After traveling from Southern Colorado to Delaware and back, we stopped at Colby, KS for our last night before getting home - over 4,000 miles logged. Throughout the trip we ate at multiple Mexican restaurants to include several popular chains. We can categorically say we found El Dos de Oros to offer the best Mexican meal we've had in the last 3 weeks. To be more specific, we had the Pollo Loco - a chicken breast, smothered in their specialty cheese topped with shrimp, sides of rice and beans. Wife had the taco salad and do to its size, could not finish it. Thumbs up. Chips and salsa was typical and good. Service was excellent. If you are in Colby, do yourself a favor and treat yourself. I cannot guarantee all of the menu is great, but we will make this a stop for us in the future. R read more

Recently we had to stop at Colby en route to Colorado Springs and were looking for a place to eat. We found this place based on reviews on yelp and Trip Advisor. If I could a four and half, I would. The food was tasty, wait was minimal/reasonable, good service at reasonable prices. There were no leftovers for our dog! And the fun hats were a nice touch. The only cons are: The place is not super clean or posh, but it is in one of the chain hotels and unless the hotels update, I doubt that is going to change. Their beer selection is not very exciting. It will be great if they could improve it. read more

Wow talk about bad and greasy Mexican food. I don't think they seasoned the ground beef at all

It's a bit confusing to find at first, but then you will realize it's in the comfort inn and to the left. The service is very fast and the waiters are nice. The food came out in about 6-9 minutes. I ordered the "chimichanga" from the specials menu. The chimichanga was very good, the rice was exceptionally good, and the received Evans was just bean paste (still really good). The guacamole had a pastey consistency. Overall, it's a great place to eat. Don't judge it from the outside. read more

I ate at this restaurant because I was staying in the hotel next door and there was little else offered in the town of Colby on a Saturday night. I wasn't expecting too much but I'm happy to say I had a nice meal. The restaurant is just inside the Quality Inn Hotel (go into the lobby, make a quick left). The decor of the restaurant itself isn't that impressive but it looked clean. The staff was friendly and the menu fairly extensive. They don't have a liquor license so I ordered peach lemonade, which was pretty good. I ordered a vegetarian dish and was pleased to find the spinach in the enchiladas fresh, and cooked down just until it was wilted and not until it was an unidentifiable green mass. The refried beans were tasty and undoubtedly bad for me. The guacamole was a little bland and the salsa was good but extremely mild. Overall the food was very mild but otherwise all right. For the location of the restaurant, I think it is a pretty good find. read more

We've lived in Kansas for over four decades, and we drive from NE Kansas to Colorado Springs at least twice a year to visit family. Years ago there were a few nice family-owned restaurants on the route. Now you'd better like homestyle fried chicken dinners because there is no longer any quality food to be found, other than the aforementioned Brookville Hotel. Kansas' I-70 has become a culinary wasteland. This place rates one star only because I can't give zero. Here's the rundown . . . Margarita - Nine parts mix, one part tequila . . . like the chains serve on ladies' night for eight bucks a pitcher. Service - MIA mostly. Bring the drinks. Take the order. Disappear for a while. Lay wife's plate on table; say nothing. Disappear for three minutes. Lay my plate on table; say nothing. Disappear for much longer. Finally, lay check on table; say nothing. Well, OK then! Food - Taco salad (wife); Arroz con Pollo (me). Muy malo! Ambience - Other than the three sombreros laid on the windowsill, it had all the charm of a grungy hotel restaurant that had gone out of business more than once. Wait! That's what it is. The best advice I can give is to eat a hearty breakfast in Kansas City, grab some snacks for the trip, set your cruise at 80, and have a nice dinner in the Springs. My favorite restaurant in Colby, located in Quality Inn. The only sit down place to eat, the rest are terrible. This is tex-mex so don't go for REAL Mexican food. I usually eat either the pollo bandito or the chicken chimichanga with queso. The beans are always good and I mix my rice into the queso and its awesome. The chicken is sliced into small pieces and spiced and cooked just right. I haven't ever had a bad meal here. They do have a small bar and a tv in one room. There is plenty of seating and you don't have to wait too long usually. Now if there is an event happening in Colby you might wait, everyone goes here afterwards. read more

