This was my main go to spot before all of the Pandemic stuff started. Great food, prices, and customer service. I went there today and was very disappointed. I understand the times we live in are topsy turvey but it shouldn't change your approach to business. THE PRICES have SKYROCKETED and the portions remain the same. What I paid $7.25 for back in March is now close to $10.00. In addition to that, if you have to go through the Drive-Through at least give the Customer some napkins and condiments, (Duck Sauce, Hot sauce etc) of which I received none nor was even asked if I desired any. I used to takeout from Eggroll when I lived in Columbia. My standard to go dish was Taiwanese yen su jee. I simply was addicted to this dish and would never get bored eating it again and again. The menu has lots of options - all reasonably priced, the food was prepared quickly and you get a TON of it. I ordered the honey sesame chicken and an egg roll. The chicken was delicious... not too sweet. The egg roll was crisp on the outside and stuffed with a wonderful blend of flavors. The rice was just plain fried rice and it was greasy. That may be my only complaint. I would try it again but maybe make it a shrimp fried or veggie fried rice. My friend did get the fried wantons and at $1.55 for about 5 of them it is a must not miss item! They were crunchy on the outside (but not hard) and were filled with pork and cheese. Totes yum. It shouldn't surprise me, since this place is so good, but I'm updating my review with a new favorite. I tried the Taiwanese Yen Su Jee and was glad I did. Have to add it to my list of favorites. It is bits of chicken, battered and deep fried, which isn't particularly interesting on its own, but they toss the fried chicken and rice in a flavorful mix of stir fried seasonings: basil, peppers, onions, and perhaps other stuff, probably some fish sauce and/or soy sauce. The seasoning mix is terrific. Spicy without being overpowering. This is a simple dish with a lot of flavor. It is dry, not saucy, which is a nice change sometimes. As is the norm here, the portion is large; you can get a half order to try it or add an egg roll and it is perfect. read more

This has been my family's go to spot for chicken for over 20 years. The portions are huge, enough to share between two people and still have leftovers. Because, without a doubt, the crispy meat-filled rolls at Eggroll Chen blow out the competition. They are, in one word, sublime. This is in no shape or form an ironic or satirical review. Eggroll Chen makes the best eggroll I've ever had in my life. The first aromatic bite was filled with spices and succulent juices that spilled down my chin. I was startled. When I walked into the restaurant, the eggrolls were sitting pre-made under a heater. I expected them to be dry and bland. Not so. The eggroll gods at Chen's have engineered some sort of magic device that keeps their eggrolls comforting and warm. Or, I was the lucky patron that got a fresh eggroll. Which, in that case, please. . .I beg you. . .do yourself a favor and figure out when their eggrolls come out hot and fresh. Or, Eggroll Chen owners, put out a massive Krispy Kreme-esque sign on top of your establishment. "Hot and Fresh Eggrolls." If you build it, they will come. All hyperbole aside, this was a very good eggroll that was more stuffed and flavorful than any other eggroll I've ever tasted. I almost gave Chen's a 3 star because the food was just. . .well. . .meh. But, my god, was I wrong the next day. Chef Danny Bowien once said (on one of his many media outlets) that Chinese food is always good no matter it's form. Because, at the end of the day, there's many kinds of Chinese food. Quick and dirty mall Chinese, authentic szechuan, upscale fusion, etc. But here folks, Chen's does it best. They make some of the best, pure Chinese-American take-out. Why do I say best take-out? Because it taste better the next day. Waking up the next morning and opening the little, white Styrofoam box was the closest I'll ever come to opening the Ark of the Covenant. That, my friends, is the true test of good Chinese takeout. One night in your fridge blends the flavors so perfectly that it instantly goes from zero to one-hundred real quick (yes, that was a Drake reference). One patron who recently posted on Yelp complained that the General Tso's chicken was soggy. Well, Mindy, looks like you didn't let the flavors marinate properly in the fridge overnight. Because the secret to Chinese food like this is to binge watch Netlifx for eight hours, wake up in the wee dawn, tiptoe to your fridge, and then, only then, put those saucy chicken bites in your mouth. And be happy. Because