I stopped in while passing through Mount Prospect for a carry-out steak burrito dinner and steak taco. A cherubic counter lady took my order and I sat at an ergonomically pleasing booth. Pueblo Viejo is a favorite amongst the locals in the Mount Prospect area. We had heard that they had great Mexican fare, so we decided to stop by for an earlier lunch. Their menu is pretty extensive, offering breakfast items, tacos, tortas, burritos, tostadas, and Mexican entrees; they also have char-grilled burgers, hot dogs, gyros, wings, and even a pizza puff for those who do not want to partake in Latin items. We ordered 2 Chimichanga dinners, which came with a side of rice and refried beans: +one filled with asada (skirt steak) +and, one filled with al pastor The burritos/chimichangas come filled with bean, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce; with the asada, I opted out of the tomatoes and lettuce, whereas the al pastor included everything. Both chimichangas come topped with melted cheese and a suizo/ranchero sauce - the asada was requested to come with the melted cheese on top and the al pastor without; both were requested to have the suizo/ranchero sauce to come as a side. While the chimichanga was deep-fried well and was crispy, the asada was extremely bland. I was also surprised at the 'melted cheese' on top - they were literally slices of white cheese, haphazardly melted; it would have been so much better if it was the shredded cheese or even queso. The ranchero sauce was runny and watery, and didn't do much to add onto the chimichanga for flavor. The al pastor was enjoyed much more, as it was stated to be more flavorful; I'm thinking that seeing the al pastor on the spit, this is the more popular protein of choice. We did inquire if they sold the meat by the pound, which they did ($13.99/lb). A 'dinner' isn't necessary, as the rice and the refried beans were forgettable; the rice was flavorless, and the refried beans were goopy and unseasoned. Three type of hot sauces in bottles were provided, which you can use to your heart's content; we preferred the creamy habanero version, as it provided a nice kick to the meal. You can dine-in and take a seat anywhere and menus will eventually come; there were plenty of carry-out orders as well. A basket of chips and thin, runny salsa were provided as complimentary. Service was fine, but somewhat inattentive and on the slower end; we requested an extra plate, but silverware didn't come with. The place encompasses two 'units', so there are a good number of tables in there. The place could be more cool and well-ventilated; when we dined in, it was muggy and extremely warm inside. I'm glad I was able to try this place out, but not sure if I'd go out of my way to return - it was a bit overhyped, based on the other rave reviews. The torta was good but could be better if it had less big onion, they should normally add aguacate and jalapeño it would be way better. The meat was good just that I got a piece with a lot of fat and I don't like that. The cecina taco was very good and tender and juicy. The steak was okay rather have cecina for the same price. The chorizo is not to good, it has a weird taste. The Al pastor was really good just needs pineapple. The hot sauce where amazing except for the green sauce, the other three are five stars. Absolutely delicious food with kind staff! They go above and beyond for the customer, insuring that any dietary issues are addressed and met. Even with modifications the food was authentic and plentiful and the prices are fair. The restaurant is clean with a nice atmosphere. This is the best Mexican food I have found in the northwest suburbs! They cook everything fresh, make their own guacamole, rice and sauces in house as well as trim the meats so they are lean and flavorful. We were in the area and picked up some carry out to take home. We loved everything we ordered. The guacamole was delish and the chips were really good. We both had the two taco (steak) dinners. Everything was seasoned well and the red sauce that came with it was great. The green sauce was too spicy for us, which is odd because I normally prefer verde sauce. Little strip mall restaurant with authentic Mexican cuisine. Chips and salsa on your table, 4 levels of hot sauce available. My Dad has declared this to be his favorite restaurant. Clean and brightly decorated. He gets the grilled shrimp dinner. I have enjoyed a fajitas which were good, the steak was a little tough though. I'd try chicken nextime. We ordered a side of guac too. We also tried the chicken enchiladas which were more than one could eat. All served with rice, beans and lettuce. Grabbed carryout the other evening. It was a slow, quiet, Tuesday night and it looked as if employees were 'winding down' for the evening despite the time being an hour to close. I planned to join a friend's family for dinner and I was requested to grab the order on my way. Reviews looked solid so I was looking forward to dinner. Plus, from the looks of the salsas they offered, they have the good kind. Which have a specific coloring from the vegetables used in its preparation. Few taquerias in Chicagoland use this recipe, the spicy to milder options are creamy with a substantial kick. Please understand, I'm talking about the topping salsas used to add heat. Not to be confused with salsa eaten with chips. That too I think is satisfying but I only used it as a condiment. About the tacos. There was an option to have them authentic with onions and cilantro or with lettuce & tomatoes. The tacos themselves; despite being prepared at carryout, were overcooked. I needed to douse them in salsa. The steak was chopped tiny like Chiclets chewing gum. Cooked well done so the moisture was gone and I could hardly tell if it was seasoned. I was told the AL Pastor is flavorful.. Again, so dry. I was choking while eating and needed water to get the food down. I ended up passing on the last taco. When preparations are that awful, I won't waste valuable calories or stomach space on overcooked food. I guess we could chalk this up to a one-off, being that weeknights in the sleepy burbs are still slower due to the pandemic. But still, money was paid for food and there is a transactional guarantee that the food should be decent, tasty, satisfying? Meh. Nice people. read more

I ordered the al pastor (fine), shrimp (best out of all of them), tripe (I don't know if they gave me intestine instead because it was tubular with stuff inside. I've had it in small chunks) while my sister had the shrimp, steak and chicken? (Dry) taco with steak sopa (meat had good flavor but I wasn't a fan of the actual sopa). I absolutely LOVE this place. I tried their tacos at the Mount Prospect farmer's market and was blown away. Now Taco Tuesdays is my go-to with my bf. Carnitas and al pastor with onions and cilantro are my favorites although their fish taco is also excellent! They give you some fresh salsa and chips to enjoy while you wait, and we finish it in five minutes or less (so yummy). And then the arrival of the tacos equals bliss. Ask to try all four of their salsas. I love love the tomatillo one and my bf loves the creamy avocado jalepeno. The red salsa is super hot so beware if you are a lightweight to heat. This place is about two minutes from our place and we finally gave it a try. Disappointed that we didn't before now! We very much enjoyed it. The chips and salsa were great. I got the taco salad. The shell was perfectly crunchy and wasn't greasy like some places. They did forget my sides of sour cream and guacamole which I was disappointed especially since they're included with the salad. Husband had a burrito. It had lots of great filling and he ate the entire thing. We walked in and ordered to carry out. The wait wasn't bad especially since they were definitely busy.