Stopped in for lunch on way from Boulder to New Jersey. My son and I both really enjoyed our meals. Place was empty for a late lunch so I was a bit skeptical but I was pleasantly surprised. Both of our meals were fresh and very tasty. Service was also good. This is one of those undisclosed places that are a treat to find where ever you go and one of my all time favorite places to eat. I'm not sure what Ian from Prairie Village had, but I can attest to the fact they not only have vegetables, but a vegetarian menu. I can only guess he didn't look at the full menu. For a selection of meats and vegetables the molcajete dish has chorizo, hamburger, chicken, shrimp, onions, peppers, tomatoes. their fajitas have onions and peppers. Their popeye chicken has spinach in it. So yes there are vegetables at El Dos de Oros. As I and others have pointed out, there is a huge selection of food for all tastes and wants. The mood is flavorful without being overly spicy. And the servce is probably the best in town. Can't recommend them enough. 5 Stars! read more

It's a decent place to stop if you're looking for something in the area. The margs are adequate, but I'd stick with beer and shots. The chips and salsa are good. Overall the food is average. It won't stack up to your favorite Mexican place, but it is just fine for getting your fill while passing through. I eat at this restaraunt regularly, mainly for the pollo bandito. It's a chicken dish (hence the 'pollo') and quite tasty. It is served as a mixture of some spice and queso. Also with retried beans and rice, which are somewhat standard. The menu is extensive but I either get the bandito or a mojieta. I have also had the fajitas. Anything that sizzles at this place is good. The service is okay. Even if the server is quiet, they stay on top of the table and the restaraunt is clean. Recently they got a liquor license and have sense remodeled a small area adding in a bar with an extensive drink menu. Overall if you are eating in Colby ks. Mexican food without a vegetable or hot sauce that should be called hot sauce. But I can tell that this place is good with the locals... it seems that the local do not like to eat vegetables of any kind. no tomatoes, peppers, or onions. I normally stop for Mexican because there is a chance that i will get a vegetable on the road where there typically are none. So if you love meat, cheese, and a tortilla this is your place. I'm pretty sure you would get locked up and tortured if you served this in Mexico. It tastes like it was made by someone who never had real Mexican food ever. It was mostly pre packaged food including the "guacamole". I think the chicken in my Changa may have been boiled and then shredded and I didn't taste any kind of spices at all. They left the seasoning to the people who made the cheese sauce and canned beans. The beef in my wife's burrito tasted canned and reminded me of hot dog chili. I guess this kind of food might pass for the people of Kansas but they deserve better. The owners need to get this place some spices and fresh ingredients. read more

Can't say I'd recommend or not recommend this place. It was the only latin restaurant in town, and it was inside the Quality Inn motel. The portions aren't over-sized, but for the price, you'd think they would be. Overall, tasty and fresh, and one of the better eatery options while in Colby, but don't expect amazing. read more

Lunch was great, service was great but I realized a day later that I left my wallet on the table. I called the restaurant in a panic and Geraldo confirmed he had it and offered to mail it to me! Food was good, but service was lacking. We stood at the entrance waiting to be seated for approximately 5 minutes, while 3 waitresses stood two-feet away making a point of ignoring us. Finally another person came to seat us. Food was made quickly and served hot. We liked the flautas and chimichanga, but the beef nachos are just chips with melted cheese and ground beef on top. If you're looking for a hot tamale, you aint going to find it here, but you will find fantastic, authentic Mexican food at a great price. I stayed at the attached hotel (see my review) and upon the desk clerks recommendation I ate my supper here. Walked away super impressed. The staff was friendly, funny, and super nice. The margarita I had was incredible and the food was to die for. Now this isn't "spicy" Tex-Mex style food, but rather a more mild, real deal menu. I ordered the shrimp and was delighted to find it cooked perfectly and seasoned wonderfully. My partner had a chimichanga and discovered real shredded beef, not browned hamburger that you find in a lot of places (though I did note at another table that their tacos had hamburger but being Northwest Kansas they probably have to offer that to keep the yokels...I mean locals coming back :). The Mexican rice had a nice selection of vegetables in it and the portions were huge for the cost of the meal. I did splurge on dessert (yeah yeah I know once on the lips forever on the hips) and had a tres leches, or a three cream cake, that literally made my eyes roll back into my head, it was that good. The decor isn't quirky and modern or hip or anything, but when food is this good and served as fast as it was, well you don't need fancy gimmicks. I noticed a lot of cars in the parking lot and the place was packed, much busier then the hotel was so I'm going out on a limb and saying it's popular with the locals as well. My girlfriend and I had some delicious Mexican food. All the food from the chips to the sauces are made in house and tasted great. My pork and her steak were well prepared. The atmosphere is what you'd expect for a Mexican restaurant in the western part of kansas. read more
