The aesthetic is a typical American Mexican restaurant aesthetic, very clean and lots of tables and booths. There's a fairly recently added extra room with a nicely lit bar as well. The prices and portions are excellent for this area - as are the beer prices. The staff is always very friendly and efficient - you. NEVER have to wait more than a few minutes at max (even on crazy busy days like Cinco De Mayo). My wife always gets the shredded chicken chimichangas, she can't imagine eating chimichangas anywhere else. I usually get the Mexican style tacos, and they offer a slightly deep fried jalapeño for adding to your dish (highly recommended). We eat here at least once a week, you will enjoy it! read more

The employees were nice. I liked the environment and ambience. But the food was mid. The salsa was really spicy, and the chips don't really taste quite right. The queso was good, at least. The people I ate with said that the sauce carne con chile was good. But be prepared if you get a quesadilla, because they really put the quesa in quesadilla. In conclusion, I would probably not eat here again, simply because La Carreta is nearby and a lot better. But in the event La Carreta is closed or full, this is a nice alternative. read more

I walked in to order take out and was immediately greeted with kindness. I'm from the piedmont, and took a chance on this place. Ordering was easy and the employees were fantastic! I sat at the bar and ordered a margarita that was phenomenal and needed after a few tough days of volunteering at a nursing home in AVL that is affected by the hurricane. At every Mexican restaurant We always get Fajitas for 2 and finish it because they aren't always very big portions but here it was massive! We did not finish it! Stopped in here for lunch when visiting Asheville, NC December of 21'. Best chimichangas I have ever had. Ordered a Dos Equis on tap, and was offered 22 ounce pours. Hard to beat that. We eat here frequently and the food is always very good. We love the Chicken Chimichangas - always delicious. This time I had the chicken enchiladas and requested a cheese enchilada be substituted for one of the chicken - not much flavor for the cheese one - just some cheese inside a tortilla, so I really don't recommend it, unless you're looking for a cheese sandwich. The service is quick, chips and salsa arrive almost the minute you are seated, and they are quick with drink orders. Food arrives fast and hot. We came here on a weekday around tied comic it wasn't too busy, the as we were leaving it was beginning to fill up. We got the steak burrito, and a ground beef chimichanga. I love my chimichanga! It reminded me of a Mexican restaurant I used to eat at home and Kansas. However, havingLived in California for the past 20 years and my husband who had lived there his whole life, we got used to different Mexican food. This was good and it was more Americanized than what we are used to. If you like chimichangas it was wonderful. My husband's burrito yummy. The Chile Verde sauce on top was delicious! He was super glad that he chose that burrito. We always love chips and salsa. I thought this salsa was OK my husband did not like it. And it is always nice to have a salsa bar to try different types of homemade salsa's. read more

This is definitely one of those places that the term " looks can be deceiving " was made for, El Chapala Mexican Restaurant does not stand out like a lot of Mexican restaurants that I have seen but the food and experience are above any I have had in Asheville. I love Mexican food so I ordered take out and asked the person who took my order for an idea on something to try, the La Flavoita was exceptional so the next week my son and me went to have dinner there and the staff went above and beyond what we expected, food was exceptional again. The salsa is alright, typical tomato based salsa with a little bit of heat from the jalapeños. Our waitress kept our drinks refilled and brought napkins and got our orders right. My main complain is the food, we ordered 2 DINNER mixed fajitas. The portions were tiny, like I had to search for the meat because they're itty bitty tiny pieces. I left the place still hungry, we paid $40 including the tips but it was definitely not worth it!!! I could've gotten 4 meals from zaxbys and be satisfied. Wow! As travelers we eat along the road a lot, and this place is outstanding in price, portion, and flavor. As a Californian, I can easily say this truly is authentic Mexican food. Ok- I wanted to like this place. I really did but if you can't do Salsa right in a Mexican restaurant then I just can't like ya. The salsa tasted like it came out of a can with absolutely no flavor at all. Seriously how hard can it be to add a pinch of cilantro, onion, and a little lime? The guacamole did not taste fresh either. Again, simple and fresh goes a long way in a restaurant town like Asheville. Our server was less than pleasant. Positives? Cold Negro Modelo and the chicken was nicely grilled. There are several really good Mexican places in town so why settle for one that's not good with less than stellar service. read more

Went to El chapala and sat at the bar. Food was great. We watched them pour all the drinks with a very minimal amount of alcohol. Doesn't matter what size you get it is all less than a shot of tequila for margaritas. I got a 27oz and watched the bartender pour half a shot. read more
