They take "farm to table" very seriously here. Almost everything on the menu lists the origin farm or other source of the main ingredients. This includes the waitstaff. My waitress Rebecca included this info in every one of her answers to questions about menu items, without fail and from memory. I was feeling salad-deprived and this one definitely appealed. The name "Summer Salad" gives nothing away but it was the description that got to me: watermelon, jicama, chayote, oranges, mint, feta cheese, currants, pepitas, cashews, mint-coconut-ginger vinaigrette. A fantastic riot of flavors, crunchy vegetables, perfectly and lightly dressed with the unique vinaigrette. Everything was at the peak of freshness, full of flavor. Radishes and jicama sweet and juicy, the mandarin orange segments obviously hand cut from a fruit, not dumped from a can. I wasn't familiar with chayote, sliced into shoestrings. It reminded me of unripe pear or maybe a firmer cucumber. A truly memorable salad; I don't say that often. As an authentic Mayan restaurant you won't find Tex-Mex here. The closest thing would be the Tacos De Lengua (that's beef tongue) Grass-fed and from a local farm of course. For a vegetarian maybe Mushroom Enchiladas would appeal: housemade corn tortillas, mushrooms, black beans, chihuahua cheese, tomato casera sauce, queso fresco, kale & frisée. I was more intrigued by the Mole Of The Day which as the name suggests, changes daily. Described as "locally sourced, sustainably raised meat, Veracruz chocolate mole, roasted broccoli." That day it was a ribeye from Berry Farms. I've only had mole with chicken before but I gave it a try. Glad I did. The steak, though thin, was seared a perfect medium-rare, almost fork-cut tender and juicy. It was served atop the mole and they didn't skimp. There was plenty of this thick, aromatic sauce hinting of so many flavors I couldn't quite identify. The chocolate was surprisingly subtle and didn't become obvious until later. A perfect balance of flavors, fairly mild yet just assertive enough to stand up to the steak. I ended up getting too many vegetables. I already mentioned the delicious salad. And the steak also came with roasted broccoli and carrots. They were perfectly cooked and would have been sufficient. But I forgot the steak came with the vegetable side so I also ordered a Summer Veggie Mix (broccoli, carrots, green beans, squash). Each vegetable trimmed and cooked to its own peak of perfection then the whole thing lightly dressed in a sweet glaze. Very good. I also forgot that I had asked about the lima beans which sounded interesting and Rebecca said that because it was my first time they were on the house. These arrived with my steak as well. So many vegetables! I took some home and about 1/3 of the steak. Listed on the menu simply as "Tok Sel Lima Beans" they were the highlight of the meal, vegetable-wise. I Googled it and only Mayan Cafe web pages came up. It's apparently their invention and they list the recipe! I'll have to try making it; so good. The ground, roasted pumpkin seeds, coarsely torn parsley leaves, green onions, and fresh lime completed this dish. Drinks menu included many intriguing specialty cocktails featuring smaller, eclectic brands of spirits. Many tequilas and whiskies. One of the offerings was "Black-Owned Bourbons," a flight of 4 from black-owned companies. Local beers only. As for sodas, you won't find Coke or Pepsi on this menu, just some small craft brands I haven't heard of. Kudos! I tried the Blackberry Smoke: "Mal Bien zacate limòn mezcal, Narano bitter orange liqueur, epazote syrup, blackberry." Wonderful smokiness from the mezcal, cool and refreshing with crushed ice, a riotous crimson-fuchsia color from the crushed, partially pureed blackberries. Alcohol strength seemed about right for this kind of drink. For dessert I had Dark Chocolate Torte: cayenne, pecan & cashew crust, fresh fruit. The torte was chocolatey with an unexpected light texture almost like a mousse. The cayenne and cinnamon gave it a slight kick. The fruit sauce drizzled on top and on the plate was tangy and aromatic. The fruit was a generous bunch of blueberries, large like the New Jersey farmed kind but sweet and tangy like the wild Maine kind. Nothing, not even fruit on the torte, is an afterthought here. Other positives include the ambience and service. The outside covered space had widely spaced tables and comfortable chairs, individual table lamps, many plants and patio lights, attractive blue-lit bar, and fans (noisy but needed to manage the heat and the flies; not their fault). Vocal music in Spanish was quiet and chill. My waitress Rebecca knew the menu completely, and checked on me frequently. She even noticed as I was battling