Rare Ethnic Food 35 I have been to many Columbian and Venezuelan restaurant but never come across a Latin BBQ restaurant. In it own BBQ way, this is unique to experience it. You can fill your stomach under $10. We have three dishes here. The De Carne Desmechada (Ropa Veja), Patacon, and the Pincho De Pollo. The Patacon is traditional dish of Columbia, the Patacon here is top with grilled chicken, Pork rinds. I say it is just ok. The reason I am here is to try their The De Carne Desmechada. They use two fried tostones with one on top and the other at bottom for a sandwich. The infill is Ropa veja which cook very well to accommodate the Latin style sandwich. Very tasty. We also have the Pincho with chicken kabab. It think it can use better seasoning. Overall experience is good. I definitely come back to try some other item in the menu. read more

This is a good place to go if you want a grease bomb at pretty much any hour. They are generous with their french fries, and they provide a high calorie to dollar ratio value. This review is for delivery via Uber Eats. My family ordered the perro, the choriperro, the chicharrones, the pork kabobs, and the chicken tender kids meal. It was a ridiculously huge amount of food. The chicharrones are good, especially the ones that are heavily sprinkled with lime. Some of the pieces were not as well fried, and that made for very chewy eating. The choriperro, which is Venezuelan chorizo sausage treated like their perro dog (covered in cheese and fried potatoes, on a hot dog bun) was huge and served automatically with a ton of fries. I expected more spice and heat from a chorizo, so that was disappointing. The grilled pork kabobs were good. I got them with two sides of salad, which were just a couple slices of tomato with shredded iceberg lettuce. My son loved his perro, which was huge. My daughter's chicken tenders were not quite tenders. They were a deep fried chicken breast cut up into slices. I'm not complaining, although she (a toddler, mind you) was taken aback as the appearance was not as she expected. I will say that the fries held up their crispiness despite the half hour journey down to my home. I think if I got this food at 2AM after a night of drinking, this place would be perfect. However, despite my love of junk food, for a family dinner, the food was a little too greasy, even cut with a beer. It's better for a greasy snack. read more

This joint is spot on. I stopped by while in the area and ordered some empanadas and a steak patacon. I have to tell hou that the Patacon was finger liking good and it came in a great size. Enough for a big guy like me. I mention this because I've ordered Patacon from others places and, they weren't as BIG. Very affordable prices and its made after you order. It also brings a side order of fries. The Empanadas could be meattie inside and with a bit more flavor I noticed they also have a food truck outside and, I believe it is for overnight service or to extend their coverage. After checking them out on an episode of "Eden Eats" I had to give the burger a try that was featured on the show. This is the messiest, juiciest, tastiest thing between two slices of bread. Why the 3 star score? I really liked the Ropa Vieja Arepa. It's a good size arepa. Definitely need 2 hands to hold. Nice & crisp filled with flavorful shredded beef. The problem is the 2 sauces that they provide in the seating area for your food. Hardly no flavor or heat. You have to have good sauce, I'm sorry. That would have definitely taken the food here to the next level. It's like watered down mayo. It also came with not so fresh lettuce on the side, and crappy tomato that was mushy when you bit into it. I went to el chuzo the other day for lunch. I found it here on yelp and was very intrigued by the tostones sandwich. The place is at an interesting location. There was only one lady working the desk and I'm guessing a small army of cooks in the back. She was nice and to the point. Nothing out of place. Like I mentioned earlier, I went there for lunch. I got the beef tostones sandwich, my companions for the arepas sandwich and the chuchurron. Salchipapa for the table. Man, let me say that they give ALOT of food. I wasn't expecting the sandwiches to be so full. The sandwich was delicious. So good. I anticipated greatness and that place delivered. Seating wasn't too comfortable, however. Thanks to the recommendations of Mike S., Carlos H., and Brett N., I added El Chuzo BBQ to my list of places to try along Armenia Avenue. El Chuzo is a very authentic Colombian-style BBQ restaurant meaning that the meats are smoked rather than grilled, and served whole rather than chopped or shredded. El Chuzo is a very small little lunch counter / to-go spot located a few blocks north of Sligh Avenue along Armenia. I had to chuckle when pulling up as there is a tattoo parlor right next door to the late-night Latin BBQ spot, and the guys from the tattoo shop were running into El Chuzo's for something to eat. Yup, this was gonna be a legendary meal! The first thing you should know is that the counter staff doesn't speak a lot of English, so there's bound to be a few comical moments when ordering if you don't speak Spanish very well. (Although I will confess that their English got much better after I stumbled through ordering in broken Spanish.... I'm just saying....) El Chuzo offers a number of different sandwiches, hot dogs, and burgers, along with empanadas, homemade chorizo sausage, and chicarron (pork rind) for appetizers. For their main platters they offer Asados en Leña which translates to "roasted over charcoal", and you have your choice of chicken or pork kabobs, BBQ pork ribs, or butterflied strip steak with a couple of sides and sauces. I especially enjoyed their homemade sauces to complement the various dishes. I ordered the churrasco steak with a side of rice and plantains, and that came with a delicious garlic sauce, and the traditional chimichurri sauce. You'll also find lots of carry-out family-style platters of smoked meats. El Chuzo doesn't open until 12 Noon on most weekdays, and they are not open on Mondays. During the week they close at 10pm, but on Friday and Saturday they open at 4pm and stay open until 4:30am. There are only about 10 seats inside the small restaurant in a lunch counter-style set up, and there's another 5 or 6 seats outside the restaurant. Plan on this place being crowded! read more

