7/19/17 11:35am- no change in stars from previous review. Called before walking over to make sure they were open this time. I don't recommend ordering the taco salad. First, the lady said their machine wasn't working to make the taco salad shell, so she substituted it with 6-10 pieces of chips. The chicken is shredded and taste was OK at best. There's a tiny dollop of guac, lightly shredded cheese, and NO sour cream. Also, I wondered why my plate was full of water and realized when I took a scoop of lettuce, I ate an ice chunk. Also, menu states the taco salad is $6.00, but she charged me $7.00 The taco salad at Senor Pepe in the Ala Moana food court ($9.75) is 10 times better. Side note- she gave us chips and salsa which were good. Also my co-workers had the burritos which they enjoyed. But based on my two experiences here, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND/RETURN. read more

Needed to get our taco fix for Taco Tuesday. I ordered a carne asada taco & some chips & salsa. When our order came, the taco is a good size...like a street taco, which o totally love. But when I grabbed the taco, the tortilla kind of fell apart. The steak didnt have much flavor to it. The chips & salsa was delicious though. Salsa had some heat to it, could be hotter though. They always say to try somewhere twice...we finally got around to trying again. And it came down to not reviewing the map before ordering. My expectations where very high based on the prior experience and I was wrong. We got the Chicken Taquito, Beef Enchiladas & Carne Asada. The Chicken Taquitos came with a sauce, sour cream and lettuce atop which took away from the crispiness of the shells. I would have preferred to have that on the side vs on top as I love the crispy shells. Beef Enchiladas came out good. Carne Asada was a great value and tasted delicious. It came with three good size pieces of carne asada and the seasoning was perfect. 100% different from the first time we went and I'd order from them again. I am from southern CA and eat Mexican food for about half my meals. When on the island I was craving a burrito after a long day of hiking so we searched out and thought we would try this place. I got the carne asada burrito plate. Let me tell you the stake inside the burrito was amazing. The beans and rice were also great. This place makes real Mexican food the way it should be. Oh boy... I'm all for hole in the wall places, but this place misses the mark. I was thrown a bit when I stepped in this place expecting it to be a take out place, but noticed it was a sit down restaurant. I sat down and noticed the menu was offering a lot of things. I was a bit overwhelmed. The items should be less for such a small place. I ordered a beef quesadilla and a chicken taco. It wasn't a combo meal. It ended up being more than I wanted to shell out for lunch. The size of the lunch was ok, but I did order two dishes. One dish would be too small. The quesadilla and taco both had a lot of meat, maybe too much. The meat didn't have much flavor. The taco needed more lettuce and cheese. The service was great. never been here tho i've passed by fairly often...well I got around to it today. it was mixed fare. staff was friendly & answered a couple of mundane questions that I had. decor was nice and after a short walk...the air-conditioning was soothing. i am curious with mexican eateries...had a brief relationship with a part-mexican gal some years back...especially now that i am eating out more frequently once again. for the record...i was a monterrey supporter when i followed liga mx...the top division in mexican soccer/futbol. ordered "the bethany"special for takeaway and, in truth, it was closer to average than special. chicken was somewhat bland and the rice was microwaved ( i think) but i did visit near closing. i dont have a discerning palate when it comes to mexican cuisine (or really any type of food)...so i think i'll have to visit again & order something else to get a better gauge read more

This was potentially the worst Mexican food I've eaten in my life. Being that I don't eat Mexican on a regular basis, this may not be much a statement. But either all the Mexican food I've eaten has been excellent and this is average, or this place is significantly worse than any other Mexican food I've had. I ordered the Carne Asada burrito. It came with rice and beans. I also ordered chips and salsa with it. When it came, I thought the salsa was a tomato puree. I was correct. I have made salsa a total of one time and I am confident I can make better salsa than this proclaimed Mexican establishment. As far as the meal goes, the burrito was /serviceable/, at best. The food lacked flavor. I ordered the carnitas tacos, which were extremely bland. The carnitas did not taste seasoned at all and there was no cilantro, onion, etc. to make up for the lack of flavor. The jalapeños were crunchy and helped a little, but that was the extent of it, which frankly was not enough. Also, as soon as I picked up the taco, the shell fell apart. Not even their salsa could save this meal, as it was watered down. El Burrito seems to be skimping on key ingredients..and ultimately, they're not putting enough love into what could be an excellent menu. Also, 10/10 do not recommend the guacamole. If you're gonna eat here, make sure you have a large amount of Valentina on hand to make it a more enjoyable meal. This was ordered via takeout. read more

