Corn tortillas always taste moldy. Either that or the meat. Used to be a good place but can't stand it anymore.

Food did not seem very authentic. I think the salsa was paste picante sauce however staff was nice and friendly.

Water had a bitter aftertaste, so did our fruity drinks. Beans were way too salty and dry. Not a fan.

The owner, Loli, could work on the way she speaks to her paying customers. Makes comments and doesn't make you feel welcome. There has been several times this has happened. The food is good but she has made us not want to come back because of how the interactions have been. Pretty sad because we have been coming here for years. The other staff is nice and welcoming. My husband and I came to El Faro 45 years ago as boyfriend and girlfriend. We loved it so much that we now go out of our way 30 miles away just to come up here to eat. The service has always been great, the food even better. There tacos and chile rellenos are absolutely delicious. If you haven't tried El Faros, definitely do . We will continue to come El Farols in Midvale on 7200 & state for many more years to come. read more

I came here one night for dinner with my dad. The food was absolutely delicious!! Very tasty and filling. The chips were really yummy too. The salsa was good but very watery. The service could have been a bit better as well. Other than that, my dad and I enjoyed our food a lot. Also, this place is cash only so be sure to have cash on you when you go! read more

Decent Meal here. This is in a strip mall. At an event where we needed a private room which are few and far between it seems. Servers were very kind and attentive. Carnitas were good! The usual bland-ish Mexican food that you get around here. . Cholula definitely helped. read more

We decided to pop in to El Farol for a bite to eat recently and enjoyed our visit. The strip mall exterior was quaint but approachable and the interior was reminiscent of a 90s fiesta - Party time! The food itself was 3.5 stars: chips were store bought, the salsa was too thin/salty, the half and half appetizer was simple but good, the green chicken enchiladas were excellent, the chili relleno was very good, rice was above average, the refried beans were good, and the Big Jose was good but strange. I've never had a chili verde burrito smothered in red sauce - the sauces were both good but kind of fought against each other and there just wasn't enough meat inside the burrito for me to be thrilled with it. Most of the service was slow (as it is nearly everywhere these days) and it was clear they were having a hard time keeping up with the number of customers. The waitresses were attentive when they got around to you and it was clear that they remembered the regulars. The real highlight of the night was when the waitress came back with a to-go box; she saw my wife was holding our baby, and then offered to help my wife plate her meal. It was a kindness that only parents with 2 young kids can appreciate and that offer won me over. From here on out, whenever I want Mexican food reminiscent of childhood, I'll swing by El Farol. read more

First went here circa 1974. Could have been earlier. They were on 3000 S State Street. I'd get ground beef tacos. They'd top it with cheese then deep fry. One of the few places my parents allowed me to order a dessert. Sopapilla. They've been in Midvale as long as they were in South Salt Lake. The food is very basic but good enough and extremely consistent. The place is decorated nicely, service is friendly and very fast. They've been around since 1967. I remember the original owners vaguely. He reminded me of my uncle. They could have been brothers. read more

Haven't been in for a long time just because so much better options but this was close by and we went in for Saturday lunch. We saw no lunch specials so we decided to share the fajitas with beef, chicken and shrimp. It came out sizzling hot with green peppers and onions mixed with meat on the skillet and it was freshly cooked. Delicious. Rice, beans, sour cream, pico and guacamole came along with it which were just average. The house salsa is warm in temperature and not that spicy so we asked for a spicier salsa and that was better. Service kept hiding even tho he had two other tables even tho they seemed finished. But I wish he would check on us more often especially at the end because we wanted dessert but we didn't want to wait longer. El Farol did an awesome job putting together a catered menu for my sister's 50th birthday party. Lolita, the owner there was so easy to work with and the meal was very fair priced! She also checked with me to make sure there wasn't any last-minute changes. Everything was ready on time and I just feel they did an awesome job for me and my family! Has got to be the WORST Mexican food I've ever had.... All three salsas served after I asked if they had any other salsa were terrible.. one was heated pace picante sauce, one was red paste and the green was ice cold slop.. I ordered 3 entrée plate (so I could take left overs home). Beans were dried out and no flavor, the rice again no flavor and somewhat cold. The tostada had dried beans, small amount of cheddar cheese (never had chedder cheese at a Mexican food place) overwhelming amount of soggy lettuce and a slice of tomato (I had to ask for sour cream). The Chile relleno was topped with warm tomato sauce, soggy batter, and again chedder cheese. The enchilada was sweet tasting (not in a good way), and again with chedder cheese. Take your business somewhere else honestly. I always look forward to salsa. It's a Mexican restaurant staple - but their salsa comes from a can. You can tell immediately from the taste with preservatives, the water, and sodium concentrate. Besides that disappointment, they don't serve queso, another missing staple. I think some items on this menu are okay - but just that - okay. The chili verde was disgusting. The meat was soggy and pink. Pretty sure this was canned too. This place is okay. I have been here twice now and my family has been here all the time growing up. From what I have heard it has continued to go downhill and isn't what it used to be. I arrived about ten minutes after my family got their drinks rolling and sat down. I had not even opened my menu when the server came and asked if we were ready to order. He was clearly annoyed and wanted us out of there asap. Anytime we would speak he would immediately try to walk away and did not care for what we had to say. It was pretty rude. My food was decent I probably would have enjoyed a chain's enchilada more then I did here. It was pretty dry and I was disappointed they did not have a shrimp enchilada. I do not see myself coming back anymore unless they came up with a new menu and better customer service. read more

