I'm from the Alabama Gulf Coast and we know seafood! This was the worst and most expensive seafood I've ever had and I'm 79 yo?!?! You are served your meal in plastic bags with plastic cutlery?! The seasoning was basically cayenne pepper and lots of red food coloring that took a while to wash off my hands after we finished?! I had a lobster tail that was overcooked and tough but is managed to wrestle it and my king crab legs to get the overcooked meat out....after all it cost an arm and a leg for my meal?! I decided to give this place another try, after trying another location a while ago and I'm so glad we did!! Staff is friendly, sometimes a little hard to find even though there were only 4 other tables seated on a Monday night. We loved the seafood combo. We liked the head-on shrimp, mussels, and snow crab. We also liked the potatoes and the garlic noodles as a side were so delicious!! We were pleasantly surprised. We didn't get drinks, but they seemed to have a fun selection of non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. This place is I would say casual and fun to go with friends as opposed to a date night haha as it gets messy with everything going on. We got our usual: snow crab, calamari, sausages, shrimp, mussels, and crayfish. As soon we got home, we started eating. My husband got the extra spicy cap't loui sauce for our order. I was not happy with him for choosing that. But we still ate the food. The food was good. No paricular issue there while we were eating. However the next morning, we both were experiencing diarrhea issue. My husband believes that it was the extra spicy sauce that was causing the diarrhea. We never had that problem with the Fort Lee location. So yeah not sure what caused our stomach problem. read more

Walked in to celebrate a graduation and the place was empty, clean and inviting atmosphere, our host was so friendly that we ended up ordering all his recommendations and EVERYTHING was 10/10, house sauce medium spiced 4 lb combo with mussels, king crab, clams, calamari and shrimp was blissfully delicious! Raw oysters were fresh and their cocktail sauce is tasty! They make a fire garlic noodles that is a must have. Their lunch special fried calamari and fries are fried to crispy perfection. came here for a mardi gras event i hosted! the staff was incredibly welcoming and organized. we were a loud group that was a lot to handle. we also made a big mess. $1 oysters were delish. decent size & cleaned well. id come back for these on a tuesday. only complaint was the shrimp poboy. i dont think this is the right sauce that they put on top, it threw off the whole sandwich. i also wish the shrimp batter had some spice in it. it was more salty if anything. the cajun and regular fries were good, but hard to tell the difference. we think one tasted sweet. buy one of these juices in a pouch! these are so sweet but fun to drink out of because they also light up. I ordered a pound of clams and a half pound of head on shrimp in the garlic butter sauce. I also had a side of garlic noodles. The seafood was 10/10. The clams were plump and meaty and the shrimp were delicious. I was delighted. The garlic butter sauce was 6/10. I love me some garlic, but it was honestly too much. I will definitely try the house sauce next time. Garlic noodles were 5/10. These were a miss for me. Not very flavorful. I would try fries next time. Have been here many times and it's always been 5 stars, I'm wondering if they are under new management. Ordered 4lbs where you get "extra" sides, so we ordered corn which says (3), only 4 corns came in the bag, and only 1 golf ball size potato in the bag. That means if we didn't get the extra side of corn there would have been 1 corn and 1 small potato in a 4lb bag order. Before there was always much more than this. Now the food taste is still always what it was, amazing. We do love it here, maybe this was a one time incident or maybe they are cutting back. But the prices are going up with less food in the bag. I've been wanting to try this spot for awhile now and we finally had the chance. It's BYOB, we ordered the Mr Rich & Pina Colada and added or drink. Both were very good, a little sweet but tasty. I had the snow crab boil, the seasoned sauce (Cap't Louie) was really good but the crab wasn't seasoned. Hubby ate the Shrimp Po Boy and said it was good. Sadly, I went today and compared it to the last time I went about two months ago and saw how the portions had changed. Last time and today were almost the same. The second-to-last time I went, the food was smaller, but still good. But today I went and the lobster was basically just the tail. So today was the first time I came here. I've been to many shrimp boil places before but I was really disappointed with the portion of the shrimp. I ordered 1 pound of shrimp only and amen I got home I saw that they added a potato and a corn on the cob. Now I know they charge by Ryner pound so for 25.00 i figured i wouldget a good portion of shrimp but that was not the case. With the potato and corn it split my shrimp. The girls and I got together to get seafood, and I couldn't wait to try this spot. When I arrived I was lucky to find parking close. I walked in and was greeted and found my party. Iralee was our server, and she was good! I ordered the mussels and headless shrimp with the Cap't Louie sauce medium. They messed up the order a bit, so I had to wait while the others ate. I'm extremely torn on how to review.... I had high HIGH hopes for Loui but the ball was dropped. I need to say and be clear that, the STAFF WAS AMAZING. My review is more on the price point for what was being offered, variety of options and overall taste of the food. My friends and I wanted to stop by for an after work app/drink catch up. For some reason we may have looked up the wrong location and thought there was a bar here. Drinks, gone. Luckily they do follow suit of the Montclair trend and offer deliveries from local stores! We were excited