This is a favorite spot to eat every time we come home to GF! Been a fan of the Fluffy Taco, Fat Alberto, Chili Relleno's since the first bite. We've been fans ever since Art opened in the Pin&Cue Bowling location. No one makes Chili Relleno's batter dipped like here! In states like Oregon & Washington where there's a large ethnic population; they're rolled in scrambled eggs & cooked (ick). And no place has the other items I mentioned. The tastes are unique. No where near authentic.. nowhere do I see where they could be inspired by New Mexico food .. I understand it's mostly native Americans and whites who live predominantly in this area but as a Mexican from California and has family from New Mexico it is not the best .. if you've ever had food from California you know authentic real good and this is not it . No offense to the workers they seemed very nice for the most part ... My waitress was a blonde woman who had fast service and brought my mixed drinks out with speed . Other than the "authentic" food I think everything else is cool. Our dear Friend loves coming here for the fluffy tacos. 11am the doors open and they already have people lined up! Two different salsa one a not spicy red salsa and one like a menudo salsa. We ordered Fluffy taco with guacamole and one with chicken. Side of beans and rice. You have to ask for sour cream and guacamole cause they don't provide it with the meal. read more

The manager of El Comedor took a customer's debit card and refused to give it back. After being told numerous times by the customer's bank that the payment had been taken out of their account multiple times. Manager refused to make the situation right, refused to call payment processing to see what was going on. The situation has still not been corrected three days later. Horrible horrible service. This manager took advantage of this gentlemen who had a hard time comprehending what was happening. There is no excuse. Unacceptable on all levels. Let's start with the good: Our server was cheerful and attentive, brought us exactly what we ordered, and left us both smiling. The ambiance? It was like a sports bar decorated with items found in a dollar store in East L.A. by a person whose entire knowledge of Mexican culture comes from listening to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. The food was equally off the mark. Overall, it was at the level one might expect to find in a casino or a bowling alley. Oh, right, there IS a casino. Look, I don't live in Great Falls, and I didn't grow up there. I do visit frequently for both business and pleasure, and I've found there's a lot to enjoy in the city and surrounding area if you take the time to look around. We've found several restaurants that we'll come back to as the food, service and ambiance were great. Not this one. Several reviews of El Comedor mention a longstanding affection for some of their menu items, and this left my wife and I scratching our heads. Have these people ever had traditional Mexican food? Do they think Taco Bell is traditional Mexican food? Let's start with the chile relleno, which I frequently order because there are so many ways to present it - it's a pretty good indicator of a restaurant's approach to the menu as a whole. This battered and deep fried thing looked and tasted like something you buy at the cotton candy trailer in a carnival, like a corn dog only without the charm. I found myself look for the stick. It was bland, barely melted mild cheddar stuffed into an Anaheim chile that showed no hint of being charred and roasted, more like it was run over by a hand truck and then died of boredom. The refried beans were so dry they retained the shape of the ice cream scoop used to drop them onto the plate. Lumps of whole pinto beans held together by some saliva-sucking substance, it looked like a construction material used to pave the area around a swimming pool. Only not as tasty. The most savory thing on the plate was the Spanish rice. What does that tell you? The table salsa was tomato sauce based, looking suspiciously like a certain well-known brand of industrial salsa you probably have in your refrigerator door that rhymes with "face." Similarly, the chips were unremarkable, thick, clumsy, dull, devoid of salt. Probably out of a bag from a store that sells food for a high blood pressure diet. The "fluffy taco" is the restaurant's "world famous" menu item. I can only assume they applied that boast after a visitor ate the cold, mealy, doughy pillow and flew home to London afterwards and puked it up in the back of a lorry. Again, no flavor, no spice, no personality. It was like my entire plate was in the witness protection program. My wife had the taco salad with chicken. The chicken meat was cooked, shredded and plated, completely free from the threat of any seasoning or flavor. Maybe that was the job of the unmarked glass dispenser on the table that was half full of what appeared to be Wishbone Italian salad dressing. A taste revealed it to be some kind of green chile salsa, a little hotter than the red children's version that came with the chips. The menu is one of the most limited I've seen in a Mexican restaurant. I do not believe there are any Mexicans involved in the preparation of the food. There can't be. The shredded yellow cheese that topped our food was not even melted, just scattered wistfully like rice at a wedding. It seems like this is a thriving restaurant, so clearly a lot of local people like it. To each their own; I'm not begrudging the restaurant their loyal clientele. This review is not for them. This review is for people like us, visitors who wander in hoping that three stars out of five indicated, at worse, some half-assed Mexican food. It didn't even live up to that. I can only conclude that this is a Mexican restaurant for people who don't like Mexican food. read more

