Food is ok, service is terrible. I went there for dinner with my kids and relatives last night and my waiter had 4 tables to serve. She managed to leave us with empty water glasses for most of the dinner, I had to ask her 3 times for silverware, my second drink was never served. She did not even bring out bread for my kids that did not order appetizers. She also told us that the filet side was mashed potatoes yet French fries were served as a side. The tip was already on my bill so that is probably why the service was so poor and it felt like the waiter was doing us a favor. read more

I honestly didn't think there were any decent places to eat here in NJ (we moved about a year ago from the city and haven't been impressed with anything) but then we were recommended to come here. It has a great ambiance and vibe, our dinner was very good, east coast Canadian oysters that were delicious - I usually prefer west coast oysters but these were small and sweet and just as good. While I loved my Devil Chicken, I could have gone without the under seasoned and 80ish piped out mashed potatoes, but the string beans were very tasty. My wife's filet was tender and tasty as was her well dressed salad. Service was exceptional. Overall as good if not better than the the vast majority of places in the city. We will be going back! Came to Egans tonight, had a blast with friends I hadn't seen in a while. The staff are very attentive and friendly and the food is great. The crowd is attractive and every time we have been here, we have never left disappointed. Food: I recommend the fish tacos, the chicken burger, cheeseburger of course, Irish Toasties and their famous wings, ( if you love wings get your own order, you will not want to share them, thats how great they are!) Egans is a great place to come have drinks with my friends, or just a casual dinner with my wife and kids. We will be back again! read more

This was my family's second time at Egan and Sons and it was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. We were lured back to Egan's after our last visit because of the great beer selection but we will never go back due to the rude staff and poor service. We entered the bar through the front entrance looking for a hostess, but ended up standing around for five minutes wondering how to get seated. We had to ask a waitress where we could sit before she directed us to the back of the bar to find the hostess. (Still not sure why the hostess is in the back of the restaurant). When we were finally seated, we waited for fifteen minutes for a server. My twin sons were starving and getting restless so my husband had to ask the hostess to send a waiter over. When our waiter arrived, he did not list any specials for the evening or offer our children crayons, which was frustrating given that all the other tables with children had crayons provided. Anyone with children between the ages of 1 and 5 can relate to how difficult it can be to entertain your children in public and given the delay in service thus far, we really would have appreciated the extra diversion. When our food arrived, both of our steaks were overcooked and we weren't able to actually enjoy our food because the man who was clearing plates came over to sweep the floor under our table and chairs while we were trying to eat our meal. He actually moved the chairs around our table and sighing loudly as if he was annoyed by our presence. Our waiter only checked on us once throughout the meal so we had to ask another server for the bill. She seemed annoyed that we were asking her to help us since we were not her assigned table. As we were cleaning up to leave (which can take a little longer than normal with two fussy children) the same rude man who was sweeping under our table earlier came back over to clear our plates and try to rush us out of the restaurant. On our way out, I asked the hostess to speak to the manager. She did not know where he was, leaving me unable to share my poor experience. It was obvious that this restaurant was in serious need of management and the fact that he left the restaurant and was unable to attend to patrons is unacceptable. The staff does not seem to work as a cohesive team and the service lacks as a result. As a mother, I am always looking for kid friendly restaurants that can accommodate parents with young children. I would not recommend this establishment if you are looking for kind servers, timely service or quality food. PS. I am giving them one star only because 0 is not an option read more

I was celebrating my girlfriend's birthday with a few friends at the high top tables area. We asked the waiter to please take a group picture using my phone, he accidentally dropped the phone and broke the screen. I thought my night was ruined entirely, minutes later the general manager Darren approached our group and personally apologized for the incident. In addition, he offered to pay for a new screen given the circumstances. I was very grateful this incident happened at a place where the management is very reasonable. I took my son and his buddy to Egan's for lunch. Having just moved to Montclair, it's within walking distance. Well, I am now really glad I moved here, with a microbrewery with good food nearby. The chocolate stout and red ale were both excellen,t and the chicken pot pie was richly endowed with spices and just the right amount to fill me up. read more

