There's just something about your hometown Mexican restaurant that you can't help but love. My family and I visit every time I visit home and I'm never disappointed. The staff still knows me and my family and we're always met with amazing service and quality food. Their prices have increased over the years but are on par with other Mexican restaurants. I love the pick 3 or 4 deal that leaves me with at least 1 more meal of leftovers. Their margaritas are also amazing, with just a traditional lime margarita on the rocks being my go to. Warning though - even the small margarita is huge and they make them strong. This is a small town restaurant where most people know one another. Don't let it being in a gas station strip mall stop you - this place is amazing! read more

I was in the Franklin/Whiteland area around lunch time so I decided to stop in El Abuelo. It's located inside of a strip mall, and the inside of the restaurant is pretty standard for Mexican restaurants. I ordered the lunch chicken fajitas and it came with beans and rice. Oddly enough, there was no lettuce/pico/sour cream combo that came with it. Another odd thing is the orange beans. I have never seen orange beans before and was a little reluctant to try them. They turned out to be a pretty good. The chicken fajita meat on the other hand tasted like it was scooped out of a pot of chicken from the back. Suspiciously enough, it came too quickly as well. Don't get me wrong, it tasted fresh, but it definitely was not grilled. It did not come out steaming, sizzling, hot either. It was fine for what it was but calling it fajitas really isn't fair. There aren't many places to choose from out this way so this is the place is a pretty good bet. I would eat here again if I'm in the area. read more

This place should have 5 stars. This is our favorite Mexican restaurant to go to. The staff is super friendly and the food is bomb diggity. I have honestly never had a bad experience here and we sometimes go here once a week. Also, they are always very quick getting food out. I don't even have a picture because i ate it all! I live in the northside, so it's a great when I'm visiting my friend in Franklin and we come to Abuelo for Mexican! I ordered the bombay burrito with chorizo instead of carnitas and it was to die for! I also really like their guacamole. Burritos are giant. I always get 2 meals out of it. I can't imagine how big the burrito is that they say they'll pay for if you eat the whole thing. Lol Worth the try! read more

Get ready to loose your belt a notch! Don't drive to fast or you'll miss EL Abuelo located in the Whiteland retail strip mall next to Burger King. The Circle K gas station sits in the parking lot with it, Marcos pizza and a few others. There is plenty of parking in the private lot. You enter the restaurant to plethora of Mexican food smells that sends your hunger soaring, and authentic Mexican ambience. I like that you seat yourself, especially since I love my booths!;). The service is prompt and courteous. They serve chips and salsa to keep you busy while your meal is prepared. The portions are large enough to get full and have leftovers! I had the EL Abuelo nachos and they are "finger licking good!!" The steak, chicken and shrimp were cooked to perfection! I will definitely be trying their fajitas on a follow up visit. The most expensive Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. The food was ok. Was not impressed. But it was alright.

What a cute little treat this place was! First things first, the decor is absolutely beautiful! The staff are very accommodating and friendly as well! This go around we didn't order any alcohol but stuck to the real star , the food . The chips and salsa that were brought to the table were so fresh. The salsa had a slightly more saltier edge than I'm used to be but the cilantro mingled in and toned it down, it really made a big difference and was delicious. I ordered the Burrito Gigante (pork) and it comes covered in cheese sauce and served with lettuce, onions and sour cream. My fiancé ordered the Burrito Trio Grande which includes steak, chicken and shrimp. It comes with rice and refried beans and the burrito is also covered in cheese and red sauce. When I tell you these portions are HUGE, they're huge lol! Everything came out in a timely matter and tasted fresh and authentic. We will definitely be back for more and for sure will be ordering my second favorite thing to Mexican food, margariiiiiitaaas! Oh, and everything came out to 32.00 dollars! read more

The food was ok. However the server (Ana) was extremely rude. My son found a hair in his food (I saw it hanging out of his mouth and pulled it out with food) and she argued with me about where the hair came from. She finally called someone over and in Spanish told them that I had put the hair in his food. They were rude, never said sorry or anything. Not a place I'd recommend going too. read more

Highly upsetting tonight to go here and try something new with my family. We were seated right away and was given chips and salsa and our server jose got our drink order. He then took our order and we never seen him again until our meal was finished and all of our drinks were empty. Our food order was brought out by someone else and it was wrong. We asked another server to fix it and bring extra napkins. 20 min later we had to flag another server to fill our drinks. When the server finally arrived I had to ask him where have you been, he said making drinks at the bar. All in all all the food is 3 to 5 bucks higher then any other Mexican food around. We all had waters and 3 simple dinner and one small cheese dip and it was 43.00. Not worth the price and that server is the worst. I don't know why he even deserved a tip. Food is always good! But the problem was I had to go back in the store 3 times, because my food was made wrong. Ordered a wet Burrito with no sour cream, there was sour cream on it. I also ordered a medium salsa. I go back in with my food. She threw the salsa away and gave me back a baby cup of salsa. I paid 5.99 for a medium cup or salsa, and she gave me back a free salsa. This establishment is a South side gem! The menu is very complete with all the proteins including fish. The queso is so creamy. The guac has a distinctive flavor that only is compelling to eat more. The service staff is fun even when they are so busy. Thursday night even at 7:30 was a short wait. I am so thankful my good friend recommended this restaurant to me. Decor is definitely 'americanized mexican' all the bright colored furniture you can get at the roadside tourist shops across the border. Giant menu so plenty of choices. The salsa has the best taste. You can taste the seasonings, onions and cilantro. I usually order chicken fajita taco salad or a streak quesadilla with rice and beans. The menu has so much to offer. Its the largest menu I have seen at a Mexican restaurant. The prices are very affordable. Not high priced at all. The restaurant is super clean. I was surprised at how clean the bathroom was. The servers are so welcoming and friendly. We have never had bad service here. If you haven't ate here, you must try it. This is now our favorite place to eat. Great little Mexican restaurant in Whiteland! Same options as every other place you could go to, but very tasty nonetheless. Most definitely not very authentic, but I could go to my Abuela's house if that's what I wanted. Salsa is very good and staff is usually pretty quick and friendly. I ordered in for takeout around 9:20, knowing they closed at 10 one night. Most kitchens ask that you order before 9:30 if they close at 10, so I thought this would be plenty of time and would not cause any inconveniences, but they seemed quite irritated as I came in at 9:45 to pick up my meal, already were mopping floors and the open sign was off. Still, have had no other issues with this place, both dine-in and carry-out! read more

I tried them again because my fiancé wanted to go again. We had the same waiter, only we received even worse service this time. He acted like he couldn't understand us, and he was barely understandable by mumbling and barely speaking English as well. He ignored our table the whole time, but seemed to be attentive to the other tables all around us. It was rude and bizarre. The guacamole was terrible. I decided to order it this time. It was so salty, it was beyond inedible. I finally was able to tell him when he dropped the bill off at our table. He acted like he didn't know what I was trying to tell him.
