We very much enjoyed it here. Only wish it was more open to the beautiful outdoors. The service was excellent. They had a saxophone player and it was great. For appetizers we got the bone marrow, displayed beautifully and tasted good. Also got the octopus which was very good and big too. We also got the mushroom appetizer not sure the name but also very pretty and tasty. For our meals we got the chicken dish and it was pretty good. There is a dress code especially for men. This is a elegant fine dining situation. Live music at least tonight there was The portions were on the small side which i liked. Safe room for dessert. Several things were not included in our all inclusive package but thats the situation with all on this plan. Never been to all inclusive that so much isnt included. Honestly, I am disappointed. I used to look forward to coming here every year and each time I come back it declines in quality and portion sizes. This restaurant is located in the Royal Islander Hotel. They serve what would best be described as international cuisine--a little bit of everything. They have some interesting dishes (like mussels Rockefeller). The food is ok and so is the service. If you're staying at the hotel, it might be a good option if you don't feel like going out to dinner, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. read more

It has been a while since our trip so I don't remember exactly what we ate, but I've continuously thought about our memorable experience. We had table side Caesar salad as well as banana flambé. We got a lobster empanada, a cheese empanada, 3 chicken empanadas, and 2 bottle of coke, simple delish and all that for $7.50 USD including a tip! definitely recommend this place for a simple and delicious lunch. We've been coming to Cancun for over 20 years. Sometimes we go to outside restaurants and other times we purchase the all inclusive and stay within our resort options. There is no reason to visit other restaurants when you have the most elegant, outstanding and fine French cuisine and the friendly, impeccable service at the El Conquistador at the Royal Islander Resort. We've been there many times and the entire wait staff and food are outstanding. You are greeted by Victor with a big friendly smile and Alejandro, our waiter, remembered us from the year before. Everyone is very personable, it truly feels like family. We ate at the El conquistador 4 times during our 2 week visit. Everything was delicious. I must also mention that there is music several evenings during the week. We were entertained and enjoyed a violinist, a saxophonist and the outstanding music played by Jorge Duran on his guitar. And then, just as you leave, they thank you for coming and they are sincerely grateful that you patronized their establishment. This is by far the best restaurant in all of Cancun. It saddens me that this is the Royal Islander's last year and once it is closed the future of the El Conquistador is unknown at this time. I'm hoping that they will move up to the Royal Sands. Were not pushy when we were sitting around at the end. EXP: Dark decor, nothing that will blow your socks off. Located in the Royal Islander. VALUE: Slightly more expensive than the other resort restaurants but well worth it. Average dish 300-500 pesos. Mixed drinks were 110 pesos and had appropriate alcohol. El Conquistador is an upscale type of American style restaurant that has been on Royal Resorts property for many years. While a good substitute for what we have come to expect at home it is good but perhaps average compared to what we are familiar with. I had the filet mignon which was good and a very large piece to be sure. My family had seafood based dishes that were also good but not spectacular. In summary, nice atmosphere and OK food but do yourself a favor and head to a real Mexican spot.Of course there is an abundance of these and save your desire for American food for when you're back in the good old US. read more

