A club with consistently good music, vibes, and staff. El Convento Rico is a latin nightclub that offers some of the best vibes in city. Located downstairs at the listed address, you'll more than likely see a lineup formed after 11pm. What I like about this spot is that from the multiple times I've been here, whenever I've been willing to wait in line, I have not had a problem getting in with a moderate wait time. The security here are pretty chill and aren't full of themselves like you'll find at other clubs in the city. When you get inside, the layout of the club isn't the best, but I do enjoy that it is a single room open concept with plenty of room for the dance floor. The washrooms here are usually pretty clean as well. Bartenders leave a little to be desired in regards to hospitality, but I feel that it isn't a chore to get their attention and they are quick to take your order. The best part about this club is easily the music and vibes. Consistently this place will have a good playlist going with the DJs maintaining the vibe as the night goes on. Crowds will flood the dance floor and join in on singing to popular parts of songs, while some will take part in some pretty good latin style dancing. The club does host drag shows during the night, so if you are a fan I implore to come here for a night of fun. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of the timing of the drag shows because I feel it sometimes takes away time that could be spent dancing on the dance floor as the show will take up the entire centre of the dance floor at prime times of the night. Nonetheless, El Convento has become one of my go to clubs in the city. Do I think it's the best in the city? No. But, would I agree to come here at the first mention of it? Came to this club with my boyfriend. One of the drag queens loli fantasia began following us around the club and it was extremely disturbing and uncomfortable. Wherever we would sit she would stand right next to our table. Wherever we would stand she would be right there. It was extremely obvious what she was doing and My boyfriend kept telling me she wouldn't stop staring at him from across the room and everytime I told him I would talk to her he about it. He told me he didn't want to cause any type of commotion in the club. This experience was highly disappointing as me and my boyfriend were looking forward to having fun in the club not be stalked by a drag queen with an obvious fetish for black men. There was a small wait on a Saturday night. It was $15 for cover, which I found to be a bit more than usual. There was a sign indicating that they take cash or card. However, the bar is cash only - which was a disappointment to me since I find that most bars and clubs do take card now. I got the vibe that they just let anyone in because it was extremely crowded inside. It was so, SO hot inside and hard to breathe. The coat check line was the longest I've ever been in... went all the way to the back where the bathrooms were. We probably waited about 15 minutes just for coat check. The bar was overcrowded and it looked like they were understaffed because it took forever to order a drink. There were tons of people working on the floor to clear the drinks/bottles but definitely not enough bartenders. The music was a good mixture of everything: latin / salsa / top 40s / throwback. They have drag shows which were pretty fun to watch! They all do a very good job of hyping everyone up. Okay let's get this out of the way first, this is generally known as a gay club and if you are homophobic, then what are doing reading this review? Since it doesn't matter what it says you will automatically hate it, heck you probably already dislike the joint. So stop here and go read an article on wresting or something. If you are not, then lets continue on... Alright, hands down I have to say this is one of the best clubs in Toronto. Yes, it is a gay club (although these days? Barely) either way, liking the place says nothing about my own sexuality. I know what I am, I like girls, some of the patrons don't, big deal. If you are open minded and have 'a live and let live' attitude then you will have a lot of fun here. My first time there, which was like 12 years ago, was when a few friends took me there to listen to some acid jazz. There used to be a pool table and we were two guys and three girls. After an hour or so, I ask one of my friends 'Hey, how come there are hardly any girls here?' ........ 