Needed a quick dinner at 9pm and stopped by El Chilito. Parking was easy, service was friendly and fast. There's no indoor seating. I got the picadillo burrito for ~$9. It ended up being really skinny and mostly filled with rice. Seasoning was minimal. The sauces that you can help yourself to are alright, but not really the punch of flavor you might be expecting. Took my three somewhat adult kids to El Chilito for dinner the other night, and it was a hit! We grabbed a mix of tacos--carnitas, barbacoa, and a couple of their breakfast tacos (because breakfast for dinner is always a win). We also ordered two vegan tacos made with mushroom, and they were really fantastic. I will be ordering these again when I go back. My kids went crazy over the carne asada burrito, and we all shared some chips and queso. Oh, and the agua fresca? So good! We even got to take the dog, since he was welcome at the outdoor benches. I stopped by here because the general ambiance looked authentic and enjoyable. The menu is extensive and looked like something to get excited about. The prices were steep for tacos but I know it's Austin and that's kinda what to expect. (The lesser known mom and pops/taquerias usually have tacos cheaper than 4 each). I ordered a street corn taco and I had high hopes. It comes with roasted corn, Valentino crema, cotija cheese, and pollo asado. All great things to accompany corn. The total came out to be about $4.50. I waited for about 10 minutes and when I finally tried it, it was so cold. The chicken was poorly seasoned, the sauce might as well have been missing, and the corn did not appear to be roasted, some kernels still stuck together. They do have self serve red and green sauces on the side, but I don't do spicy so that was no saving grace. I was annoyed spending that much on a cold, flavorless taco. Once I was done with my food, I realized there was no trash can! I don't like approaching a food window trash in hand to ask them to toss it for me, so I walked to the back of the spot until I found a landfill trash receptacle. I used to eat a lot of El Chilito when they had a location on Burnet Rd. I don't come to this location as much. But I do still like their tacos. My favorite is the Barbacoa taco. The meat is just so soft and flavorful. Breakfast taco favorite is the Cherrywood. Occasionally, I got their Barbacoa soup too, because why not, I love their barbacoa. But the best part of El Chilito, imho, is their salsa. It is unusually darker than any other salsa I had in other places. And it is very yum! The Burnet location used to let me buy a tub of the salsa. I kept in the fridge and just snacked it with tortilla chips. It never last very long in the fridge -- we just gobbled it up quick. read more

It's a great place to bring your dog (you can hit Alamo Pocket Park after). There are lots of picnic tables to sit at and a decent number of parking spots for those who are not in walking distance. The barbacoa soup may be my favorite soup of all time. There is always a taco of the month. You can also build your own. There is a daily happy hour as well which is a nice perk. The beef had so much flavor that you didn't need any salsa, however I can't resist a spicy green salsa and this one did not disappoint. I cannot get enough of their vegan queso! It is so delicious and creamy and their chips are really thick, but flavorful and perfectly salted. I also love their beyond beef picadillo taco as well as the migas taco. I have tried the pineapple and watermelon Agua Fresca as well. It's really delicious and refreshing on a hot day. The service is always good and it's decently fast when you need it in a rush. I order online often and also walk up to the window and it's very efficient and friendly service. There isn't anywhere to sit inside but has a covered patio and covered picnic tables which makes it somewhat challenging in the summer, but they do have fans that oscillate on the deck. Torchy's Tacos with fewer jokes and worse seating. They got tacos. They got burritos. There are a couple of soups or salads if you don't want to eat tortillas. The contents of the tacos/burritos are lovely. The salsas they offer to accompany your tacos/burrito do nothing. Leave them in the container - and save Austin landfill the burden of your two plastic mini-cups. There is no indoor seating. Everything is picnic-style outside. This is great news if you don't want to get COVID. It is not so great news if you don't want to freeze in the winter or fry like a horned toad in 105 degree heat. Fortunately, they put a lot of fans in the seating area - and the fans help. At my last count, there are 12,679 restaurants or trucks that serve tacos in the Austin Metropolitan area. I may have missed one or two if they were closed when I drove by. This is in the middle of the pack for what Austin offers in tacos. That puts them in fine company indeed. I got the "Charlie" which has potatoes egg chorizo and cheese and honestly way too many potatoes but this taco was pretty good. As for the carne asada, this was super disappointing. Omg, tacos! Puffy tacos! Be still, my heart. Cannot resist puffy tacos, won't even try. As a non-meat eater, i asked for beans, instead of the beef or chicken options. The server asked if I'd like to try the Beyond Beef on my tacos, and he got a quick YES! It's not yet on the menu, but will be added soon. Ask for it, if you're interested. The tacos was ready quickly and was pretty darn good. This "puffy" taco came with a thick, fresh corn tortilla, instead of the ballooned-up puffy tortilla i was expecting, but it was not disappointing taste-wise. The side of salsa was delicious, too, and definitely on the spicy hot side (which i love). The location is very casual with ordering and picking up at windows, some covered seating on their deck and picnic tables with umbrellas. Great for a day like today. I liked how this place had a lot of outdoor seating available and some of it was even covered which was nice while waiting for your order. Speaking of, with my coupon I ended up ordering a beef puffy taco! This was my first time trying a puffy taco and honestly I think I prefer the traditional flat tortilla.
