I was excited to try El Charro having looked at the menu on a previous trip. The interior is large, and for some reason has arcade games and pool tables. The service is very friendly and fast, but I'm not 100% sure of the veracity of their suggestions after they assured me the pollo campesino was among their favorites. I had the queso fundido and said pollo campesino. The queso tasted purely like white Velveeta, nothing more. It came with no accompaniments, but there were table chips i could dip in it. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. The pollo campesino was nothing I've ever seen in Mexican cooking in my life. Chicken with a cream sauce and mushrooms? Luis was a great server. He took the time to talk to us and recommend a fantastic beer as well as a place to vacation in Mexico. This seems to be the spot for locals to get mexican food. My husband and I stopped in, mostly because we were driven by curiosity to see what sort of Mexican food Lincoln would have to offer. Having tried it, we've concluded it's a decent pitch but nowhere near a home run. Wanting to try as many things as possible, we ordered beef nachos and the 'Mexican combo' - a combination platter that included an enchilada, a chimichanga, and a tostada (along with a side of rice and beans). The combo was a little disappointing. I found it to be a somewhat repetitive iteration of the same three ingredients - tortilla, dry chicken, and cheese. The accompanying rice and beans, too, were underwhelming. We liked the nachos far better, which had a generous amount of well-seasoned beef and thick chips that somehow maintained their crunch under a mountain of cheese. Personally, we found the blanket of cheese to be a little much, but cheese-lovers will have met their match with this order. The highlight of our meal was actually the free chips and salsa. The salsa absolutely slaps, approaching near perfection in texture, spice, and flavor. If we didn't notice the small print on the menu that explains a surcharge for additional refills, we probably would have run up quite the charge on just these. Inside, the restaurant is larger than it looks, and it seems it's got the footprint of two restaurants split by a wall. The first dining room is a little drab and quiet, while the adjoining space is festive with a bar, decorations, and (randomly?) some arcade games. Grateful for something that opened late as we finally arrived to our destination and haven't had anything since 11 that morning. We entered El Charro to be brought over to a table in their back room where games of pool have taken place. The hostess was an interesting character. She guided us to a table and pulled out a chair slowly which kinda looked like she was pulling it out for one of us. Instead, she proceeded to remove the extra seat and place it at a different table. Mind you, this is around 9 pm and there were two or three other groups in this restaurant and over 10 available tables. Not busy at all. She gave my friend a dinner menu and a drink menu and did the same with my boyfriend (at the time) and when she got to me, she had one dinner menu left but then took the drink menu from my friend to give to me. Very odd experience. No drinks for my friend, I guess. Chips and salsa quickly came out and I will say the salsa was pretty good. Smooth consistency AND had a noticeable spice, which I can appreciate. For a table of three, the salsa was maybe filled halfway and we didn't even get a full basket of chips. I mention this because I noticed on the menu that the first round of chips and salsa were on the house but there was a charge afterwards for any additional requests. I had the chicken suiza enchiladas and wasn't sure if it was becuase I hadn't eaten in ten hours, but it was pretty good. I did not like the lack of options in protein and that it didn't come with a side of rice and beans. Prices were kinda expensive with this to consider. We were still in the middle of eating and hardly made a dent into our meal when that hostess made an appearance once again, emerging from the front stand by the entrance. She grazes our table, comes forth, and asked if we need any boxes. We said no, since we were still in the middle of our third bite. It was 9pm, they close at midnight, and another table just now got their food. There was no need for that rush at all. We took our time and finished up our food. After we got the check, we had our card out waiting for our server. Guess who swings by again?! The hostess comes over and asked if we were done with our waters. I was, but out of spite I told her no. Clearing out water glasses should be the last thing you do AFTER the guests leave, am I wrong?! The constant pestering from this hostess who was just supposed to sit customers down really made this such an odd experience. In no way were we lingering longer than normal, we were hungry from a long trip and our stay at the restaurant was no more than 30 minutes. There was no excuse for that hostess to be constantly checking in on us. Overall, salsa slaps, entrees were decent but kinda pricey, and hostess can reevaluate her approach at customer service. read more

The good: the salsa was excellent. They make it a couple of ways, depending on the chef, but for us, it was authentic. My wife had the charbroiled skirt steak. Although it was priced for tourists, it was cooked well, and again, was authentic. I had enchiladas and the red sauce was very mild. The overall taste was on par and met my expectations. The waitress was incredibly friendly and we did not feel rushed. The bad: there isn't anything "bad", however, the atmosphere is confusing. The layout has multiple themes happening. The tables were inconsistently dressed. It's like a restaurant trying to be a bar, nightclub, and arcade. It's as if the owners are trying hard to cater to motorcycle clubs, hikers, and families all at once. The bottom line: if atmosphere is important and dining out is equally experience and taste, you'll be uncomfortable. If you have OCD, you'll really be uncomfortable. If you're looking for great flavors and friendly staff, El Charro won't let you down. I would eat here again and feel comfortable recommending this place. read more

Really shocked we have been sleeping on this place! El Charro is the real deal! Some of the best Tex-Mex I've had, hands down. The Chicken Tinga was amazing, and the Tinga Poblana was packed with flavor (and enough for two!). The complimentary chips and salsa were a great touch. But what really made the experience stand out was the friendly and welcoming bartender - he whipped up some of the best spicy margs I've ever had! This place also has pool tables and an arcade! Can't wait to come back with friends. Don't sleep on El Charro like we did - get here ASAP and enjoy the great service, drinks, and food! read more

