With only a few hours between church services on the weekend my fiancé and I tend to go to our normal hot spots - ramen, curry, burgers, the occasional k-bbq and pho joints. But we were looking for something different, quick, and tasty. That's what we got at K-Mex HI although to be quite frank - the parking lot here is terrible! Mostly due to their location in the middle of the street with a handful of street parking locations shared with multiple other businesses down the lane. It took us 3 rounds of driving before we ended up deciding it was better to drop me off to order and pick up the food and have my man drive around into another larger parking lot to wait the 15-ish minutes it would take for our food to be ready. The owners were so nice. Answering all of my insistent questions, smiling when I ended up ordering something different from what they recommended on the menu (my bad - it's a question I ask all businesses even though I usually decide what I want beforehand LOL). They asked if I needed a bag, if I needed utensils and napkins, and even checked in on me while they made the food! Awesome service and I'm sure it would be the same if we decided to eat in. I liked the atmosphere. It was small but homely, clean, and there were a few small fish tanks in the corner! 15-ish minutes later, food packed up - I jumped back in the car and we drove down to South Shore Market in Ward to eat at the tables and take a glance if Ocean Taste's line was... long (it was). And let me tell you... the food? Delicious. The amount of food? Good for the price! And overall pretty darn great experience. I wasn't the biggest fan of the spicy pork (not my preference). But my fiancé liked it and his only comment was that it was a bit greasy for his liking. Reminded him he was in-fact eating spicy pork which is normally served on his plate lunch in a piece of tinfoil so the oil doesn't get everywhere! The carne asada was super delish along with the gochujang hot sauce cups we found at the bottom of the bag. I'd get K-Mex HI again if I was in the area but I'd love to see them in another location where I can more easily park! That's the only real bummer about this place and has deterred me from returning. :( read more

Cute little taco place nestled between a couple buildings off to the back end. They have a "double parking " lot which means if you leave before the person parked behind you then you need to wait or hope they move for you. We got lucky because it was only take out/pick up orders so nobody stayed parked behind us for long. There is also street parking. I had 3 tacos and did 2 chicken and 1 beef. They have several sauces to choose from that range from hot to hotter imo lol...a Tapatio and some other brands. Mine actually tasted great without it. It's a cute place that has two big tvs My bff suggested this place as it sounded different from our standard lunch spot We were confused if we were parked in the right spot. We went in and asked, they said that we were good My bff asked what was most popular and we were told the Spicy Pork Burrito or the Spicy Pork Bowl (Burrito with out the tortilla) She went with the Burrito with the Carne Asada. I had the Spicy Pork Bulgogi Bowl My Bff enjoyed the burrito a lot and she almost finished it The Spicy Pork Bulgogi bowl was delicious! K-Mex was one of the few restaurants open on Fourth of July, and I'm glad I discovered this spot! They're located on Kawaihao Street next to other small businesses. I think there were a few parking stalls. I placed an online order and walked to pick it up. There was some seating inside. The lady working was friendly and helpful. They have Korean-Mexican inspired dishes. I got the bulgogi burrito and the jackfruit torta. The bulgogi burrito was very hefty, and the bulgogi was super flavorful. I had no clue what a torta was, but it was basically a sandwich with lettuce and jackfruit. I rarely have jackfruit, but it was really juicy and tasty. Finally got to try this place. We came with the last 40mins open so they were out of queso and beans. We placed an order of Chicken bowl - fiance was pleasantly surprised how good the chicken was. He was also really happy he added the veggies. He said he'll pass on the guac next time. Spicy pork burrito- friend enjoyed it! Firstly, I am a recent convert to lactose-ovo vegetarianism. The majority of food establishments offer limited options for vegetarians , let alone vegans, and K-Mex HI isn't any different in this regard. Located on Kawaihao Street and Ward Avenue...not sure where you park. They are inside a small driveway...but they do have signs up. Open for a little over a year. I got takeout, there is a small dining area, by ordering online. On time...actually got a notification a few minutes before my scheduled pickup time. I had the mixed vegetables bowl. They offer options Mexican rice...pinto or spicy black beans...kimchi salsa...cheese...one can also select to not include those options. A bit disappointed as I do not care for bell peppers unless they are cooked well-done. Too crunchy and too many peppers. Offered a side container