4 stars for great fast food flavor. The scale is relative to all other fast food Tex Mex not to culinary fine dining. It's fast food people, expect greasy fast food and fast food service. We were in town for a wedding. In the 5 days that we are in Austin my cousin offered up a plethora of Tex Mex cuisine. We like, correction, LOVE tacos and wanted to find the best flavors out there. Mind you, my family lives in Hawaii and there's not much for good Mexican around. But me, I'm from Los Angeles, I know a good taco when I devour one. We probably ordered 1/2 of the entire menu at this place. All items were decent. Good flavor and filling food. But the standout here is the QUESO! If you're looking for a breakfast taco spot, come here! I recommend this location because it's a neighborhood gem with nice shaded benches. Their menu consists of lots of different flavors which is amazing. Their tacos are huge and probably the biggest I've seen yet. First things first, I recommend the Charlie's special which has eggs and chorizo. I also suggest ordering the Barbacoa which is marinated beef cheeks with cilantro and garlic. It's A MUST to only have corn tortillas as your choice. You should also pour their fresh salsa on top for more spice and flavor! Great place for a quick taco pick up!! I got the barbacoa plate. It comes with rice, beans, and a whole lotta barbacoa plus some tortillas on the side. They gave a good amount of meat, I was able to make 4 whole tacos and still have some meat left over. The plate is kinda pricey but you get what you pay for; a lot! I only stopped at this spot because my daughter was on her way out of town and ride was delayed an hour and we both wanted tacos and this was the closest place. It was a little after before 9 am and I wasn't sure if they were open because there were no people around and the only cars were parked in the back and looked abandoned...maybe they belonged to the employees, I don't know, but that a walk-up taco spot in Austin is desolate at breakfast time should have been a clue that I should have passed this place up! The menu on the side of the building next to the walk up window had options galore...too many, in my opinion, for tacos, so I just opted made-to-order tacos of bean, bacon and cheese, two, and four egg and potatoes tacos on flour tortillas with a small mocha latte. That small order of six tacos and one cup of coffee cost $26! Outrageous! My daughter thought her egg and potato tacos were bland and unremarkable. I can barely comment on my bean, bacon and cheese tacos because after one bite, I realized that they must have put hot peppers in the refried beans because they were too spicy for me to eat. I just don't understand why food establishments add spicy ingredients to regular foods and not disclose that information to its customers! Everyone doesn't like hot or spicy food! My mocha latte had a good chocolate flavor. The customer service was awful! There was no greeting of any kind, no "thank you" after I paid for my food or when I picked it up at the window (which was slammed shut after each encounter). There's no indoor sitting, so we had to sit outside as we waited for them to call up my order number. Had the Brentwood Taco (on puffy taco/tortilla) and it was delicious. Also got the chips and queso and a salad all of which were so tasty. Queso is thin but flavorful and chips are extra crispy. This was my first experience with el chilito and it did not disappoint! Their watermelon agua fresca was also great - not too watery and not too sweet. Their online ordering process was easy and efficient and more order was ready and waiting even earlier than indicated which is so appreciated these days with so much ordering shifted to online and the unusually long wait times for orders. I have enjoyed and supported El Chilito for years. I have found their food to be high quality and modestly priced and the service has been great. I was crushed to learn yesterday that they have cut their offerings by approximately 50%. My favorite tacos are off the menu and the excellent bean soup is no longer offered. The online menu also has no description of the offerings. I really view this as a bad move by El Chilito. It is no doubt made for financial reasons, but I will be going elsewhere.
