Just stopped for chips and salsa for a party today. The place is completely decorated with colors and Mexican references everywhere! The chips salsa and queso were great. The chips were hot and crispy! E have eaten here many times in the past and the service and food was always really good! It is located in a part of town where we don't go often. The girl that took care of me at the counter was very friendly and got my chips quickly. The restaurant wasn't busy but it was soon after open so I'm sure the crowds are coming. Came here for dinner with my husband. Immediately seated. Entire restaurant was spotless. No dust or dirt anywhere. Washrooms were extremely clean. We had chips and salsa in less than a minute. Salsa wasn't hot, not overly salty , and tortilla chips were fresh- crispy. Not corn thick or greasy. Waiter was extremely attentive and made a recommendation that was outstanding. Trying to watch carbs and not do tacos and wanted pork or steak with no tortillas. He recommended something better. The pork was so tender. Tons of great flavor. Huge portion- check the pic. An extensive food menu greats you and the bar menu is also extensive. We enjoyed the daily margaritas special and food choices were a combo chili relleno with burrito and the Colorado beef - both were very good and we had left overs to take back. Had a great first visit. The service was nice, and the decor was great. I ordered the seafood chimichanga. I enjoyed my meal, but I was not a fan of the abundance of carrots and broccoli that is added. I felt like those items were used as fillers, and it took away from the "seafood" I was after. Also, it comes with crab meat.. I wish restaurants would detail their imitation crab meat.. That's a BIG difference to me. The verse sauce is DELICIOUS! Next visit, I won't order anything seafood-based(imitation crab), or anything saying carrots and broccoli. When I worked on the Southside El Azabache was a weekly, if not bi-weekly, lunch spot. El Azabache and Pho 31 were my weekly staples. I haven't been here in years and wasn't even sure it was still open. Nice to see they were still there and opened when I pulled up. When you enter you'll see a beautiful two tier water fountain in the center of the lobby. A server will seat you in one of the four dining areas. The decor is extremely colorful with Mexican village scenery on each booth back. They offer several types of Margarita's and flavors. You can order a 13 1/2 ozs., 20 oz. Medium, 28 oz. Jumbo, 48 oz Monster and a 60 oz. Pitcher. We all love the margaritas regardless of the type. The menu offers a nice selection of Nacho dishes large enough for a meal or to share. We polished off the chicken nachos fairly quickly. Today I ordered the Caldo De Camaron Soup. The spice was apparent but not overly spicy and made with spicy shrimp, rice, pico de gallo and fresh avocado slices. Love the soup. Vegetarians have 6 combo plates to select from and a children's menu is available. El Azabache has a large lunch menu with options from fajitas, burritos, enchildas, quesadillas, Huevos dishes, Chimichangas and tacos. Today I ordered one of the new lunch specials, Polo Azabache with strips of marinated chicken breast cooked in their scrumptious hot sauce. Served with rice and 3 tortillas for $7.99. The large portion of very spicy and tender chicken strips were small enough strips to fit nicely in a tortilla. The lunch portion of rice and beans are about half what you receive for dinner. The rice was fluffy and the beans were creamy topped with cheese. The Shrimp Fajitas are tasty and consists of shrimp, crab meat, Tilipa, scallops, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Served with lettuce, guacomole, rice or beans, and choice of corn or flour tortillas. If your not into the red sauce then substitute cheese sauce for red sauce for $1.00 extra. The server was friendly and very prompt to our table. We did have a couple drink and menu questions he couldn't answer. He immediately turned to ask the bartender and answered our questions. Bonus points for finding answers to our questions. I still enjoy dining here with the old work group. Love the great service, the large menu variety and great margaritas. read more

Meh...typical Mexican restaurant. I wasn't blown away by the food, but it is very simple American-Mexican dishes. The chips and guacamole are delish! The guacamole is made fresh and had a great flavor with very fresh vegetables. The food was just okay. I had a mushroom quesadilla and you could tell the mushrooms came from a can. This is our go to Mexican restaurant. It is always clean, the servers are nice, and the food is always fresh. I am most impressed with the vegetarian offerings. My favorite dish is the Vegetarian Fajita Quesadilla. We saw a movie at the AMC right there and wanted a quick spot to go after and I am glad we checked out this place. The decor looked like any other Mexican restaurant. It really reminded me of the place near me in Carmel, but they are not connected. But the food was equally as good! Everyone went with some kind of chimichanga, but me. They all seemed to enjoy their choices. I went with the grilled garlic shrimp. It came with a bed of grilled onions and I got the black beans instead of rice. I like it came with guac and fresh tomatoes and lettuce so I could make my own wraps with the tortillas. The kid were happy with the chicken fingers and fries. We were there a few hours in the end, but no one rushed us and they weren't very busy. Our waitress kept up with refills and I'd go back when we are down that way. Marvel at this drink menu. I ordered a medium marg because it was before noon...and you have to take it easy sometimes. It was utterly huge. 20 oz of margarita goodness for about $5. I can't even handle it. El Azabache has a really great and wide selection of food for all sorts. Taco salads and American-ish food for people who don't realize they are at a Mexican restaurant. Vegetarian options abound. I will never make the mistake of creating my own plate of chile rellenos and ordering two because it was far too much food after pounding a large margarita. The food can often be bland, soupy, and generally lame. It's hit or miss on the food, but the drinks are so fantastic. I'm torn. Very good salsa! Tomato, onion and a wee bit of cilantro served with golden tortilla chips upon being sat. The bean and cheese dip is 25% creamy pinto beans and 75% smooth white cheese served hot. It was great to nosh on as I waited for my two al a cart tacos; one ground beef and one chicken. Two filled me up with a nice mix of shredded white cheese and iceberg lettuce. El Azabache is great for "authentic" Mexican food on the South side. It's nothing too different from any other Mexican restaurant nearby - typical menu items and bright, cheesy decor. I started going here because I went to UIndy and it's the closest Mexican place, but now I usually choose El Azabache because it is easy stop in before seeing a movie at the nearby Kerasotes Showplace 16. I recommend trying a pitcher of margaritas here. Of course, the usual Mexican fare is available - fajitas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas. The shrimp fajitas and quesadillas are both good, but I always go for the Pollo con Arroz (Chicken with Rice). Cheese is my #1 food group, and this dish is smothered in the queso sauce, so it's not a difficult choice to make. read more