it's the best Chinese take-out in Columbia, SC. One note: although I did refer to the food as Chinese (for the sake of simplicity) the restaurant is advertised as Taiwanese not Chinese. Pretty annoying to wait for food to be done and receive it not even warm. I'm sure the food would've tasted better if it was hot or even warm but it honestly tasted like left overs. Best Chinese food I've had yet. And when my wife says she loves Chinese food somewhere it's definately good. She said it was the best fried rice even better than her favorite hometown Chinese restaurants. The lomein was delicious the sauce and veggies were cooked to perfection. The kids shared the sweet and sour chicken with white rice (which I tried) and it was very tasty. The meat tasted great and like real meat not gooyee or rubbery like they are at worst. They are very friendly and the interior is very clean and nice :) and they have a convenient pick up window for take out. I will definately be coming back and telling everyone about how great this was. The portions were extremly generous considering the price. Previously to this evening, my review would have been significantly different, in a positive way. However - tonight my boyfriend and I stopped by to grab dinner around 8:50pm. This location closed at 9:30. We've eaten here several times in the past few months and have had zero issues. I like their fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. But tonight when we got the food home and started eating it, my boyfriends noodles tasted EXACTLY like dish soap. Like they had been soaking the noodles in dish water for the past several hours. I love this place. The food is always fresh and made to order, the owner really stays on top of things. I've never had a bad experience. Usually I order sweet and sour chicken or honey sesame chicken that comes with fried rice, an order of fried wontons and an egg roll, which is enough to share between two and have leftovers for lunch the next day. If I could rate this business a 0 star, I most definitely would. I came in on my lunch break around 12:00pm and ordered a seasame chicken with pork fried rice meal and an egg roll. The cashier rung up my order and the total came to $20 even though the menu stated $8.25. I then questioned the total and the cashier stated he adjusted it and said it was now $14.23 (which still was not the correct amount and he stated there was an up charge for pork LOL). I finally get my meal and get into my car to check it. I did not have an egg roll, my rice was wet and the sesame chicken was not fresh, the pork that should have been in the pork fried rice was WHITE (almost looked like boiled chicken breast). So I go back inside to ask for the egg roll I didn't receive and was told the egg roll didn't come with my meal (Mind you I ordered it on the side). So because I was already on break and had to head back to work, I refused to go back and forth and at this point left highly disappointed and upset. If you pick up at the drive through, check you order, don't trust them! Out of the last 4 orders, 3 orders did not include all the items ordered and paid for. The only order they got "right" was when I complained about the previous order. On the most recent order, the wings and egg rolls where left out. The guy who answered the phone consulted with the girl who was running the drive through window and then claimed everything was in the order. Next the manager got on the phone. He did offer to give a credit on my next order, but I actually wanted it tonight. I understand that mistakes happen, but 3 in a single month is too excessive. Too bad, I have been ordering from eggroll for 15 years and almost weekly for the last 5 years. Oh and by the way, the manager hung up on me. I hope this gets fixed but the manager really didn't seem too interested in fixing the problem. He was more interested in getting me off the phone. What a shame! read more

The rangoon, eh, i can do without... or if i'm really craving it i can probably just drive to panda express. However, the taiwanese beef noodle is always good. they have a good amount of meat and veggies in it but even then i like to take it to-go and add in more veggies. The broth for the soup is beefy and very flavorful. If i could find a place that sold tendon here i would make it and add it in. Back at my favorite taiwanese place outside of columbia, the beef noodle would be sold as a beef and tendon noodle soup. BEST THING EVER. tip: if you're calling for a to-go order, it typically takes about 15 mins. speak clearly because they could get your order wrong. if they do, just let them know, they'll switch it out for the right one. :) read more

