My husband happened to be browsing online for Games Workshop retailers, and this place came up. I was mildly incredulous, but sure enough, El Cajon Hobbies does carry some GW merchandise. Our first visit to the store was very underwhelming. The customer service was tepid at best (see non-existent), and we actually left without having purchased anything. I did peruse the GW merchandise, however, and noticed that the pricing was below MSRP, which was very unusual (and awesome). We decided to give the store another go a few weeks later when we needed some Citadel paints and had a much better experience. The staff members who helped us were extremely amiable, and we were encouraged to come back and play Warhammer during their game day. We have since frequented the store several more times, and I have really taken a liking to it. The pricing is extremely reasonable, and the staff members seem more than happy to take order requests on products they don't have in stock. While my first experience with the store was lukewarm, I will definitely continue to frequent El Cajon Hobbies after having several good experiences. read more

First time stopping at this store as it's pretty far from my house on the off chance that they might have the part I needed for my very outdated sc10, and much to my surprise they did. I came down from LA to buy an RC Nitro from someone on EBAY and took the NItro Truck to El Cajon Hobbies to have them help me out in tuning it and making sure it was a good deal. The guys there helped me out and got it running and gave tips on how to maintain the truck and were very friendly. Much thanks to the guys at El Cajon Hobbies for helping a newbie to nitro RC''s. Ryan is the greatest dude! I have been wanting to learn how to wire an LED to a battery and I didn't know where to go because FRY's and Radio Shack are out of business. So I called El Cajon Hobbies and spoke to Ryan on how I wanted to learn them thinking someone at a hobby shop would deal with this kind of work, and he told me to come in and he would personally help me with it. MY GUY literally spent 2 HOURS in the store with me answering all my questions and basically teaching me the ins and outs of wiring and circuitry. I cannot thank this man enough because I didn't know where to go after watching countless videos on youtube and getting more confused, he made it simple and understandable and now I can totally do it on my own. Went to go buy an RC car with accessories but found a pitiful selection of items in stock, looks like the store is getting ready to move or go out of business- I wouldn't know since there was no one around to ask or get help. Waited around for about 20min. Employees pick and choose who they want to help, ignoring those who are patiently waiting their turn. Left after various other customers were helped. This is now my go to hobby shop instead of buying parts off the internet. The knowledge of Spencer and others at this shop far exceeds the small savings I could gain shopping online. Prices are fair for a brick and mortar, and I got the parts, and only the parts I needed due to Spencer troubleshooting my truck on site and recommending what needed to be replaced, and me not using the shotgun approach by buying parts online. I ended up reviving my DHK RAZ-R 2 based on their troubleshooting; making me, and my son very happy! Will only go to this shop now, and will likely buy any future trucks from here as well! There is a new owner now and when I went in I was treated super well. I actually bought a controller online (cause they didn't have it a few months back) and he actually helped me line it with my truck and do the adjustments with it no problem. I only bought batteries and a pinion gear for my traxxas slash and was in and out in a flash. He told me and another customer that was in the store that they were going to start stocking better parts and I noticed a few of the previously rude employees were gone which is a relief. If you had a bad experience go back and give them another shot. I feel bad but I didn't get he guys name, but ask for the owner tho he's the one to talk to, he's really cool and motivated to get you taken care of! read more

I don't know where to start, the employee's don't know there a** from a hole in the ground. Most the time they don't have the part in stock and offer to special order it. Last time i checked i can order parts online without have to leave my house. however i have spent money here before.. My last experience i bought two motors and some parts, spent like $300, I didn't get his name but the guy with a weird haircut wasn't very helpful at all in helping me decide what motors to get for what i would be using them for. checked me out at the register and didn't even look at me, just took my money and told me as if he were a robot. "have a nice day" being the older one of the group of employee's there i would assume he was the manager, which baffled me. nonetheless, that's the last time ill shop there and i don't recommend shopping here either. there are to many good hobby shops in San Diego like Discount Hobby, Hobby Central, and even SDRC which has a track and are a lot more personable and knowledgeable about the product they sell. read more

The person working there is obviously knowledgeable but cocky and will put you down if he assumes you are not as informed about RC as he is. Sold me a kit that was supposed to be ready out of the box, but forgot to mention the necessary tools which I could have easily purchased in the shop but now for obvious reasons won't. I get there no real hello, nor were they to willingto even look to see if they have a part I needed or anything comprable. They always seemed real into talking to the people they knew that were in the store. People will walk in after you and they will have a full on convo with them and being short with you IF they dont know you. Very dissapointed in the shop. I went into the store today to buy a RC buggie for my son's birthday. The store had a few customers so I browsed for about 5 mins and then was asked if I needed help. I explained was looking for a novice level, off-road biggie and that I had no knowledge on the subject. He stated that he didn't have anything like that but said I should look for a certain type of car and quoted a price. He then walked away without showing me anything, without saying he could get this car for me. Nothing. He looked inconvenienced and annoyed by my inquiry. I had a wallet full of cash and went to this store as opposed to going online to help a local business and I was turned away. Too bad. If I was treated like an average customer I would have kept coming back to upgrade cars or buy parts. Probably a great store for an experienced RC person but I felt out of place and my business unwanted. read more