Going to a Mexican restaurant with your Mexican best friend is seriously a struggle. The first time I went it was a "Moms night out" type of night. So we wanted to get great food and great drinks before going to a Hookah bar. Going back with how I mentioned one of my best friends on this night is Mexican, I was afraid she wouldn't like anything on menu. However! She actually liked it. It wasn't our favorite but our favorite restaurant closed a year ago. For the price it was actually worth it because of the portions. I only spent $10, and I was stuffed afterwards. I noticed it could be easy to spend a lot here though if you purchased a bigger fish styled meal, or if you ordered drinks. I'm a huge fan of chimichangas even though it's a southwestern Americanized dish. It was very delicious and it came with a side of rice, guac, lettuce and tomato. The guac wasn't spicy here. That happened to me once at a different restaurant, I thought I was going to choke. Guac is suppose to be mild and chunky. Not fire down my throat. I've had my fair share of rice water in my day. I've even had rice water from my friends madre so I'm slightly biased. There's was a little grainy from the cinnamon but overall I'd still recommend it for the taste. And the salsa... Oh. My. Goodness! I've never had salsa like this IN a restaurant. Usually I have to home make or buy salsa like this from a deli. It was flavorful, both chunky and liquified with so many flavors. It wasn't about how much heat they could use, it was genuinely delicious! I'll definitely be returning here with a similar budget and still get a full tummy. read more

I had driven by this place a thousand times. It took a major craving for Mexican food and a quick check on yelp to get me in the door. And, am I glad we did! They start with the standard of chips and salsa. I definitely approve of their version. My husband swears by the Burrito de Carne Asada. I have tried a few different items and have not been disappointed. Their enchiladas fixed that initial craving for sure. If there is one thing I'm not in food love with, it's the guacamole. It's less chunky than I prefer. But, that's a personal preference. The staff are friendly and efficient. I have never had anything but a very pleasant experience here. As always mexican food is delish. This place is nothing out of the ordinary for Mexican but still pretty darn good. I got the jumbo house marg and the shrimp taco salad and loved it all. Our waiter was attentive and kept water glasses full. The decor is colorful and fun and they even have a little fountain thing inside which I thought was cute!! This is probably one of my favorite restaurants, if not at the top of my list. I consider it a hidden gem on the southside of Indy, so posting this came with some hesitation. The restaurant itself is kind of your standard Mexican restaurant, as far as decor goes. Low lighting, music in the background, TV's playing ESPN in every dining section. That's pretty much a given. There is a really cool fountain in the main lobby, though. The service here has always been A+. I've only had one experience where my food wasn't made correctly, and there seemed to be a bit of a language barrier, but it was quickly corrected, even with a smile! The servers here are excellent. The food is also leagues better than other Mexican restaurants I've had. They keep the chips and salsa coming. The chips are salt-less (which I prefer) and the salsa has a kick to it, but in a good way. The queso is also very good! You have to pay extra for that, but you get a good sized portion for the price. I highly recommend their Arroz con pollo, taco salads, shrimp quesadilla, or fajita nachos. I only had drinks here once. They were made well, not too strong, and moderately priced. Pretty typical. This place has won me over with its consistent good service and delicious food. I go here because the service is fast and its right next to the movie theater. The food is okay and is similar to other Mexican restaurant in the area. The prices are higher than some of the others. The ala carte tacos are the ones that stood out. We are talking about a dollar here or there not a enough of a difference not to come here. As far as the taste goes I have no complaints at all. The margarita being able to get by the pitcher is very nice. The chips and salsa is always a crgreat start. My wife really likes the cheese and bean dip. I think it's good. I seem to always get the their house special burrito. Its filled with shrimp, chicken and steak. It is covered in cheese sauce and green sauce. I comes with a side of rice and usually I'm full when I leave. I will say it was less greasy and the steak was less fatty compared to the same burrito at other places inn the area.
