One of us had the taquitos and it was served warm, not hot The second person had the special enchiladas and the whole dish was served cold! The server couldn't believe it either when she touched the plate. It was microwaved, but still was luke warm. Enchilada sauce and rice dried up when micowaved. Ugh. It was very good and tasty. My wife ordered the chimichanga plate with rice & bean and really enjoyed her meal, first time she ordered this normally she orders quesadillas. They served fresh cooked chips and roasted salsa which you know is home made the flavor is different and delicious with a slight roasted flavor. "Twelfth man on the deal team, last to know". That's me. A decent "Mexican" spot that I've driven by hundreds of times. First, being Hawaii, decent means not using pasta sauce to replace pico, not using shredded processed cheese, and not using refried beans from a can. Don't think of comparing this to that "authentic ethnic" spot in LA or the over border drunken stint in TJ. All the requisites from tortas, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, sopas including pozole and menudo, on offer. Complimentary C&S, just OK. Kinda soggy chips and the watery salsa doesn't much depth despite being fire roasted and not much spice heat. No complaints on the basic rice and refried beans that accompanied the large, stuffed trio of chicken empanadas (usually comes with two, add an additional for $5). Flavorful enough but not that complex mole. They are finished off with some sour cream, raw onions and crumbled cotija. Solid. Fast, friendly service with servers who seem to know their regulars well. Fair pricing with almost everything sub $30. It is what it is. Mario, the owner of the restaurant, was our server and was engaging, friendly, and helpful. The salsa and home made chips were a terrific teaser before dinner. The chips were crispy and delicious, not greasy at all! And the salsa was perfectly seasoned with a little hot to spice it up. I had the chicken mole plate, which comes with corn or flour tortillas, refried beans, rice and a small fresh salad. ONO! And quite a large serving, too much for me to finish. My significant other had the enchilada plate, which was delicious too. The enchiladas were like open tacos, with all the steak and fixings on top of the shell. Yum! And dessert was the banana flautas, which were like hot banana lumpia, though NOT greasy, but light, dusted with cinnamon and sugar and a caramel sauce and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. I must have Los my mind because I can't believe I haven't done a review for Los Chaparros yet. This place is one of our all-time favorites. We've been frequenting this owner-operated, small-business for years. And by years, I mean decades. This neighborhood joint has survived for 20 years! That says something... From casual weekday lunches, to quiet dinner dates, to lively get togethers with friends, we've enjoyed many meals at Los Chaparros, and they've never let us down. Service is warm and welcoming with long-time staff that remember your name and greet you like you are visiting their home. The owner Mario is often serving and bussing tables, too. His graciousness extends to his menu where he shares some of his cherished family recipes including a lip-smacking mole. The menu also features some Tex-Mex inspired dishes like quesadillas and tortas. There is something for everyone! This is especially true since I'm a pescatarian and my husband is an everything-tarian. We always share a side salad with the chipotle ranch dressing. And we change it up and have enjoyed everything for their enchiladas to burritos to chimichangas to tacos. All are delicious! Lots of vegetarian and pescatarian options for me. Lots of beef options for the hubby. The green chile soup is a bowl full of flavor and comfort. They have combos where you can select your entree and have a soup, salad, or rice and beans making it easy for you to customize your meal to your liking or mood. They also make a marvelous margarita and offer some good beer options that pair well with their dishes. The parking lot isn't big but there is street parking nearby. And people do a lot of take out too, although we never have. We prefer enjoying the food in the homeyness of the restaurant. Bright colored walls featuring pictures of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Booth and table options accommodate small and large parties. There are so many reasons we keep coming back to this place. My partner and I was really craving for Mexican food and had a spot in mind at first. However, that spot sold out of the item(s) we wanted to try so we ended up searching for Mexican food last minute. We found los chapparos and made our way there. The