This place is solidly delicious and reasonably priced to boot. The maple buffalo wings are very tasty. Really like the cottage pie. Burgers and fries are quite good too. Great pub food plus. They have a sample platter that takes up half a table. Totally decent beer selection. I've always gotten good service. A winner in my book. read more

I found Egan & Sons on the internet when I searched for restaurants in the West Orange area that serve Sticky Toffee Pudding. My husband and I went for the first time tonight. He ordered the salmon - medium - and said it was perfect (although done which is what he likes). It was a large portion of salmon which made him very happy. He said the spinach was garlicky and awesome and the sweet potato fries were great and he wants to go back again and again. I ordered the "Toasties - Reuben" which were 2 toasted reuben sandwiches and were also quite good. However, I was very disappointed in the sticky toffee pudding which was not very moist tonight. I admit to being spoiled having it in Scotland many times. Tonight's didn't even really taste like it did before. So I would go back again and again, but I probably won't order the sticky toffee pudding again. read more

Nice place if you go during the day or on Sat/Sun afternoon, nights are mobbed and claustrophobic. Afternoon are nice and relaxing, the salads, and steak are all very good. Here's my one real problem with the place- they can't pour a proper Guinness. This has been going on for years- straight down the middle of the glass. We just got back from this place after having a late lunch. I've never written a review on yelp but I thought it's worthwhile since we had such a terrible experience. After going to Egans for over 6 years for brunch, lunch, dinner, birthday parties etc. Today's experience was the worst. The host and Manager's costumer service skills was a disappointment. We were a party of 7 (3 adults and 4 children) We requested a table outside and the host told us they could only accommodate us at the lounge chairs or inside tables. We looked around and half of the tables outside were empty! We asked to split the group 4 children at a table of 4 and 3 adults on a table right next to each other. This option was available since half of ten restaurant was empty. The manager came out to tell us that if other costumers showed up, he would need to give my children's table to them!!!! As if the children didn't count as human being. I told him that the children were planning to order food and that we, of course, would pay accordingly !!!!!!! Unfortunately he continued to disagree with us and continue to debate the issue. We decided to seat ourselves despite his comments. The food and the waitress service were great so we ended up having a good meal despite Manager's lack of costumer service skills!!! read more

I like this place. It is big enough that I've never had to wait for seating, even when they are crowded. I'm sure it happens because it's a popular place but so far I haven't experienced it. Very clean establishment, delicious bloody Mary's and their fish and chips- amazing. Comes with a side of mashed peas that look like baby food but taste amazing. They have a casual seating area in the front as well as a communal table... Then, the bar area. A quiet little nook with a private table off to the side and a larger dining room in the back. Beyond that there is another dining area. I've never been out back but I think there are picnic tables out on the deck as well. There is a parking lot in the back on label street which is shared w Halcyon. This is not the type of place I would take a date to if im looking for a romantic vibe, but I have taken visitors from out of town there as well as business associates. Last time I was there with a friend we both ordered the same things. The bill totaled $79.50 for 2 orders of fish and chips, one extra side of mashed peas and 4 kettle one bloody Mary's topped w Guinness. Not cheap, but not outrageously priced either. A nice go to that won't disappoint. read more

After reading several negative reviews, I was actually intrigued to try Egan & Sons. And, I'm happy I did. First, the decor is very unique for a bar, it's very inviting and just when you think there couldn't be another room, there is. It's a huge place, very deceiving from the exterior. Our waitress was friendly and didn't rush us, as we took our time drinking a beer and looking over the menu. We started off with the Maple Wings, and they were amazing. You still got the taste of a typical wing, with a kick of sweetness. Because the portions are generous, we decided to split a few things to taste test. Secondly, we had the Mussels. Now, I'm a big Mussel eater, and these were delicious. The portion was huge, the garlic & wine wine sauce was light and flavorful. Lastly, we split the Thierry Henry pizza. The caramelized onions added a sweet kick, which was different for a pizza, but with the Parmesan Cream Sauce & Gruyere Cheese, it was amazing. Even though it's a "bar pie" it's very filling and we had to take some home. Now that the weather is getting better and Summer is right around the corner, I would definitely go back to sit outside and try other options on the menu. read more