of hot sauce...and it was hot. They also offer jackfruit as a substitute for animal protein...and I will try that option on my next visit. I've had jackfruit tacos before and they are okay. Been there twice. I remember the first time going there their carne asada was delicious. But the second time around it was just OK. My husband enjoyed their spicy pork and it was pretty flavorful although I thought it's a bit too sweet, same as their bulgogi. The service was very friendly and you order at the counter. They made our food fresh so it's worth the wait. It's a small mom and pop shop with just a few tables. We were the only table in the restaurant on a weekday for lunch. It's located at the part of queen street that is not paved well with pot holes and without a sidewalk, also not much parking, so that could make driving and walking there a bit tricky. read more

I actually wanted to visit Waba Snacks, which is in the front of the property. The Waba Snacks staff told me to come back in about 20 minutes because the machine wasn't ready yet. The young man at the front handed me a takeout menu for K-Mex HI and showed me how to get to K-Mex HI through their back door... cool! The two businesses are associated with each other! K-Mex HI is a quiet, clean, trendy spot with Instagram opportunities. The two big screen TVs and the condiment bar keep customers entertained. There's an air conditioning unit and a ceiling fan that circulates the cool air sufficiently. Service was on the brisk, but efficient side. Interaction was something like this: Me: I'd like to get the bowl with the kimchi salsa on the side. Gal: choose a protein Me: beef bulgogi Gal: pinto or black beans? Me: black Gal: Here or To go? Me: here (She told me the total price.) Me: (looking at the refrigerator to my left) May I add on? A tamarind... no... a watermelon? Gal: (not smiling) (gave me the total) I took a seat and snapped a few photos. She brought my bowl to me and told me that the bottle opener was on the wall and pointed. Alright! My bowl was OK. Today on my lunch break I wanted to try something different from what I've been having these past few weeks. Tacos, Korean? por qué no los dos? K-Mex HI delivers on that mix of Mexican/Korean other shops try to send! My tacos were delicious, the service was amazing, and the dinning area was great, all at a good price. I ordered the three tacos and got one Regular and spicy bulgogi, and one Carne Asada. They all come topped with onion, cilantro, and a Kimchi salsa which tasted amazing. Over all these tacos really hit the spot and some, But if I had to choose a favorite between these three I'd have to go with the spicy bulgogi. It had a perfect balance of sweet and spicy, then mixed with the kimchi salsa brought it all together. The price for three tacos was 13.00$, that's nearly 4 dollars a taco which is cheap compared to other places on the island! Also with that; the atmosphere and service made it all the better. I only waited about 5 mins for my food which was perfect since I was only on a 30 min lunch break. I sat and watched the tv right next to my table and enjoyed the relaxing mood that covers the entire restaurant. The server was super friendly and was very helpful with the menu as well. I can definitely see this being a great Pauhana spot in the future, or even somewhere I'd have my birthday at! I honestly couldn't believe how empty this place was when I finished eating. All that's left to be said is that K-Mex HI is a super underrated spot that needs more love, stop by for your weekly taco craving and give it a shot. Been walking past their sign on the way to other stores and restaurants on the same street, and finally stopped in with a friend to grab lunch. So glad we finally did - I enjoyed Korean Mexican fusion more than the food truck closer to our work, and the prices were better! I'm not a fan of spicy foods so I asked them to hold the kimchi salsa in my street tacos, and opted to add sour cream and guacamole for extra. These babies were packed with meat and flavor - I got Spicy Pork Bulgogi, Beef Bulgogi and Mojo Chicken (fourth meat choice is Carne Asada Steak, which would be a buck extra). Formerly Tacoholics HI from Ohana Hale Marketplace and almost a year since its closure, they took a much needed break and reorganized it all found a new home right along Kawaiahao Street with only being two weeks newly opened the only way to find them is a banner/sign right on the fence of their parking. Right behind waba snacks vibrant pink storefront which they do share more than a family/sister biz it's the same lot and theirs no sign on their front door which looks more like a residence but just walk through the sliding door outlined in orange and there they are. Love the simple decor with some tables and bar counter, cute inflatable Jarritos and fun Instagram wall "Life is too short to be HANGRY"...so true lol! What something I instantly discovered is there isn't any air-conditioning and I was already hot just waiting which makes me image what it'd be like during summer ewww!! With that I decided to take my meal home for