Been coming to el agave for about a year, I'm glad that it surviving in the space as that strip mall doesn't do very well. I'm very finicky about Mexican food given that I'm from the south where it's truly authentic. I feel like the flavors are right on par in the portion sizes are large for the cost. Always friendly, and they try to do their best to accommodate allergies as we have an allergy sensitive group. I definitely prefer it over Cinco de Mayo down the street. read more

This is a review for El Agave in Bristow, VA. The restaurant was at the end of a strip mall. The restaurant has a large banner on one side, which could be seen from the major road, outside of the strip mall. The parking area was very compact and small. The exterior of the restaurant was clean, yet somehow seemingly desolate. The restaurant has large windows which could have been utilized for advertising or props to attract customers to the location, but it was left bare and plain. This location has 2 doors where you can enter the building - the main entrance and a side patio about 15 ft away around the side. The restaurant has a nice covered and lit patio, that could seat 12-16 people. Inside the restaurant it was well lit and clean. Two things I really like about this restaurant's interior was that the music was kept at a reasonable volume and the restrooms were clearly marked, high up on the ceiling, with a large arrow for everyone to see. There's nothing worse than going to a restaurant and wandering around like a drunk duck trying to find where they hid the bathroom in some corner somewhere. The bathrooms at this location were clean. They were single occupant gender separated restrooms with modern appliances. Auto-flush toilets, sinks, and soap dispensers. Now on to the part we're all here for: The food and service was decent. I was not "Wow!"-ed by the food.. it was just bare minimum what you would expect... Nothing special. When I went here, I got the "Fajitas Texana", which consisted of steak, chicken, shrimp, onions, peppers, and a side of flour tortillas, sour cream, Mexican rice, refried beans, guacamole, lettuce and tomato. Honestly, I would have preferred an option for a tray of just sour cream, lettuce, tomato and cheese. The meat seasoning was right at the level of almost barely being there, right on the low end of pleasantly there, but tasted good... The onions and peppers were in large supply, apparently, because that was 50+% of the tray. The meat was sliced thin and was quite good. I only wish there was more of it, especially for the $19+ paid for it... Since I'm not a huge fan of peppers, I was able to get 2 tortillas filled with what meats were supplied. It was a good meal, and I left happy. The chips and salsa at the beginning of the meal was very nice. The chips were corn-based chips. The salsa has just enough heat in it to be pleasant and not bland. Usually I don't partake in ANY spicy foods, and I thought it was good. The service was decent. In my opinion it was a bit slow. I was one of the less than 5 people in the place for a late lunch time (after 2:30pm) meal. It was ten minutes of staring at the same menu before the order was taken. It is quite a large menu though, so I would understand that they get a lot of people who don't know what they're hungry for asking them to come back in a bit. I stayed for about an hour and was only checked on twice. It would have been nice to have gotten a second drink, since mine was low and had to be paced, but I wasn't too fussed about not getting another one. The music was a great selection of traditional music, tuned to just the right volume. Not too loud, not too quiet. It's a great place to go to if you want to be left alone and have a decent quiet ordinary meal with no extravagance or frills. read more

Came in in a Saturday night around 545. There was a 10 top next to us, so the service was pretty slow. Chips and salsa came right away, but it everything else took a while (ordering drinks, the ordering food, the getting our food). Now normally this would be the death knell for a restaurant, but not in this case. The salsa and my margarita were so good it made waiting for the food completely tolerable. Similarly, the food was incredible and totally worth the wait. We got the Chile Verde and beef enchiladas a la carte. The Chile was some of the best I've had since leaving Colorado. The kiddo wolfed down what he could of the enchiladas *having filled up on chips and salsa earlier. Overall it was worth it. Some majestic thing called Fajitas Tropical was served to the next table over that I have to come back for. read more

Hidden gem! This location in Bristow is excellent as well as the sister location in the Plains/Marshall. Absolutely delicious Mexican food; great sauces, salsas and margarites. I highly recommend the Pollo Loco dish - the chicken breasts are thin & tender and smothered in a cheesy chorizo sauce served with rice and fresh vegetables. read more