I have been to Egans many times over the past 7 or 8 years. Usually for a drink before going out to eat (and sometimes I stayd to eat). I've always considered their drinks a little pricey ($11 for a martini), but nonetheless have always liked the place for its ambiance and convenience and have regularly returned. Tonight, however, I was not happy. It seems there is a change in their "pour" . The $11 martini is now only filled 3/4 of the way to the top of the glass (when most bartenders pride themselves in mixing drinks that fit perfectly to the top), then remove the massive olives and you have an $11 martini in a glass that is under 3/4 filled. Keep in mind that a martini glass is wider at the top so you are loosing a lot of drink w/o that last 1/4 which is at least a full shot. I mentioned it to the bartender and he said "sorry ,that's our pour". I explained that I'd been here many times and that I'd always gotten a glass filled to the top. "sorry" was his response. I called a manager and got the same response. Apparently this is their new pour. I am sad to say I will not be going here again, I can not see paying $11 for practically 1/2 of a martini, this is the sort of martini you would get in a lesser establishment for $6 in those tiny little martini glasses. If you are going to charge $11 for a martini, make it a real martini. I imagine you are safe with their beer. Goodbye Egans, I will miss you but there are a lot of other places nearby. AS read more

I've been here four times now for dinner, and every time I've been really satisfied. The food is pricey, but everything I've tried has been delicious and cooked correctly. The Hangar Steak was one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. They also have a pretty nice selection of beer, which is always a plus. read more

I hate to leave a 'meh' review because this place could be a great spot. Nice location, big bar/lots of seating, outdoor space to enjoy the nice weather. Unfortunately I'm disappointed EVERY single time I've come here over the years and will likely cross it off my list entirely. Overpriced drinks, seriously mediocre food that never seems to come out right the first time (I've never had a great meal here...nothing...even a side of fries are disappointing), and something about the vibe is just slightly off-putting and uncomfortable. If you want a divey bar with great pub food, go to Tierneys. If you want delish drinks and upscale food, go to Pig & Prince or now The Crosby. If you want all of these things plus an outdoor space, The Verona Inn is awesome. Been here a handful of times since unfortunately, it's one of the few bars in the area. It has a decent setup with potential to be an awesome place, but it ends up trying too hard to be everything in one (semi-divey atmosphere, with loud music, yet doesn't let you wear hat backwards) Experiences for the most part have been either mediocre or poor. It gets packed on weekends and service is slow and inattentive. If you want to sit in the back and order food, it's extremely disorganized and you usually have to flag someone down. My last visit was the worst experience to date. After admittedly leaving a lower than normal tip at the bar (as I mentioned, service isn't great), someone at the bar (gentleman with an accent) came up to me and confronted me about it, literally handing me a new receipt to make me add more to the tip. To me, asking for a higher tip is the worst thing a bar or restaurant can do (there's always a REASON why the tip is low). It made our group very uncomfortable and we will look to take our business elsewhere on weekends. read more