dinner and got a bowl for $13 which includes rice, beans, cheese, onion, kimchi salsa, sour cream and choice of protein (Korean inspired: Beef Bulgogi or Spicy Pork Bulgogi), (Mexican Inspired: Carne Asada Steak +$1 or Mojo Chicken) or (Vegetarian/Vegan: Jackfruit Tinga or Grilled Veggies). Also available are Burritos, Tacos, Quesadilla, Tortas and Salads I was tempted to get a side of Chips and Kimchi Salsa but will keep for the next visit. I decided to top my bowl with Spicy Pork Bulgogi and what a yummy well balanced bowl it was. Tucked away at the end of a driveway between The Rice Factory and car repair joints, I have hopes for this place. Especially since I'm always in the area and on the lookout for food. They have what I would consider to be a solid, basic menu of options to go with your choice of Korean or Mexican inspired fillings. Had a spicy pork burrito. Was craving Mexican and my fiancé found this place on maps. Walked in and it looked like we were some of the first customers. Plenty of seating, very clean and spacious. I ordered the Bulgogi Burrito (no beans). My fiancé ordered the carne asada tacos. The food came out fairly quickly. The owners are very nice, chatted with us for a bit and even gave us some complimentary chips and fresh made guacamole - so delicious. Everything was great! The burrito was huge! Bigger than my water bottle, and I really liked the flavors of the bulgogi inside the burrito with the kimchi salsa and rice. Try the green habanero sauce - it's amazing, not too spicy and compliments the sweetness of the bulgogi well. The restaurant called us a couple minutes after our order informing us that they were out of steak, so we decided to get spicy pork instead. When we went to pick up our food, the worker (I think the owner?) told us we could grab a Jarritos for free on him since he didn't have steak for our original order. He's so nice! For the tacos, we added cheese. For the bowl, we added grilled veggies and guac. The tacos were filled with meat and each taco was wrapped in 2 corn tortillas. The bowl was loaded to the max, which I loved. It had a nice kick to it. Not sure if it's from the spicy pork or from the kim chee salsa. We tried this place on whim because we were hungry for lunch and were in the area. I have to say... food was OK, but I wasn't blown away like I thought I'd be after reading all the stellar reviews. I'm an LA native and have frequented many years of the infamous Kogi tacos, this wasn't relatively close to the taste (although I wasn't expecting that when we decided to try it). The guacamole was good/ok. We also ordered quesadillas, tacos and torta. We tried the Mojo Chicken, Carne Asada and Beef Bulgogi proteins in our orders. Small restaurant in the kakaako area. I've never heard of this place but after seeing it on Yelp, I decided to give it a try. The menu had a few options to choose from including burritos, tacos, bowls and a sandwich. They also had some side dishes which we went with the chips and Queso. It was a unique concept in which some of the meat options were Korea style bulgogi or spicy bulgogi. It definitely added more of a sweet and spicy to your usual Mexican food. The portions looked small but I was very full after eating. The food also comes out relatively fast, one thing to note is that they don't have water cups so bring your own water. read more

They make their guac fresh daily and for someone who dislikes avocado, I would come back just for their guacamole. The rest of the food I ordered was really good here. I tried their carne asada tacos, chicken quesadilla and a burrito ( it was massive!). Their spicy pork is superb as well and they make their own gochujang here which is so addictive! Tucked away in a building set back from off Kawaiahao Street, the restaurant is homey and quaint with adequate seating and countertop service. Big favorites for us are the Mojo Chicken Tacos, shredded chicken breast, with a citrus punch and the spicy Pork tacos...a lovingly true rendition of Korean Spicy pork. The Beef Bulgogi tacos are also good, but i just cant get past the spicy pork. We order our tacos very simply, with onions, cilantro and their house-made kimchi salsa! Chips are not made in house, but their guacamole is and it's excellent! We haven't tried the burritos yet, but they look massive! The prices are very reasonable with three tacos for $12, the side order of chips is enough to share for two people and a side of rice and beans for $2.50 you've got a great meal that doesn't break the budget! Free Parking: Initially, we were confused as where to park. One sign said KINMEYAKI (Mom's in the front.) and the other K-MEX HI (husband & wife in the back.) Since the family owns both business, you can park on either side. Atmosphere: K-MEX HI - order at the counter, casual, clean, air conditioning, two TV's, four tables. 