We love El Camino Real of Decatur. Probably our favorite Mexican restaurant. But it's been a while since we've visited. It was pretty quiet with few people there. Our server was, as she always is, very friendly. And the food was delicious. Our opinion? The best chips and salsa we've found. So why the four star review? We've noticed something the last three times we've been. My dad always gets the single order of chicken fajitas while Husband and I get Fajitas for two. Tonight confirmed what we've been thinking. My dad ended up with more chicken in his skillet than we did for the fajitas for two. It's a better value to get your own than it is to share. Save money and get more chicken. Place is always clean and service is quick. Definitely recommend with this caveat. read more

We went in late afternoon. There were really no other customers so we got the place to ourselves. We always enjoy the chips and salsa here. We also ordered queso dip that was fantastic! My husband and I had chicken fajitas for two. There was plenty of chicken for the flour tortillas that come with this meal. The rice and refried beans are great! The guacamole is yummy! The whole meal is just delicious! A favorite of ours. Our server did a good job taking care of us. He checked on us, and he refilled drinks, but he didn't pester. Good food overall and very good service always attentive and very professional . The food sometimes is not as hot as it should be but overall it's good. Their carry out service is usually 80% correct but when approached about it it is always corrected. The carry out surcharge is an overkill on the customer. Overall, the restaurants and food are good. The manager is nice. I had an issue with my order, it was incorrect so I called. The waitress who picked up was rude as can be. Telling me I was wrong about how i ordered my food. I wanted soft corn tacos, I ordered the soft option in the app because the picture was a soft corn taco. The only options were soft or crispy. As soon as I walk in she tells me I'm wrong and you have to type "Mexican style" in the preference or notes box. How am I supposed to know that?! There were no directions for that. That makes no sense. Then, I realized they forgot my drink, I went back in. Had an attitude the whole time. Thank god she got her manager or someone and he helped me and was so nice about it. We ate at El Camino Real, for the first time 8-10-24 for lunch. It was very clean in the restaurant including the bathrooms were nice. The tomatillo salsa had excellent flavor and spice over their traditional salsa. All the food was fresh and came out nice and warm. Our waiter was extremely nice, making our experience a pleasure. On first entering the restaurant it has this plain feel to it, feels more like an old penguin point but everything changes when the food comes out, it has authentic taste, I haven't had that in some time and if your extra lucky every once in a while you can hear the cook sing which is quite shocking, he's not bad. Service is always great and food is always delicious with the exception of the occasional stale basket of chips they serve but that's not a deal breaker. Creatures of habit, we always get the same thing and are never disappointed. The dining area is always clean. The one area of improvement would be the hostess. My husband & I made the drive to Decatur for date night last night. We like to try new places, especially Mexican. The salsa was ok. The chips were okay. The drinks were okay. The food was okay. The service was not. We had a waiter who was incredibly rude to not only us, but everyone he served. Tossing baskets of chips on the table. Visibly annoyed by anyone who spoke to him. When my drink was empty I chose not to inconvenience him. He must have noticed because he brought me a full glass, slammed it on the table right in front of me and it nearly landed in my lap. We would never not tip a person adequately but the way he treated people was not okay. I am guessing he was a manager or owner who thought he was "above" serving. This is the 2nd time this week I visited here (in town for business...not a lot of choices!). The first time was good, chicken quesadilla bland, chips and salsa very good, service ok. The second time the steak quesadilla tasted like old meat...hope I don't get sick. The white cheese dip was so thinned it that it ran right off my chip. Salsa, again, was good. Service: seated quickly but they weren't busy, ordered quickly, food arrived quick and hot. But then I never saw my waiter again except to get my bill. I'm a fan. If looking for a place with some good Mexican fare, stop in! Just stopped by this evening for dinner. Everything was delicious. Our party of six was promptly seated and were given chips and salsa right away. Our food was served hot and our service was good - as it has been in the past. After multiple visits we are still coming back and will continue to do so. I enjoy the fajitas Acapulco. Wall traveling through I decided to stop at this Mexican place with the hope I would have nice surprise. The salsa started out better than average with fresh cilantro and your average basket of chips. Then my chili rellenos came and that's where the disappointment started. The race was typical Americanized Mexican rice which was dry and the refried beans tasted like a can and were dry as well. The real a nose had humongous amount of sauce on the top in the center was a watery cheese filling with half of one really know still cool to the touch. The chili itself was really quite tasteless. On the positive side the staff was very friendly and pleasant. I hope there are some better items on the menu as I would consider returning just because of the staff. read more

If u like food that tastes like its from a can this place is for u. My grandma has rheumatoid arthritis and can't open her jar of salsa so she loves this place. The salsa has all the ingredients ground to a watery consistency. I've read the other posts about this place and have to shake my head. I LOVE Tex/Mex and this place is ok at best. Love El Camino! I always go here whenever I visit my family in Decatur. The food is delicious and the service is awesome. I went once around 8:30 and I swear my food came out within 5 minutes of ordering. It's not always going to Brooke that, but they are normally quick with their serving. They also make sure you have everything you need throughout your meal. I always get some type of quesadilla. I got the Quesadilla Suprema and Quesadilla Tapillas?? I don't quite remember the names, but I love them. My sister gets the brother pizza which is huge. My mom always gets chili rellenos which have the perfect amount of spice. Thought I would give this place a second chance. Boy was I wrong it was worse than the first time. I had the Carnitas they were so dry I couldn't eat them. Traditional Carnitas are cooked in lard. The manger told me they do not cook them in lard well then they are not Carnitas they are just boiled pork shoulder. Very dry and bland. I will never go back. You would think after the review this place got in the Journal Gazette they would learn not to serve dry food. read more