*Another Update* 6/5/2020 After loving my lunch on Monday I decided to try something else off the lunch special menu; today I got the chicken chimichanga lunch special and it is so good! Stuffed with shredded chicken that is very flavorful and the large portion of rice, refried beans, and guacamole salad on the side made it even better. Great value for lunch. Went to dinner with my girlfriend last night and it was amazing. We ordered two jumbo margaritas and two entrees. Mine was the Steak-Mex and hers was one of the combination menu items. First the dinner rush was a real thing. They didn't have a lot of servers but they did their best to accommodate everyone in a timely manner. I myself am not a huge partaker in Mexican food but this location had the most delicious rice and beans in my entire life. The Steak-Mex was also expertly cooked and it felt like they cared about every ingredient in the food. I agree with all the reviewers here that there is something special about this place. We loved this Mexican restaurant! I'm picky about my chile rellenos and this place does it right! My bf had the steak & camarones which he devoured. I managed to get a piece of the steak before he finished it. It was so delicious & tender, especially with the sauce they top it with. We also had some margaritas. I'm classic and got the lime marg. I am sorry I wasted calories and my daughter $$ on this meal. I ordered La Grande which consisted of a hard taco, a Chile relleno, enchiladas, rice and refried beans. All beef. The taco was just ok. The meat on the salty side. The enchilada had a sweet tomato sauce that reminded me can spaghetti. The batter of the Chile relleno was thick and soggy. We also ordered taquitos which were dry and tasteless. The two stars is for the rice and beans...the only saving grace. read more

This place could be amazing...but it's not. The food was pretty good and I liked their cheese enchiladas which are subpar in so many area restaurants. But the customer service is severely lacking. We gave it three tries and all three times we left being disappointed. Slow, unfriendly service all three times and we got drink refills only when we asked. What did us in though was when we got charged extra for the salsa. Salsa is a big part of why we go to Mexican restaurants. This is the first time I had ever been charged for salsa in any of the many, many Mexican restaurants I have visited across the country. It's not like we were just eating salsa. We had ordered food and ate salsa while waited. Nobody likes a dry, sauceless taco but we were told we had to pay for the salsa to go on them because we had already had one salsa refill...which we were charged for although we weren't told in advance. So by charging for a salsa refill we crossed this one off our list of options for our twice weekly Mexican restaurant visit. By making us pay their silly upcharge for something that is free other places they lost out on what will equate to thousands of dollars over time. read more

Exploring the flavors which El Agave had to offer in the Tacos Carnie Asada, Taquitos Mexicanos, and Carnitas. Yes, only three dishes, as Carnitas dish was selected twice in two visits as the seasoning, and flavors were so tastefully fulfilling. Being from California, we were very excited to learn about the new Mexican restaurant here in Bristow. The salsa was the best we have had here in virginIa (and we have tried a lot)! Ordered take out last night for the chimichangas....and I never thought anyone could mess up Mexican food until I had El Agave. The refried beans weren't refried, but instead some kind of soupy bean-idk what to call it. No rice...I mean how is there no rice. There was a cheese sauce slapped on it and that was not good. I asked for no sauce on the food and requested some red sauce on the side, didn't get it. Also, what's with the slice of tomato? No pico? The chicken had no flavor, tinga isn't hard to do-maybe throw some spices, chilies, or cheese in there. Idk do something. Positives: -Came with guacamole -The amount of chicken was good -Came with chips and salsa -Salsa wasn't great, too much tomato sauce, BUT it did have some fresh ingredients I get times are tough but this was bad. Charge a couple more dollars and change some things up. Guacamole and extra filling can be extra, omit the cheese sauce, and for the love of God add a scoop of rice. read more

So my friends in Haymarket wanted Mexican, we drive to Uncle Julio's in Gainesville at 6:30 on a Saturday and the parking lot is really full and the wait is 90 minutes. Aw hell no. Was not waiting to eat at 8 pm when am hungry at 6:30. Thank God for Yelp! So this is listed and a few minutes away, it had great reviews. We pull up at about 6:45 and we get a table then and there. We are right by the door and that was okay because we were hungry but we did get blasts of cold air. I had to use the lavatory this is where am deducting a full star, one ladies room and one men's. The female occupying the sole ladies room would not get out. Meanwhile men's room is open during this 20 minute wait for the inconsiderate chick to get out. If you are going to offer 2 bathrooms make gender nuetral. I actually go back to my seat until the chick gets out. A big gripe, especially if you serve booze...On to the food. One reviewer says queso is great and IT IS. Three of us go through 3 orders if it. Salsa is nice and garlicky. Not overwhelmed with too much cilantro (sorry not a fan). Practically eat myself into a coma with chips. I ordered the plate of 3 varied enchiladas. Food did not disappoint, all of us scarfed down what room we had left in our stomachs. 2 of us ordered enchiladas and we're damn happy. I forget what my other friend ordered but she was digging in with no stopping. When am out there in exurbia, am coming here instead of Uncle Julio's. Service was fine, food came quick enough, and that queso may be the best in the area. Less noisy than Uncle Julio's. There is not much in that group of retail, this place may get wait lines as more moves in. Parking could be better but what we ate was great. I paid for 3, with a 20% tip I spent 72 bucks.
