Best mexican food in town and great service I love the chipotle burrito and the gorditas are my absolute favorite in the menu.

Hallelujah! This place is amazing and the first authentic Mexican food I've had since moving to HumCo. It reminds me of the Mexican food I used to get in the mission district in SF. Seriously, SO GOOD. I have eaten here the last three weekends. I am totally obsessed. Their Chile relleno is incredible, their Chile Colorado (with red sauce) is amazing, their enchiladas are heavenly, and most of all their molé is magical. I sadly don't have any pictures bc as soon as the food arrives I seem to lose all sense of space and time. I cannot recommend this place enough. Everyone is masked and COVID protocols are followed. All patrons wear masks until they are seated. This place is such a gift to Humboldt & Arcata. If you haven't tried it yet - GO! read more

The menu is varied and fits all budgets and tastes. Tinga was on pointe and the pasole was spicy and delicious. So many new choices. We're going back! Heck of good carne asada super burrito. Such a good tortilla and big enough for two meals. I would have given 5 stars if the horchata I got wasn't like chalk mixed in milk. That was just gross. The bottom of the cup had a thick 1/3 inch grime. Maybe a mix? I don't know but yuck. read more

The food is excellent, but I have a concern. During the covid pandemic there is a mask requirement. It is posted at the restaurant. However they permitted a young man to enter and wait in the restaurant with only his t-shirt pulled up for a faux mask. He also stood in the doorway so customers entering and exiting had to walk close past him. It makes me concerned about returning. read more

However, this would be my first choice as we should be supporting queer-owned and non-white businesses, even though it's a little on the pricier side. Doesn't look like much when you see it from the outside but when you go inside it feels like you are in Mexico. I was lucky to meet the owner and he told me he was from Mexico City. I ordered the mojarra plate with rice and salad. Usually everywhere I've gone and ordered that plate they just can't seem to get the fish cooked correctly but when my plate arrived, I automatically knew they did it correctly. That first bite blew me away! It brought so many flavors that I haven't tasted since I left Mexico. I was left speechless! I went there again a second time and ordered a Pambazo. Once again I got my food and that first bite immediately took me to my childhood times in Mexico. The flavors in that Pambazo where simply amazing homemade comfort food and that person cooking the food back there knows what they are doing! Definitely will be coming back over and over to keep on trying different items in your menu! read more

Our experience here was wonderful. We had great service and the food was amazing! I got the Pambazos and my partner got the Chile Colorado combo plate, and both were delicious. The only downside was the drunk group of men sitting near us (not the restaurant's fault). These men got into a conversation with one of the staff members and tried to tell them to lower their prices and push margarita pitcher deals and crap onto college students to get more customers....which to me is dumb advice. Service wasn't very good. My daughters order was wrong and she didn't get served until we all were done eating our meal. They still charged me for meal. Another person with our group said no beans and it was on her slip but they put beans in her meal. The back room wasn't very clean. read more

We enjoyed all of our meals at El Chipotle. We had attentive, friendly service. Complimentary chips and salsa were fresh and delicious. All orders were taken correctly and served together. We made a couple of substitutions for our gluten free/vegetarian members which were cheerfully provided. The ambience was relaxed and casual in an aged diner type setting. We had chili verde, authentic poblano chile relleno and tacos de lengua and a bowl of menudo. Everything was very good. The menudo didn't have hominy but was very tasty despite that. We will definitely return here when we are in Arcata. read more

El Chipotle is a great new Mexican restaurant to have in the Sunny Brae neighborhood. Fantastic menu with some unique dishes, like the Huarache (sandal) plate with a grilled corn meal "sole", your choice of meat, grilled nopal (cactus) strips, and more. I had the Huarache with carne asada, and it was beautifully done - lean tender flank steak marinated before grilling. Also, for me, chile relleno is the quality test for my first meal at a Mexican restaurant. Their "Chile Relleno Autentico" was about the best I've ever had. Fluffy egg batter outside lightly perfectly fried, with a flavorful and mildly spicy fresh-roasted poblano chile and excellent quality melted cheese inside, topped with their fresh version of the traditional salsa. Wow! Friendly excellent staff. Opening soon for breakfast, too! My wife and I were truly impressed with our meal at El Chipotle and look forward to many happy returns. read more
