A "Bat Signal" was sent to me about another Ladies who Luncheon aka Dames who Dine, Sunday afternoon brunch/lunch. The only and main requirement is that it definitely had Gluten Free (GF) options. I personally have other health issues, but Gluten, lactose or vegan isn't on my radar. So, I myself had to ask for suggestions. The name Juanchos Fonda was highly recommended and designated GF Colombian restaurant. I had heard for several years that this little "hole in the wall/strip mall restaurant" was a hidden gem. Looking at the menu on Google/Facebook just didn't appeal to me UNTIL now. Juanchos Fonda is located at 2619 Sweeten Creek Road #10, Asheville. Several of the party made comments to the effect do you know how many times I have driven by and never knew that there was a restaurant inside or I have seen the sign, but never considered trying it. I arrived quite early to introduce myself, and confirmed that a large group was coming. Jayson introduced himself and a little birdie had already spoken with him the night before. He and his staff were preparing our tables so Ellie and I took a quick stroll down the walkway to visit Retro Coffee Shop and owner Carrie. Retro Coffee has a variety of options for coffees, teas and desserts/pastries The pastries are by @Jaz Bakes. Carrie continues to help those that might need a little something to tide them over, her very small food pantry is available. Carrie always welcomes any contributions for the pantry. I love their Chai Tea and The Mafia coffee named by the Asheville Food Mafia as our favorite flavor of five other options. We returned to Juanchos and the table was in the final finishing touches. Within minutes the entire 16 were making conversation, welcoming hugs and meeting new friends. The owner Jayson introduced himself, his restaurant's concept, the menu, his special of the day, and large party gratuity. Our server, Cesar, was taking cocktail orders and Jayson informed the table of the special in-house Sangria. Several people enjoyed the pitcher of Sangria (hopefully someone can add that photo). The restaurant has a full bar for a wide variety of cocktails. Several people order different cocktails; Bloody Mary, Mojito, Mango Madness and a few others that I didn't hear those names. I was having a difficult time trying to decide what I wanted to try (everything Jayson mentioned) but after hearing his description of the menu I decided upon Picada Manera it's like what I would consider a Pu Pu Platter. The dish included; whole Red Snapper, octopus, lobster tail, shrimp, fried mahi, yuca, tostones, sweet plantain, fries, chimichurri, tartara, and guacamole. Growing up my dad ALWAYS had baked halibut steaks. I absolutely hated that because of trying to get the flesh without swallowing a fish bone. Well some few years later, ahum, what do I order a platter with a Red Snapper with bones. The first bite was the most delicious, decadent, well seasoned fish that I have ever tasted. Who cares if I have to eat tiny bites! The flesh comes away from the bones and I couldn't stop, but there was so much more to try. The octopus could have been cut with a spoon no knife needed. It melted like butter when being eaten. I have had some rubbery octopus and squid in my lifetime, but definitely NOTHING this tender EVER. I shared a few SMALL morsels with the others, because I knew I couldn't eat the entire meal by myself. The lobster tail and shrimp was equally as tender and you could actually taste the meat, not just the marinade/seasoning. I did try a bite of everything else when it was still fresh and hot. The remaining will be consumed tomorrow for lunch. read more

Absolutely stunning, a tier above everything in like a ten mile radius. This takes delicious Colombia classics and elevates them with fresh ingredients and flair. The food is *excellent*, the starters are great, the cocktails are delicious, we haven't had one dud on any menu item. The only complaint is the location, and *maybe* some of the servers don't have so much English, but in a place like this, that's charm and it's never been a problem. The host is helpful and energetic, the interior is charming and interesting. If this was in Asheville, or Biltmore Square, it would be going gangbusters. Oh man. I have been missing out. I love me a Colombian restaurant. The combo of meat, rice, beans, empanadas and chimichurri sauce is always a nice plate. Juancho has super friendly staff and exciting flame filled kitchen plus all the Colombian dishes you crave. Plus fried rices, soups and a lonon saltado. We got this epic "appetizer" plate piled with fried meats and starches and garlic tomatoes. Circle up on that with some beers and you have a party. The seafood coconut soup was decadent. Plus a bunch of vegan items. Smart for such a meat heavy spot to have some offerings for your vegan loved ones. I will be back. read more