the flies and hurried over to finish boxing my leftovers ahead of schedule. Also the maître d came by as I was finishing up to inquire. We ordered the guacamole and chips, they were good but felt pricy for $15. I ordered the chicken dish, it was really spicy and I expected it to be larger for $30. Would give Mayan Cafe 3.5 stars, although the atmosphere (back patio) was lovely and service was quick. We ordered two drinks and both were not good. The gimlet with white peach tasted off, I suspect maybe the peaches used were not ripe yet. The spin on a French 75 was pretty basic given the price of it. We ordered an appetizer which was puréed black beans with chorizo and cheese. The dip was good and portion size was large. For those three items the bill was pretty pricey! Genuinely holy s*** this food is so good. Mayan Cafe is top tier in all of Louisville in terms of food quality and taste. I went here for the first time on a Saturday and I was back on Monday night! There are great vegan and vegetarian options and you can substitute basically anything to fit your dietary needs. The aesthetic is very warm and mellow, with a refined touch that's perfect for special occasions. And oh my days the food is incredible! The Sikil Pak, (pumpkin seed and tomato dip) tastes like 2000 BC in the BEST way possible. It is transcendent! You simply cannot leave without ordering the Empanadas. They're filled with beans and goat cheese and all the good feelings. I will say, the seating is STRICT! Show up early for your reservation and do not expect to stay more than two hours as they will ask you (very politely) to leave when the next reservation arrives. No lolly gagging, lol! Dining group of 8 enjoyed a weeknight dinner in the enclosed dining area near the back of the restaurant. We were quite cozy and comfortable with the multiple heaters and temperature was able to be adjusted to our preference. Waitstaff was fantastic, very knowledgeable, attentive, and on point. Over half of the diners ordered the cochinita pibil and were complimentary. I ordered the rabbit entree and felt it was a bit dry and not very flavorful, indeed tasted like chicken? Another diner had the mahi mahi and raved about the flavorful layers in the dish. We also shared the 3-dip appetizer (guacamole, sikil pak, bean) and it was delicious with the light crispy tortilla chips. One diner ordered a pina colada, another a Paloma, and another a vodka pomegranate mixture and all 3 were complimentary of these cocktails and mentioned they were strong. Parking is free along the surrounding streets, but be prepared for the game of chance with finding a spot nearby or maybe walking off your dinner. I just attended an event that was catered by Mayan Cafe. The two small bites that really stood out to me were the Mexican Chocolate Cookies and the guacamole. The guacamole was so incredibly fresh! This is the second event I've attended catered by Mayan Cafe which definitely added to my excitement to show up. I'm including a photo from last year's in-person visit for my birthday. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Louisville and is always in my top 3 recommendations to visitors. The food is fantastic and the service is outstanding. I've never had a bad dish here. Their lima beans are worth getting. About four or five years ago, I made a reservation for my sister and my brother in law so they could celebrate my brother in law's birthday. I called ahead and asked the manager if I could pay for their meal, which they politely accommodated. My sister and brother in law had a wonderful meal that they still talk about now. Our server is very knowledgeable and friendly. The vibe is cozy and chill, not crowded at all. Wine and cocktail list is small but perfectly curated for food pairings. We went big with the open-faced taco special (braised pork shoulder, kale, handmade tortilla), salmon with huitlacoche sauce, and oven-roasted rabbit with pumpkin seed mole. In December 2012 in the Chef's notes of the incredible Chef's Menu to celebrate the turning of the largest Mayan Empire calendar cycle, which popular media has greatly latched into as well, Chef Ucán reminded those of us reading his menu that the Mayan Empire never fell, large parts of it were conquered, but that pockets and enclaves and outposts exist to this very day. I think of this story often when I dine at the Mayan Cafe. To me, it never stops being an important and delicious embassy to the peak of a once great and so I'm told Living Empire. The Cafe's cuisine is singular. I can think of no other restaurant in any city I've visited where the top suggestion is to be sure to try the Tok Sel Lima Beans, whether they come as part of your entree or you order them as a side, I find