This gem is tucked away in the outskirts of Philly. Super random find, but O-M-G, they have some of the best tasting tacos I've ever had! El Changarro is tucked away in the Jefferson Ward Shopping Center Plaza. It doesn't stand out at all; almost like a hole in the wall kind of restaurant. When you walk in, the mini grocery market may throw you off. The restaurant is actually in the back of the market. Makes it feel authentic, honestly. You place your order at the counter & they bring it to your table. Strange because you actually pay after you're done your meal, so you'll have to go back up to the counter to pay. My BF, friend, & I ordered a chips & guacamole in addition to a variety of tacos. The guacamole tasted fresh & delicious. As for the tacos, we had the Bistec (steak), Al Pastor (spicy marinated roast pork), Tinga (shredded chicken), & Chorizo (Mexican sausage). They were all delicious! My favorite was the Al Pastor & Tinga. All the tacos we've had were flavorful & very mouthwatering to eat, I tell ya! Definitely a gem indeed. read more

The food here was the best. I came for lunch time and the three women were taking orders and making the food. They did not know English well so I broke out my Spanglish and ordered 2 tamales. The tamales were so good. They were soft and delicate but filled me up all for $5. The animal fat it's cooked with made it deliciously greasy. It came with a really good green sauce that was not too spicy for me and juiced up the tamale when you put it on top. I will definitely be back to try more dishes because out of the 2 types of tamales I've had in my life, I liked these the best. read more

El Changarro was my first Yelp review, and I'm still glad I stumbled upon it. This place does not serve the best Mexican you will ever taste. But, for what it is, a totally authentic taqueria in the middle of the suburbs, it earns five stars. The meats to get are the al pastor, with its richly spiced chunks of pork, and the carnitas, which boast a great texture combination of fork tender shreds and crispy bits. The lengua and chorizo are serviceable, though not quite as good as the aforementioned porcine delights. I usually get the fairly good double-wrapped tacos, but the sopes here are killer, as they're made entirely from scratch and have a great texture and corn flavor. The burritos are also decent but a little too heavy for my tastes. I've still never had a torta, but they look delicious. The grocery store section is amply stocked with decent quality tortillas, a broad selection of dried chiles (served out of trash cans, but don't be put off by that), and other Mexican goodies that you can't get at the nearby Giant. The menu accommodates gringos better than before without sacrificing authenticity in the flavor department, and there's always a cook on staff who speaks English. When in Bucks County, the usual choices for Mexican food consist of Taco Bell, Chipotle, and the "On The Border" right by Neshaminy Mall. So when I found this place on Yelp, I drove right down to Street Road and checked it out. When you go to El Changarro, you are first walking through the aisles of a small Mexican grocery store. Ahead of you is the counter, and to the right is a TV that might be playing anything from fútbol and Univisión broadcasts to Family Feud. The food is good. Definitely not the best Mexican I've ever had (this would probably get 3 stars on Washington Ave in Philly, and 2 in the Mission in SF), but let's be honest here. We're in Bucks County, not Baja California. I've come here ~2x and I've ordered the Tacos al Pastor, and then the Pupusas (are these guys Salvadorean?). Both times, the food was great, with all of the accoutrements and sauces you might expect (think radishes, not guacamole). Their pupusas were clean-tasting and not at all greasy. The grocery store's selection is not bad either - I usually end up picking up a package of tostadas and cheese (the selection changes often, and I managed to *not* find queso blanco last time I was there). I wasn't in the mood for the usual cheese steaks, burgers, fries, etc when I got finished playing at Parx this afternoon. So I decided to stop in here for some tacos on my way home. This is my second time eating here, and re food wasn't as good as it was the first time, but still not bad. The store from front to back has plenty of Mexican groceries, snacks, and pastries. The only downside was that even though the menu is in Spanish and English, ordering was a chore.... which made me wonder if I was actually going to receive what I ordered, or what they thought I ordered. Amazing Mexican food. Had their tacos a few months ago and really enjoyed them. I've been meaning to try a burrito from there and it did not disappoint. Amazing authentic burrito with two really good sauces on the side. The hot sauce they give you on the side is HOT but very flavorful. I would recommend this to everyone. This restaurant (food court) is located in the back of a Latino grocery store. The tacos here are good, the standard $2.50 for a taco. However, I was disappointed to see that my favorite lengua taco was $3.50. That is expensive. The meat itself didn't blow me out of the water. But the tortilla itself was delicious. They also have several daily specials and favorites like tostadas. I would be willing to try those when I return. read more

