I really like this place- had a few things wrong with the last order but we cleared it up and they resent me an entire order with some delicious chicken soup to boot as they sympathized with my not feeling well when I called to tell them what went wrong. I can't say enough good things about the quality of food for the value I've gotten here. It is incredibly consistent visit after visit, steak tacos or steak tortas are sure bets. This place has really went downhill. The employees are rude and the food isn't what it used to be. I have given them a couple chances and each time I felt like a fool for not learning from my mistakes. But I kept thinking maybe I went on an off day and I wanted my old el famous back. The one I grew up with. Viewing the last reviews it seems like people have had similar issues. What happened? During the pandemic, staff was incredibly disrespectful and rude. You should never argue with customers. Especially when it is over where you are lacking in keeping customers safe. I so-desperately want to love this place. There are so few things in this world that make me happier than a good burrito, refreshing horchata, sizzling fajita veggies, fresh guacamole, and arroz Mexicano... It's my therapy. When El Famous Burrito in Wheeling get my order right, I'm as happy as can be. The problem is, there's usually something incorrect with our orders, and the quality of the burritos can vary a lot. Most often, they'll forget an ingredient that we paid extra for (often guacamole and sour creme). Honestly, I think they've forgotten an ingredient the last 3 times we've gone there. If we put in a big order, sometimes we'll be short an item. The filling in burritos can be really inconsistent - sometimes they're perfect, sometimes they are missing an ingredient, sometimes they aren't stuffed evenly (when they remember the guacamole, it'll often be all at one end), and occasionally the meat will be overcooked. Their drinks are all consistently good, though. Their horchata is very rich, with a nice cinnamon glow, and their drink fountain is well carbonated (a lot of restaurants in the area serve flatter drinks). They also have ice-cold bottles of Jarritos and Sidral Mundet. The restaurant itself is always VERY clean, and the food is prepared quickly. If I could just count on them getting our orders right every time, this El Famous Burrito location would easily earn 5 stars. read more

So I'm not sure what's going on in this place? Something must have changed recently where both the quality of food and service has gone down significantly. I started coming to el famous way back when they just had one location on Clark street. Then when this one in wheeling opened up, it was awesome. But recently, I mean in the past 2 months or so, they have lost their way. The first couple of times I thought it was just a bad day or things weren't going their way but after repeated chances, I am giving up on this place. I want to give it a one star but giving it 2 because of its history and just sentimentality. I wish this place luck and hope it goes back to its roots. All your typical Tex- Mex favorites. On Tuesdays, tacos which are normally $2.30 are $1.70. Which is a great deal because they really pack their tacos full even when they are on special. I usually get steak tacos on corn with cilantro and onion only - like they do in Chicago. Tostadas are also always a really great deal here if your in the mood for some veggies. Been coming here for years and the service is always quick. They may not be as consistent as say a McDonald's who literally has it down to a science but they are close and a lot of the same cooks I have seen for years. Here at work, it was Taco Tuesday. I must say that I had no idea Taco Tuesday was courtesy of El Famous Burrito. I just knew that one of my co-workers ordered us about 20 tacos (for $1 each): pork, chicken, steak and beef. We also got a pile of little salsa containers (red and green) and some foil-wrapped peppers & carrots. (I love me those spicy carrots.) I had two pork tacos and one chicken. They were double-wrapped in small flour tortillas and dressed with cheese (on the pork), lettuce and tomato. I dumped salsa on them and prepared to cry. No tears here -- not joy, pain or sorrow. The flavor was solid; the achiote from the pork stained my hand red as the grease ran down it. It was hot enough for me, but not too hot. The chicken was dark meat and pretty good but not separated very well. These are not the most authentic or delicious tacos. And I have no idea what the rest of their menu is like. I think my husband actually ate at an El Famous once and deeply regretted it. But they were tasty, and filling, and my digestive system is still intact, so let's go with three stars. Taco Tuesdays - Even though they bumped the prices up to $1.25, it is still a great deal on some excellent food. 2 Corn tortillas (you can get flour if you prefer) wrapped nicely around your choice of steak, chicken, al pastor, beef, even lengua (not my preference, but whatever makes your day). I like my tacos with onion, tomato, cilantro and a pack of the spicy peppers and carrots. The place is always packed on Tuesdays after work, but they have a good system. It is definitely worth the wait. Also grab a glass bottle coke to wash everything down with. I am sure there are plenty of other great places like this in Wheeling, but Taco Tuesday makes this my go to place. read more