parking situation is a bit rough, there are very limited parking lot space in front of the establishment but it was already fully occupied. We had to drive around a couple of times in the area to find a street parking spot. We made our way to the establishment and were quickly seated. The waiter was very enthusiastic and friendly, engaging with every table he had. They have a pretty expansive menu so I struggled a bit to decide on what to order. I eventually inquired and the waiter recommended the LC fiesta burrito which I got and my partner got the combo plate with a quesadilla and enchilada, both with carnitas. He meant to order carne asada but he "didn't want my help" smh. The dishes took a WHILE to come out, but we had chips and salsa to keep up occupied. My burrito was good, the proteins were flavorful and the steak wasn't too tough. I do feel like the burrito size was a bit lacking for its price and I usually like to eat my burrito with plenty of salsa which wasn't provided. My partner's combo plate was good, nothing blew our minds but it was a good meal. I do feel like his order would've been perfect if he got the actual protein he wanted (carne asada). We ended the meal with churros, it was also good and a bit excessive in sugar which we had to shake off. I feel like there should've been more ice cream as it was the perfect pair for churros but there was only a tiny amount of ice cream (a FULL scoop would've been perfect). I'm not super sure if we would come back, nothing was bad but nothing was worth knocking my top Mexican spots off its feet. read more

This place has probably the best Mexican food on island! I haven't been here in years since the parking is usually really bad, however, we went later in the night and it was a great time to go. The place had a great colorful atmosphere and we were given chips and salsa once we sat down. Their salsa is so tasty and the chips were fresh and crisp. I ordered the Enchilada del Bajio which came with a red sauce, grilled onions, and fried potatoes on top. As well as rice and beans on the side. It was so flavorful and I was able to get two different types of meat which was nice. Everything was so yummy and we left feeling full. Another thing to remember is that they charge a 3% fee on credit cards, so I recommend paying in cash. They will automatically apply the 3% fee on your bill, so just make sure to notify your waiter that you would like to pay in cash and they will remove the fee for you. read more

The salsa changed color since the last time I came here. It's a dark color instead of red tomatoes with round onion and cilantro. Chile relleno is good. Don't let my photo fool you. Sorry, I mixed my rice and beans together before I took the photo. Hoping the beans will be less runny. Chimichanga was nice and crispy with same runny beans. My lunch partner ordered it with ground beef instead of the usual shredded beef, but you have a choice. My lunch partner likes ground beef instead of the regular pull meats. This is the only place that we found that has ground beef in most of their dishes. They have weekdays lunch special for certain dishes which includes you choice of soft drinks. Pros: Good food. Good friendly service. Cons: The beans were runny and the salsa was not fresh. Small parking lot. Hard to turn around and had back out of the parking lot. Supremo... After a long day and night market that I made the choice to wait in the long line for matcha all other food options were basically sold out lo!!! What I do love is there's lots of options to choose from and Los Champarros has been on my list for quite some time and the reason for it is the parking. The one direction lot is painfully tiny and if it's full finding street parking is just as painful on this busy street and in this night was no different as they had just one single stall. Feeling lucky it was my time and I embraced it and ordered my food to go. Taco Supremo was much choice as for what it describes it's almost like a bowl and a veggie was my choice that I'm so ready for. The vibe in this cozy restaurant is nice and simple as it is a bit dated but very nice and clean with a slight touch of tasteful decor and the music wasn't blaring to a point that you can't hear yourself, staff is very polite and friendly being so helpful as a few checked on me if I'd been helped while I wait for my take out is very awesome. "Miss Irene your order is ready" very nice and not a long wait at all took it home and it didn't disappoint though the veggies seem to be cooked to death or was probably frozen as it was all limp and had no color in it and the variety is quite interesting and the load on top of the tortilla is insane if you can see the tortilla under it all as I basically ate it like a salad. Love that it came with chips and salsa and it hat a bit of heat to it and looks house made. I'd probably ask for the tortilla on the side next time as it got destroyed by the toppings and was basically useless as a vessel but a lovely filling meal that satisfied my cravings. