Ill always have some type of bias opinion when it comes to Mexican food. I grew up with homemade Mexican food and it's hard for me to find good restaurants. The first thing as soon as we walked in is the smell of fabuloso or whatever they use, it smelled strong enough to were I could taste it. This for me is a negative (if i was alone, i would have walked out) but my friend choose this place. I ordered a combination plate with a chicken hard taco, the shell was NOT homemade. Had a cheese enchilada, tortilla was hard to cut through, im used to soft corn tortilla where the fork can cut right through. Also had a stuff cheese chili poblano, it was OK, it was not chille relleno im used to. The red sauce was good. But the one thing I was shocked at, is the combo plate didn't come with rice and beans. The menu is somewhat misleading when reading it. I mean we at a Mexican restaurant, I've never not had rice and beans with a meal. The chips and salsa was good. My friend had a margarita that tasted like a virgin margarita. She did say her ceviche was OK. The young lady from Venezuela who helped us was nice, professional and informative. El Campesino is a good, authentic Mexican restaurant. The workers are always very friends and the food comes out really fast. It is kid friendly with really large booths and high chairs available. My most recent time here my group started out with the queso. It is not a very good queso. It lacks flavor and is super runny. For my meal I had the fish tacos, which were good, but not great. Sticking to the combo meals is the way to go here I think. My wife's enchiladas were delicious, as was the stuffed poblano pepper. For my son we tried ordering black beans, but was told They don't have black beans. This seemed odd for a Mexican restaurant. read more

The waiter was quick and efficient while also being polite and great at his job. The cheese dip was some of the best I've ever had at any restaurant. Took my niece and nephews here for dinner - made it their choice. They are in a newer location room the last time we went there ... it's been a few years. Lots of parking and restaurant was clean. My only issue was it felt extremely rushed - like they wanted to turn the table quickly even though it was not that busy. From the time we sat down - to the time the bill came - 25 min. During that time we had queso and quac ... and it seemed a few min went by and poof ...our entree came. We ate and our waiter was right there to clear plates and asked if we would like dessert and poof .. fried ice cream was in the table. Great food and great service! Our server was very attentive and took our orders immediately, and our food came out very quickly. The portion sizes are large (and the margaritas are, too)! I loved my chicken salad. They did not skimp out with the chicken at all, and it was so flavorful, it didn't even need dressing. To our surprise, they also go all out for birthdays! Our server gathered the other servers, and they came over singing and plying instruments, while giving the birthday girl a sombrero to wear. Something is not right with their sauces lately. The salsa, the verde, and the red sauces-all were thin and tasted like colored water. Our Chiles Poblanos had no cheese inside and the egg coating tasted like French toast mixed with dirty grease. What happened to this place??? It used to be so great-so craveable & enjoyable. Aha 1 positive note- the shredded beef was tender. I hope they read this and start making things the way they used to. It's been off for a while, but this was the worst. Two of the combination platters had cold food. The shrimp tacos had maybe 2 small shrimp in each and were greasy-definitely not worth the cost. Have eaten here many times over the years and feel like the food quality has really gone down. read more

We are from Arizona so we were up for some Mexican food. Well we did not get it from here. Our experience was shall we say poor. First we where sittedt by a large table that was having a birthday party for one of their kid. The kids were not bad but they were kids making noise. We could have been set across the room it was not busy at all. Then our food! It was as bland as could be and really tasteless. No cheese on anything but some for the taco that also was the same. We were very disappointed in the meal. I realized this is not Arizona but this was not real Mexican food There was some positive through. The server was good and the chips and salsa were also good. Over all we will not come back. Maybe we can find a real Mexican restaurant! read more

The worst restaurant in the world! Nothing is authentic about this place. The food is more or less Taco Bell in a more nicer place. First, this is not authentic Mexican food. I believe that these folks are from another latin country other than Mexico. How do I know this? I lived in Central California for 30 years and ate at Mexican restaurants all over the state. I ordered the chili relleno with a soft taco. They did not use the right type of pepper. It looked like a small sliver of bell pepper. The meal was 95% ground meat with the rest being inedible starches. The only thing that I ate was the chips and salsa. I threw the rest in my garbage can at home since this was a takeout order. What a waste of $17. Never again. read more

El Campesino's food is hit or miss. The service, however is a hit every time. The staff is so friendly and attentive, and the food comes out freaky fast! The fresh chips and salsa are delicious and the home made guacamole is a must have! But unfortunately, the queso was bland and really lacking flavor. I got the fish tacos and really loved them! I needed to add some salsa and hot sauce to get that Mexican heat, but all in all I thought they were great and will order them again. You get 3 tacos for $13 and that comes with rice and beans. My friend had the chicken fajitas. I didn't try them, but she said they were bland. Just returned from dining at the new location of El Campesino in McMurray. This location is so big, clean, bright and full of friendly and efficient staff. No remnant of the old Max and Erma. Nice long bar with 12 seats and and eight hi-top tables with comfy chairs. Four big TV screens ensure a view from every angle of the place. Main dining room is large and tonight was busy for a Wednesday. Food continues to be good, though the chips could improve. The taste and texture say right out of the bag. Easy access in and out with tons of easy parking. Good move and happy to have El Campesino in my neighborhood. read more

