Bottom line: if this resort had new dining management and chefs, I could recommend it. As it is, I question the authenticity of the Trip Advisor reviews, which is upsetting as I am a long time reviewer and didn't think a Certificate of Excellence could be fudged....Lots of pressure on guests to review on spot.. beware!
If you are a couple looking for a pretty place to fool around and drink a lot, and don't care about food, this review will probably be of little interest....Otherwise? Read on... Our family of four (my husband, myself and our two grown children) chose this resort for a much anticipated, badly needed christmas vacation. We reserved a "regular" royal room for our two grown children and a deluxe casitas side room for ourselves based on our reading of reviews about how the resort was set up. There was trouble at check in when our son and daughter were first assigned a room with a single bed even though we had told the agent they were brother and sister, and then the only room option with two beds involved an open toilet and shower configuration, so no privacy. Sorting this out with no change in resolution took over an hour upon arrival with no apology from the reservation desk, and our kids worked it out themselves by rigging up towels and sheets to create some privacy. If you come here with a friend, make sure you're okay with watching each other shower, change clothes and use the toilet, or else spending arrival time hunting down extra blankets and hanging them up yourselves! And it was interesting to see that, in trying to get this issue resolved, the customer service on the "regular" Royale side lobby, compared to the Casitas side, was relatively unfriendly, with more language barriers. We never heard the word sorry uttered by either agent we spoke to about the room confusion...
Once we checked in, we were excited about the beauty of the setting. This is a beautiful resort physically if you enjoy walking long distances, as we do, or riding in golf carts, as many guests seemed to. (Note that dodging those omnipresent speeding carts is not so fun, especially at night -- we felt like we were going to get hit on a few occasions?!). From our room to our kids' room was just under a mile walk... great for us but likely not for some others who seemed to wait for golf carts... Beach and palapas are lovely, and the grounds are meticulously maintained, as you would expect from the location and price. The staff seem to work hard to maintain the grounds and service common spaces. We thought the beach was beautiful, and liked the eco friendly tone of the resort as a whole.
The lighting in our rooms was dim -- very hard to see for getting dressed, etc. though we found the beds comfortable. Housekeeping was erratic in timing, but mostly fine. We had an outdoor shower which was lovely -- a high point! There was no dresser for putting clothing away -- I would describe our casita room as a nice solid 3 to 4 star room -- certainly not a 5. There was a very pretty little balcony, but it felt rickety... I would not have had our whole family out there at one time. Candles or lighting out there would have been lovely. (The resort grounds are quite dark at night... we saw some older guests -- not sure how they safely navigated?!)
The central issue here for us at the resort was the food. Our first day we had missed lunch as restaurants closed at 3:30. Our concierge (sweet but unhelpful), told us there was no buffet option when we learned later on our own that we could access the lunch buffet at the Generations Resort next door? So we went hungry our first day, and were told we didn't need dinner reservations only to then face a TWO HOUR wait for a horrendous dinner at the "Mexican" restaurant. Our first food of the day on arrival was at 9:30 p.m. so our entire first day was spoiled by low blood sugar and crankiness trying unsuccessfully to chase down food... We quickly wised up the next day and made dinner reservations for every night after that, but I will say that, as an active person who made use of the gym every day, we were often hungry. Other than breakfast, portions were tiny -- yes you could order more, but there was often very long wait time so that we gave up on that idea. Food quality ranged from really good at the breakfast buffet in the morning, to mediocre at the Health Bar for lunch, to down right awful at dinner with the exception of Jo Jo's. Lunch barbecue was never ready at the scheduled time, and food seemed dangerously raw. I think part of the issue around food service was understaffing -- wait staff seemed over worked, and I guessed that the kitchens were as well. There was typically only one bartender on duty at each bar in the evenings, scrambling to take care of cleaning glasses and guests! Kitchens tried way too hard to be "gourmet" instead of serving simpler, local fare.
Bottom line? pretty spot -- food at Paradisus Resort was 1000 times better -- now I know why it cost more.... read more