'AHHHHH.... REALLY? WHY DID YOU BRING ME HERE?!!' They all laughed at my expense. Those bastards! :P Anyway, I have hosted tons of parties there over the years for a few simple reasons. You see, I run Toronto's largest Spanish speaking language club (did that sound like a plug? I did not want it to sound like one, oh well...C'est la vie ) and although all of my members know how to speak Spanish --even if they are not fully fluent; not ALL of them can dance to Spanish music. So Convento is pretty good at mixing it up between Top 40's, hiphop and Salsa/Merengue/Chacha with a bit of Bachata. No other club in Toronto does that. Trust me, I have looked. See, other Spanish clubs, like Babalu, Plaza Flamingo, Lula Lounge do have their strengths of course but their nights usually consist of either 6 hours of Salsa, or 6 hours of Cuban Salsa with about 25 minutes of Merengue and 10 minutes of Bachata for the couples hitting it off. No gringo music. :-) Remember, if you are Latin, chances are you were raised dancing to Spanish music, so no big deal, but go with a group of 40 people who half don't know how to dance, or how to dance Spanish music well, and you can begin to appreciate the charm of this place. I celebrated one birthday there a few years ago and we got the leather couches in the back. Staff was more than friendly, professional and even set up some balloons in our area which were a little tacky but well meaning. So no one minded and in the end, it was appreciated. The club is underground so it has this cavern feel to it. It is well lit and people really come out to have real fun. People dance, chat, meet and socialise. We normally leave way pass 1:00am-2:00am. It reminds me, of a Latin club in many ways that people are not as stiff as in other clubs. The only issue of course is that since it is a dance club, once the DJ starts spinning, you won't be having any serious philosophical conversations on the sensual undertones of Bachata over Zouk music. They do have a Drag Queen show at midnight. Everyone always get into it, since it is kinda different. Again, if you see it for what it is: *a performance,* instead of a defining point of your sexuality, which is not, then you will find it entertaining. They did have a male stripper once before... not my thing, but the girls seem to like it. A lot. Great place to bring out-of-towners who want to try something different. Or if they are from a proverbial 'small town' and you want to freak them out if they happen to reside on the sheltered side. They only sell beer in bottles and they cost about the same as any other club/bar. Wish they had draft, oh, and cover is $10+. As far as negatives, this place does not have any that you would not find at any other club. Aside that, if you want to dance, have fun, are social and more specifically, do not suffer from homophobia, then you will have a great time! Fun Fact: If you are straight and single, just remember, this place holds TONS of Bachelorette parties every Friday and Saturday. For those who are slow on the uptake, that's a lot of likely single women willing to have a good time. Last time I was there I counted 16 bachelorette parties and the club ratio was something like 2 girls for every guy. And let's assume every third guy was gay. Do the math guys. This place is insanely daring and crazy! I entered and went down tthe stairs and it was nothing i expected!!! I thought I was just going to sway my hips away and dance to each song but there was so much more!!! This place gets you in the best mood and its a party come to life!!! I am in no way a clubber.. at least any more; this girl grew up. Very few clubs have left the type of impression on me that it is THE place to be on a Friday or Saturday night. It really is in the company you keep. El Convento Rico might be the exception - not to say I'll go without my homegirls, but it is a place that serves up some entertainment that your usual Dance Caves or Devils Martinis do not provide. Will you still be oggled and eyed like a prime piece of meat there? Some things you can't avoid, regardless of your gender. But this Latin dance club also offers a fun drag-queen floor show and salsalicious music to dance to and is a welcoming place for gays and straights alike. Why 3 stars and not 4 or 5? Well, it is still a nightclub :) But file this under AWESOME: There' was an entertainer there named Lola Banana. When my friends come to visit from our small hometown of Thunder Bay, this is the place I take them to when they're looking for some nightlife fun that they can't find back home. Was here Friday July 3rd with my sister and a good friend visiting from out of town. We danced until closing and had the best time. I love that they play latin and salsa music as well as some top 40, they really appeal to a variety of people. Not only is there variety in the music but El Convento is super gay friendly and even has a drag show which is super fun and really gets the crowd going. I met straight guys and gay guys and had the best time. It was fun to groove to the music in my own way and see the couples dancing who actually knew how to dance to the salsa music they played. The bartender did give my sister a bit of attitude after she expressed her disappointment that she kept serving people who'd come after us but we were eventually served and went on with our night. She scolded my sister saying "do you see how busy I am"! Busy or not as a bartender you should be used to multitasking and having a slight grasp on who's been waiting 10 minutes and who has just arrived at the bar. Overall a great time and excellent alternative to bro-y bars that serve up only top 40 and rap. read more

