Hands down our favorite Mexican food in Astoria. Also, the best margarita in town as well. They certainly do not use a margarita mix, which tends to be too sugary and artificial tasting. If you are looking for a massive plate of enchiladas with canned sauce and a margarita bigger than your head that tastes a lot like sprite mixed with tequila, this is NOT the place for you. If you want really fresh, authentic Mexican food and a margarita made from scratch, I would recommend going here. read more

Very nicely done interior. The bathroom was spotless. Our server was very friendly and suggested the Almond Chicken with Green Rice special. I took her advice and my daughter ordered the Chicken Enchiladas. They were both delicious. The pickled vegetables that came with the enchiladas were an excellent surprise. The chicken leg served on the side as well as the enchiladas were as good as I've ever had. The special was amazing with a delicious chipotle sauce. The chef came out to check on us and the service was excellent. We finished with Chocolate Flan which was delicious. This place reminds me of the food from Cabo San Lucas, authentic and delicious. We went to this place because the Mexican place we really wanted to go to wasn't open on Sunday's. The food here was a little bland and just ok. Took a while for us to get our drinks and chips/salsa. The chips and salsa was a small handful of chips on a small plate, not enough for 3 people. The salsa was a selection of 3 liquid salsa, not very flavorful. Would have preferred some real salsa. Not a lot to choose from if you are vegetarian. I asked for the quesadilla but with no meat, all I got was a plain cheese quesadilla with none of the sides like pico, sour cream or guac that normally come with it. The service was okay, a little slow. Took a long time to get our food, they said they were backed up but there were lots of empty tables. Probably won't go back. read more

When we went recently, I asked the waiter/ bartender/ owner of he could make anything vegan besides a burrito! He gave me some delicious options. Still need to try vegan mole and fajitas. Have been watching this site and waiting for it to open to see if it was better than the place in downtown Warrenton (not difficult, imho). Well, it is fantastic! The ingredients are VERY high quality and Enrique (Kiki) is eager to please. When he said they had flautas (a corn tortilla rolled around a filling and then deep fried) with the usual beef or chicken, I asked if he ever made cheese flautas. I explained that I used to get them decades ago at a restaurant in Berkeley and that I understood they could be difficult because the melted cheese would tend to leak out while they're frying. While Enrique had never made them, he was up to the challenge and said he had the perfect cheese, a hard cheese that should be able to withstand the deep frying. He made some and they were PERFECT! Their presentation was also special--it included guacamole and pickled veggies. I'd never had pickled potatoes before, and they and the carrot sticks were delicious and so obviously fresh. My dining companion had the tamales and they also were the highest quality. Then we tried Enrique's special Choco Kiki flan for dessert and it also was fantastic! Enrique explained that his flan had more cream cheese than eggs and, for us, that was a really good thing. It tasted like a very flavorful cheesecake, like a Snickers bar w/out the peanuts--it was layers of chocolate and plain flan drizzled with caramel sauce and topped with whipped cream that was obviously made in store, not from a can. Enrique explained that they make their own chorizo in-house so it's not greasy, and that their overall focus is on being innovative with quality ingredients and authentic Michoacan components (e.g., the pickled--vinaigre--veggies) when they fit. We will def be back to try more menu items, such as the mole and the fish tacos, and I'll DEF have the cheese flautas again!! So glad to see this quality Mexican restaurant in Warrenton. read more

I always want to order the chicken and rice dish with cream sauce and bacon but every time I try something new, I'm delighted at the fresh, well seasoned dishes coming from the open kitchen. Skip all the other Mexican restaurants in the area. We've tried them and Tacos El Catrin is the best! Almond chicken is delicious and the beef enchiladas were unique, but SO good! You won't be disappointed! Try a glass of horchata! read more

I was raised in New Mexico and believe the best Mexican food in the states is there. I was skeptical when entering this restaurant. We were expecting a taco shop, but this was a restaurant. Simple menu claiming gourmet Mexican cuisine. So not a taco shop or typical Mexican menu. Decided to try something different, almond chicken (always thought almond chicken was Asian food) They brought out small bowl of chips (used to basket of chips) with 3 choices of salsa. 2 of them were really good and spicy other was a creamy avocado, which was great on my greens. Things looking up...then meal came. It was so good. No not like Mexican food I am used to, but still wonderful! My husband did have carne asada burrito that he enjoyed too! Great place to bring a date. Classy setting and the food is AMAZING! It's not your typical Mexican restaurant, but an upscale scene with bar and fireplace. There are varied seating options depending on your interests and the size of your group. We had four people and all said the food was superb. Lots of really complex flavors, and beautiful food presentations. (Try all the sauces.) You can tell these owners really enjoy creating a pleasant dining experience for guests. If you're hungry try the Fajita...I chose shrimp. It was perfectly cooked with veggies in a savory sauce, and a very generous serving. There is no doubt we'll be back! read more

