Whenever we asked someone to recommend somewhere to eat, they invariably would say La Bodeguita. I…read moream not exaggerating, every single person. We were leaving for the second leg of our trip and were running late, as usual. We decided to run across the street for a sit down lunch, what's another hour? Two smiling faces greeted us at the door. They offered a high top but my hip was absolutely not digging it nor a table up the flight of steep stairs. Once seated, we were greeted promptly and had water in front of us almost immediately. We each ordered soup and then a sandwich to share. I had the Sopa de Pollo . A hot bowl thick with thin noodles and lots of chunks of chicken. The chunks were too big to eat without being cut up which was a challenge in a bowl of broth. It was so hot that I had to wait a while to try it and even then had to blow on it. It was delicious. Unless the soup is your meal, order a cup. I still took nearly a pint of soup back with me. My husband ordered the Frijole Negro - a huge bowl of black beans that was served with a large pile of raw onions on top. Like the chicken soup, it was burn your mouth hot and a very large serving. He said it was good but he'd not order it again. Moving on to the sandwich. We had the Cubano. I'm not even going to describe it - just trust me - order the Cubano. Do not look at the rest of the menu - order the Cubano. Don't even bother looking at the ingredients, just order the Cubano. Have you ordered it yet? Do it already. The Cubano is huge. We split one half and had the other when we arrived at our next stop. Do consider that we had soup first; otherwise, we'd have eaten the whole thing. The accompanying plantain chips were worthy of their own review. They were wonderful. Who knows if and when we'll be back to Louisville but when we are, La Bodeguita will be the first place we stop. BTW, have you ordered the Cubano yet? What are you waiting for? Put your phone done and order it! Enjoy!!

Leave it to my family to find a Latin store in Kentucky. My cousin had to have his Cuban coffee,…read morenot an espresso. Lol. Well, this place had most of the Cuban staples like croquetas and pastelitos. They took advantage of ordering lunch as well for the trip. They ordered a croqueta preparada and a rabo encendido (ox tail) and they were very much enjoyed. I had a pastelito de carne (meat turnover). It was not like the ones in Miami but I could not complain since I was just glad to have a taste of home. They also had all kinds of Latin produce and ingredients. It was not so busy when we came in but it was packed when we left therefore check times to get in and out faster.

Because of that, the food was a little limited, most of the items they had out were nearing the bottom, and they didn't have many things out. Because of the lack of lack of options I decided to get the cubano sandwich, the tres leches cake, & a drink. The sandwich was massive. I ate one half and saved the other to give to my husband. I wasn't the biggest fan of the ham they used, but my husband liked it all the same. I was a fan of the bread! Not sure how they made it so good and crispy, but it was amazing. The sandwich itself was just okay. The tres leches cake. I really loved the icing (the pink one). The cake was good but I don't think it was moist enough. It was a two tier cake so perhaps that's the reasoning. I got the small one (about $7) and it was easily enough for 4 decent size servings. Overall a cute little local place & I can't wait to go back for bread and other desserts!

My friend ordered the Empanadas and a Cuban sandwich. I didn't get a picture of the Cuban sandwich but it looked amazing. She said both were great. Our server did an excellent job checking on us regularly but not too much. She kept our water filled when she noticed they were getting empty. The environment is cozy, with festive lights on the window between the main room and the closed in patio. There is always a buzz in the restaurant and if you live in the area, you will likely see someone you know here.
