Very, very good. It toes the line between Mexican and Americanized Mexican very well. I wish they would either have the pickles veggies or white queso dip available. East coast Mexican American always has queso and west coast usually doesn't have queso but does have the pickled carrots and peppers...I couldn't give the place five stars when it offers neither of my favorite little things! read more

Stopped by on our way from Redwoods and our airbnb host recommended this place. We were tired and starving. I walked in and the lady asked if I had rsvp I said no so she goes it's ok. Mind you the place was empty but it was so fresh in there. So hot outside. We sat down and right away she brought over chips, pico and salsa and I must say that was my favorite. We had burritos and enchiladas and they were meh. I loved their rice, so fresh. My friend didn't finish her HUGE burrito. But I can tell locals go there and they love it. Mostly seniors too. I ordered the Chicken Fajitas. I remember it being about $10.00 maybe. I expected typical fajitas where the peppers, onions and meat are served pipping hot on a skillet with tortillas on the side. What I got was a large soft tortilla, microwaved, with little meat and a huge amount of shredded lettuce. First I thought, "how do I eat this? with a knife and fork?" I decided to pick it up and most of it fell out. The tortilla was soft, mushy and started falling apart where my fingers held it. After dumping out the taco on my plate I pinched at the little amount of chicken/peppers and was done. The fajita was a lunch platter which came with salad. I ended up having a huge plate of salad and shredded lettuce left over. My wife ordered the two taco platter and asked for Carne Asada. She got crispy shell tacos with pieces of meat, LARGE amounts of shredded lettuce and shredded cheddar cheese. The rice and beans were bland, beans canned maybe. My sons bean burrito was HUGE and tasted like canned Rosarita brand re-fried beans. I really wanted to have them ask me "how was everything?" when dropping off the bill or when I went up to pay. They did not. I ended up paying roughly $40.00 for a sad depressing lunch. I ended up going to Super Taco near BigLots afterwards, spent $4.00 on two traditional carne asada tacos which looked and tasted most excellent. It was the only thing to correct my mistake of trying something new. Summary: This is bland American Southwestern food. It is not Mexican food. I used to live in Ukiah, and I remember this place as being pretty good...but today I went in for lunch and it was TERRIBLE! the chips they gave us were totally stale. Then I made the mistake of ordering nachos and not only were the chips stale, but they used canned cheese sauce mixed with a little cheddar cheese - if I wanted cheese sauce on my nachos I would have paid 1/4 of the price & gone to Taco Bell. The food was excellent, but have noticed the portion sizes are getting smaller. The service on the other hand not as good as I expected. Made a reservation in advance. Our order was taken quickly but had to wait more than 30 minutes for our food to be served. Even before some of the people in our party were finished eating their dinner we were told that they were sorry but they needed our table. I didn't notice anyone waiting for a table but we were gracious about it and hurried away from the table and left the restaurant. Time elapsed after being served our dinner was about 25 minutes. I was extremely disappointed because I had told the friends in our party how good the food was here and that they would really like it. This is no way to treat loyal patrons. I'll think twice before I recommend this restaurant again. I'm not sure I'll be back either. read more

Delicious food! These ppl know what they are doing! Portions are huge though so most plates can be shared. The casuelas are so delicious we ordered a small top shelf casuela for 3 ppl and it was perfect! The chips are authentic and the pico de gallo was fresh! They have outdoor dining and air conditioned inside dining room. Outside patio is small but the option is nice. They take reservations which is always nice. I recommend the Aztec pizza it is huge but so delicious! Definitely a platter to share...so much food. The only down side was the wait, the poor waitress was overwhelmed so we sat for two hours before we ate. We did have 12 of us but still it was quite a long wait and she had many other tables and made all our drinks herself. Would definitely go back just expect a wait. read more

Unlike other whiny reviewers, we showed up a little after 8pm (our rule is never ever show up to any establishment when they have less than an hour till closing), the gentleman who greeted us (sorry wish I had gotten his name) was a mid 20's maybe, hispanic, very handsome and personable waiter, who didn't rush us, didn't give us "the look" or any bad attitude whatsoever. The food was amazing- al though I am not easily impressed since I am a great cook myself. Everything was perfectly seasoned and at good temperature. I moved out of town almost 3 years ago...only 30 minutes away, but still a commute...I can honestly say that the thing I miss most frequently is El Azteca Mexican food. It's quite difficult for for me to find a reason to go anywhere else for lunch when I'm in the area. This is my first Yelp review. I love the El Azteca and it is the BEST place to eat in Ukiah. I ate there for over thirty-four years before leaving town and it is one of the things I miss the most about the town. Wonderful food, great service and people, full bar, and a really nice atmosphere. Very good for take out as well. Just pull up to the back door, come in settle your bill, and then wait in your car- they bring it out to you. Wonderful when you need to listen to a game. This was the most tasteless Mexican food I have ever had. I ordered the Chili Verde plate. It tasted like old pork covered with a sauce made with canned beef broth. I did not taste any tomatillos, no chilis and no cilantro. I ended up poring the entire cup of salsa on my plate to attempt to get some flavor. My husband had the enchilada, chili relleno plate. He took two bites of both the enchilada and chili relleno but then ended up eating just the rice and beans. The chips were hard and stale. The service was bad. We waited quite a while to get the menus then we received no refills on the coke or ice tea. We ended up spending $35 for this stuff when we could have spent under $10 for great tacos at Chavez Market down the street. read more

We usually eat in the restaurant, but every once in a while do a to go order. When you eat in the food is great-service a bit slow, the environment very noisy, but they are always busy! Not so with take out! Problems! The waitress always says "20 minutes," but even 30 minutes later it is not ready, & you still need to wait another 20-30 minutes!They often don't give you what you ordered! We have not once received a perfect take out order! Last time-1/25/2014-ordered a vegetable quesedea & got a dried up tortilla with unmelted cheese, with pico de gallo dumped over it. The Mexican rice was just plain rice. Very disappointed, especially given there are so few restaurants open on Sundays! read more

By far our favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Usually, very very busy on Friday and Saturday nights. I highly recommend their Mexican Pizza with grilled chicken. YUMMY!!! And HUGE! If you're looking for a great mixed drink, try the consuelo; definitely big enough for 2. The large can serve up to 4 people. It's a giant bowl of booze, with fun colored straws.