Big prices for bland food. Maybe instead of putting a casino in your restaurant, you could've spent the time and money on staff. Consistently in this town there is a casino or alcohol driven businesses. The food is good, but they must hire felons a cooks as I have been there twice in the last 3 weeks to hear wholly offensive gangster rap emitting from the kitchen at high volume. This is not a family friendly atmosphere when I hear "s**k my motherf***ing d**k n****r" blasting from the kitchen. The reason I mention felons is I can't imagine anyone being able to tolerate working in that kind of language. I will not return. I may get something for pickup, but I would be appalled if I took my family and grandchildren here and have them hear that. read more

3 1/2 out of 5. Have eaten here numerous times over the years. Definitely an acquired taste. Raised in the N.E., Mexican food was a rarity for me. My first serious exposure was in Cheyenne, WY in the late 60's. The authentic and wonderful hole in the wall Mex places south of the tracks spoiled me for life. Most Mex places we have eaten at since pale in comparison. This menu offers so-so options with two notable exceptions... the Fat Alberto and their salsa. We stopped as a family here after seeing they're always busy. I do not know why. The menu is 6 items if I remember correctly and we tried the whole menu because it. Only one of us liked our meal. Our server was terrible, often forgetting us and then making a joke about how she did. She brought us menus only after we asked for them and then waited 20 minutes to return for drink orders, then 13 minute later brought them out with a laugh about dropping our drinks in route. Came back 20 minutes later wondering why our food wasn't out, only to laugh when we said we haven't ordered yet. Once we ordered our food did arrive quickly and then our server was gone again. Never got refills, though we asked and after 90 minutes of an overall unenjoyable experience we paid and left as she then sheepishly laughed saying please come again, I swear I'm just having a bad night. Very bad food. I was super optimistic walking into this place. I order the chicken fajitas. On the plate we're about 3 strands of onions and bell peppers sautéed.The chicken was placed on top with no flavor warmed up out of a bag of frozen chicken bought from the store. The beans were hard with lots of pepper flavor. The rice taste like something foreign. Disgusted by this place. The cook in the back was scratching his head while he cooked or scratching a pimple on the side of his head. I can't believe this restaurant is still open. Good luck while trying place. Stopped in here to eat on a visit to my Hometown. So glad I came back. The fluffy tacos are awesome and flavorful and are topped with a radish. I tried a chile relleno at this place for the 1st time and I am so glad I did. It is deep fried like it should be with no sauce to take away from the flavor. The heat level was phenomenal and I would definitely get it again. The salsa had flavor, but a few too many onions for me, and the service was great. So glad it is still here. read more

Still great! I have moved out of state, but was in Great Falls last week to visit friends. A must stop was at El Comedor for fluffy tacos! It was just as tasty as when I went in the 70's, located in the bowling alley. It was packed but service was fast, friendly and efficient!! Knocking them down one star as the chips/salsa and guacamole were sub par. Those Mexican staples need a flavor improvement but otherwise, great!!! read more

Drinks were alright, not sure if this establishment's rating is due to the drinks but boy the food was absolute trash. I ordered a crunchy taco. It had more lettuce and cheese then meat which was maybe more a blessing. The meat was almost a pate consistency and quiet frankly was unappetizing after the first bite I couldn't eat any more due to it tasting so off. My friend's food tasted the same, we paid for everything and went somewhere else. Only giving a two star because of the drinks other than that I'd rather go somewhere else for food. read more

What can I say? I live in Denver now, and have for 20 years. I grew up on the fluffy tacos as I was a Great Falls native. Everyone knows there are 3 places to hit in the Falls: El Comedor, Howard's, and Taco Treat. The fat Alberto is a go-to, and the chile con queso is simple but tasty. I re-created a fluffy shell here, using a different method, and was very proud of myself. read more

We're late eaters, and this place is open late. Sometimes we go into a place that isn't too busy and can immediately feel like we're an inconvenience. Not here! The service is ALWAYS courteous and welcoming, and I am convinced that the late eaters get the best tacos. read more
