My brother kept telling me I needed to try this local Mexican spot, and I'm so glad I finally did. I started with the fresh guacamole served with crispy tostada chips, then got the pork tamales covered in melted cheese, a shredded beef taco, and finished with a slice of tres leches cake. Everything tasted so authentic and full of flavor. I also loved the environment and decorations throughout the restaurant- it felt warm, welcoming, and very true to the culture. The only downside is that it is a little pricier than some other Mexican places I've tried. My meal came out to around $47 just for me, but honestly I didn't mind because you can tell the quality is there and I'm always happy to support a local business and the people behind it. read more

This is a cozy place to get real homemade Mexican food. Maria was very kind and nice. I really liked the shop decor and layout because it's so different to what we're used to. I got the chicken tamale with cheese and it was the best tamale I've ever had. I also got chicken and mole. I stopped in at 2pm on a Saturday. I was the only person besides the owner. The decor inside is not your traditional restaurant layout but what I've seen in Mexico where there a hand crafted items, piñatas, and some tables for eating but have no napkins or hot sauces on them. They are bare. I ordered from a very limited menu, jalapeño and bean tamales, refried beans and rice. The flavor of the meal was excellent. The tamales were wrapped in the corn husk and she did a great job heating them up, they were very moist. The beans served on the side were very dark brown. Almost like black beans but not. The rice was not your typical Mexican rice but a much finer and smaller grain, almost like basmati rice. Great flavor in everything. My only complaint and this is just me. OUTSTANDING!! I pass by every day on my way to work but I thought I'd finally stop by and see how Maria's was... it was phenomenal. These are the best tamales I've ever had and the best guacamole I've ever had and I don't say that lightly. Maria was so sweet and helped me decide what to order since I had never been before. I love that the inside has all the fun stuff to look at while you eat. And they have jarritos and Mexican coke! Next time I'll have to get the ceviche since everyone is raving about that! I've been to a small town in Mexico, and found an amazing small restaurant that felt like I was in someone's home. This, this is that. Maria herself, and perhaps alone, makes your food and serves it to you. We had an amazing molé chicken that I would put against any I've ever had. You can tell she puts love into that sauce. We also tried a jalapeño and bean tamale with cheese along with a roasted salsa. Delicious. It's a place unlike any you've ever seen. Interesting, quirky, colorful. An unusual business. It's a pretty bland stretch of the outskirts of Lexington that they inhabit, but they've decorated the heck out of this building. The front serves as a market carrying canned Latin goods and sauces, but most people will come for the tamales. The reason I came is that they offer vegetarian, either jalapeno and bean or jalapeno and cheese. The former still comes with cheese on top, which turned out not to be a little sprinkle but a ton of cheese. It wasn't really what I wanted, but I'm not going to say it didn't taste good. The filling, combined with the spicy salsa on the side delivered the robust flavor mix that I hoped for, and one which is hard to find in this area. They had a variety of sugary beverages and a few other menu options. I wish they did more in some respects, selling fresh stuff (for a place called farm market I didn't see any fresh fruits or vegetables) or having a larger menu. Truly the best tamales and ceviche in the city, if not the entire state. My favorite is the Jalapeño and Cheese with salsa verde. Suggest taking a bunch home. Freezes well. So today is Cinco De Mayo and I thought I would go and splurge on some tamales and tacos at this place. Actually, this was my first visit ever to this place. I always passed by it when going to White Castle or Rally's or Taco Bell since I have resided in Lexington (2009). I went in today and low and behold it was actually open! O_o That is a rarity. First impression was "There is a lot of stuff packed into this place." Then I could make out a woman and I said, "Good morning! Would you have a menu?" The menu was just written on a piece of cardboard. She came over and help me with my order. I stated I wanted one taco and one tamale. She was like "No, you get 4 tacos for $16." O_O I was like "Okay and I will take a chicken tamale." Apparently, one can order single tamales, but you have to order 4 tacos at a time. The total cost came out to like $21.20! That is insane! Shouldn't the item be cheaper if buying in bulk (the tacos?)? I don't get it. Also, why is this place named Farm Market? I feel like it should have a Mexican name like Mi Abuelo's (which I know is taken by a restaurant chain). Perhaps, La Pinata because it is so decorated on the inside. read more

