders (which I might add, looked like ready-to-eat tenders that had been microwaved). What arrived was an abomination of my tastebuds. If you had showed me a 6 year old was in the kitchen churning out orders, I wouldn't have been surprised. This excuse for a lunchable was the "crock of cheese"?! I'm not the person to send food back or cause a scene about my order, but this deserved it. Instead, I was shocked into silence. I could not, and STILL can not believe that they were willingly serving this. My entree was Shepherd's Pie. The #1 thing going for it was the tongue searing temperature. I'm known for liking my food HOT, but this was HOT until the very last bite. Perhaps, too hot then? It was edible but nothing to rave about. What a lovely place to watch the World Cup. They were insanely busy, duh. But things were pretty held together considering. They didn't have any coffee, which kind of sucked (server said machine was broken). Mussels in cream sauce was yummy, my husband said his Reuben was forgettable. Hard to believe that the chef/cook would let this out for service and the waiter let it pass as well. The CHIPS tasted as if they had been sitting under a heat lamp for well more than an hour. The SHEPHERD'S PIE had an off after taste and the meat inside had the not-tenderized chew of ground horse meat. Ridiculous, that in order to post the review, one must give it a minimum of 1 star. Why is there no icon of a skeleton with crossbones or better yet, the devil with my option of selecting multiple pitch-forks? Came to dinner at St James's Gate last night after not being here in years. It's a nice but casual Irish pub. We were greeted right away and seated. The service wasn't great, just short and to the point. We ordered the Celtic Wings, Mac N Cheese with short rib, and a burger. The wings were great and a large portion. The burger was was fresh and cooked to perfection and on a soft toasted role. I really enjoyed it and would recommend. It came with a side of shoestring fries which we devoured. My husband's Mac n Cheese was okay. It's flavorful but not super creamy or cheesy. The short rib was tender and good. Not bad but don't expect it to be oozing with cheese. Overall a good experience. This has to be some of the worst service I have ever received from an establishment. There was one, highly inexperienced server taking orders for about 8 tables. Between taking our order and delivering our check (which I had to chase her down for) she never once checked our table. I had to chase down workers for water refills, the check, ketchup, you name it. No managerial staff on site to assist. To top it off, the place advertised $5 bloody Mary's and mimosas, but the check didn't reflect that. When I asked the waitress why my drink wasn't $5, she said I needed to specifically request it. What?! Then don't advertise it to the masses! One of the best meals I've had in NJ in a long time. You can taste the passion of the chefs love and respect for irish fare in every bite. Incredible Fisn N Chips. Perfectly cooked cod fish and beer battering. Many reviews on here seem to think that the breading on the Fish N Chips is burnt, but in fact, it is the flavorful Guinness beer battering that may give it that appearance to the untrained eye. The Pei Mussels are unrivaled in their rich white parmesan cream sauce. You'll want to lick the bowl clean. Their burgers, short rib, and reubens are all great sandwiches that you can't go wrong with. Would recommend this restaurant anyone who likes rich and robust flavors where a pint of Guinness will pair with everything on the menu. There was some controversy post-dinner, as my sister (who was the one who selected the restaurant) insisted that the vegetables in her Bubbles and Squeak were insufficiently varied. A waiter flipped out on me for hand signaling him to come to speak to me. I was trying to subtly get his attention, as I was attempting to pay for another family's tab on my way out. We visit friends who live in Maplewood from time to time. St James Gate is always a good option. Great beers. Really good pub food. Nice staff. Last time we sat at the bar and had the Sheperd's pie. First of all, it was huge. Second of all it was delicious. Since we could not finish it all, we took it home. It reheated really well and was just as good. The bartender said "We should use mashed potatoes as insulation. That will stay warm for hours" He's got a point! What really surprised us were the fries. We are fans of the crisp and thin french fery. I was expecting a think pub fry - not so fast! These were thin and crispy and HOT and I could have eaten an entire barrel of them.
