A good friend recommended this place To me and I started going regularly. We love their margarita floats and the food was pretty good. I went the other day and the food was taking much longer then usual to come out so I ended up eating most of the nachos. I noticed a piece of something strange on it..there was a roach in my food. This is probably our favorite Mexican restaurant in Queens. My husband found this establishment and it was a great find. We arrived Friday evening around 6pm and the bar area was bumping and thumping for happy hour. We were able to enjoy our dinner! Ambience: it's pretty standard with tables/chairs and the coyote by the entrance sets the tone. Around 7:30pm the restaurant gets crowded and they provide live music. Food: the complementary chips and salsa are good. The appetizers tostones rellenos were not available for vegetarians. So the waiter told us we can just order plain tostones. We ordered shrimp fajitas with rice and black beans. Customer service: the host sat us quickly and our waiter was easy going. He went on lunch break and then we had another waiter and after we ate we did not feel rushed but often forgotten because we had to ask for a check since the rush for dinning came in. First off, I have been going here for years on and off for authentic Mexican food. The food is consistent, happy hour (pre pandemic not sure about now) was great, and is on a quiet second floor away from the crowds. I ate outside once during pandemic and the churrasco was delicious. Today, I ordered for pick up through Uber eats after grabbing some Japanese groceries from Sakura-Ya. I had a big bag and walked over because I had to use the restroom anyway. I went inside, but no one was there to greet me. I was going to let them know that I was there for an Uber eats pick up and ask if I could use the restroom while I waited for the order. I waited a couple more minutes, still no one so I left my bag by the front and went to use the restroom. As I came out, the waitress was walking towards at table with their food. She did not greet nor acknowledge me, so I went back to the front. FYI, there was a sign posted right as you enter that said "pickup orders here." So I decided to wait outside right by the door because of, you know, COVID. 10 minutes later, she quickly grabs the menus, opens the door, and she yells out the door "Are you gonna eat?" Not "hi, how are you? Would you like to see the menu?," but "are you gonna order?" in an accusatory tone like I was just sitting there to sit there. I was taken aback, but explained that I was waiting for a pickup order through Uber Eats. Her while demeanor changed. She asked if it was the mixiote order, I said yes, she said it's not ready yet. I finally got my order a few minutes after the app said it would be ready, I said thank you. She said no problem. This was extremely rude and uncalled for. She was about 5'3 with a jet black short straight across bob. I understand that they were likely short staffed due to COVID, but the attitude was unnecessary. Perhaps she needs some more customer service training. No customer should be treated this way. It was very upsetting and left a bad taste in my mouth. The sad, but also good part, was that the food was delicious (tortilla soup was just like when I had it it Oaxaca and the mixiote was very flavorful, meat was fall off the bone). Food is AMAZING There churasco steak is my favorite. Almost everything they serve is great. Service though sucks. Like worst service in nyc. The waitresses and waiters are rude , and then when you give them a small tip due to there lack of work and horrible service they have the audacity to ask you why you are giving such a small tip I'm writing a review again because I wanted to give them a second chance because I love the food I went back last week and it was the same horrible waitress again the short women. I ordered and again she managed to fuck everything up. My steak was wrong and I didint care because it's an easy mistake English is not her first language but she charged me twice on my card I had to call and complain I wish I knew her name , and again she took me and my girl friends aside just to ask for more tips. I didn't really care for this place much. We went for lunch today and we were only the second couple in there. The water and chips & salsa were brought out quickly. Salsa was good, a good amount of heat and very flavorful. Chips could have been better, I really hate when chips are sort of on the stale side. The waitress who took our order just wasn't that great. We ordered chimichangas and she asked if we wanted it from the lunch menu or the regular menu. We asked what the difference was and she said portions. With lunch you get one chimichanga and the regular menu you get 2. I got the lunch portion because usually chimichangas are huge. My bf got the regular portion. Both came with rice and black beans, but we didn't know this until she brought it out. Anyway, on the lunch menu or says it comes with a drink but she didn't even ask if we wanted a drink. I had to say "wait I need a drink." We got our food and it was the tiniest chimichanga i'd ever seen. It also wasn't hot like it just came out id the oil. It was lukewarm & overall flavorwise was just ehhh. I also didn't like the fact that the guacamole was a dot of guacamole and it had tons of lettuce mixed in. We found that to be very deceitful. When has anyone ever had guacamole with lettuce IN it?? I get that avocados are expensive right now, but still. The strawberry margarita tasted like sour mix, no strawberry flavor at all! The waitress never checked on us or brought more water. She checked on us when we were practically done & my bf said something about the guacamole. Her response was oh we don't give a lot, it's just a little on a bed of lettuce. It really wasn't a bed of lettuce (you'll see in the pics). He told her it was very deceitful of them to show a picture with guacamole if that's not what you really get. Love this place. The service is always good. The food is always great. I used to go to 5 Burro down the block but this is another great alternative on Austin! One thing though... the size of the margaritas for $11 (I believe it's $11) isn't cute. I drink it in a few sips and it's almost never exactly frozen, more like a purée. We came in to grab some authentic Mexican food. From the area it looks as though it might not be the best choice but we where very wrong. Walking in you're greeted by a host at the door. We were seated promptly. We then were served chips and salsa, both of which were freshly made. Then going over the menu we started getting very hungry. The menu didn't have too many items which can be overwhelming. Then our server, Dervis, came over and asked us what we would like to drink. Being that neither of us drink and ordered waters we felt no pressure to buy alcohol. We started off with fried calamari. It came with the traditional marinara sauce and also a sweet tamarind sauce. It was very nice. Then we ordered the combo fajitas to share. It had chicken, steak and shrimp. Wasn't a massive platter it was a perfect size and was delicious. The restaurant started getting really packed and then there was a mariachi band. That was awesome!! Bottom line: we just found our new favorite restaurant. And make sure you ask for Dervis. The staff here goes above and beyond to ensure that your satisfied with your meal. I've been here a few times for happy hour and for lunch. I was pleased with the service each time and would not hesitate recommending this restaurant. The happy hour deals are amazing. A good deal is hard to find especially when you're on Austin St. The red sangria was pretty good and strong too. I've tried the guava and sampled the tamarind margaritas which were sweet and delicious (let's not talk about calories, shhh!). I would recommend both over the regular margaritas. Most of the appetizers on the HH bar menu was $3. I particularly enjoyed the jalepeno poppers (no bacon) with cream cheese, the batter was seasoned just right. I came here on happy hour, with 4$ margaritas (on the rocks or frozen, regular or flavored!) it is hard to turn down! (Turn down for what? certainly not with these prices!) I started off with a sangria which was delicious, but probably could have used some more "steeping" time (should sit overnight with fruit in it for the fructose to transfuse), a regular frozen margarita and a tamarind margarita. My favorite was hands down the tamarind, full of flavor, just the right amount of sweetness to counterbalance the tangyness / bold flavors of the tequila and lime... My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Having nothing vegan on the happy hour menu, I opted for whole black beans and chips. The chips tasted very fresh, as if they make it themselves (which they might - I forgot to ask), and black beans were ... Black beans; which I always love. So score. The bartender was incredibly friendly and cordial, attentive and made sure our needs were met! I can definitely see myself returning soon! read more

If there was a means to rate zero stars, I would rate this place zero stars, absolute travesty.What a terrible experience, the wait staff was kind but management made it extremely uncomfortable for those who have children. The supposed "owner" of this establishment asked that my kids and I leave, to make other patrons feels comfortable (please note she was a Latin female who claimed to be the owner but my research proves otherwise - a lie - further supporting my point of shamefulness - see picture). What an inhumane act, clearly the "ownership" does not have have children and cannot empathize. Understanding diverse perspectives is key to successful business practices, something el coyote will never understand under its current ownership. I only hope they can learn from their horrendous mistake and treat other patrons better. What I leave you with is this, shame on you, please study what it means to empathize. I am actually a little surprised by the reviews people have given this restaurant. I had a great experience last night. Every time I go to NY I want to get some good Spanish food and this restaurant was on point. However, I will admit that I did not find this restaurant to be completely authentic Mexican but I was fine with it. The location is on the second floor. For those who do not want to walk up the stairs, there is an elevator on the side of the building. Once we climbed the stairs and entered the restaurant, we were seated quickly. I liked the fact that they have a patio outside as it was a nice breezy evening. As soon as we were seated, we were served water and complimentary chips and salsa. To start I ordered the empanada appetizer and my cousin ordered the chicken quesadilla. Both appetizers were delicious. We also ordered drinks. I got a frozen pomegranate margarita which tasted very good and she ordered the jumbo lifeboat on the rocks. For entree I ordered arroz con pollo which definitely tasted great with Maduros ( fried sweet plantains). I also noticed that they have table side guacamole at this restaurant which is something fun to watch. I will definitely order that next time. Plus please note service was outstanding. They seem to circle waiters and we were checked on frequently. All in all great food and good drinks made for a nice night. I will be back! read more

Interesting choice in name for a restaurant... a coyote is obviously a wild canine but also slang for a smuggler of illegal immigrants. The latter makes more sense- this place is a smuggler of bad food and watered down drinks. Part of a Mexican food chain, El Coyote opened this branch in Forest Hills in early 2014.  Located on the second level up a flight of stairs, it faces commercial Austin Street.  Inside, the large dining space is subdivided into the bar area, on the right, and two dining areas. Seating is tight but comfortable. Service is attentive and eager to please.  El Coyote serves Mexican food, including the expected tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, rellenos, and chimichangas.  