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants on Oahu. I like the colorful ambiance and welcoming vibes. We were greeted and seated right away. They have booths and tables. This time I wanted to try something different so we went with the table. We ordered ceviche, 1 choice beef burrito with beans and rice, and 1 choice green sauce enchilada with pozole. It was the first time I tried their Ceviche. It was served with what I think was mayo and it was sweet, but I prefer more salty and savory flavor. The atmosphere was energetic in a dimly lit environment. I got the Taco Supremo with shrimp... without jalapeños. It was still a bit spicy for me... and filling, so I took half home. The flour tortilla held up well, the veggies were fresh, and the shrimp were plump and firm! Yum! I'm glad that I finally got a chance to dine at this old school establishment! I'd go again! This place is hidden close to Waikīkī, with a small parking lot. I recommend to walk if possibly due to limited parking spaces. We got there at around 6:30 pm and there was around a 30 minute wait. It went by pretty quickly and they come out to call on you. We got sat down and had free chips and salsa (was charged for 50 cents on the bill). The chips were yummy and perfectly spicy salsa. I ordered a guava margarita for about $10.50 since there was a sale and we also got a strawberry margarita. My margarita did not really have alcohol in it, as I didn't taste or feel any alcohol, maybe a 1/2 shot worth in the drink. I also got a 2 plate combo with chicken enchiladas with green sauce and taquitos with shredded beef. I also got rice and beans. This was delicious. I loved the flavors and it was a perfect amount of food. Decent price as well! Our server was also really nice and attentive, and had nice decor inside. After being away from SoCal for over a week, my husband and I were craving some Mexican food and weren't expecting to find many options. This place was recommended by my mom, who visited Honolulu over 10 years ago, and we didn't have high expectations but we wanted to give it a shot. The rice, the rice, I am very picky about my rice at any Mexican restaurant and wow, their rice was surprisingly better than most I've had in LA. My husband loved his carnitas chimichanga (not common in LA), along with a shredded beef hard shell taco. He swapped the usual rice and beans for a bowl of red pork posole, which he thought was good. The salsa had a nice kick to it too! I played it safe with the shredded chicken green enchilada (green was said to be spicy, red mild) and a side of shredded beef taquitos, both were delicious! The enchilada had a good level of heat which is what I was looking for. I loved the cotija cheese on top, very authentic. If you're in Honolulu and craving Mexican food, I highly recommend this spot. I had a beef enchilada and a steak chimichanga combo platter with a side of menudo but next time I'm absolutely trying something new from their menu! The menudo was soo good, I would definitely get extra limes. The churros were crispy on the outside and so warm and fluffy inside, the vanilla ice cream they used was especially creamy and flavorful too! To top it off, they give a free churro dessert of a smaller portion than the one pictured (this is a regular order) for birthdays while also putting a sombrero on you and singing. The service is always super friendly and excellent, and they take great care of you even on the busiest nights. All of these people work hard to make the experience enjoyable and I've not been disappointed yet. While it is still yummy to takeout, we have enjoyed it more when we dine in. The restaurant is lively and enjoyable to be at. It feels a bit like being in someone's home! They give you chips and salsa when you takeout and when you dine in. The chips taste fresh and the salsa has a darker flavor than others. The service is typically quick and they are always friendly. We got three super chaparros burritos with green sauce, green and red sauce, and no sauce. We also got an LC Serrano Melt. The super chaparros burrito is very filling and tasty. Tells you their patrons don't mind waiting or parking farther just to eat there. I've had different dishes from enchiladas, huge burritos, fajitas, flautas, chili relleno, tamal (tamale) etc. What stands out the most is their salsa!!! They charbroil the peppers to make their salsa and whatever they do it comes out the best salsa ever. You can buy