This place was fun many years ago. Now it's filled with troublemakers and expensive drinks. This place is much more expensive than it needs to be. It's a bit of a dive. We witnessed three separate fights on the dance floor last night, with one gentlemen left a bloody mess. The security did a good job in handling the fights. The blame appears to fall solely on the non-LGBT clientele. Even though this is a popular place for the LGBT community, the male/female troublemakers were clearly heterosexuals, either drunk or simply there to cause drama. Ended up here for my friends Birthday - she is from Peru so this was a perfect place for her to remember her latino roots. I was quiet shocked to find that this place had a good mix of Gays and Straights. I thought the straight people would steer clear of this place, however many enjoy the Drag show - who knew! $10 C0VER CHARGE You should get there before midnight so you can watch the Drag show. It gets quiet busy and you end up getting pushed towards the back so if you're short you probably won't be able to see. I think it's a little distasteful that crowd gets up there with $5 bills in their mouth for the "entertainers" to give you a sexy dance... not my cup of tea. I'm a see no touch kinda girl lol. After the show people spill onto the dancefloor and it becomes a typical club. Good mix of music - mostly Top40 along with some Latin music mixed in. Their lighting is absolutely horrible. The strobe lights are right in your face I felt like I was going to have a seizure. I wouldn't come back here because of the crowd. I don't know if it's always like this - but 4 FIGHTS broke out while we were there and they got pretty intense. Security had break up too many fights with people wanting to kill one another and one young girl who was getting beat up by her boyfriend? Very scary. *** 3.5 stars *** I was at El Convento Rico last night for my friend's bachelorette. To my surprise, we were not the only bachelorette at the club. Apparently, El Convento Rico is known to have a lot of groups for special occasions. The neat thing about the club is that they have a drag show on Saturday night that starts at 12:30am. The dance floor is cleared and folks just watch and cheer. If you are really into it, you can be a part of the dance by tipping the dancers. It was great energy in the crowd, the drag show was the highlight of the night. The dance floor for El Convento Rico was quick big, right in the middle of club. One of things you need to bring with you is cash. The bar is cash only but cheap drinks (around $6). Cover is only $10, no bad for Toronto. Arrive early on Friday and Saturday nights to avoid line up. Even with the frigid cold on a January night, there were quite a few people out! The crowd was great, unpretentious and very mixed. Young, old, straight, gay...you name it you can find it at El Convento Rico, which makes people watching super fun. Make it out to El Convento Rico if you are looking for a great night out. With the exception of one bartender with an attitude, El Convento Rico was a pretty laid back place for some fun dancing. As a destination, gimmicky club whose selling point is its drag show, it draws in huge crowds of bachelorettes and birthday parties. The music - very danceable. The crowd - mostly lively, chill people out for a night of fun. We had signed up on the guestlist and were told to be there before midnight for the 12:30am drag show. At the door, there was a small line up that moved pretty quickly. The bouncer however, told us there was no guest list. What's the point of signing up for a guest list if it doesn't really exist? Tip: the drag show happens in the middle of the dance floor. There will be an announcement, and then bouncers will start pushing people back to form a circle for the 'stage'. Get to the middle of the room before they start doing this and when they do start the show, you'll be guaranteed a front row seat! read more

This is advertised as a gay-friendly club but it really is not. I was with my girlfriend this past weekend. We experienced homophobic comments and just had a really horrible time with all the straight guys around. They're grabby, touchy, and desperate, which is expected. The homophobia however was intense and intimidating. We are gay latinas and just want to find a good place to dance! The drag shows were pretty nice - but that would be the only pro at this club. This was the first gay bar my friend took me to years ago. The second time, they denied me entry because I was wearing a baseball cap. I went to ELC this past Saturday with four other friends. I was not prepared for this but they had a male stripper. Eventually the performance consists of female volunteers with the stripper pretending to have sex with each other on the dance floor. I quickly left the crowd to join my group of friends that were hiding in the back. Reading other peoples comments on here made me realize I was right about the type of crowd it was hosting. I was really disappointed to see how the night had transformed into. If I had read comments on here prior, there is no way in hell I would attend an event like this, especially a bachelorette party. So a warning to gay boys that expect the club to be all hot men, don't bother, 95.5% of the guys are straight. It is mostly straight people trying to pick up. I've only been here for their anniversary events about 4 times but I must say that it's been a night to (try to) remember