We had gotten up really early and hiked all day in the area. By the time we got back to our hotel, we were really hungry! We looked for a good Mexican restaurant and El Campestre popped up in our search. It didn't have many reviews b/c it has not been open that long, maybe 6 months or so?? At any rate, it was close to our hotel so we opted to try it. It did NOT disappoint!! DELICIOUS!! I had a carne asada burrito, the best I've had in quite some time, the red sauce was amazing and made in house. My partner had a chili verde burrito and he said it was very tasty. The chips and salsa were freshly made, the service was excellent and attentive. We didn't have any cocktails but there is a full bar. Both of us highly recommend this establishment!! read more

How fun to discover a new Mexican restaurant in Cortez after being here for two years! The food here is perfectly spiced-- flavorful and savory but not too spicy for gringos.. If you want more heat, they can add it. (They make a habanero sauce for the staff that they are happy to share .) We had the shredded beef tacos, which were delicious, cheese enchiladas, also delicious, and the chili relleno, which was perfectly prepared. A savory, tender fish taco rounded out the meal. One thing I particularly noticed was that the oil for frying was fresh. I hate going into a place and smelling rancid oil. Finally, the salsa was exceptional. We decided to try El Campestre based on the reviews and I'm so glad that we did so. This food at this place was amazing! I had the enchiladas verde....the tomatillo sauce was so fresh and tasty. Excellent food and service. I am visiting Mesa Verde and was craving a good quality meal. This is a small family run restaurant. The salsa was sooo good and fresh. The tortilla chips nice and dry - not greasy. I ordered the enchiladas mole with rice and beans. The chicken inside the enchiladas was good quality and flavorful on its own. Nicely spiced but not too salty. The mole sauce was excellent too. All the flavors were subtle yet verrry savory. I am from Los Angeles and have had tons of Mexican food but can honestly say I wish this restaurant was in my neighborhood- the food is that good! It's pretty ok. I don't know if they made changes or what. I went here for fish tacos because I read a good review. But the fish tacos I got, 3 for $16, no sides, no rice and beans, pretty small and were made from of tilapia. it's my understanding tilapia is farmed and imported from Vietnam and maybe other places, but it is farmed in unsanitary conditions. I ordered more tacos because I was hungry. The birria tacos were ok and I got a taco Tuesday order of pork tacos as well that were small and kinda dry. Maybe they got new cooks or new people there because I read some good past reviews. We were one of three tables and got no table service after the food was brought out. No refills. No napkins. No how's it going. This is just basic stuff but I can't recommend it and I don't know how they have a 4.9 out of 5, unless something changed since then. After three days of mediocre food and bad service in Cortez, Co we went to El Campestre to eat dinner. Great service and the Asada tacos were excellent. My wife had 2 chicken Chipotle enchiladas and they were great, bean dip is normally OK every where. But here it had a ton of flavor, if were ever back in Cortez we will stop in. read more

After eating at every Mexican restaurant in Cortez this is by far my style Mexican food. I tried the three plate with enchilada, tamale and chile relleno all were good. Salsa had a nice heat to it.