that your dinner is somehow only complete with them. I also think a Cuitlacoche sauce is rare to see in just about any sort of restaurant, so the Salmon dish, which remains a menu staple, is delicious and worth a try just for the novelty, as it is a favorite of mine and quickly a favorite of many I've introduced it to. (Cuitlacoche, I've learned, is a mushroom relative that loves growing on corn and picks up the sweetness of corn in an earthy, fascinating way.) In recent years I've found myself moving from "saving" trips to Mayan Cafe for special occasions and excuses to finding myself somewhat regular. I've grown a fondness for intimate dining inside in the coldest weather and the expanded back patio, especially its welcoming bar in good weather. (It is well covered and has good heaters and makes a great spot for much of the weather in between those extremes, too!) The somewhat regularity of the trips have only given me a deeper appreciation for the seasonal variety and fresh ingredients the Mayan Cafe plates with equal gusto. Even when I think I know what I'm in the mood for when I arrive, I always want to know what the daily specials are. I've yet to be disappointed by any Salbutes (a taco relative, presumably an ancestor) of the Day, Wild-caught Fish of the Day, or Mole of the Day that I have tried. I've been delightedly surprised by some of the fresh and extremely seasonal ones I've had. I feel privileged to have this Embassy in my neighborhood. It's a glimpse into some other world, it's a getaway trip to some other Empire, at least for my taste buds and my love of stories, as Chef Ucán can deliver wild stories in every plate even without pairing notes in the menu alongside them. read more

If it were possible, I'd give Mayan Cafe 6 stars...or 10! First of all, I arrived at the restaurant at 9:46pm (having called a little earlier from my hotel and being told the kitchen is open as long as you get here by 9:59pm. I had expected to get into Louisville earlier but my flight was delayed. Also, I'd been to Mayan Cafe twice before and loved it.) In any case, the entire staff was absolutely lovely even tho I was the only one at the restaurant (they had been busy earlier in the evening). And the food--OMG! I started with the winter salad, a scrumptious combination of greens, butternut squash, jicama, pear, currants, pepitas & cashews. So healthy! So delicious! I could probably have it 3 times a week. For my entree, I had the rabbit with pumpkin seed mole, pears and fried plantains. Truly superb (extra points because there were hardly any bones in it, not always the case with rabbit dishes). When I noticed that one dish had a huitlacoche sauce I asked for a thimbleful just so I could taste it (I love huitlacoche, something you don't see too often on menus). My fabulous server Rebecca brought a small bowl of it explaining that's what the kitchen poured out. It was SO GOOD!! I dipped some corn tortillas in it (which was yummy) but then, not wanting to waste any, just used a spoon to finish it. It could truly be added to the menu as a soup app. The chocolate torte with blueberries and raspberry sauce (and a hint of cayenne) was the perfect way to end the meal. And the sangria, which had rum and vanilla in it, was probably the best sangria I've ever had! This is a world class restaurant!! Do NOT miss it when you're in Louisville. It's been four years since I last reviewed Mayan Cafe, since we were in the thick of COVID. Several great meals -- and thankfully the end of the pandemic -- later, this needs to be updated. Mayan Cafe remains my favorite restaurant in Louisville. I was lucky enough to join some coworkers at Mayan Cafe last night, and it made me so happy to see how much they enjoyed this iconic spot as well. The Cochinita Pibil -- always delicious. It's my favorite entree on the menu, though the salbutes and rabbit are also great picks. And don't forget the lima beans. Even if they don't come with a dish, get them on the side if you must. They are magic, and if you don't get them, you really haven't eaten here. The sangria and desserts are also worth the extra dollars. And did you know that Mayan Cafe has an allergen menu? I didn't until last night. One of my coworkers is vegan and requested this menu, which helped her find items on the menu that she loved. Mayan Cafe has also opened up a back patio since I last wrote a review. Our servers last night were delightful, as they always are. Mayan Cafe just consistently knocks it out of the park. And is an overall great dining experience that deserves its long-standing reputation as one of the best local restaurants in Louisville. I went there last week on my birthday eve. When the very welcoming hostess -- who I later found out