each time (after drinks, I say "try to"). I have not tried heading this way on other nights so I cannot honestly say whether it would be as great. I can say that the music has been great each time (a little repetitive on the summer '09 one - one song was played 3 times remixed into other songs). You'll run into the occasional aggressive brave drunkard, but that seems to be the norm in all clubs I've been to. The food they serve - free on their anniversary is AMAZING! I've brought various groups of friends and they all loved the food served. Considering the door price is less than $20 with food included, this is a place to try on their anniversary. My friends took me here on Sept 14, 2013 for my bachelorette party. I was 1 of 20 other brides-to-be there on the same night. It was weird to see all the veils and sashes and it all felt very common. It's hard to explain, but I think if you are planning a night for your friend, you should take her somewhere unique. The crowd of brides was a huge turn off. The reason why this place is great for stagettes is because people make a big deal about the brides. I saw some stripper guys doing really inappropriate things to some brides. I didn't want to have any of that so I stayed well away. I also missed the whole show with all the queens because there were so many people that I couldn't see. My single friends were disappointed because there wasn't a cute guy in the whole club. Overall, it was okay. Not great, but not bad. The drag show is still giving me life but more and more embarrassing drunk girls without good friends be in the drag performers way and not even tipping. We were coming to El Convento Rico for our best friends Bachelorette, I booked the reservation on-line for 7 girls and we were so excited. We were told that we were going to have the best night of our lives and it was going to be amazing. We got there at about 9:15-9:30, it wasn't busy there were only about 20 people in the club. Because I had booked a reservation we were seated at table 1 (as per there table map on the website), as we were sitting down and getting comfortable a server came up and said what bottle are you buying? I said no bottle, we have 7 people and Bottle service is mandatory with 8+ as per their website and the email they sent me (which is below), the server said "no, everyone buys bottle service or you can't sit", I tried to tell him that this isn't what I was told or what was advertised and he literally just shrugged his shoulders. We told him this isn't right and we weren't paying for something that isn't mandatory. Within 2 minutes our 7 seat table was given to 3 people and I went to find a manager. I was explaining my situation to the "manager"/MC and he just kept saying ok, ok, ok and then said he would go talk to our server and of course never came back. As a collective we realized that the only way to sit was to pay, there was not a single seat in the house they weren't forcing people to buy bottle service to sit in. We then spoke to a server and got a tiny table for 7 that only had 3 seats, they brought out a $40 bottle of Absolut for $200.00. The server poured 3 drinks and we never saw her again, what exactly were we paying for? Just so you know the "Magic Mike Review" is 1 guy; 1 guy that does cool tricks as he grabs your tits and ass and then rubs down your vagina. Overall the music was cool but the whole situation was just disappointing, we were expecting to have this amazing night at a place everyone raves about and it was just so disappointing. I find it very sad that they would take advantage of people the way they do. They shit on a really awesome girls Bachelorette, we left by midnight and went over to the Ballroom and had an amazing time! Last night I had my bachelorette party there. It was an awesome time! The pre show games were super fun and I felt very included in the evening! I loved the music we danced all night long and the highlight of the evening was the show. The queens were absolutely stunning and very witty! It was just an overall wonderful time!!! Would recommended this place over and over again. The one and only downside to the evening was the drinks tasted very strong, to the point were it was hard to drink them. It was not only myself that was having a tough time drinking....I probably would have ended up drinking more if the drinks were not so strong. Overall fantastic time out!!!! read more

My best friend is getting married in the week, so we decided to do a night on the town for her. I asked her to pick a place she thought would be fun to go dancing. Unfortunately she picked this place. I've been to El Convento Rico before. Experience's have always been okay in the past. But last night was a disaster. We got there at 10:45 PM. As soon as we got there we noticed the staff aggressive and mean. There were two people paying at the door a $15 cover charge, we stayed behind them and the bouncers quickly shoved us into a waiting line where there was literally no one waiting. He kept us there for 10 minutes, and then allowed us to proceed to pay for our cover charges to go in. I thought that was really weird for starters, considering there was no one in line in front of us