Jaunchos Fonda is an authentic Colombian restaurant in South Asheville. It is located in an unassuming shopping center and is easy to miss. Do not let the location deter you! The atmosphere inside is pleasant, cozy and fun. The staff is attentive and involved in the entire dining process. The gentlemen who cared for our party were patient, happy to answer questions about the menu and gave wonderful recommendations. Everything is made fresh to order, so this is not a quick dining experience. Rather, it's a place to come and sit for awhile to chat, sip drinks and take it easy. The menu has many options, and if you aren't sure what something is, just ask! My husband and I had different responses to what we ate, that's why I gave a 4 star rating for food. I loved my smokey chicken, the slaw and the plantains. My husband is a meat and potatoes kind of man, so he didn't care for the sides, but he did enjoy his steak. Best mojito I've had in a long time. French fries were excellent. Service was super-friendly and efficient. The simple decor with all the hats was a nice touch. However, our party of four were a little up in the air about the food. I thought my whole fried yellowtail snapper was excellent. Some of the other mains didn't have the flavors we usually expect and love in Latin American food. Maybe we just don't understand the nuances of Colombian food. And we thought $55 a head (including tip and tax and one drink or a mocktail each) - with entrés and the sampler plate in the high $20s - was a little steep for this casual place. I try to support small business as often as I can (having owned one for 20+ years). I was truly excited to visit this restaurant However, Juancho's was a huge and expensive disappointment - perhaps the kitchen was understaffed but the food was mediocre at best. I ordered the skirt steak which was overcooked and dry - a no point I was asked how I wanted it cooked. The side dishes were fries (nothing special) and 2 plantains the size of my thumb. Coleslaw was also served - not a Colombian side dish I asked for a serving of rice, knowing full well that it would be additional. Appx 1/2 cup of rice was $4 That and 1 beer =$44 + tip To the owner: I know you will be unhappy with my review -I have read your responses to negative reviews.. it's your option but look at this as an opportunity to create a more authentic meal, after all Colombian food served with soul is just delicious read more

What a great experience! It was a busy dining room when I floated in but the host made room for me at the bar. I had a delightful slightly dirty martini but was also drawn to all the other drinks that were being made by the owner, Jeison. He was busy. So busy! But, he didn't miss a beat while concocting his beverages (pouring, mashing, mixing, shaking, pouring....... you get it!) and explaining the menu to me. And there is a lot to review on that menu. I loved my Bandeja Paisa and will return for the Lechon Al Horno. A side salad came with my meal and tho to Jeison it was probably simple enough to make, it was one of the tastiest salads I've eaten. Our server Christian was an absolute gem--attentive, friendly, and always one step ahead of our cravings. And Jason, the owner? A legend. Massive portions, bold flavors, and cooked so fresh you'd swear someone's abuela was in the kitchen yelling "¡con más sazón!" Maybe our party was just there on a bad day. 5 for the server (she was attentive despite full house & slow kitchen) & the "cabbage salad" side dish. 4= arepas, guacamole. 3= steak & pork both had good flavor but were dry. 2=chicken & tostones each were tough. Bartender was fast, seemed maybe to be the manager, some drinks he made well, some were bad on ratios. Appetizer round was tasty, but served at same time as entrees, after waiting 30-40 minutes for any food at all. Wish management would bring at least complimentary fries during a long foodless wait for a sizable price tag on our table's total order. Overall, I'd say try Juancho's, but go when it's least busy and hopefully kitchen is best staffed. read more

The entrees are around $20-$30 ,but portions are very generous and like I said , made fresh . Service was on point. The ambiance is cosy.
