We went to El Charro on Harrodsburg Road with a couple of friends. The food was delicious and the portions were large. They also have the best frozen margaritas in town. We appreciate their 2 for one happy hour house margaritas. Service was excellent. It is important to us that the background sounds are not too disruptive because two of us have trouble hearing. The food was just okay it's the first time I had it. The tacos were decent I've had better. They weren't horrible the meat was just kind of overcooked. My son got the fajitas the food came out sizzling hot and it was a little too burnt for my liking. Service and staff were amazing! The restaurant was clean and a nice outdoor area. Finally returned to dine in on a Sunday at 6pm to check out the beautiful new renovation. Definitely a lot more modern. We were seated quickly and service was excellent (the bartender was serving our table). There were several open tables. Thanks to the 2 for 1 margarita special on Sundays, I ordered a frozen mango margarita with a sugar rim. It had a decent amount of alcohol but the mango syrup was super sweet. Maybe the house or another flavor would be better. Our server brought out chips and salsa quickly too. Both were pretty standard and tasted like packaged chips and salsa you can get from the store. Not terrible, just not freshly made or seasoned in a particular way. Ordered the seafood enchiladas for dinner. It came out super fast! But the taste was lackluster too. Other than being lightly salted, there weren't any distinctive flavors. Not even lime or lemon. The tortillas did not taste like they were freshly made (they were definitely packaged) and weren't even warmed up. The enchilada sauce was good and warm but it was the only thing that had any real flavor. Maybe they rely on the sauce to make the rest of it good. All around a pretty dissatisfying meal for me but my bf liked his food (tacos lomo and peach margarita on the rocks). The space is beautiful and the staff are nice. read more

I like the El Charro in Hamburg better. I ordered the steak tacos at this place and the steak was like they just reheated it. I mean I'm just saying it's the same franchise but different location, but the product should still be the same. However the ambience was good and the service was not bad. I'm going stick to Hamburg though because the food is at least hotter and not cold when it comes out and fresh. You should reheat people's food because that's not healthy and I'm paying for fresh food. read more

My husband and I dined around 5pm for our first time at El Charro. We were sat quickly and I ordered a Fresh Watermelon Margarita right away and it was delicious. My husband ordered different flavors of margaritas that he was offered as available margaritas only each time after he picked one our waitress returned to tell him that wasn't available while naming other flavors which also ended up unavailable as well. He ended up also going with a Fresh Watermelon Margarita! Haha They were both strong and delicious. After that everything went smoothly. The restaurant is pretty small but it never felt packed or even busy, though it's pretty bare compared to other Mexican restaurants as far as decor. The food overall was delicious! I had the shrimp tacos and the shrimp had a nice mustard and breading fried coating. Surprisingly everything tasted great together. We had a nice meal at El Charro! read more

Taco Week, so we went to El Charro. The usual chips and salsa came to the table and accompanied our Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita. The salsa wasn't as spicy as I like, but I was hungry. The Margarita had good heat, but they forgot to salt the rim. The taco choice was limited to al Pastor or vegetarian, so you know which I chose. They were tasty and stuffed. I saw this restaurant on Yelp today and had great ratings, so my mom and niece and I decided to check it out. What really sold me was the picture of the taquitos, which is probably my favorite Mexican dish. We both ordered the beef taquitos with rice and beans, added guacamole, pico and sour cream on the side (heads up - all are additional charges). These were, hands down, the best taquitos I've ever had (and I've had a lot). The beef was juicy and flavorful and perfectly cooked. Downside, if you like sour cream with your taquitos, you'll need to buy extra - they give you about a teaspoon of it with the meal. The rice and beans, also, were a very small portion - tasted amazing though! Still not a bad deal for $9.99. The service wasn't great but not horrible -he seemed in a rush, didn't want to be helpful if it meant any extra effort. A guy named Martin cane to check on us at the end, to see if we he could do anything for us before we left, which I thought was super nice. We will definitely be back to order those taquitos again! This place is close to home. We have gone here several times over the years. The last time we went, before tonight, it was sort of meh. Tonight, it was not good. Three of us sat down. They gave us two menus. The chips were tough. We asked the server about happy hour, drinks, she sort of shrugged. No drink menu. So, we didn't order margaritas. Never been to a Mexican place that didn't actively try to sell alcohol. Oh well. I ordered Chile Verde. Spouse ordered Carnitas. Child ordered a burrito and tamale. My chile verde was mostly chunks of fat. They gave me three very tough tortillas. The sauce was okay, beans and rice standard. Not at all spicy as indicated on the menu. My spouse's carnitas were clearly the gristle and fat chunks cut out of larger pieces of pork. Nearly inedible--almost entirely fat and gristle. She ate a bit and gave up. They brought her corn tortillas, she ordered flour tortillas. My child ate about half of her dinner--said the tamale was too rich and the chicken burrito plain and dry. The place can be loud. The after Keeneland crowd was there and super loud (i.e. drunk). Not the fault of the restaurant, necessarily, but my ears were literally ringing when we left, it was so loud. At $16-20 a piece, the pricing isn't crazy for food, but definitely high for the low quality we received. Drinks were pricy last time we were there, but I can't comment this time, since we didn't get drinks. Very underwhelming. I see no reason to return. read more

