Okay let's get this out of the way first, this is generally known as a gay club and if you are homophobic, then what are doing reading this review? Since it doesn't matter what it says you will automatically hate it, heck you probably already dislike the joint. So stop here and go read an article on wresting or something. If you are not, then lets continue on... Alright, hands down I have to say this is one of the best clubs in Toronto. Yes, it is a gay club (although these days? Barely) either way, liking the place says nothing about my own sexuality. I know what I am, I like girls, some of the patrons don't, big deal. If you are open minded and have 'a live and let live' attitude then you will have a lot of fun here. My first time there, which was like 12 years ago, was when a few friends took me there to listen to some acid jazz. There used to be a pool table and we were two guys and three girls. After an hour or so, I ask one of my friends 'Hey, how come there are hardly any girls here?' ........ 'AHHHHH.... REALLY? WHY DID YOU BRING ME HERE?!!' They all laughed at my expense. Those bastards! :P Anyway, I have hosted tons of parties there over the years for a few simple reasons. You see, I run Toronto's largest Spanish speaking language club (did that sound like a plug? I did not want it to sound like one, oh well...C'est la vie ) and although all of my members know how to speak Spanish --even if they are not fully fluent; not ALL of them can dance to Spanish music. So Convento is pretty good at mixing it up between Top 40's, hiphop and Salsa/Merengue/Chacha with a bit of Bachata. No other club in Toronto does that. Trust me, I have looked. See, other Spanish clubs, like Babalu, Plaza Flamingo, Lula Lounge do have their strengths of course but their nights usually consist of either 6 hours of Salsa, or 6 hours of Cuban Salsa with about 25 minutes of Merengue and 10 minutes of Bachata for the couples hitting it off. No gringo music. :-) Remember, if you are Latin, chances are you were raised dancing to Spanish music, so no big deal, but go with a group of 40 people who half don't know how to dance, or how to dance Spanish music well, and you can begin to appreciate the charm of this place. I celebrated one birthday there a few years ago and we got the leather couches in the back. Staff was more than friendly, professional and even set up some balloons in our area which were a little tacky but well meaning. So no one minded and in the end, it was appreciated. The club is underground so it has this cavern feel to it. It is well lit and people really come out to have real fun. People dance, chat, meet and socialise. We normally leave way pass 1:00am-2:00am. It reminds me, of a Latin club in many ways that people are not as stiff as in other clubs. The only issue of course is that since it is a dance club, once the DJ starts spinning, you won't be having any serious philosophical conversations on the sensual undertones of Bachata over Zouk music. They do have a Drag Queen show at midnight. Everyone always get into it, since it is kinda different. Again, if you see it for what it is: *a performance,* instead of a defining point of your sexuality, which is not, then you will find it entertaining. They did have a male stripper once before... not my thing, but the girls seem to like it. A lot. Great place to bring out-of-towners who want to try something different. Or if they are from a proverbial 'small town' and you want to freak them out if they happen to reside on the sheltered side. They only sell beer in bottles and they cost about the same as any other club/bar. Wish they had draft, oh, and cover is $10+. As far as negatives, this place does not have any that you would not find at any other club. Aside that, if you want to dance, have fun, are social and more specifically, do not suffer from homophobia, then you will have a great time! Fun Fact: If you are straight and single, just remember, this place holds TONS of Bachelorette parties every Friday and Saturday. For those who are slow on the uptake, that's a lot of likely single women willing to have a good time. Last time I was there I counted 16 bachelorette parties and the club ratio was something like 2 girls for every guy. And let's assume every third guy was gay. Do the math guys. Those are good odds for ya'. :P

I am in no way a clubber.. at least any more; this girl grew up. Very few clubs have left the type of impression on me that it is THE place to be on a Friday or Saturday night. It really is in the company you keep. El Convento Rico might be the exception - not to say I'll go without my homegirls, but it is a place that serves up some entertainment that your usual Dance Caves or Devils Martinis do not provide. Will you still be oggled and eyed like a prime piece of meat there? Some things you can't avoid, regardless of your gender. But this Latin dance club also offers a fun drag-queen floor show and salsalicious music to dance to and is a welcoming place for gays and straights alike. Why 3 stars and not 4 or 5? Well, it is still a nightclub :) But file this under AWESOME: There' was an entertainer there named Lola Banana. When my friends come to visit from our small hometown of Thunder Bay, this is the place I take them to when they're looking for some nightlife fun that they can't find back home. We're not in Scuttlebutts anymore.

Absolutely fabulous. Drag shows a must-see.

In the few times I've gone it always feels like there's something special going on at the Mother House. Drag shows make for an exciting night of festivities. Any and everyone can just be themselves and let loose on a Friday or Saturday night. Both nights I have observed to be fairly packed and very busy. Very fun. Love it. Absolutely fabulous. Music is great.

The place is fun but sweaty, the music is awsome, the bartenders are great, the bouncers are shit. The crowd is nice and full of girls.