I ordered the chicken enchilada verde which came with three enchiladas and rice. They were packed with chicken but I really didn't get an flavor from the chicken. It was pretty plain. I liked the enchilada verde sauce though. I actually could have gone for slightly more. I love sauce and I don't need to hide that fact! If I order again, I'll try a different enchilada and maybe order some beans along with it. We ordered guacamole too. It was decent but there was a TON of onions in it. Maybe a little too much. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in to El Campesino. The staff is friendly and polite and seated me immediately. The menu has several gluten free options. I had the chicken with vegetables (Pollo Gringo) and it was delicious. Their rice is amazing. I also had the chicken soup, which is spicy and perfect if you need something to clear your sinuses. Although I live within walking distance of the restaurant, this was my first time dining there. Mexican food is not my favorite cuisine: I do not care for refried beans, guacamole, or pico de gallo, but there is plenty here for diners like me, even french fries for my American food-oriented stepson. First, the atmosphere of the restaurant is outstanding. It is brightly lit, comfortable, and attractive. Meals begin with a generous portion of complimentary warm chips and sauce, so much that we had chips to take home. One facet which enhances comfort is the layout: lots of room between tables and booths. Our service from Roberto L. was efficient, courteous, and pleasant. Our food and beverages were enjoyable. Horrible food, nice waiter. Arrived at 2:25 for a late lunch. Saw they had lunch specials until 2:30, asked if it was still valid, and was told it was. Menu was photocopied (which I appreciate in these Covid times, but was dark and very hard to see), and took me a minute to adjust my eyes to the light and read it. At 2:32, opted for one of the lunch specials, and was told they were no longer available. Grrr..fine. Ended up ordering a dinner combo meal (Enchilada, tamale, burrito), which according to the menu was supposed to come with rice and beans, and a Chili Relleno add-on. When the meal arrived, no rice, no beans. Asked if there were coming and was told they were not included. Fine, I had a lot of food anyway, and the main reason I was here was the Chili Relleno. The Relleno was a boiled Green bell pepper, cut in half, with ground beef and watery cheese sauce on top. Not fried in egg and stuffed in a poblano pepper, which actually have flavor. Just watery cheese beef in a half soggy bland bell pepper. The food overall was a half-step above Taco Bell. The meal came to $30 with tip. I took half home because it was so expensive. Heated it up later, took a bite. The taste of sadness filled my mouth. Threw it away. I've eaten at other El Camposinos before, and the food was always decent. Nothing to write home about, but satisfying. It is what it is. Trying not to be too harsh (and failing miserably) because they are open during a difficult time, but this was my first foray out to a restaurant since the pandemics started, and..well...Needless to say I won't be back. Ever. I didn't make a fuss about the 2 minute "late" lunch special. On some places overriding the computer can be a hassle, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I went at a time that wouldn't be crowded on purpose. Service was fast (primarily because everything was pre-cooked and microwaved), the waiter was friendly, and the chips as always were solid. Been anxiously waiting for this place to open for a few weeks now. First off, the place is decorated beautifully, and the seating is very comfortable. That's where they earned the one star from me. The food is extremely over priced, I ordered a bean burrito, a bean tostada, and a side of rice and for my daughter a side of French fries. I love this place! It's such a cute go-to when you're craving Mexican food in the area. It has such a friendly staff and they're always so quick! The fresh chips and House-made salsa is always waiting for us as soon as we sit down! Also, their salsa is delicious! It's not as chunky and has sort of a lime hint to it - it's just so original. I typically order the shrimp fajitas (I believe) and it comes with all the fix-ins on a sizzling dish of cheese - veggies, refried beans, lettuce, shrimp (obviously) and a handful of warm and fresh tortillas. Now, I'm not a bean person whatsoever, but I could eat an entire plate of El Camp's refried beans! They're more on the sweet side and don't have a weird texture! This time around, I was craving a smothered burrito and boy, did I make a great choice! I ordered the Burritos Tipicos, which is 2 burritos in a warm torilla with shredded beef, refried beans (YAS), topped with lettuce and guacamole (no, it's no extra here!), swimming in a puddle of nacho cheese (not the kind you buy from the grocery store, I promise). LISTEN, it sounds like a mess, but it'll go above and beyond your expectations. And most importantly, the food is not pricey for what you get.