was the part-owner and general manager Anne -- found out that I knew their lima beans were acclaimed, she had a server bring out a complimentary side for me (without knowing it was my birthday or that I was a Yelp reviewer). Yes, these were delicious. The cochinita pibil entree also was very good, and the leftovers kept well and stayed delicious. For dessert, I got the coffee which was amazing with a cinnamon flavoring and the Mexican tiramisu which basically was moist cake with delicious frosting and berries. The cake was both beautiful and delicious. When I told Anne it was my birthday eve upon leaving and after I paid the check, she said, "We love to celebrate birthdays!" Of course, we had to try the lima beans--super yummy! My vegan friend was so happy with their special allergy menu and the variety of options available to her, and of course, she loved her meal. I ordered a red blend with Tempranillo that was delicious but not too bold that it overpowered my tuna tacos. The ahi tuna was seared to perfection. Sweet, slightly citrusy pineapple with cool and creamy avocado created such a nice balance. I did not heed the server's warning about the heat level of the green chipotle sauce--don't do that! Sheer perfection. From the service to the intimate dining room to the glorious food, Mayan Cafe has everything I love about dining out. The family and I had three dishes with very different flavor profiles that were all winners. My husband enjoyed the catch of the day, a tender mahi mahi. It came with a sauce I could bathe in! I enjoyed the duck papadzules. They were like the best enchiladas you've ever had with duck confit spilling out of house made tortillas. We snagged a last-minute reservation online to sit outside at their bar, and it couldn't have been a more perfect-weather evening. The outdoor setup had a relaxed yet stylish vibe--ideal for dressing up a bit while keeping it relaxed. The food was phenomenal! My partner ordered the tuna tacos, which had a great heat level and incredibly fresh ingredients--simple, bold, and delicious. I went with the Chilaquile, and wow, a tortilla lasagna, delicate yet packed with layers of flavor. So unique and so well executed! The cocktails were equally impressive. I loved that they were featuring a woman-owned tequila--naturally, I had to try the Blanco, and it was a hit. We found some street parking a block or so down. Just know that while I enjoy every little thing about Mayan Cafe, from its dark, moody vibes to its extremely gracious staff (our bartender served us with a sincerely delivered, "I just love alcohol!") to the aforementioned libations (one glass of the best sangria I've ever had, possibly because it had a generous CHAMPAGNE pour...have you ever?) to my exquisite vegan entree (ask for the dietary restrictions menu)... the lima beans are what I cannot stop thinking about. And you can find this recipe online--thank you for being so generous-- but I heard that it's actually not ever going to taste as good as it does when prepared by the alchemists at work in the Mayan kitchen. The current vegan entree is the "Harvest Toss" and it's an artfully-arranged melange of quinoa, sweet potatoes, chickpeas and other vegetables on top of a delicious red pepper hummus. I appreciate this even more than veggie burritos or tacos (not that I don't love these), because it's unlike anything I've ever had before. We had an incredible dinner at Mayan Café--every dish was beautifully done and full of flavor. When we had passed by it the previous day the menu hadn't really appealed to me, but the restaurant was highly regarded and they had gluten-free options, so I decided to try something new. We had the Tok-sel lima beans as a starter, which were delicious (bonus: they were free with a Yelp check-in!), and for our entrees, I had the burrito with chicken and without Chihuahua cheese (Mexican rice, black beans, roasted corn, peppers, squash, tomatillo sauce, sour cream, fried egg) and my sister had the Cauliflower Al Pastor (sautéed cauliflower in chili oil, quinoa, greens, pepitas, tomato frito sauce). This area (NuLu) has been extremely busy over the past week. I stumbled onto this gem of a restaurant while looking for places in walking distance of my hotel. After trying it, I am shocked that it is not packed, this has to be the best Latin cuisine that I have had since getting into the state. We then moved onto the cochinita and the mushroom based tortilla. The cochinita was a good sized serving topped with an orange sauce. I enjoyed it pretty thoroughly and it was a pleasant surprise. My wife had the mushroom tortilla dish which the mushrooms themselves were good, but we noticed the tortilla felt as if it wasn't cooked all the way through and had