This place was one of those places you really don't want to tell anyone about because you want to keep it your little secret but I thought why not share it with everyone else. Well first off the food is authentic, you have maybe 3 or 4 older ladies cooking in the back, just like grandma does and boy is it delicious. Quite legit Mexican food in the burbs of Philly. Having moved into the area recently we decided to shop at Kohls for some home essentials but the sight of a small "vendy operation" outside what seemed like a Mexican grocery store got us curious to take a sneak peek. To our pleasant surprise, we discovered a restaurant at the back. All of the clientele was Hispanic and we spotted a few individuals eating Elotes (corn on the cob with crema, salt, chili powder and lime juice). It was a Dead Giveaway! Dead Giveaway that this place had amazing food. Dead Giveaway!! We've been here a few times post that day and found the food consistently good. Recommend their Tacos Al Pastor, Carne Asada Burrito, Chiles Rellenos and Caldo de Pollo. It is hard to find a place that makes good Tacos or Carne Asada like the ones you get in Los Angeles but for the area, I'd say they do a fantastic job. Service is courteous but you might face a language barrier if you're not fluent in Spanish. Recommend this bodega/restaurant. read more

This place is tucked back in the store but this section is ever expanding slowly taking over the place. There are lots of options here but I stick with the tacos as I really enjoy sampling different bits of meats and the tacos are the best way to do that. Restaurant was in the back, half dozen tables, with Univision on a large flat-screen. Open kitchen, 2-preparers, giving you a home-cooked feel; people are nice. Lots of menu choices, many looked promising. Mostly hispanic customers, also promising. However, the food was mostly disappointing. I had the Enchiladas with mole (chicken was tough), tortillas tasted flat, good refried beans. My gf had the huarachi, looked good, but it was not very tasty. Strawberry shake was good. $23 total. this place is a great find in bensalem for some solid tacos! it is in the way back of the mexican super market. we ordered TACOS (so many kinds, but i got the carnitas, al pastor, and chorizo, and i recommend all three of them! carnitas is very tender, and the chorizo isn't super spicy at all. they are all very meat packed, and double tortilla-ed. they do NOT skimp out on the lime which i am SO thankful for!! the lime wedges are HUGE, and they give cucumber on the side as well for a great palette cleanser. RECOMMEND out of everything we got), and the GUAC (COMES WITH CHIPS. when you order a side of guac, it means guac and chips! homemade guac is the best, but this one isn't as spicy at all. there is a ton of onion in it, lacking a bit of salt and some type of spicy flavor, but it is still solid and very delicious. the chips are freshly fried, but super oily), and the CHICHARRONES PREPARADOS (this is an amazing snack for the family! so cheap. $5 for a huge plate of fried, very very light flour, with a ton of lettuce, tomato, avocado, and cream. the cream is pretty salty, but the flour just tastes like an airy cracker. great snack. but i dont think we got what was on the menu, because there was no chicharon on it, or salsa). you can ask for the salsa verde and spicy salsa on the side, and they give you a TON. the spicy salsa just gives enough of a kick, but its not too spicy at all. you are able to order and pay after you eat, and there is a sink outside the bathroom to easily wash your hands which is clutch!! and make sure you get some caramel/filled churros on the way out in the front of the market! read more

The people giving this place bad reviews don't understand authentic Mexican food. The food here is spot on authentic. The tacos are excellent. Rice and beans authentic. It isn't the overly flavored stuff you get at the local chain. Authentic Mexican can be a little bland. Use the provided sauces to spice it up flavor it to taste. Otherwise the tastes come from the natural flavors of the meat, the onions, the peppers, the radishes. Recommend the Carnitas Tacos. If you go for the milkshake......it is huge. It is a clean tidy little restaurant in the back of a grocery store. You will get kind service and good "homemade" food at a good value. Came here tonight with my sister. After reading other reviews I knew to expect that it was in the back of a mexican mart, so it didn't throw me off at all. The restaurant area is very clean and decorated in a mexican theme. There were two lady server/ cooks who did speak a little English so it wasn't too hard to order (the menus are in Spanish too) They do not have fountain soda, they have sodas and juices in a refridgerator. I ordered the chicken tinga tostada which came with a spicy but delicious salsa verde on the side, and 2 carnitas tacos. Both were great but the chicken tinga tostada was amazing. I seen some reviews said the food here lacked flavor, well I have no clue what they are talking about. The coke-a-cola in glass bottles was the finishing touch. It was also fun to look around the mart afterwards. And the best part: 1 tostada, 2 tacos, 1 coke =$9!!! Awesome takeout spot!!! read more

This place is awful. I came here on 9/16/16 and I will never be returning. The people who work in the back couldn't speak any English, which wouldn't be a problem if they had listened to the orders themselves in the first place. Not to mention nobody here was even wearing gloves while preparing the food. The food itself was really bland, like it had nothing to it at all. The tortillas were really greasy and the steak tacos that I got had large pieces of fat in it. My boyfriend who got a burrito couldn't even finish it because it was so disgusting. The lettuce inside was so watery he couldn't continue eating. He showed photos of the pineapple drink that is posted on here in the photos and they said they had never heard or seen it before. He got the strawberry milkshake instead and he described it as tasting like nesquick. Similar to the food, it had little to no flavor. I'm really disappointed in the reviews on this page by fellow Yelpers, as it doesn't reflect the quality of this restaurant at all. I would never go here again. I'd rather go to Chipotle.