I would go back. They give you one free order of chips, and salsa if you ask for more they will charge you. I asked for more, and didn't known we'd be charged, but it was only $2.50, and they need to stay in business. The only two things that I would change would be if you order the Vegetable burrito it's stir fry vegetables like broccoli, etc... I'm not complaining maybe some people like that. But since it was a Mexican restaurant I was expecting Southwestern vegetables so the meal would have a more Latino feel. I've been coming here since the 90s and I've always liked this hole in the wall Mexican place. IMHO they have the best menudo in Hawaii. The broth is spot on and lots of tripe. Small is $7 and large is $10. It comes with a choice of flour or corn tortillas and all the fixings. I had a combo plate with a tamale and a chile relleno, refried beans and rice $11. My +1 had a steak taco $5 and refried beans $2.75. I've had better Chile rellenos and tamales, but the menudo is awesome. Service was great. They offered to chill my beers and gave us extra limes and salsa without nickel and diming us. It's BYOB. Parking is challenging. I need to go back and eat more menudo and try a burrito. read more

We usually order the chimichangas and taco salads and occasionally tacos. I first started coming to El Burrito over twenty-five years ago. This was always my favorite "go to" Mexican restaurant on Oahu. I think, though, I have ever only ordered one dish in all my many times of coming here over the years. That is the chicken chimichangas. I just returned to Hawaii after being gone for over a decade with six of those years in San Antonio, TX. I feel I do know a bit about Tex Mex. I have been afraid to re-try El Burrito though based on the reviews on Yelp. I guess I didn't want my memory tarnished. Today I took the plunge and gave El Burrito a chance. Was it exactly the same as I remember it? No. Although the elderly couple that ran it years ago are long gone, it is still serving food in that same style (at least the chicken chimichangas) that I use to love. My food was prepared the way I like it with chopped up chilies. Chicken was plentiful, moist, and hot. No complaints there. I also had it ala carte, no beans or rice. I'd give four stars, but am deducting a star for charging for chips. They used to be complimentary. Ambiance is Tex-Mex and the place was clean. Service was prompt and friendly. I am not sure why this place is getting such poor ratings. You can do much worse. read more

I don't usually write reviews but the great reviews deceived me into trying something new. I got the steak burrito and my boyfriend got the chicken burrito and on the side a chicken quesadilla. The burrito wasn't terrible tasting just dry and very plain (steak burrito only comes with beans and meat) but our lettuce with the tomatoes on top of the burrito was bad and smelled like rotting cheese. If you want your Mexican fix definitely recommend Alejandros Mexican in Kalihi or Taco Bell would even be a better alternative. read more

I recently had a very late lunch/early dinner here. There's a very small dining room from which you can see part of the kitchen. My first hint of things to come should have been that there was no smell of food wafting through the place. By now, I was the only one in the place. Then I heard the sound no diner wants to hear: The unmistakable ping of a microwave oven. Now I understood why I didn't smell any food. The chips were overcooked and tasted burnt. The cubed chicken in the taco was so dry, I nearly choked on it. The meat in the burrito was watery. The red sauce (possibly canned) on the enchilada glowed orange. Nothing had any flavor. Clearly, the food had been prepared who knows how long in advance, frozen, and reheated in the microwave. I thought maybe I was on a new TV show, "Candid Camera Kitchen Nightmares." But neither Alan Funt nor Gordon Ramsay were there. I was just me and the food. Soon I stopped eating because I felt ill. I spent the next two hours trying to keep the food down. This was the second worst meal I ever had. I would give zero stars if I could. It is really a shame because this place has potential. It needs a major overhaul, though. I suggest shortening the menu and making the food fresh. The dining room is small enough to make this work. The folks there are very nice, and I wish them luck, but they need to make substantial changes. read more

Wow, great food, and friendly staff. I had been craving good Mexican food and am strict vegetarian. I have trouble finding Mexican food that does not use lard and chicken broth in everything. They were very transparent about their ingredients and willing to work with me and accommodate my preferences.
