This place meets all expectations! They deserve every star from everyone. They are all about flavor profiles and deliciousness. Between the four of us we had tamales, enchiladas, chicken, steak, fish tacos and chilaquiles plus cilantro margaritas (which are made to order, not frozen style)! Everything was spot on and beautiful to boot. Our server was helpful, kind and knowledgeable as was our chef (she stopped by to see how everything was). We also have big allergies to gluten (& to egg and dairy for a few of us) and had plenty to choose from confidently. Very suitable for allergies (which can be very difficult while traveling!) We bought 10 tacos here, 5 chicken and 5 beef and nachos. The tacos tasted good, but they goofed up and gave us just chips instead of nachos . It was to-go so I didn't find out until we were gone. Bill came to $38.50. $3.50 seems a bit high for a taco, but having lived in California where Mexican food is cheap, good, and everywhere, I'm a little spoiled. Guys were friendly, place was spotless. Absolutely the best food, hands down. Hibiscus margarita, tastes amazing, give it a chance. I thought it would be too flowery, it's not. House made hibiscus tea rounds it out. The regular margarita was down right perfect. Steak fajitas: skirt steak was tender and flavorful. 2 year old ate half of adult serving. Guacamole was great side with house made chips. Tamale! Get one, you won't regret it. Amazing flavor. Chicken Burrito tasted great according to person that got it. No complaints. Staff was extremely attentive, tipped 30%. Manager/ owner was very nice, gave sample of margarita when we mentioned our hesitancy for a particular flavor. If you're looking for a place where the entrees are smothered with cheese and swimming in that tasteless brown Mexican gravy so common to most Mexican restaurants, this is not the place for you. But if you want delicious, freshly prepared food, beautifully plated, and served in a nice, bright and clean environment, El Catrin is the place. We were camping at Fort Stevens nearby and craving some good food for lunch. The reviews led me straight to El Catrin. We started with the chicken Taquitos, then I had the house salad with chicken, and my husband had the fish tacos. While we waited they bought us a plate of freshly fried tortilla chips and a trio of salsas. Unlike your typical Mexican restaurant where they bring you a large basket of chips that you gorge yourself on causing you to lose your appetite, El Catrin brings you a plate which is just enough to truly whet your appetite. The chicken Taquitos arrived and were absolutely beautifully plated. The chicken inside the taquitos was seasoned, tender and juicy. I'm trying to eat more healthily, so I balanced it out with a house salad which had tender chicken and tons of roasted vegetables on top of a nice variety of greens. I ate every bite. My husband really enjoyed his fish tacos. With a few days left in the area, I hope to get back to enjoy some more of the menu. Check out El Catrin. What a find! Delicious, flavorful, the best Mexican food I've had in so long. Homemade tortillas were fresh and wonderful. Homemade chips and three salsas on the table. We are locals and often passed this restaurant by because of its modest exterior. After reading some great reviews, we decided to try it. Very very glad we did. We just tried two of the huevos dishes-- one with green sauce and one with red sauce. I asked for mine to be made with tortillas that were NOT deep fried. My husband ordered his as it comes on the menu- with deep fried tortillas. Both excellent. We experienced very attentive service. My co-worker has recommended El Catrin a few times and I've heard good things about this place and finally made it there for dinner. Food and service were both exceptional. Tried this place today as we've just moved to Astoria and the reviews looked good. While this is a "hole in the wall" restaurant in a strip mall next to a hair salon...it is special. My wife and I visit Mexico once a year and we love the cuisine. It's a pleasure to find a Mexican restaurant that doesn't simply blast the cheese smothered dish with heat and then serve it on a "very hot plate". Everything served to us was fresh. They are cooking right in front of you so there's no sleight of hand. It comes from the hot grill to you. I had the pork enchiladas and it was large and superb. Vegetables (carrots, jicama, and peppers) on the side were crisp, warm, and covered with a wonderful chili rub. This is central Mexican cuisine and is spot on. Wife had a shredded beef taco salad in a fresh taco bowl. Loved it! Emiliano is the owner and spent a lot of time with us explaining the prep and their philosophy regarding cooking these dishes. Happy hour menu looks reasonable and fun. We were too early for that. We will definitely come back here. Food takes a little bit longer but it's worth it. Again, they're not blasting it in a salamander. They're grilling it fresh to order. read more

We love this restaurant. The food is always delicious and the restaurant is clean with welcoming staff. They have a different type of Mexican menu which is fun for a change. Everything tastes fresh and is well presented. They always bring 3 delicious sauces to the table. We like the tamale which is not as dry as some. Often have the empanadas or flautas.