The Hubs had dinner here with friends a few nights ago & thought it was very good, so we went today. He had the Chicken Mole Poblano and liked it OK. Nothing to write home about he said, but OK. I had a bowl of chicken soup which was good, but which came out without much pico de gallo and completely devoid of avocado or fresh cilantro, which really is a must. That sort of left it being just a bowl of chicken rice soup with the faint flavor of far away Mexican spices. Tasty, but still... For entree I had a dish of grilled shrimp & scallops with mushrooms, onions & tomato, with sides of rice & refritos. When I placed my order I asked the waiter to please be sure to have the shrimp & scallops cooked well done. Some time in the last few years it got to be some kind of a Class 'C' Felony to actually cook shellfish. Heaven forbid it should be opaque! It's got to still be translucent or it's a crime. This is strictly a personal preference, but I like my fish cooked through, with some of that lovely "golden brown delicious" on the outside and made a point to ask for it to be cooked that way. Lot of good it did me. The shrimp & scallops were still translucent. In addition to the undercooked seafood, the dish was very bland, and the shrimp, while a long way from having a "fishy" odor, did smell a tiny bit "shrimpy". The scallops were not the larger sea scallops, which you'd expect at a restaurant, but the thimble sized bay scallops. They, too, did not seem to be grilled. No char or browning on them & they, too, remained translucent. Since dinner was a bust, I ordered a chicken tamal just to see. It came out on its own, no sauce of any type. The masa was ok, but the chicken filling was way too spicy hot for me. Hubs thought it was fine, but this from a man who orders his food Thai Hot! But hot or not, a little salsa verde or something would have helped it out a little. One more complaint and I'll stop whining. The restaurant was essentially empty, yet when a family with 2 shouting toddlers and a baby came in, they seated them right next to us. Please, people! Not everyone thinks screaming toddlers are cute. Just sayin'... read more

Food: We ordered El Pastor Tacos and the Seafood Enchiladas. Both were delicious and had generous portions. They also gave us complimentary chips and salsa and continuously refilled it for us. Service: Prompt and friendly. We had 4 different servers check in on us to see if we needed anything, even though they had a full house on Father's Day. Ok, I've been a fan a Mexican cuisine for more years than I can remember. The Midwest is filled with your choice on every city block. I will have to say this is one of the very best I've had. I cannot speak to the true authenticity, but I can say for the typical Mexican-American fair, El Charro is on the top of my list. I have ordered takeout three times now, twice through Grubhub, and once through the restaurant. All has been the same and high quality. I highly recommend the gauc as it's homemade. Several other items have been delicious as well. I have not had a bad meal here yet. I encourage you to try it. Go check it out! read more

Horribly overpriced for what you get. Beware. We came in for lunch and spent $35 for 2 people. They charge $12 for a shrimp quesadilla that you can make at home for $3. It had maybe 4 small shrimp total and was just tortilla, cheese, and a few shrimp. What a disappointment. Guacamole was good but was $5 for a small ramekin worth of the dip.