That's gonna be a "no" from me. I just wanted some reliably decent Chinese food for lunch and you figure places like this are all kind of the same: not overly spectacular, but good enough to hit the spot. It's kind of hard to get Chinese food wrong, right? Well I stand corrected. This was the driest/crispy - est honey sesame chicken I have ever had. And it had a really weird aftertaste (kinda made me nauseous) that lingers until you wash it down with something. I've had better sesame chicken at the food court in the mall on a bad day. To add insult to injury, it's paired with a heaping mound of greasy fried rice with little to no flavor. It also had the weird aftertaste. My last complaint is they require a $10 minimum on credit/debit card purchases. I know this is not a deal breaker, but it is still mildly irritating. I'm giving them a second star because the establishment seemed clean, and the girl taking my order was helpful and super sweet. Also because I haven't tried other items on the menu. First off, I have been eating at this restaurant since it was the Egg roll Station in a rundown Dairy Queen and have always loved it. The food and service have always been good up until recently and this grieves me greatly. The counter help was rude to start with my last visit. Instead of a hello I got a what you want. Seriously, asked me "what you want" in a curt mumble mouth manner. I thought it was just me but my son stepped up to order and she just glared at him. He asked if she was ready politely to which she pursed her lips and said "yeah" with a head bob. After all the rudeness, my order was messed up with her leaving out the sweet and sour sauce and hot mustard I asked for twice. I really miss the old service this restaurant used to provide. The food is still excellent but I still won't return. I would have to recommend Little Panda on Forest Drive to anyone that asked. My husband has been eating at Egg Roll Chen since college. The first time he took me here (telling me that it was going to be great) I was very dubious. The old building was a bit on the frightening side. BUT the food was fantastic! The new building is much better! Your food comes in styrofoam containers...and it is not fancy in the least. Still, the food is cooked fresh and is so reasonable! Anytime we come through Columbia, we always stop at "The Chen"! The Chinese food in columbia tends to be terrible but at least this one has vegetarian options. First note that this place is dirt cheap and has huge portions. This is not fine dining. The vegetables tend to be overlooked bit plentiful. The rice is served in massive portions and again tends to be a but overlooked. Don't try the brown rice, it's just white rice with some soy sauce mixed in. I've seen this several times since moving to Columbia. Weird stuff. You will be glad they serve your dinner in a large styrofoam container because there is no way you can eat it all none go. For vegetarians there are actually vegetarian egg rolls but you must ask for them and expect an extra wait as they fry them fresh. There are a couple of tofu dishes on the menu but you can get tofu in most dishes if you ask nicely. They don't advertise either of these things. No matter what dish you get it seems to have the same medley of vegetables with it so no need to explore the menu too far. read more

Not impressed. Saw that this was one of the few Chinese takeout spots close by that had a fair share of reviews. There was no special lunch menu and they charge for your fortune cookie. Their combos only include one type of rice (brown fried) and an entree which is the first time I've ever seen that. I've made it a habit to order general tso chicken to understand a base line, and it was not impressive. It came with fried pieces of chicken without the campus General tso sauce you'd expect. Had lunch here with a group of 4. The inside is small and very out of date, but there was plenty of seating available. Inside there is a fridge with some Pepsi products and Gatorades to pair with your meal. I ordered the chicken with broccoli, egg drop soup and an egg roll. My meal also came with fried rice ($12). Unfortunately I did not enjoy the chicken/broccoli. I get weird about chicken and I felt like it needed a few more minutes to cook and I just couldn't eat it. The broccoli and sauce were good though, the rice was kind of mushy. If I were to go back I'd probably just get a vegetarian option. The egg roll was just ok; I had a few bites of it. The soup was my favorite part of the meal, I mean it's hard to mess up a basic staple like egg drop soup (but I've seen it done) so I was happy to find that it was very good.
