I have had little exposure to Honduran food in the past so I was excited to try this place. You know that you are in the right place for ethnic food when you walk in and you are the only "gringo" in the place. At the recommendation of the waiter I tried the "Pollo with Tajadas"; fried chicken served with fried green plantain slices, cabbage, homemade sauce & dressing topped with pickled onions & shredded cheese. I also ordered a side order of yucca fries. Overall, the food was absolutely delicious. The fried chicken was some of the best that I've ever had, but I'm from up north, so what do I know. The yucca, the sauces, and the pickled vegetable were excellent. I didn't love the plantains as they seemed slightly rubbery or stale. Again, I'm no Honduran food expert. Maybe they are supposed to be that way. Anyways they didn't take too much away from the food. As I was eating I noticed that there were at least four other tables that had ordered the same dish, and like I said I was the only "gringo" there, so I feel like the waiter steered me right. The restaurant is relatively small, but bright and very clean. The service was excellent and fast. Th servings were ample and I found it to be very reasonably priced. This was a terrific find. We wanted some lunch for our group so we opted for this place since it seemed more unique from the other options we saw in the area. They had a variety of options including pupusas, tacos, quesadillas & some traditional Honduran dishes. I tried a fried shrimp dish that came with a salad, plantains, etc and it was good! Waiters are nice, ordered 2 orders of tacos dorados and a baliada. The original tacos dorados (honduran style) are made with homemade tortillas not store bought which was a disappointment but on the other hand the tacos were a bit small but filled with chicken and flavorful. For the price they are worth it. The baliada however was a disappointment. The flour was not fresh it was definitely old and they burned it too. When flour is fresh baliada flour is white, when it is old it turns a rubbery consistency and a darker color. read more

Had lunch here with a coworker and he had been on a Honduran food kick. I'm from out of town but I always like to support local small owned family businesses. They come out with chips and salsa, and later with a more spicy one that you can't stop eating even though your taste buds are screaming at you to stop. I ordered my favorite. Al pastor tacos lunch portion (2) with rice and refried beans. Great portions in the taco. Flavorful, and hard to stop eating once you dig in because it would be difficult to pick back up. We also tried a couple pupusas, one with just cheese and one with pork and cheese. It's like a filled hoe cake (corn cake) flat like a pancake. Really tasty! We were in and out quickly, service was so good and I was happy. Our meal was a couple weeks ago and I'm still thinking about the next time I'll be in town to get more of this good food! I have been to El Aguila three times now. Each & every time, I have been met with the best customer service EVER. Even when they are busy, there is never a feeling of being rushed. My water never ran out & each & every little details was always attained to. We were checked in on, but not in an annoying way. Ray, specifically, goes above & beyond with all things. We truly felt taken care of & it was clear that there is lots of effort behind his work. Don't even get me started on the food!! (the plantains with guacamole are definitely a must try. can't wait to have it again, 10/10) The Taco Hondurianos were delicious, we were originally enticed because of the col slaw & the whole dish ended up being amazing. The sauce topped it off so well & was not too thick which we appreciated. The atmosphere is nice too & always looks clean. Speaking of clean, the bathrooms are always super clean as well! Wowza I absolutely love this place! Definitely worth the drive if you don't live near here. Bonus points the service is quick! The papusas are corn flour based, so they are a little denser than the rice flour if you are accustomed to fluffier style. I thought they were perfect disks of pan fried cheesy goodness. I also ordered the guacamole and the steak baleada both were heavenly! I am absolutely ordering the steak baleada again the steak was tender and the seasoning was perfect. 10/10 would recommend I will be eating here again. read more

The food was good. We had empanadas for an appetizer and enjoyed them. For entrees we had steak fajitas and pupusas. The fajita meat was tender and well seasoned and the veggies were cooked just right. The pupusas were delicious. We ordered some cheese dip it was too runny and that was a slight disappointment. They service was great for the entire meal but after we were done eating it took quite a while to be approached. We asked for to-go containers and the check. It was fantastic, do recommend someone well versed in Spanish due to the nature of the restaurant, however that does not take away from the amazing food! I had the Whole Tilapia (beware bones and all) with plantain chips and rice on the side and an Ice cold Horchata. It was great and the prices are more than reasonable. Went for the first time tonight and I will be back. Sampled several dishes from the menu and also checked out some other folks that were sitting a socially distanced ways away. For starters we had the homemade guacamole. It was freshly made full of lime and cilantro. It was served with tostones (squashed disks of fried plantain) and they we a perfect complement to the acidity of the guacamole. We also had their empanadas which were served with a pickled slaw and some sauce which enhanced the beefy flavor of the filling. They were nicely presented on the plate. Next up we had the papusas. A potato cake filled with meat beans and cheese with more pickled slaw and a sauce on the side. By themselves they lacked any real substantial flavor however when they were put together they played off each other really well. I also got a taco al pastor which was traditional as it gets but came with a mildly hot sauce that really pushed the dish to another level. The entrees we got were a fried chicken dish that literally was a quarter of fried chicken in some slaw, pickled onions, and some sauce. The chicken crust was a golden brown and had a unique spice blend in it. The dish came with a side of fried green plantains that were drizzled with a creamy mayonnaise based sauce. The other dish we had was a carne asade dish that was delicious. At first it looked like the shoe leather steak you get at many Mexican restaurants but it had been marinated and grilled where every bite was smoky and seasoned to perfection. The steak was topped with pico de Gallo, pickled onions and served with a side of green plantains fried and drizzled with the Mayo creamy sauce. Over all the presentation of the dishes and the blending of flavors was what caught our attention tonight. For the price tag, I was expecting a budget presentation where food is just brought out bare bones on a plate. However, the plates were composed and the flavors complemented each other. Good food, good price, and a good time was had by all. Definitely stop by there and make this South Asheville eatery successful. read more