a container of it to take home too. (Kinda expensive though) However, the last few times I've eaten here I've noticed the guacamole hasn't been the same. Last night's guacamole had so much tomato chunks it was obvious they were running out of avocados or they've changed their recipe! Super disappointing cause they still charge a lot for the large portion! They never used to put tomato chunks or next time I'll tell them not to put that in. Honolulu has lots of great food options but when it comes to Mexican cuisine it's a desert wasteland. Los Chaparros is a flavor oasis to seek out good Mexican grindz. I highly recommend the chile Colorado dish which has small pieces of cooked pork that melt in your mouth and it's covered in a umami tomato sauce punctuated with chiles and Mexican spices. It comes with rice, beans and choice of corn or flour tortillas. The tortillas are piping hot and fresh! I tried the 2 choice combo with fish tacos, chile relleno, salad and a side of beans. Everything was very tasty and I had tons of leftovers. The fish in the tacos tastes fresh, and has nice seasoning and is cooked perfectly. The Chile relleno has tons of cheese and a nice egg batter with a tasty red sauce that makes me want to eat like 5 of them!!! I also tried the Al pastor quesadillas in the 2 choice combo (the perfect match to any combo is to get the Chile relleno to pair with it). The quesadilla was a decent size and so packed with tender meat inside. The meat is not greasy at all which me and my heartburn appreciates. I know it sounds basic but their rice and beans are delicious. Lots of other restaurants mess this up and to me, it's all part of the meal. Their rice has good flavors and is perfectly cooked so it's fluffy but has a good chewy bite to it. The beans are tender and flavorful. The service is wonderful. AT is a fun and knowledgeable server/ also a chef there so he knows what's in each dish and had great recommendations for us. He's also very friendly and funny! They also have quite a selection at the bar and the drink prices are good IMO. Especially compared to Mexico restaurant in Kalihi which charges an arm and a leg for a drink. I love that they offer Mezcal margaritas and have a daily drink special. If you can deal with the lack of parking and occasional wait time, it's well worth it. read more

The taco supremo's pretty much three overfilled open faced tacos that come topped with sautéed bell peppers and onions, lettuce, cucumbers, shredded cheese and sour cream. You have the option of carnitas, chicken, steak, or veggies ($18) or shrimp of fish ($19). Side salsa and lime wedges are also included with the entree. I chose chicken with flour tortillas and my friends chose fish with corn tortillas. It's a lot of food for the price but again, lacking flavor. I mean it looks pretty! But, no real flavor. The salsa is definitely missing salt and as far as the chicken goes there doesn't seem to be any marinating of flavor here. Also, since we are topping the tortillas with such a lot of items be prepared to have soggy tortillas that are unable to be handled with your hands. You'll need a fork and knife to eat this dish. This establishment has literally 6 parking spaces so be mindful of that. Also, if you request additional 'complimentary chips and salsa' you will be charged, $5.25! Parking - the lot has maybe 6 stalls. We were a little jammed getting out with people wanting to come in as we went out. Service - they were welcoming & since it was lunch it was quick to get a table. The staff were super friendly ! Food overall - you do get free salsa and chips at the beginning! - combo w/ chicken quesadilla & enchilada w/ red sauce. I wish the quesadillas had something addition like a sauce or stronger seasoning on the chicken. The enchilada and red sauce was tasty! We decided to go on a whim on a Tuesday around 6:30 pm and it wasn't too busy. The parking lot was full (they only have about six stalls) but we did score parking right across the street! We were a party of 8 and we were seated right away. They started us off with chips and salsa. The salsa was sooooo flavorful we ended up getting refills. I then decided to get a blended margarita which had the perfect amount of ice. I had my boyfriend order the Texas Burrito and I had the Jalapeño BBQ Torta since I couldn't decide between the two and both were phenomenal. I do wish there was more mayo on the torta but I am a mayo girly so if you're not, feel free to ignore my comment (there's a good amount of bbq sauce)! Despite the name saying Jalapeno it wasn't spicy either but it did have the flavor. The host and our server were also very nice and super attentive, so I can't wait to be back to try what else they got on the menu! read more