16 -20 people can dine comfortably, spacious. KINMEYAKI - small tables, cozy, open to air. Food: Comforting. Filling. They have one of the better guacamoles in Honolulu. To fully appreciate the FRESHNESS of their guac, order the chips & guacamole ($3.) instead of adding guac ($1.50) into the burrito. Pick your protein: We tried all the proteins except for the jackfruit bc none of us are vegans. All the proteins were good but if you need help in picking one hope this helps you. * Beef Bulgogi - umami/shoyu flavor * Spicy Pork Bulgogi - flavorful but not spicy at all. * Carne Asada steak (+$1) - saltiest of all the proteins. As I get older there are fewer new experiences out there even when it comes to food. I missed the boat on Korean Mexican fusion somehow - didn't see it much in NY or SD. My first experience with it here did not disappoint. Somehow the Korean flavors went really well with this cuisine and I just thoroughly enjoyed my food and the new experience. Will DEFINITELY go back. So they are a new business without a phone yet. So can't call in orders for pickup. The proprietors said that they will be getting a website up soon with online ordering capabilities. This will be a huge difference bc the parking situation in that area is not good so having to go inside to order and wait is challenging. We went super early for dinner and the spot was open so we could back in and not get trapped. They also said you could DM them on Instagram to order. We don't do that. Early dinner = we are old curmudgeons that are not willing to learn/get/use IG. I got the spicy pork bulgogi bowl with added grilled veggies and guacamole for $15.50. So totally delicious and worth it. Definitely get the added veggies and guacamole for 2.50 more. The spicy sweetness of the pork makes for undeniably Korean flavors coming through. It just works with the rice and beans and veg etc. They provide hot sauce in to go containers which was a perfect accompaniment. The hub got bulgogi burrito with added grilled veggies and guacamole for the same price. First of all perfect distribution of all the ingredients so that all bites throughout the length of the burrito are consistent! It is so sad and disappointing when all the guac is at one end and you end up with a dry bite of beans and rice. Anyhow this was perfectly distributed and all the deliciousness was equal in every bite. Get the guac and veggies. The proprietors were also very lovely. Friendly and careful with our order. Packed it up nicely for us and wrote our orders on the packaging so I could distinguish between different burritos and bowls (we also picked up for our neighbors). With the lights that have the restaurant it's a nice warm atmosphere. I got the tacos. It comes with three little tacos and you can choose your protein. I got carne asada, beef bulgogi and the chicken. The carne asada wasn't bad, but wasn't anything special. The beef bulgogi was delicious! It had a nice marinade that made the meet so tasty. The hardest part about making chicken dishes is making sure it ain't dry, but theirs were nice and juicy! Service was great, the cashier was really nice and the cook serving the food had good energy. A very cute Korean Mexican mix spot in Kaka'ako. Used to be at Ohana market place. The spicy bulgogi was flavorful and spicy. Good portions for the tacos. The steak bowl was regular nothing fancy or extra stand out ish but good. Parking right in the front of the entrance. Lots of indoor seating. The lady that helped was really nice. read more

I got me some Beef Bulgogi and Spicy Pork Bulgogi Tacos, chips and Special Salsa. I gotta check out the burritos next. Owners Kim and Leon Korean Americans from Hawaii but lived in the Bay Area for a time. Started this as a side gig hobby. I discovered this place as a joint to check out for lunch while working. I'm Half Korean so this place gets my "Korean Hapa Seal of Approval" . I miss my mom's cooking too. Her mom runs a Korean Pastry store next door called "Waba Snacks". I bought 8 of her pastries for my co-workers and they were devoured in less than a hour. So good. Be careful with the parking and pulling out. I ordered a beef bulgogi burrito and chips and queso blanco. I liked everything that I got except the rice. I didn't taste KimChi in the KimChi salsa, but I still liked it. I just wish I had ordered some Guacamole too. read more

I had the Jackfruit tika burrito which was great. My wife had the bulgogi burrito which she enjoyed, she was a little worried about the Kim chee salsa being too spicy so had it on the side but she koves loved it. Owners were very nice. Definitely coming back! They have 4 tables for 4 inside and additional seating outside. Saw others grabbing take out, we ate in. It's across the street from Hana Koa Brewery so worth grabbing something to eat before grabbing a beer if you are headed to the brewery. read more

Amazing Korean Mexican Fusion! My friends introduced us to this eatery and I'm definitely going to take out food and bring visitors. We all had different entrees. Each was delicious according to each diner. I took a bite of my husband's pork burrito so I can claim knowledge of 50% of the meals. It's a bare bones dining area but bright, clean, and you can chat with the owner-chefs. The portions are generous. Vegetarians will have a great option in the jackfruit Tinga style.