Edited a minute ago New…read moreUpon entering the establishment, the security guard took our IDs and he was holding a high-alcohol content beer, Hayburner, in one hand, and holding our ID's with the other. He seemed angry when my brother asked if our ID's had to be scanned, and really seemed to snap at my brother, but we shrugged it off and he scanned them and we went on with our night. Throughout the night, the security guard continued drinking these Hayburners. My brother and I were enjoying our evening, had not once had any issue with another patron or the bar, and we were in mid-conversation about piano, when I felt the guard standing behind me. He was just standing behind me, staring my brother down. It was a scary feeling. My brother, who has worked in the industry for 20 years, asked if everything was okay. The security guard approached my brother and started pushing him saying "Everything is okay with me is everything okay with you??" And my brother was walking backwards trying to de-escalate this seemingly intoxicated security guard. That's when I watched him grab my brother by both shoulders and push him backwards across the entire length of the bar, knocking him into people and objects, eventually pushing him out of the door. He even grabbed another guy and shoved him so hard against the wall that that guys beer went flying and he had purple and blue bruises from his grab. I desperately tried for the other woman security guard to understand he had just been assaulted and had done nothing wrong. She seemed to nod like she had seen this before, but wasn't going to do anything about it. My sister and I were astounded at the actions of this man. That's when he shoved me, a mid thirties woman not even half his size. Even after we were walking away from the bar, this security guard stood outside yelling towards us that he, direct quote, was going to "break our f***ng necks". This is negligence on the bar's behalf, for allowing an intoxicated security guard to a$$ault patrons. We immediately filed a police report, and they requested the video footage from the bar. The bar refused to provide any of the footage. Usually, bars who have nothing to hide are quick to comply- which was very telling in this case. We were never once asked to leave. We were just blind-sighted. I immediately called the bar after the incident and one of the owners, Amanda, who was tending the bar and witnessed the entire thing, cheerfully answered the phone. She had served my brother with no issue. I let her know her security guard had just assaulted us, and she said "ok?" And nothing further. This place does not give a rip about anyone's safety, especially not women's. It has been weeks and I'm still recovering from the pain of this night. Beware for your safety, women. I did what I could, but their actions will likely result in someone getting seriously hurt.

It was terrifying. I could've lost my brother, and we didn't even know why. For your own safety, don't fight back if confronted like this, report it instead. Paper trails save lives. On a brighter note: my brother absolutely crushed it on the mic earlier that night.

Overall good vibe,…read more We signed up for guest list the morning of, so our cover was only $5 since we went before 11:30 PM (P.S you don't get a confirmation for the guest list, just sign up before the 9:30 PM deadline and you're pretty much on) The security at the front do a super thorough body check so at least your know the place is kept safe. Music was good, bathrooms were clean, but god damn, the reason for my 2/5 rating is because of the DJ. Let's just call him...10 second switch! Because that's right, 10 seconds after they start planning a song and you realize what the song is...BAM! Change of song! And while you might think that fast switches make for a solid variety of music, it ends up just giving you a headache. You can never really dance or sing to any of the songs because they kept switching so fast. Although the music was decent, this factor was kinda annoying and caused us head out early and just call it a night. I might return one day since everything else about the club was great, here's just hoping they have a new DJ by then...

I came here twice. The first time was okay since it was NYE so the music was better but the second…read moretime was terrible. My sister, her friend and I all agreed that it was the right choice to leave the club after 30 minutes. The club was upscale with the 2 weird gold statues and palm trees. The lightings and sound system were okay. NYE: The crowd was young and wild (it's nice to put it that way). Honestly, it was filled with people who just finally reached their legal age of drinking and alcoholics. It also had few butt-grabbing lovers and pervs. A guy held me up despite the fact that I tried hard to push him away and my sister's friends had to ruthlessly asking him to put me down. I was pissed because the bouncers didn't do anything about it. TWICE! THAT GUY CAME BACK TWICE AND THE BOUNCERS IGNORE IT!!!! The club was filled with drunk people as well. They were drunk, they didn't know what they were doing and again the bouncers just ignored them. They fell on the floor multiple times, stepped on my shoes, stole my NY hat and my glow sticks. The floor was wet and sticky. Broken glasses everywhere because someone decided to just throw their shot glasses there. The DJ was good tho! Second time I came back here: No, the music was just....slow and boring. I think it was for grinding lovers. Grinders were everywhere: at the booths, close to the pole, next to the statues.. everywhere! I ordered Jägerbomb and the bartender gave me Jack bomb which was really nasty (not a fan of Jack Daniel's) A convenient place if you decide to have some fun after a movie or Dave & Buster's but for sure you will have better experience with club scene downtown. Free parking tho:) But I'd rather go downtown, pay for a parking spot, and pay same price (or even cheaper) for cover, music, and drinks.

The Owner Jazz offers great customer service, stays cool with his clientele. Where front door people sometimes get a bad rap, Front doorman Peter is very nice and friendly. Nice Clean washrooms. Taxes and gratitude included it was 230.00 ($31.00 gratitude a little steep) for a party of 5 there was no cover due to the bottle service. The demographics of the club are older 40ish, our group is in our early 30s. The music was a combination of hip hop/ R&B/ Top Forty Hits/ some 80s & 90s. We had a great time dancing, and I would highly encourage the almost 30 something's crowd to just give it a try! It was fun, not too crowded everyone kinda sticks to themselves and has a good time. Overall I would definitely return, the icing on my birthday cake was the complimentary champagne we were given to CHEERS my birthday.
