Another great find during our bachelor party trip to Austin. This place was right down the street from our Airbnb. We decided to take the short walk from our place to get some tacos. I can only describe this as a larger version of a taco stand. You walk up and order at the window and pick up from another window. The menu is posted next to the order window so you can peruse any taco or burrito of your choice. My brother and I went with a couple of different ones...I believe the carne asada and fish. I will say the tacos were ok. The thing that really stood out was the chipotle style salsa that came with the tacos. Probably some of the best salsa I've ever had. My brother also ordered some churros. They were really good for being fried from frozen. After you get your order, you can take it with you to go or you can have a seat at one of the outdoor benches. I've been coming here for over 10 years. It's one of my favorite spots. There is a lot to choose from which ranges from tacos, to burritos and plates. I am in love with the rice, it has such a great flavor. When we went a few nights ago, I had a carne asada plate. The meat was tender and flavorful. The salsa has a great roasted flavor to it as well. The agua fresca is very refreshing, the lemonade is my favorite. I read a few reviews before writing mine and noticed that several others had complained about the customer service, that was not my experience. It was good but I'm not sure about paying $6 plus $3 for chicken is worth it. SETUP - picnic tables outdoors (bathroom is outside access also), you order at the walk up window and they call your name when it's ready. Good for a quick bite on a nice day. Little pricey for what you get, but overall good food. They have a breakfast and lunch/dinner menu so I'll probably come back for breakfast but not the $9 salad. read more

Fast, easy option for good tacos. This place is great because they don't just sell tacos they also have other options that are just as good as their tacos. Like their paletas if you are looking for a place with a good dessert option. As for drinks their watermelon fresca is a perfect pair for your tacos in the Texas heat. I'm giving this two stars because their tacos and burritos are delish. However, be careful ordering a salad. I had to send mine back this morning/early afternoon because I ordered a large with chicken and they gave me a tiny salad with no chicken. This happens, so I didn't feel too sorry for myself. I kindly asked for them to fix my order, and hoped maybe I'd get an "I'm sorry" from one of the hip and trendy girls with the tattoos. Sadly, they just snatched my sad little salad bowl away and gave me annoyed glances. This would be the best taco shack in Boston. But it's in Austin. The tortillas aren't fresh. The tacos are premium priced. The ingredient combinations aren't terribly creative. The to-go shack style makes Torchy's and Tacodeli look like full-service restaurants. What I do appreciate is the taco-burrito-plate format. The breakfast all day. The rock solid salsa (albeit only one for like 20 different tacos, c'mon), the strong iced coffee and the 2 dollar sangria smoothie weirdness. When you do find yourself here, cop the Cohcinita Pibil and one of the breakfast tacos (Cherrywood, Charlie, Migas). And you will find yourself here, because I guarantee this will be the favorite spot of at least one of your friends. Don't say no, but don't make a day of it, either. read more

The one thing that trumps deliciously-made food, is bad, bad service. It seems to be rocket science for some places of business to put someone with a smiling, courteous face on the front line of a restaurant these days. I couldn't WAIT to literally hurry up and finish my order so I could plop down on on these cutely colored benches to write a bad review of the customer service I just experienced. She was blonde, cold, and rolled her eyes. She did not say hi when I came to the window even though she was welcomed with one by me, and when I asked her for a second to look through the menu, she immediately looked away as if I was bothering her or just annoying her in general. I don't like feeling like I'm not welcome, especially when I'm supporting a local business. Maybe she had an off day, maybe she had a bad one, fine. The problem with that though, is that it carried over to her demeanor and really rubbed a what could've been a repeat customer the wrong way. My SO will no longer eat here, and always teases me that I will regret it when I tell him I'm getting food from El Chilito and he's always right. 10 out of 10 times, they will get my order wrong or forget about my order altogether. Not the best tacos I've had in Austin, but they're OK. If you want quick and fast food type tacos, this is a good spot to go. The outdoor seating isn't amazing and is more conducive to take away.