Looking for a restaurant in Cancun that offers true fine dining? One that exhibits dishes that are tempting, exciting and presented in a truly unique way? Then the El Conquistador restaurant is a high end but intimate steakhouse that resides in the Royal Islander Hotel may just be the place for you as you travel through Cancun. It is located where their three restaurants converge right off of their pool area. Although we stayed at the Royal Caribbean Hotel next door, since they were sister hotels we were able to get reservations through our hotel concierge. I was worried be issues over the fact that they apparently have a dress code and I didn't have the right clothes for a formal dinner, but after checking with the manager, he was nice enough to let us in anyway. (They're very lenient as a dining companion also wore shorts to dinner!) Inside the dining room is very romantic, as it is dimly lit with a hint of light from their fire lit walls. The food is rather seafood inspired with a hint of a traditional steakhouse, so American tourists staying nearby would be well served to dine here at least one night. Our server's at El Conquistador was Angel and when we asked him which of the tempting dishes he recommended we try, he suggested the mussels and the mushrooms but we went with the Fruits de Mer Citrus Ceviche which came with a plethora of seafood choices including mahi-mahi, shrimp, mango and lime topped with provencal seasoning and a citrus-mint vinaigrette and the nicely plated Oyster Rockefeller to start off and both dishes were perfect way to begin our meal with a little seafood delight. There were a lot of strong choices for dinner, from duck confit enchiladas to filet mignon, after much thought I went with the Steak Diane Medallions which were sautéed with mushrooms and onions and served with Cabernet Sauvignon sauce. The fun part of the dish was that was prepared for you right at your table cooked to perfection from our server Angel. It was flavorful and well seasoned on top of being fun to watch. We has a great meal sitting at the round table in the corner of the restaurant catching up and enjoying our meal, which is what our vacation is supposed to be all about. For dessert, we got the Flambéed Bananas which was a real show an treat as it was flambeed with a rind of an orange topped with liquor. The El Conquistador restaurant was the best meal we had in Cancun hands down, not only was the food really high-end but at an affordable price point but the ambiance was romantic and sexy and that's hard to pull off at an all-inclusive resort. El Conquistador is the restaurant that will be on my to return to list whenever I'm lucky enough to visit Cancun again. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. Expectations weren't high because this was another resort all inclusive, but the food was delicious and the atmosphere wonderful with live music! For appetizer, I had the seafood stuffed portobello mushroom. Every bite was filled with flavorful, seafood goodness that was in a mouthwatering sauce. Next up was the lobster bisque. The taste of lobster was strong, but in my opinion the soup was too salty and thick. After soup, waiters brought us lime sorbet to cleanse our palates which was great. My entree was the seafood stuffed fish. Again, everything was seasoned nicely. The fish was tender and paired with another yummy sauce. I expected to end the night with a great dessert, but it was not on par with the rest of my food. I ordered the flan and it tasted strange. Sadly, there was a strong alcohol/coffee flavor that overwhelmed the dessert. Overall, props to this restaurant. Presentation of the food was beautiful and the taste itself was definitely head and shoulders above the other I tried at the resort. read more

As a Royal owner, my family and I have enjoyed El Conquistador many times over the past years. I am sorry to say that this will be our last visit. The only things that remain the same are Jorge on acoustic guitar and the wait staff (Wilburth was great!). Negatives included: 1. Food quality. My steak was tough and poorly prepared with cool bake potato that could not melt the frozen butter. My guests had the shrimp and one or two shrimps were under cooked. Attention to detail was missing. 2. Ambiance. This small intimate restaurant has now turned into a loud obnoxious place with some clientele dressed in tee shirts and cutoffs. Obviously the dress code is now loosely enforced. The affiliation with the all inclusive plan has greatly deterred the quality of the clientele and resulting ambiance. 3. Room Temperature. We were very uncomfortably warm during our dining. We informed the Maitre d but he was unable to make any improvements. Bottom line is that this place, which was near and dear to our hearts for years, has declined greatly. I attribute some of the blame to the Maitre D and the rest to the all inclusive meal system that forces the restaurant to compromise its values and great history. Save your money and look elsewhere as there are many wonderful restaurants nearby. read more

The dressing code(smart casual) is different from the actual defination of 'smart casual'. Also the waiter in the restaurant cannot explain the dressing requirement clearly. So we were rejected to come in without a reasonable explanation. We spent almost one hour asking the hotel supervisor and we made sense about the exact dressing rules. Incredible experience from beginning to end. My husband and I were married at the Royal Sands on Friday and had heard wonderful things about this restaurant. We were so excited to easily snag a reservation via the Royal Dining app for Sunday and hopped on the shuttle to the Royal Islander to check it out. It is a very romantic restaurant with a fine dining atmosphere. Our waiter, Jose, was so kind and his recommendations were spot on. The Tuna Ceviche appetizer was fresh and full of flavor. The Steak Diane Medallions were cooked table side TO PERFECTION and melted in your mouth. My husband's El Conquistador Pasta had an authentic, fresh seafood flavor. We finished off with cheesecake and key lime pie and my husband ordered the Mayan coffee...they wrote "happy honeymoon" in chocolate on our desserts and put on an amazing table side show putting together the Mayan coffee. We are so happy to have been given such an amazing experience. Truly unforgettable and we will be back! read more

The place looks great since the last time we were there but the service has declined a bit. I went with four people and the salads for two of us came very late. My wife and I had to wait to eat ours out of courtesy to them. By the way the Ceasar salad had no taste. My guests had the lamb dish and the chops were very touch and several of them very raw. They did replace the meals but the whole evening was off for us. This has always been a great place in the past and I doubt I'll be going there in the future. read more