and behind us. We were the only ones there being held back. I figured they did this because the club was full downstairs. This place is in a basement. After paying $45 for the three of us to go in I get to the bottom of stairs and there're less than 20 people in the club. Right off the bat that started off as a warm welcome. Then we made our way to the bar where we find out everything is cash, my friends have no money on them they only had credit cards and debit cards. So I covered the first round of drinks. The bartender was cocky and unkind. I figured a $4 tip on $11 would soften him up a bit, But it didn't, not even a smile or thank you. Then the place got loaded up, stuffy as hell. The ratio of Spanish music to English music at one point was more than 2/3. I went to the DJ and requested a song, he rolled his eyes like I was bothering him said he would play it and for the next hour And a half nothing happened no song. After dancing for an hour and half it got so stuffy in that small overcrowded basement I could barely breathe. I needed some fresh air. So my friends and I decided to go outside for a breath of air. God for bid you're smoker and want a smoke break. I'm not, and neither of my 2 friends. We get outside we take a five minute breather. Only to find out that we have to get into a re-line to get back in. The line for people with stamps to reenter on their hands was enormous. I counted over 40 people waiting to get back in, on the other side of the door, they had the people waiting to buy tickets to get in. The bouncers let 10 of those in to collect there $15, then would allow two to reenter on our side. After waiting 45 minutes, missing the drag queen show that we originally came for we gave up and left the club. We were nowhere near entry after 45 minutes of waiting. They held us there like cattle. Not one staff member was polite. What a waste of $45 and a night. It really ruined it for my friend. She really had her heart set on watching the show. Toronto is full of amazing clubs I wish we had picked another one. I would suggest staying away from this place. There're so many nice clubs in Toronto. With really nice classy stuff. This one is definitely the lower end. They're only there to take your money they don't care if you have a good time. I've been to this place at least a half a dozen times. Went with friends on Sat night, 15 dollar cover, take cash cause no debit or credit accepted. Nice, diverse crowd of LGBTQ and straight men and women. Good music mix, a bit too much latin music for my taste but still good. Age range was 20's to 50 so anyone can fit in! read more

When we arrive around midnight there was barely anyone there and no one dancing, just a very cheesy dance competition on the dancefloor. The bartender was extremely rude and actually made fun of my friend for no reason rolling her eyes and talking about her to another customer right in front of me! My friend was just swaying to the music a little and waiting to buy a drink. Never had that treatment before! Overall the place seemed a bit outdated. read more

Avoid like the plague, although it is market as a gay club it is really not. My partner and I had been going there for 5 years, until we were told that we were dancing too provocative. I had seen straight people dancing more racier than my partner and I, yet they were not told otherwise. We were aproach by a bouncer that told my partner to stop dancing provocative. I finish my drink and talk to the same guy that gave him attitude he said he was the manager and said the complain was from the owner. The nightmare began when we were in line to get into this club and one of the bouncers was very rude and disrespectful to us. When I asked to speak to the manager they made us wait for an hour and the manager never came out. I found this to be unacceptable and a waste of our time so I wanted to go in there myself and find the manager so I could express my disappointment about the incident. When I was trying to enter the club, I got assaulted by that same bouncer. He pushed me hard to the ground and I fell and hurt myself so bad that I had to seek medical help. The ambulance and police came after one of my friends called for them. I was advised I should go to emergency to check for any major injuries but I decided to stay and see what the police would do. To our surprise, we found out that the bouncers are allowed to take any measure to prevent the public from entering a private organization - even if it means physically hurting a 125 lbs young girl. This is very unfortunate as we've been to this club many times and have never caused any trouble. All we wanted to do is have a good time and dance but ended up getting physically hurt and disrespected. I've also witnessed bouncers from this establishment being disrespectful and sexually harass female patrons while inside. This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional behaviour and it is unfortunate that this establishement employs individuals with such low moral grounds. If you decide to come here for a special occasion or just a night out, BEWARE of the bouncers and expect to be treated either as a punching bag or a piece of meat! read more