Two of us enjoyed the sampler appetizer platter, which was a good value, and after that we had to scale back on what we were going to order, opting for an arugula salad and the sliders. Because she knew we originally had eyes for the Tipperary Burger (with cashel blue cheese, Irish rasher bacon and a chutney), the waitress suggested we have the sliders with blue cheese, and she brought a side of the bacon and chutney to go with. I would like to start off by saying this was my first visit to Egan's. As I enter the establishment I see a very pretty patio and I think to myself, wow this place must be nice should really come see it when its sunny and warm out. Then I enter and I see a place that is large, very well lit and the decor was beautiful... and I think wow I'm really feeling the ambiance. We sit at the bar and wait for the rest of our group to arrive...the week was long and we are all looking foward to letting our hair down and enjoy a few drinks and maybe a bite or too. The night starts off great. And then after several hours of us ordering a few rounds and some appetizers and meals (approx. 3hrs +) things take a turn. Upon returning from a 2 minute trip to the ladies room I return to my group to find one of my friends in a heated conversation witch I assumed to be with another patron. Low and behold it was not a patron but a staff of the establishment! And I'm trying to figure out how could this happen in 2 minutes? What could change my mild mannered friend from a happy patron to one so distraught? My friend was asked to turn his hat around (he was wearing it backwards). When asked why he was told it was a rule of the establishment. Now this struck him as well as the rest of us, as very confusing. First of all we had been in the same spot for several hours and not one employee stated anything in regards to this policy as we ordered appetizers, meals and drinks!! As we question this we are told by another that the policy starts at 9pm...again we question because at this point it was well past 9...in fact pretty close to 10pm. Even now looking at this very website I see a picture of a patron with his hat on backwards...hmmm and it makes me think the patron in the photograph is white and my friend is not...I hate to think this but was there a different motive involved? Up until this incident we were all having a wonderful time. After spending considerable amounts of money this experience left us all on a sour note. So bad that we will not be returning. If this was truly a policy of the establishment you may want to consider a better way of making this "rule" known and if a more ugly reason is behind this...shame on you!! Came tonight for mom's birthday dinner, both my parents had been with cousins a couple of times, and this was my first time coming to this place. Usually I do not like bars, I find them entirely too loud and crowded, but this place is quite open and spacious, and there is an outdoor dining area. Getting seated once we walked in was confusing as it's not clear where the main entrance is or where you're supposed to go in. There's a parking lot round the back (behind Walnut Street) with an entrance, and that's where the host/hostess's tall desk is rather than at the Walnut Street front entrance. So, not knowing who was supposed to be guiding us to a table, we awkwardly kind of walked through the place with the help of a few clueless waitstaff to the hostess in the back of the restaurant from where we entered who sat us outside when we asked. Apart from the seating bumps in the road, the food was absolutely delicious, and service was good. Friendly waiter. I had red snapper for the first time, with some fragrant tasty South Asian rice. My mom's falafel was too spicy, she couldn't eat it. We also kind of filled up on delicious appetisers and just sat outside leisurely as it got dark out. An evening well-spent. read more

This place is God awful. I even feel too generous giving them 1 star, but Yelp has no option for 0. I came here with a large group of people on a Friday night. We walked right in without any bouncers carding us. They only greeted us. Place was decently crowded (with all obnoxious college kids), and there was music playing only outside which is bizarre to me. After drinking there ALL night, we decided to leave. On our way out, one of the bouncers was checking me out and saying inappropriate things to me, desperately trying to grasp my attention. He then asked for my ID, and I told him we were leaving. He started to get angry and kept asking me to see it (in a threatening tone), so finally I showed him my valid ID. My brother was getting annoyed, so he then said to the bouncer "do you want to see mine too????" . This douchebag immediately went Incredible Hulk on us and pushed by brother down the stairs outside. With everyone out there watching. So basically, because the bouncer wanted my number and didn't get it, he had to act like a tough guy someway somehow. We immediately left and regretted going there in the first place. It's a shame that there aren't too many bar options in town. Egan's should be shut down for their numerous flaws. Drinks are overpriced, people who go there are 21 and younger, and the staff SUCKS. Woof. read more

I've only been here once, and it was right before the holidays. The crowd seemed a little older, which was nice because I hate a "college bar" feel. It might have been because colleges were on break, so I could be wrong about the crowd. My friends and I liked the beer/wine list and tried a few new ones. Any bar that serves Lindemann's gets a gold star in my book ;-) We had the wings as an appetizer, and the maple flavor of them was really unique...the sweet and salty thing together really made them memorable. I had the scallops entree, and it was fantastic...I would definitely recommend it. Overall, the menu isn't very extensive...my friends both had steaks and enjoyed them thoroughly. I'm giving three stars for now, but if I go back and it still doesn't feel like a college bar, then I would upgrade to four stars. read more