to have some oysters; unfortunately none were available...We then decided to just try some apps. For the quick after work hangout, it wasn't a fun experience of food. Its also hard to keep up with the competition in the area- Montclair has a high store front rent, which means higher menu prices. Unfortunately there are other similar options in the area that are more worthwhile. This was one of the most disappointing experiences I've had in months, made especially negative by the unethical business practices I saw with my own eyes. My chum and I stopped here for lunch yesterday around 1PM on a very rainy/chilly day. The place was pretty empty save one or two tables, and didn't fill up too much while we were there - the weather definitely kept a lot of potential customers away. The interior is VERY cool; understandably there's a crab shack/sea shanty vibe to this place, and I liked that the market prices for the seafood boil options were prominently displayed in multiple locations to allow for informed decisions in that regard. I ordered the 1-pound crawfish boil option ($16 or $17). For the portion, I thought the price was pretty reasonable - I've personally attended multiple crawfish boils in Louisiana, and I always forget that the crawfish are significantly smaller up here. I probably wouldn't get this option again, but I certainly don't think the restaurant did anything "wrong" with this - it's just a lot of effort for a minimal amount of tail meat. I DID think they skimped a bit on the boil ingredients. You were offered additional potatoes, corn, etc. for an extra few dollars, but the potato/corn that were part of the underlying boil consisted of literally one piece of potato and one tiny piece of corn on the cob. I can do without corn on the cob personally, but it would have been nice to see multiple pieces of potato, especially with a boil that by definition doesn't have a lot of meat involved. We did order the garlic noodles as an add-on to the boils (about $7), which was a good choice. It was recommended by the waitress and helped add a few calories to a meal that didn't have a lot, beyond the fact that it was tasty and paired well with the boil. I got the Cap't Loui sauce, which was good but most of the flavor predictably was at the bottom of the bag. In hindsight, I would have been more proactive about mixing the sauce in more on my end. The negatives unfortunately significantly outweigh the positives. While our waitress was nice, the restaurant was understaffed and it literally was just her as hostess, waitress, busser and who knows what else. The initial service was fine but predictably tanked once the place had multiple customers to take care of. Someone else came in at the very end to process our check, otherwise I don't know when we would have left. There should have been at least one other person working there on a Sunday afternoon, even in the monsoon-like conditions. This was the worst part though by far: when we placed two Beignet orders, the waitress swiveled around the napkin dispenser, revealing a "deal" for us to take advantage of - in exchange for a Yelp and/or Google review on the spot, the restaurant would give us a free dessert. There's no way to categorize this other than out-and-out bribery and they should be ashamed of themselves, as should anyone who not only took advantage of this, but didn't disclose the free dessert within the context of their review. Absolutely shameful and disgusting, and 100% calls into question the higher average rating for this place. Of course they ended up in the Yelp Top 100 for 2022 - they literally bought off people to write reviews. And who on earth would write a negative review in those circumstances, knowing that a) the waitress needs to look at the review to verify the deal and b) the review hinges on free food? At the very least, Yelp should be removing them from whatever algorithm they're using to gauge the popularity of businesses. Beyond that, how self-defeating is this? If you're a credible restaurant trying to utilize constructive feedback, you're certainly not getting it here. On principle, I wouldn't come back. And if you're seriously looking at their reviews to determine whether you should frequent Cap't Loui's, I wouldn't even bother wasting your time on the two- or three- sentence 5-star reviews - they were written by people with no integrity who thought it was more important to save $4 on a beignet than provide informative commentary for future patrons. Unfortunately our order was wrong as we got the wrong proteins though the restaurant made good and did refund us. I just was a bit underwhelmed with the main broiler bag that we got. It was just sort of over sauced and overcooked. We also split a soft shell crab fry basket which was well seasoned but not as crispy as I would have liked. They currently have $1 oysters all day every day until the end of August - so fresh and huge (way bigger than the ones we had a week ago in Greenport, Long Island). If that's not enough to get you in the door, their cap't loui sauce for the cajun boil is out of this world. We got mild spice and it was just the right amount of kick, not too salty and balanced with delicious garlic flavor. We dipped our garlic noodles and lemon pepper fries into this sauce after devouring the shrimp and crawfish boil. The shrimp was the star of the boil - SO juicy, sweet, and jumbo in size. I even loved the corn and potato in the boil as well. If you didn't plan ahead for BYOB, not to worry - you can even order wine/beer from the local liquor store using a QR code and get it delivered right to your table (free delivery)! The place was a very different experience compared to fine dining. It was lots of fun from paper tablecloths to bags filled with delicious seafood in yummy sauce. The lobster roll was delicious as were the lemon pepper fries. They have fun lemonades in pouches and funnel fries for dessert that were fabulous! Just a fun night for some senior citizens.