Went there to buy a battery extension bracket for my son's Slash 4X4. Was sold the wrong part, which happens not a big deal, which I brought back for an exchange. They didn't have one in stock so they said they would order one and call when it was in. Week and a half later I stopped by for something else and asked about my part. Nice guy behind the counter said it wasn't in, but should have been and he can't find it. So once again it's put on order and I wait for the call. Go back in again for something else and decide to check on the part while there and they say it's in, but can't find it. Apparently the owner has a new girlfriend and she has become his priority. El cajon hobbies is a great place to go. The employees there are always friendly even when i heckle them and bug them for an hour. They carry everything for everything ive never left empty handed or with out gaining some knowledge about my cars. The owner has great knowledge about gas cars and trucks, especially 1/8 and 1/5 scale. They have a helicopter expert and a very educated younger employee who knows all about electric 1/10 scale and so on. Much better of a place to go than the morons at hobby people who barely acknowledge your existence and when they finally do they give u a glazed over blank stare wondering what the f#%k you are talking about. read more

I called and spoke to a guy named Marshall. I asked if they had a sensor wire for a brushless motor. He said they did so I asked what time they closed and he said in 15 mins. I told him I couldn't make it on time and then he said he offered to wait til 7:10 for me. That was nice of him so I drove down and got there at 7:03. The door was locked and the guy standing behind the counter wouldn't let me in. I tried to tell him that I was the one that called but he just said sorry we are closed. I'm never going back to this place. Don't tell me your going to wait and not do it. I understand that they close at 7, I was willing to wait till the next day but instead wasted my gas and time thinking you would do what you said you would. read more

This is a great hobby store. Its extremely close to where I live and I love it. I went to see if they carried tamiya paint and behold they have an amazing selection!!! Customer service was great as well. Very friendly and helpful. The only reason it only has a 4 star instead of five is the low choice of gundam models. Very minor reason. Went in here because someone wanted a gift certificate for their birthday. When I came in, there was only one employee that I could see behind the counter and he was helping someone else/ having a long conversation about some project the customer was doing. Fine, he was there first-- but the employee never even acknowledged me. I stood and waited for about 20 minutes while the two chatted, and in the meantime, another employee came out of the back. This guy didn't say anything to me either, didn't even look my way. Then, some other dude came in the store who was immediately greeted and helped by this employee. I waited some more. In that time, another man came in the store and was helped, and still no one acknowledged my existence or the fact that I had been here for over half an hour waiting near the counter (meanwhile, the guy behind the counter was still conversing with the other customer, just as he was when I walked in). So now I'm pretty sure it's because I'm a woman and these people are just assuming a woman wouldn't be buying anything here. Sexist much? Finally, after a total of 40 minutes, and just as I'm about to say screw it and leave, I finally manage to get eye contact with the other employee and he finally tentatively asks me if I need anything. I told him yes and mentioned that I had been waiting quite a while. His excuse for not saying anything earlier? He thought I was with the customer at the counter. Yeah, of course, because no woman would ever come in here without being with a man, right? Because we totally looked like we were together, despite the fact that we were standing at least 10 feet away from each other and never once looked at or spoke to each other. Even then, at least ASK. Just bad customer service, all the way around. No customer should have to wait 40 minutes to be acknowledged; even worse when it's fairly obvious the poor service is due to sexism, either blatant or covert. read more

Store Manager is cheap and makes terrible business decisions for his customers. Came here because they were the local go-to shop for RC car accessories. I needed some back up batteries for a pair of Traxxas Stampedes I had under the Christmas tree for my fiancée and I. A nice kid sold me a pair of Venom LiPo 5000s after I explained I already had a Traxxas EZPack dual charger. After getting home I sadly learned that the Venom LiPo batteries could not be charged by the Traxxas charger. I went back and spoke to the same employee and asked for a refund. He apologized and said he completely made a mistake, but instead of refunding me, he suckered me into buying me one of their dual chargers that would charge the batteries I should have never been sold in the first place. It's a few days before Christmas, what choice do I have. My fiancée and I used and charged the LiPo batteries exactly as explained by the store rep. After two uses, one of the batteries oddly reads "Overcharged" on the charger. I take the charger and the batteries back in and am told they are fine. The very next day we use them and put them back on the charger and this time the charger says "Battery not found." I take it all back into the store and am told that "there is nothing they can do." It's my fault that this happened, no wait the settings on the charger were changed (which were setup by the employee and never changed), no wait I just got a bad battery. They couldn't make up their mind. The store manager wouldn't even swap a $50 battery to make things right. They just wanted me out the door after taking $200 of my money and my time. I would rather pay potential customers to go shop on Amazon or eBay than step foot inside this place. Say goodbye to your brick and mortar store with customer service like that. eCommerce is going to replace you in no time. Save yourself the headache and avoid this place like the plague. read more