I use yelp often to get a general garage of a restaurant mainly based on the photos and the star rating. I haven't however posted a review in years. We almost didn't go to El Charro but there were few options near loon that would satisfy the kids. I honestly was pleasantly surprised by the great service, table side guacamole, outdoor dining, and generally cleanliness inside the restaurant. (Where we stayed a couple weeks ago - just before leaf peeping craziness) Easy walk albeit around construction We were welcomed warmly and seated quickly! I got the chicken flautas - the meat at the ends looked a bit charred but it was so flavorful. Sometimes chicken flauta meat is dry and stringy. This was not. Tortillas were yummy. Beans, rice and guacamole also very good. I also got a watermelon margarita. Perfection. My husband got a chicken burrito. He called it "very tasty" and saved the other half for breakfast the next morning. The burrito microwaved pretty well. My last flauta did not. :) Definitely recommend! And definitely eat all your flautas at once. It's hard for me since I have no stomach but you likely do so don't disappoint yourself! :) read more

So, I didn't think the food was amazing here either. It was pretty good, definitely not terrible, like some other reviews said. Yet, we still had a great time. We met a bunch of people, so we were a big group. The server was efficient, friendly, patient and kind. The place was chill. I have been at some restaurants where they have weird rules, and are looking at you like you are doing something wrong. This place was perfect to come and be with other people and have a good time, just because the people running it actually make you feel welcome. Returned after a few months absence and am glad we did. This is not my go to place in Linwood but is consistent and fulfills my need for Mexican food, especially on cold nights. The salsa and chips remain thick and crispy (not greasy). The table made guacamole has four avocados and worth it. My chicken burrito was large and filling. We decided on this little place while on vacation. Service was quick. Food was ok we've had better at other places back home. The restaurant / bar is decorated with a Mexican motif. Looks like it could be fun on Cinco de Mayo. The waiter brought us drinks and chips and salsa. The salsa was spicy but tasted like canned tomato sauce. It was different. Not bad just not what I was expecting. The Tableside Guacamole actually wasn't. They came to the table with a huge pestle bowl with the guacamole already made. It was spicier than we're used to so a little disappointed that it hadn't been made table side so we could control that. The kids quesadilla was very hearty and full of cheese so our daughter was only able to finish just half. My husband had a combo plate. He enjoyed most of it. The beans and rice were ok. I enjoyed the Tostadas from the appetizer menu. They were piled high with fresh ingredients but were a bit on the boring side flavor wise. Could have used some acid like lime or pickled onions. To start off, service was good. Despite the sign that says it will take a while, we were surprised that our food came pretty quickly. That's pretty much everything good, besides the salsa. The salsa was yummy but everything else, not so much. The menu doesn't have much vegetarian items but they were more than willing to make items vegetarian for us. We got the mini burrito (veggies instead of chicken), veggie quesadilla, and veggie enchiladas with the green sauce. The quesadilla was ok. The burrito was also ok. The enchiladas were not good. Everything in it was raw and it was all lukewarm. Enchiladas should be baked in the oven, and yet somehow all of the filling was raw. The veggies in the quesadilla and burrito were also raw, they were at best half cooked. For the price point, we would have expected that at least the veggies be fully cooked. I always check the reviews before dining yet this time I just trusted the process. Never again! Seeing a packed restaurant I figured, I'd try it. NEVER EVER again! It's hard to mess up Mexican food. I can make it better myself. How do you mess up shrimp fajitas? At El Charro that's how! The shrimp and veggies should be sizzling, charred, seasoned. It was just the opposite, NOT charred, NOT seasoned! If the onions are translucent, it's sautéed, not charred or grilled. The worst EVER! I asked the server for more limes and some seasoning and she understood the limes request but didn't understand what I was requesting regarding seasoning, now I get why, there was NONE! Any Latino restaurant where I can speak Spanish to the staff and management tends to be a good place and this was no different. Excellent food, friendly and efficient service, and great ambiance. We were on a ski trip that would take four hours to the destination, and we decided to break the monotony by having dinner on the road. After some research, we decided on El Charro's. Good choice. The staff welcomed us and we were seated in no time. The restaurant has a full bar and we ordered several beers that included local brews, a nationally known beer and also a Mexican variety. Our main courses included Carnitas, Tacos Al Carbón, enchiladas and chimichangas. Every item was as tasty as the next. We left incredibly happy and also full. We ordered the cochinita pibil tacos, the tacos were cold and the meat was super dry, the rice was dry and old. I minded more that they brought it out at the same time as my entrée and it was lukewarm. The experience was overall very pleasant because it was so laid back. El Charro is my favorite restaurant in Lincoln. I had only dined at their outside tables in prior visits, so I was surprised how large the restaurant is inside. There are pool tables and a few arcade games as well - a great set up for kids and families. The service was generally good, although we had a mix up with some charges on our bill after our first visit, which the owner/manager Alberto (?) corrected and also gave us a gift card for a future visit. Talk about putting the customer first! The food was very good - guac prepared table-side, good salsa, great enchiladas and chimichangas. The kids loved the fried ice cream (set ablaze at the table) and while the adults enjoyed the margaritas and other drinks. We came back a second time during our vacation and everything was fantastic.
