The food here is fantastic. We started off with an ice cold Modelo and tamales - always a good test of a Mexican restaurant for me. It was big, plump, moist and stuffed with delicious pork. It was also plated nicely, showing the cook's pride in the food. Next we had the chicken flautas, chicken tightly rolled into a tortilla and fried crispy, but not greasy. Also played nicely with lettuce, pico and guacamole. It came with 6 flautas we shared. Our final choice was 2 tacos - one chicken & the other steak. Loaded with meat, pico with some nicely sautéed onions on the side, all served up on two corn tortillas, one white and the other blue corn, a nice change-up. The table service was friendly, the beer cold (Mexican and domestic choices by the bottle), the presentation was great and the food both generous and delicious. The food was not authentic and flavors were off. Nothing was spicy, even drowned in "hot sauce". The menu items sounded good, but in delivery were flat. It felt like they were just trying to be a little "fancy"-maybe to justify a larger price for mediocre and awkwardly arranged menu items. Really enjoyed brunch/lunch here. I had fajitas and hubby had Huevod Rancheros. Food was well spiced and plentiful. The restaurant was cute with good lighting and wall art. The guacamole is delicious and the three sauces that come with the crunchy tortilla chips are fantastic! We added the cilantro sauce to the guacamole and it was amazing. This is an authentic Mexican restaurant, not the typical Tex-Mex Americanized Mexican restaurant, in a strip mall in Warrenton, Or - near Astoria. The food is excellent and it feels like you are in Mexico. It's all freshly made and doesn't come out in 2 minutes like so many Mexican restaurants. It also doesn't come drenched in so much cheese that you can't see or taste the food. The owner and his family are pretty much the staff and cooks and they do an amazing job. On the outside this place might not seem like much of a catch, but the inside is beautiful! Our food was absolutely amazing. We got the fajita special, which was seasoned very well. The steak, chicken, and shrimp were all cooked well. Most importantly, the staff was fantastic! They came to our table multiple times to see if we needed anything. Got us more water, more chips, and asked if we needed more tortillas for our fajitas. Overall great stop on our road trip! Obviously a family-owned and operated establishment, all the staff were friendly and attentive. The food and service were both excellent. The ubiquitous "order by number with rice and beans" menu items were nowhere to be found, replaced instead by a modest selection of hand crafted plates, each with their own unique flair. With an upscale presentation and flavors to match, one might expect a hefty price tag as well, but the prices were extremely reasonable. My husband and I will definitely be back! read more

You might be tempted to go somewhere and sit on the water when you're staying on the Oregon coast, but you would be missing out on amazing meal. El Catrin is some of the best Mexican food I'd ever had. The tacos are all amazing my group sampled a bunch, my personal favorite was the pastor. But really you can't go wrong with any of them. Tamales and flautas are also super favorable and quite a deal at 3.50 and 9.50 respectively. Really don't get caught up in the atmosphere of the coast, instead spend your evening in a shopping center having great homemade Mexican. read more

Only two days open and our first meal / experience was beyond awesome! We have been driving by daily waiting for the paper to come down from the windows. Are they open?...Damn. (Peek at the hair salon next door to be blown away by his skills there too). Catrin and his wife are an amazing team. Order / Pay at the counter and be seated on the handmade tables and chairs. It is like being on the Mexican Coast. This Sunday was crowded. Our arrival took the last table (a good sign after two days of being open). Our food was brought out quickly. All hands were on deck and it was relaxed and under control for the full house. Hands down the best tamales that I have ever had!! Big, flavourful, well presented, and sooooooooooo good. Rice is to die for as well. Tacos were very good as well. In my opinion, a bit pricey but they do come with a small cup of awesome beans. Tamale prices were cheap compared to other places and of superior quality. We split 4 tamales, 2 tacos, rice and beans and walked out for just over $23. Filled to the brim with Mexican goodness. No Tex-Mex crap here. This is the real deal. Mexican sodas, fountain drinks, horchata, etc. No iced Tea (but I will pester them). So stuffed!!! Be sure to check out Emiliano's Hair Studio next door. (review will follow after I take my mum there). Beautifully decorated and offering hair services, high end Italian sexy shoes, handbags, jewelry, and much more!! Being from southern California, this restaurant was a bit of a surprise for us, because it's not truly "Mexican" cuisine that we are used to, it seemed like more of a restaurant with both Peruvian and Mexican food. Having said that, it was a GOOD surprise! While my sons enjoyed some traditional carne asada tacos topped with pico de gallo and a cubed pork burrito (my son had asked for carnitas (shredded pork) and received cubed pork burrito filled with cabbage and a sour cream, pinto beans and cheese), I had the almond chicken, which was a butterflied and grilled chicken cutlet smothered in a chipotle cream sauce, topped with sautéed mushrooms and slivered almonds, served with green rice and corn tortillas. The rice was amazing, and I wish I would have swapped the tortillas out for more rice. The chicken was incredible too. We also ordered horchatas, which are made in house, and are delicious. Just enough cinnamon and the perfect amount of rice grit at the bottom to taste authentic. A little too sweet for me, do I have the rest of mine to my sons. Stopped in here craving some fajitas and chips and salsa. That is not at all what we found, and thank goodness for that. Apart from some fish tacos I once had at a road side shack in Baja, Mexico, this is best mexican fare I've ever had- hands down. The flavors were rich on spice without being HOT, and everything was made fresh to order. We had the flautas, burrito, and enchilada. I cleaned my plate to an embarrassing level. The store itself was clean and fresh and the service was friendly, prompt, and professional.