Best tamales in the city. If you're into tamales, you should get over here as soon as possible. I tried both the pork and beef tamales. I prefer the pork, but, to be honest, I always prefer the pork. In tamales, I think it is the best option. So maybe the beef tamales are good, but they are overshadowed so much by the pork in my palate that there is really no other option. They give you an option of cheese covered tamales here. Try it. I didn't think I'd like it, but I did. Definitely worth a try. They also give you an option of salsas that they smother those delectable beasts with. I'd go that route as well. The spicy salsa was not my favorite, but it has a unique flavor and again worth a try. You might like it. Get a couple different types and share! Ancillary findings...look, I came here for tamales and got what I was hoping for. But my daughter went with the chicken tacos. Wow! They are fantastic as well! 12/28/21 Stopped by here with my friend for lunch. Got a chicken tamale and guacamole with chips. Within 5 minutes or so, the food was ready to go. I am not a big fan of tamales, or maybe I've not had a good one before, but their tamales were so good here! The guacamole was one of my favorite ones as well. There are piñatas hanging from the ceiling and all kinds of random tchotchkes everywhere. The women were speaking Spanish to the patron who was speaking Spanish. I wasn't sure if English was okay here so I initially spoke Spanish. This was not necessary. Anyway, the menu is limited. You get four tacos for $16. You can't order in lesser amounts. Mine did not have much meat. You don't get rice or beans or chips. I also ordered a beef tamale ($4), which was small, but good. The food was fine, but I thought it was expensive and would not return. It was not the best I have had, but was decent enough. I wouldn't go out of my way to return. FYI, I'm from NY and we have lots of really good food, so I'm not sure how this would rate if we were comparing hole in the wall taco place to hole in the wall taco place, only in KY. Absolutely love!! This locally owned tamale restaurant is delicious. Everything is cooked to order and fresh. The workers are so nice and welcoming it feels like you're walking into a family home. The lady who was our server (and cook?) was very nice, delivered the food in a kind and timely manner. My only complaint is the pricing. $5 for one tamale is too much regardless of how good it is (unless it's huge tamale, which is not the case here). Maria's serves some of the best tamales I've had, but still. The restaurant was completely empty when I showed up, which is a great shame given the quality of food made here. I think if this place advertised itself better, maybe did some catering, cut the prices (probably to $2.50-3.00 a tamale/taco) would definitely help this business. Loved my first experience at Farm Market! I got a beef tamale and a pork tamale. And they were both delicious! The cheese on top was also fantastic, and I'm not even a fan of cheese! I got my tamales with a side of the spicy salsa which was a little too intense for me, so I look forward to trying the mild next time. Mexican food HEAVEN! I just had the best handmade homemade corn tortilla of my life!!! My only complaint is that I could have eaten too much. Yeah this place is a little divey/authentic.....the food is AMAZING!!! (I believe the restaurant is family owned.) It is delicious and I feel like I am eating history!!! Farm Market boasts "best tamales in town" and I would 100% have to agree! I'd heard great things about this place from friends & on Yelp, and I was excited to find out they had veggie options as well. It seems like FM is mostly used by its customers ordering carry out, but there are a few tables inside the shop, where you can also buy pinatas, and other trinkets. FM is a small brightly painted building on New Circle road near Sams Club. My mom and dined in last week- when we walked in and saw the refrigerators with food/drinks, we weren't sure if you were supposed to take what you wanted and pay at the counter- but an employee soon came out and seated us and brought us menus to order. We both ordered 1 bean and jalapeno tamale and 1 bean taco and split an order of guacamole. The food was amazing! And definitely a great value. I can't wait to go back! read more

I don't think this place is as authentic as what you might read or hear (tamales dont traditionally have cheese). Everything is definitely homemade though, cooked to order, and I appreciate that. It can be cool when someone does their own spin on things like that. The atmosphere is unique for sure, ppl should come here for pinatas and mexican sauces that they sell in the market. Guacamole was good, almost as good as Agave & Rye! I wish they had a bigger menu selection. This place is still as good as I remember! I had a chicken tamale and my husband and I had some homemade chips with an avocado like dip. It was all pretty incredible. The atmosphere is very casual. You have a seat. They take your order. You go to the freezer to serve yourself a soda pop. You use the bottle opener yourself and your food is out pretty quickly. It's quaint and authentic. They promote themselves as having the best tamales in town. So you walk in and it looks like some of the local stores in Mexico. The seating is this rustic wood benches. The menu is short. Once you order, grab a drink off the drink case. So here's the deal: get the tamales. The spicy sauce is a bit spicy and smoky-- if that is your thing. I'm originally from California and now live in the tristate area near Marshall University over 2 hours away. Maria's is just about a block away from the Lexington Peddler's Mall. After shopping I just happened to try Maria's and I haven't looked back. I recently drove up for my birthday just to have these tamales. At this point I have tried them all. There's bean and cheese, jalapeno and cheese, pork, beef and chicken. The option to add additional cheese to the outside is totally worth it. The salsa of choice is on the side so you get to decide how much you want if any at all. My favorites are the salsa verde which is mild and the red sauce which is called spicy but is really some where between a mild and a medium. Both have a wonderful well rounded flavor. Nothing here is spicy for spicy sake. The tamales are moist but still hold there shape. The filling to masa ratio is good. I'm not normally a fan of chicken but tried some of my friend's and even that was juicy and delightful. The bean and cheese was also surprisingly good. It contains black beans with a balanced flavor and pleasant texture (I'm not a fan of the loose refried beans some places use). You could hand me any flavor tamale from here and I would be happy. Although, if I had to choose, the jalapeno and cheese with salsa verde and the beef with red sauce are my favorites. If you are in the area and missing authentic quality Mexican food I highly recommend Maria's Mexican Cuisine. read more

Always in seek of great "holes in the wall" when we're traveling, Farm Market seemed like an ideal choice. It turned out to be over of those meals we'll be talking about to anyone who will listen for a long time to come. It feels so much like similar places we visited while in the Southwest a few years ago - family run, filled with colorful Mexican tchochtches, beautiful pinatas, a few groceries and fresh produce, all for sale at super reasonable prices. We were greeted immediately by an incredibly nice woman who was patient with the newbies. She steered us toward her favorites, and everything came out piping hot as if by magic, five minutes later. Favorite overall dish: jalapeno-cheese tamale topped with (more) cheese and hot salsa. Perfect and filling all by itself, not that we didn't manage to tuck into an order of chorizo tacos (tender, homemade tortillas and the flavorful meat was not too greasy). The pork tamale was also great, but we wished we'd added the cheese and salsa to that choice, too. The fresh Pico/lime wound up on top of everything. Insanely affordable lunch stop for fresh, local Mexican food (definitely try one of the tamales) with an infusion of art. The exterior and interior are a riot of color: from the sunburst yellow paint on the walls to the piñatas hanging from the dining room ceiling.