Entrees cover major proteins prepared in different styles. Prices expected for the area; $10 to $15 for appetizers and $15 to greater than $20 for entrees. Food portions are very generous. Happy hour offered for some beverages; drink options include a margarita menu, plenty of standard cocktails, and mainstream beers including several Mexican imports. The complimentary salsa lacked the brightness of one freshly made, but was otherwise a reasonably good dip for nachos that were fine one visit, but mixed with stale chips on another. Sour was too prominent in the fish and shrimp ceviche, making its pairing with heart of palm a curious choice, but slices of avocado were welcome, and crackers both odd and welcome.  The shrimp were a smaller variety, and lacked both texture and flavor.  Fish was better and meaty.  Avocado salad was dressed simply, well-balanced and refreshing.  A good dish for sharing, as it was very generous in size. Carnitas tacos came three to the plate. Unremarkable tortilla and carnitas where flavor and textures are concerned, with an overabundance of toppings, but some may like it that way. Mexican foods, whether found at casual eateries catering to native folk in Sunset Park, Harlem, and the Bronx, or refined and high brow at restaurants like Casa Enrique and Cosme, are interesting, delicious, and often more complex than expected. El Coyote does not do this cuisine justice. Although Queens is home to many good Mexican eateries, this is not one of them. But for those happy with an Americanized version of Mexican, El Coyote will do nicely. read more

Terrible, Terrible Service...sneaky on Sangria charges! The waiter not only didn't come to our table to take our order within the first 20 mins of being seated, when he finally did (older, fat waiter), he didn't write anything down. Guess what - he got everything wrong. And when questioned where one of our appetizers was (very simple order that shouldn't have taken more than 10 mins) since it never came to our table - he didn't even apologize. He just acted like we were idiots and told us "I don't control the kitchen." Then the appetizer comes out two minutes later and it's wrong! It was beef instead of chicken. The Sangria that the waiter suggested I get turned out to be $20 a glass. Why would I want $40 of Sangria in the form of two glasses??? Why wouldn't I have wanted a pitcher for less than that? Because overcharge- That's why. He was awful, never gave us utensils. We had to get up and get them ourselves..meanwhile we saw others who had arrived AFTER us get served before us. Would not recommend, will not go back. I'm not sure why we weren't treated with respect by the waiter. He was so arrogant and lazy. I was very excited to go this place that they had outdoor seating. We were seated outdoors, the table was dirty I asked the waitress to wipe it down and she did, right away the rag had mildew damp smell and it lingered on the table. I ordered a pitcher of sangria which took forever and we never got our chips and salsa for like 40 minutes, asked for it at least 3 times, were hungry. I ordered crab and shrimp salad on a half avocado to split, it was OK. I ordered the seafood paella for me it was beyond disappointing. It had 2 tiny clams, 4 or 5 tiny dried up mussels, extra tiny dried up shrimp which were smaller than my tiny pinky nail, imitation sea sticks, chicken and no scallops. I had quite a few of seafood paella in my lifetime and this had to be the worst sad to say it. My friend had beef enchiladas. I wanted more salsa sauce I was told it was an extra charge... I asked for green sauce I never got it, I asked three different people but none of them brought it and when mentioned it to my waitress she says to me "do you still want it" The service was very slow and a long process if there was any service, I need an extra napkin I had to ask 5 times before I got it. I knew almost from the beginning that I wasn't coming back here. Ironically we were chatting a bit with the next table and they were unhappy here and told us that they were never coming back. To me their food looked good though. The man said if we were hungry we better go to that place pointing at McDonald's cross the street get some food there because we are going to wait for a very long time for our food here. I got a wrong bill which was $65, when I got my bill which was $115 and this one had a 20% gratuity included my table of 2. I questioned my waitress she said because it's Cinco De Mayo they're charging us 20%, I told her the $65 bill didn't have a 20% included and I told her I am not paying 20% if your service was good that's one thing but it wasn't, she said OK whatever took the bill back to adjust it. $35 sangria was tasty but weak. One might wonder if this place will one day end up on the show " Bar Rescue." I certaintly think it deserves to be. First, you actually have to put in effort to find this place, it's on the second floor with barely any signs directing the way up. Don't handicap people enjoy Mexican food too? We're a large party with multiple tables. We get chips and salsa which was sort of underseasoned but it was not too bad. Everyone ordered a round of drinks. I order 2 regular margaritas, cost around $7 bucks, tasted mostly like simple syrup but wasn't terrible. (I'm spoiled, nothing like my $4 amazing and strong Blockheads Margaritas!) After around 2 hours, I almost forgot that our table ordered food. I decided to say something to the hostess explaining that every other table already got theirs. A few minutes later, our food comes out. My chicken quesidilla (they only offer as an appetizer) is luke-warm, the cheese is chunky, not melted...I take a bite and all I taste is salt. I look around me and others dishes arn't much better. One person even found hair in his! I only had 1/4 of my meal. Went for lunch with my sister for our 45 bday (twins!) and had a great time!! They have a great outdoor setup for the pandemic - heated patio and plexiglass to help block wind and between each table too. The Ceviche was the best I ever had!! Delicious mole sauce and the Poblano peppers were absolutely awesome!!!! Also had a mojito that was soooooo good and huge (I got the large size!). The service was spot on!! Service is the slowest I've ever experienced in my life. We were never sat down properly (even though it said: please wait to be seated) took about 20-30 minutes to get a waitress to bring us menus, and another 15 minutes for her to take our drink order.