Okay, so it';s not perfect. Once in a while it's been noticeably dirty, or the food that myself or something small has been botched. Overall, if you don't want to go to chipotle this is THE place to go for inexpensive mexican eats in the deep northwest burbs. 9 times out of 10 you know you're going to get a very generous sized burrito for 4 or 5 bucks range, and that you will be served extremely fast. These guys HAUL when a line builds up! It beats taco bell and chipotle overall, and is a bit more authentic tasting. Oh, and their burritos are enormous. Forgot to mention that when they say it's a big burrito they are not kidding. Oh, and their guacamole is well made too. I would (and will continue to) absolutely go here hands down if it was this vs chipotle and taco bell and such. OK, it starts like this: I ordered 2 burritos with no tomatoes. When I get home.....tomatoes on my wife's burrito. I take it back, and after I explain why I want it remade, the girl behind the counter actually has the NERVE to roll her eyes at me!! I quickly called her out on it and reminded her that I am the CUSTOMER! Not only did they not remake the burrito, they made steak TACOS and complianed AGAIN when I told them they got it wrong AGAIN! Finally after about 15 minutes, I walked out with the one correclty made burrito, and the other with the wrong meat. Best tacos around in my book! I love their steak tacos, chorizo and eggs, but the others are very good, too. This place is popular, the workers are efficient and friendly, and everything is very clean if you do choose to eat in. I like that you rub shoulders with construction workers, office workers, gringos and Latinos. And they still have Taco Tuesday. Okay so sometimes when you're looking for some quick Mexican food to go, this is the place to go. Granted I only did carryout so I wouldn't say I had the full dine in experience, but that's how I prefer quick "fast food" type Mexican in the burbs. I just want to grab it and eat in front of the TV. How healthy, right? But anyways, I got a few el pastor tacos which is marinated pork in a spicy sauce, a few steak tacos and a few ground tacos to go. On Tuesdays they are super cheap at like $1.50 a piece and the portions are big so 3 of them would totally fill you up, or at least with 3 I was feeling stuffed. They give you the option of corn or flour tortillas and I clearly do corn since its healthier and more authentic to me. I gotta say I didn't like the steak nor the ground beef tacos as they were really missing that flavor and spice that I look for in my tacos. However, I did love the pastor tacos and wish that I ordered more of those. The flavor was all there and next time I'm just going to order these to carry out. Would be better if they added pineapple to them just like some other places do pastor tacos *just a suggestion* wink wink, but I'm okay with them the way there are too. We also tried the quesadillas and once again, low on flavor profile with them, more on the bland side for me. They do give you two types of salsas to go, the green tomatillo and the red salsa and those were delicious to dip if you wanted to get some salsa chips or on top of those tacos for extra flavor. I will definitely be back since it's close, convenient and cheap when I'm not feeling Chipotle and I want a more authentic Mexican dinner. Maybe next time I will even dine in since the staff seems pleasant. El famous burrito, I don't know how famous you are, but you're okay, definitely worth another shot. Are here about 3 years ago and it was good, not great but decided to go in for lunch today. Waited in line to order food and takeout since there's no indoor dining. Got to the front fairly quick and the cashier lady had a uncomfortable look on her face so I didn't walk up until she waved she was ready. I understand how it can be stressful during busy hours, so I ordered 4 steak tacos, 2 Lengua tacos, 1 al pastor taco, and 1 steak burrito combo with rice and beans while pointing with my finger at the chalkboard where the burrito combo is written. Paid via credit card and asked for an empty cup for my drink and she says combo doesn't come with a drink and I point at the chalkboard and she rudely got upset walked away from the register and came back and yelled "you said burrito combo", I told her I specifically said steak burrito combo with rice and beans while pointing up at the chalkboard. And i said if it's a problem, no worries just leave it on there and just add another steak burrito combo with rice and beans. It should have never been a problem because I never left the counter, but whatever, she was having a bad day and I just wanted to move along since there was a line behind me. And she got confused, and I asked her if she understood and she walked away and then walked back to the register in an aggressive and disrespectful way. For me, I really didn't care that I ordered an extra burrito, I just wanted to get the food and go, but she seemed confused and agitated, and when I asked for a receipt, which they don't give, she said it will be in the bag. Got the food, of course no receipt! All the steak in the tacos seemed like it sat on the flat grill for a long time and charred and cooled down. So when u order they put a bunch of grease on flat grill and the cook that charred burnt meat. I didn't see them do it but that's how it looked and tasted. Al pastor was extremely salty and over seasoned but the pork is not fresh. Pork is the least expensive meat in the grocery store, so no reason to serve old pork meat that taste fishy. That burrito combo with the pork and steak in it which she accidentally keyed was the most disgusting burrito ever. Charred greasy burned steak with over seasoned, over salted, spoiled pork meat. Ended up throwing the food out. Payed $40 and no receipt. My guest were disappointed and left hungry. read more

I would hope this is just a one-time problem because they have been in business for so long. El Famous is still crankin' them out. My freinds had to come here last Tuesday as it was Taco Tuesday. Dollar tacos for lunch. I ordered two chicken taco's and one ground beef taco with corn tortilla's. Put red sauce on one half of the tacos and green on the other. I polished them off in no time flat. Both were absolutely Delicious, perfectly seasoned, soft fresh corn tortilla's, nice mild cheese and the great salsa verde. And all for less than five bucks. I've had a few meals at this place and I'd say it's decent. I don't hate it. On days when I'm craving Mexican food in the northwest suburbs this place is honestly the last place I go to. I go here when it's really bad weather outside and I don't feel like driving a little bit further. The only thing I order from here are their churritos, tostadas, and horchatas. Their tostadas are really good here. I had a burrito once but I think I nearly died because of its massiveness and I didn't feel like dying that night. Reason why I gave it 3 stars is because their tacos (specifically the carne asada) are just not up to par like their surrounding restaurants in the northwest burbs. When my parents decide to get take out from here they always buy from here and they always buy me carne asada tacos. I ONLY EAT MY TACOS WITH CILANTRO, ONIONS, AND LIME (the REAL WAY TO EAT IT). But at this place I just can't do it. Their carne asada is just so chewy and tasteless that I can only eat their carne asada tacos with the abundance of lettuce, sour cream, and onion to mask it all. Anyone who says this place has "good" food, doesn't know taco stands what so ever. The steak is almost unedible, chewy, fatty and usually burnt to a crisp. If they could improve the quality of the steak they use it would be 10x better. I only go there as a last resort and usually hope for the best, only to be utterly disappointed after the meal. I tried the chorizo tacos there once and they were awful as well. I really want to like this place because it is so close to my home but I'm better off at a place like Taqueria Alamo down the street or Las Asada in Des Plaines. read more