I always say I'm going to work my way through the menu, and then I seem to order the same thing - the salchipapa. This was the first item I tried here, and apparently that one taste was enough to create an addiction. For those who are a salchipapa virgin - it's a huge platter combining fries, hotdogs, and cheese, with a salsa of ketchup+mayo mixed in. At El Chuzo you supposedly can have one of six sauces mixed in, but when I ordered mine without the ketchup+mayo, it still was mixed in. Oh well, I still managed to eat every drop. Tostones are also excellent here, huge and crunchy. The empanada was just okay, as was the chicken kabob; both were a bit dry. So, I learned my lesson - stick with the salchipapa, and leave happy. I've never eaten indoors where they have bar stools lined up around the walls of the small store to encourage eating at the counters lining the walls. I have eaten at one of the two outside tables and enjoyed the scenic view of the parking lot and Armenia Avenue. Prices are very reasonable, and although food comes out slowly, it is definitely worth the wait. read more

After a long day at the zoo with my sister recommended we stop here to eat as it was one of her go to stops when she used to live in town and it did not disappoint. We ordered the arepa picada, two beef empanadas , the hamburguesa, and the passion fruit juice and it was all amazing the sauces were great, the meat was tender. The service was good the lady in the front made sure we had everything we needed. The only downside to this place is the seating its very limited and hard when you have kids but it's understandable as this place is known to frequented by late night parties and club goers. The burgers have a great smokey flavor and they put tons of different condiments on all their food which makes it sloppy and delicious. The tostones were a little over cooked, but I still enjoyed them allot. My friends mom makes amazing chicharrones so I was a little disappointed that I didn't really like theirs - didn't really have any flavor, but their main menu items are fantastic. read more

By far one of the best Latin American restaurants I have been to in Tampa. They have updated their restaurant front within the past 6 months and it looks awesome! I love that they are a late night spot so it's 100Xs better than McDonald's or whatever gas station is still open. I typically get the carne empanadas and I tried the Hawaiian empanada for the first time last night. Mwuahh it was amazing I loved it, my cousin doesn't like Hawaiian pizza but she loved this empanada too! I also ordered the salchipollo which is always fantastic(gotta get extra salsa rosada ;). This is a unique Latin BBQ eatery. Menu was in Spanish with some photos to help me decide what to get. The lady behind the counter was patient enough to explain menu to me and answer my questions.