Lovely spot with elegant atmosphere but uneven dress code-- husband was asked to change from a nice but collarless shirt to one with a collar, while a young woman was latter seated at the table next to us in ripped jeans and a logo tee, and other young girls were wearing jean shorts. This is a a nice restaurant choice while on the all inclusive package at the Royal resorts. As always, you can eat here without being part of the package and pay. The atmosphere is my favorite part about this restaurant. The staff is very friendly and attentive. There is a man playing a guitar after about 7pm which is a nice added touch to your good meal. All in all the food is great. There are options for all including steaks and seafood. My husband really enjoyed the coffee crusted snapper. We were staying here and kept this place for the last night. We had eaten all week for lunch next door in the cheaper restuarant which was great bar food, sandwhichs and an awesome breakfast. During the week we had Ruth Chirs and Casa Rolinda so we were expecting to finish storng...we were disappointed. The appetizers were ok, ceaser salad very good. The meals were bland and not well cooked. My son had lamb, which was ok, the wife a steal which was overcooked and I had shrimp , which I really didnt like the taste of. Second, it's entirely possible to have a phenomenal meal without any surcharge. We did opt for filet and our bill ending up being a whopping $20. Well worth it. I never really cared for this restaurant when it was at The Royal Mayan. I think a lot had to do with the ambiance and noise level. Now that it is located at The Royal Islander, I've become a big fan. It is a beautiful restaurant and our dinner was excellent. The Maitre De was quite helpful in getting us a wonderful table...he is a very hands on person...we even saw him wiping every menu that was brought to him after patrons placed their order. He also brought the chef out to visit with diners when he could get out of the kitchen. For all who have always enjoyed this restaurant, you will really like the new restaurant and if you haven't been here in a while, you need to give it a try...I''m glad we did! read more

Went here with another couple unsure of what to expect. Pleasantly surprised by the 5 star quality of service that we were given. The house bread was by far the best I've tasted and was a great start to the meal. I had French onion soup as my appetizer. It was good but wasn't the best I've had. I ordered the special of the day which was prime rib and it was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. This place has nailed the details of service that you don't find very often. I write this with having been happy with most Royal Resort restaurants and fought to get reservations tat this particular one during my wife and I's last night in Cancun. The staff is nice though you'll be told no shorts and see plenty with them on but t-shirts are unacceptable as they should be at a higher caliber restaurant. The first 20 minutes of a great guitarist, ambience, and service had us happy with our starters of lobster bisque and French onion soup. Our water glasses were filled reasonably quick with replacement lemonades (enough drinking during the week) brought out for myself. After ordering our main course it became evident that we became an after thought for our waiter and his assistant with water not being filled for long stretches and no offer to replace my lemonade. The New York strip with "twice baked potato" was not good and I truly felt I could get better at an Applebee's. Due to watching the clock I realized nobody came to our table to check on us for 25 minutes and we flagged down someone to get our check so we could depart. Extremely overrated from what I was given the impression of what this place offered. Overpriced and underwhelming! read more

First, I only give it 4stars since I only visited once and I like to keep the 5stars for restaurants I have gone regularly. As a Royal Resorts full inclusive client, this is one place I was recommended to try. Since our concierge, Socorro was nice enough to get our reservations ready for us with knowing days in advanced, we had no trouble with that. The atmosphere was nice and fancy, but not overwhelming- it a is a casual formal attire establishment. The live guitar music was also very enjoyable and the musician was friendly with the costumers. The attention here was amazing, and classy just as expected of such restaurant. Although the welcoming host was a bit cold, the other staff and our waiter Javier (I believe that was his name, but I will correct it after confirming), was a joy to talk to. He took care of our every need, and our wine (ordered a bottle that was kept chilled by the table) or water glasses were never empty for long. As a starter I had a Vegetable Ceviche, which is possibly the one of the best things that I have ever tasted. The blend of fresh ingredients and sweet and citrus flavors was perfect. My steak was also delicious and cooked to a perfect medium point, they were also lenient to my picky food choices, which I always appreciate. I finished off with a espresso and a chocolate cake, which were the right way to end a wonderful and enjoyable dinner. I can't speak for my family and what they ate, but we all left very full and satisfied. I will surely return in my next vacation to Cancun. read more