a doughy taste to it still. The tortilla may have been too thick but either way it was slightly off putting. To drink we split a Jamaica with mint which was delicious and hydrating. It was mainly a mint leaf that added the slight mint flavor so it didn't over power the hibiscus. Would highly recommend. For a desert we had a Mexican tiramisu which was overall a great end to the overall food. Only negative was the mandarins slice on the top of the dessert was very tart which clashed with the sweetness of the dessert. The ambiance was decent and had low light setting which was nice, we personally did not like how close together the seats were as it made it seem like the just wanted to cram as many people into the area to maximize profits. Would be nice to have a bit more space. Speaking of profit, I do believe the dishes were solid but I truthfully don't think the prices are worth it. I understand the farm fresh is a huge part of it, but when you're selling 3 tacos for 25$ it's clear there's a specific group of people this is geared towards in addition to the part of town. This is the main reason I am giving it a 4/5. The service was exemplary and our server was on time, very polite and was amazing at giving recommendations. She was the one that recommended the starter. Overall would come here sporadically or for special occasions but would not make it a regular occurrence due to pricing. read more

Came here for dinner on a Monday evening, I had a reservation but would have been fine without one. It got fairly busy while I was there, so I'd recommend going for a reservation if coming on the weekend I was really looking forward to the pumpkin seed mole on the rabbit dish for my entire trip and it absolutely lived up to the hype! It surprisingly had more of a pumpkin or more likely cinnamon like taste to me than the pure richness you might expect, but it went so well with the rabbit. The rabbit was like a much juicier chicken breast. If you're on the fence about trying rabbit I think this is a good intro dish, given the strong flavors from the mole and the fact it's deboned The service was really friendly and efficient. They gave me a side of super tasty lima beans as a free side after I mentioned it was my first time. The ambiance is very nice without feeling alienating if you want to have a casual night out. Overall I can't recommend this place enough and hope to have the opportunity to come back someday! read more

We came here with a. Big group. While we were seated late, they offered up some free guacamole and chips that was delish. The spicy margarita then came to make the rest of the meal go down easy. Each thing I tried, I really enjoyed. The chochinita pibil was a terrific pork dish. I'm not a big Lima bean fan but these were cooked perfectly tender and I could not have enough of the sauce in this dish. I tried the tres leches dessert. It was very good but they had an ice cream sandwich special that I tried from another dinner mate that was superb. Our server was incredibly attentive and I enjoyed the interior vibe. An Amazing Food Experience !! I was looking for new food adventures in the East Market District when I stumbled upon the Mayan Cafe. I have had Mayan food before, prepared by Mayan friends, and I was very curious to experience Mayan food in a restaurant. My visit took place on a Thursday and I was lucky enough to walk in and get a seat right away before the restaurant filled up. My server was friendly and walked me through some of her favourites before I placed my order. I started with the Three Sisters Salad. The 'Three Sisters' in indigenous cultures are beans, corn and squash, and the Mayan Cafe's version of the 'Three Sisters' is beans, corn and squash that are locally sourced. The salad is a light and refreshing starter made with roasted corn, pickled butternut squash, garbanzo beans, jicama, pepitas, queso panela local and lightly tossed in a house-made mint vinaigrette. The salad was absolutely pleasant to eat. For the main course after being served a side of Tok-Sel lima beans, on-the-house was one of Mayan Cafe's signature dishes, the Cochinita Pibil and from Garey Farms slow-roasted local pork with an achiote sauce and pickled onions and surrounded by tok-sel lima beans. This dish was spectacular and I highly recommend it for anyone visiting the Mayan Cafe for the first time. The slow-roasted pork was tender and had the perfect amount of spices and flavour. For dessert, I had a Chocolate Torte and Ice Cream from a local Louisville Ice Cream maker. I finished my meal with a twenty-three-year-old rum to help wash everything down. The Mayan Cafe is unique and has exceptional food and it was a great place to start my East Market food adventure. read more
