I went last week in the afternoon and this is now one of my favourite places in Manassas. The decor is hand painted and there is soft music playing as you eat. Got a torta today, super small for $13 no lettuce no jalapeño no avocado, no beans, no mayo, no tomato, just straight meat, bread, cheese and disappointment. The cheese was good and meat has good flavor if I still have anything nice to say. I'm so sad I wasted my money and time. Still super nice and clean inside but that's it. $4 for a taco should be a sin. From looking at everyone's plates, everything looks skimp. My husband has tried almost all of the tacos and just keeps going "no, this one is the best". But the cream de la cream is the shrimp ceviche tostada. El Rulas Tacos is a small hole in the wall shop that is easy to pass by, but there Barbacoa tacos dorados is simply divine. The taco is folded on the flattop and then simmered with its juices. The end result comes out as it is implied (dorado) golden with a crispy exterior and a juicy interior. The staff is very friendly and bring food and house salsa to the table. Although I've tried their chorizo, chicken, and carne asada tacos they do come out tad bit dry. "El Rulas" makes some of the best Mexican food on the entire east coast of Los Estados Unidos. It's cheap fare, in that it's cheap, and it's fair to expect it to blow your mind. And your head off, if you use the hottest salsa. What to get: A Torta - they are heaven - I think the Pierna is "the one" What else: The tacos and salsas rock Anything else: This is where they filmed the opening scenes of "Rulas Of The Lost Ark." How to improve: You have some of the best tortas in the country. Advertise them! Spread the word! Your tacos are good but that Pierna Torta needs to be tasted by everyone. Make a bunch of them each day, cut them into quarters, and hand them out to any customer who hasn't tried one before. That's one way to really get the word out about how good it is. Indeed, this is easily one of the best Mexican places I've been to in a long time. The torta in particular is one of the best I've had. There are some pretty amazing ones down in Houston and in Southern Cali, but this is up there with them. They really know how to make a Mexican sandwich. I have to do a massive shout-out to the extremely attractive girl who was working here. She seemed aloof and too cool to be working here, but she recommended to us one of the greatest Tortas I've ever had, and also made my cousin fall in love with her in the space of about 90 seconds (which is usually how long he lasts anyway honestly not that I know this from personal experience). I can't remember exactly which Torta it was she forced me at gunpoint to get, but she was right. I think it was the Pierna, and it looks like it from the pix. I'm sure they're all great, as are the salsas. You wouldn't think Manassas would have some of the best Mexican on the East Coast, and easily the best in the DMV, but ay caramba, it does. Tears of joy fill my eyes to have discovered this place. We're not from the immediate area but decided to make the drive after hearing rave reviews from a friend... and let me tell you, these tacos transport you to Mexico City! Upon entering, the place looks like a fixed up hole in the wall, nice decorative booths against the wall, and a couple of tables in the center. The place is small so there's a huge possibility you won't get seating if you're dining in as seating is first come, first served. To place your order you must go straight to the cashier, who gives you a table number, and the food is later brought to your table. Fast service, I must add! The menu has many options - tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, and drinks.... and the prices are unbelievable for the area (considering there's other VA taco spots that sell tacos close to $3). My hubby went for a burrito and 2 tacos, and I had 3 tacos. Our meat choice stayed classic as it was our first time there: carne asada and chicken. Everything was so delicious; the chicken was a little on the bland side but the salsas truly improved it! Salsas vary from mild to super hot, which made my Mexican husband jump for joy! El Rula = the hunting knife This is a very cool restaurant just for the ornate furniture and wall art. Someone really went to lengths to make this place feel different. I had a couple of tacos, the chorizo and barbacoa....unfortunately they only have the corn tortillas and not flour. They were OK and the price was $1.70 each so not too bad. The quality was just OK I liked the chorizo better than the beef bbq and it was bigger for some reason. The waitress said that only the quesadillas were flour. They have a bar area and you can watch them cook on the grill while you eat. There are several large HD's all tuned to different soccer games. I think the owners are from Guadalajara Mexico so it's tex mex style. The also have a variety of subs they call lonches. They have fish & shrimp tostadas so I'll look forward to checking those out. I came to VA for a training and had established in my training that I am a Yelper. So when lunchtime came around, my colleagues asked me where we should go. I looked on Yelp and found El Rulas Tacos. All 7 of us are glad that we tried this gem! One of our instructors who lunched with us remarked how he had worked at the office for 10 yrs and never knew El Rulas Tacos existed. I ordered a tripe taco, a tongue taco, and a horchata. My measurement for seeing how good a taco place is is to try their tongue taco because tongue is temperamental to cook. My tongue taco I had was cooked perfectly and the tongue was well seasoned and so tender. I was also pleased with my tripe taco and horchata, but the tongue taco is definitely something to rave about. They have 4 fresh sauces to add to your taco, torta, or burrito, which are all delicious! The staff is nice and the food came out really quick. read more

Just happened to find this little gem on my way to an event. The prices are unusually cheap ($1.80/taco, $6.95 for a quesadilla) while still maintaining high quality and authentic ethnic food. I opted for the bistecca quesadilla and it was delicious.