There were not a ton of vegetarian-friendly options near the state park where we were staying and the reviews for this place were all glowing so we decided to give it a try. We stopped in on a Saturday evening, no wait which was nice and they had live music which was an added bonus. Our drink order was taken quickly and brought out right away, but we waited over 30 minutes for our food. They brought some chips, but it was a small bowl with about 6 chips in it for our family of four. Have you ever seen two boys eat? The boys were getting cranky and hungry, but finally, the food arrived. One table got up and left after waiting for someone to come by and get their order. Maybe it was an off night? The food though was great. I had a taco salad and the ingredients were all fresh. There was no kids menu, so we had the boys split a cheese quesadilla, but they were hungry afterward. Often when we get their own they don't finish, so we thought we would give it a try. Failed of course. Waiting to get the waitresses attention for our check was another waiting game. Seeing a smile just once from her would have been nice too. The older gentleman (who may be the owner) did tell us thank you as we left. He seemed to be very nice. The food was good, but it was not enough to make up for the service. I am glad the locals seem to love it. read more

Went for the first time last night. Food was good. Had a caddy of spices, so that nice. Friend ordered talames and mole. I had tortilla soup. The tamales were nice and hot and came unwrapped. My soup was super hot (tempature) but really good. The dishes had nice presentation and the wait staff was very pleasant and checked in with us twice. read more

NOT GOOD! Used Yelp reviews & so disappointed. Some of poorest excuse for Mexican food we've encountered on our travels. Even iced tea was not normal iced tea. Fatty carne asada was a bummer. Burrito had no sauce or cheese on it .. just lots of dry tortilla. Courtesy chips were fried flour tortilla pieces & salsas were watery & unappealing. Pinto beans too much garlic for me to eat. Maybe trying too hard to be gourmet place when all we wanted ordinary Mexican food. Even ambiance was lacking to be called good Mexican atmosphere. read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. The Almond Chicken was a mouthgasm. It came with this little cup of rice. It looks innocuous and melts in your mouth with flavors of cilantro. Their margaritas are top notch. I had the blue margarita which was good but the cilantro margarita is a bit spicy and out of this world dangerous. So good. We then tried their flan which is thick creamy and delicious with a dollop of cream and strawberry compote. The second time we had their special: Chile Relleno with shrimp and pomegranate. It was sooo divine. I am too full and happy to keep writing but you need to come here and eat delicious food. Bring your friends and family. Friday nights they plan to do salsa dancing and Saturday live music. Soon they will add TVs and billiards. But the food.... you must support them! read more

Surprisingly refreshing! My husband and I stopped by for dinner and we were pleasantly surprised. I was getting my haircut next door and I decided to stop here for lunch afterwards. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted and seated. The menu is simple and I was surprised on how inexpensive everything was. Although, not everything on the menu is served with sides. I ordered a tamale and two chicken tacos and they arrived very quickly. Everything tasted so fresh and I was presented with an array of different salsas/sauces. For the price and the quality of the taste, Tacos El Catrin can not be beat. I can't wait to come here again and try some more of their delicious food! read more

Great stop for tacos on the way back to Portland after a day at the beach. Great friendly service! Only thing I would have asked for differently is to hold the diced tomato on my tacos but the meat was seasoned perfectly. I had chorizo and carne asada and Mrs Fox had chorizo and chicken. The food was good, but they are VERY stingy with refilling drinks. You get one with no refills and the owner gives you attitude about it. I wouldn't go back there due to the sheer attitude we were given when asking for a refill. Their food is quite expensive as well. A bit overpriced. Their drinks are $2.50 with no refills. Pretty ridiculous. Also they have no kids menu. When the family next to us asked about one the owner gave major attitude to the family. Not a family friendly place. Also when you use their restroom you will see there is a hair salon entrance that is wide open. Seemed a bit gross having a hair salon openly connected to a place preparing food. read more

What an amazing surprise... we loved the tamale w pork; the enchiladas were much different, and much better, than I expected (go w shredded beef). While the strip mall setting lowered my expectations, I was proven wrong. Very nuanced flavors, a chef who is paying attention to detail (even the plating and garnish was well beyond the Mexican places we find in the foodie Mecca of portland).