Me: Okay, bro. 4/1/2011 (along the exotic banks of the ROARING Jordan River) Me: Babe, you pick type of food for dinner tonight Babe: (thinking, contemplating, making a pros/cons list of each type of food, suddenly she yells with excitment) MEXICAN! Me: (thinking about that F-150 conversation) Bang Bang. (at El Farol) Me: (calling gary) Dude what do you get at El Farol? Gary: (in a low almost drooling roar) Oh my gosh, I am so jealous. You have to get the Chicken Enchilada. You also have to have the Bean Dip appetizer. (still drooling and almost in a death bed gurgle) so freaking good... sounds so good right now. Me: Babe, Gary sounded like he was either dying or in heaven when I asked him about eating here. Babe: Nobody cares Me: (to waiter) 2 Chicken Enchilada platter (one green and one red sauce) and 1 chile verde bean and cheese burrito. Can we also get bean dip appetizer? Could not be more disappointed.... I have been going to El Farols since I was little and have always drooled at the thought of their half and half chips and cheese enchiladas. After moving away for 5 years and being in the vicinity for a visit I decided it was a must that I order the half and half chips. So upset that they have changed the toppings for chips and their salsa.... Their salsa has got to be the worst thing ever and to think this is supposed to be from an "authentic" Mexican restaurant is shameful. Definitely pace picante at best. I am sad to say that my tenure with El Farols will cease after this trip and I will take my business elsewhere. Please, please at least change your salsa. The worst Mexican in Utah. Please for the love of god stay away from this place. My nephew had the soft shell taco which came out like a burrito more than a taco he took a bite into it and told me how gross it was. I didnt believe him so I took a bite and it was really uneatable. The sauce tasted like a red marinara sauce that was in it. Really disgusting stay away. read more

I don't know who the bozos are giving this place anything but 5 stars, but they're crazy! The beef tacos are the best I've eaten anywhere and I adore tacos and I'm old so I've eaten a few. El Farol has apparently been in business since 1967. So, they must be doing something right. I just haven't found out what. Due to it's proximity to my work, I've been there five times, each visit separated by at least a year. I think the shear amount of time between visits makes me forget how boring El Farol actually is. But after yet another disappointing meal, my long term memory will no longer fail me. I will not be back. First, the chips and salsa are the worst I've ever had. I'm not exaggerating. It's even worse than Su Casa, which I thought would always hold the all-time title for terrible salsa. It's weirdly soupy, and staggering in it's lifelessness. And for some reason, they serve it heated. It's really bad. The entrees are mind-numbingly predictable, uniformly bland, and utterly uninspired. But these beany, cheesey plates are actually quite typical for your standard strip mall 'Mexican' restaurant, meaning they are edible, but also completely forgettable. Can someone please steer me to a Chili Relleno of substance? I'm so tired of mushy, tasteless chili peppers smothered in melted cheddar jack and flat tomato sauce. This place has my favorite crunch ground beef tacoss on Earth! Every time I go here I get 1 Half and Half appetizer - which is one half plate of cheese chips and one half plate of bean dip chips. The cheese chips have those great thick crispy chips and are drowning in melted cheesy cheddar goodness. The bean dip chips have refried beans smeared on the chips and are topped with a concoction of diced tomatoes, green peppers, onions, and maybe a little something tangy like vinegar. But...what I really go there for are the crunch ground beef tacos. When they come to the table, they still have a trace of hot oil on them. They are packed with meat and cheese and go great topped with some of El Farol's warm salsa! This place is a must!!! read more

Definitely not fancy or flashy. Not in the greatest location, either. However, the food makes up for all of that. For fans of the now gone Rafael's Mexican Food in Sandy, the menu at El Farol is virtually identical to the original, greatness that was Rafael's. They still have the most amazing enchilada sauce known to mankind. Their chile verde is very good and the deep-fried tacos are righteous. Service is friendly and reasonably quick. Not super-attentive, but good enough. Prices are rather good; most items are in the $7-$10 range. Looking forward to going back soon. read more

Should've consulted yelp first! I started with the cheap grocery store quality chips with what tasted like warmed up paces picante sauce and it went down hill from there. The Chile Verde was like nothing I've ever had, kind of a gross funky taste to it along with piss poor corn tortillas.
