Stopped into the Cancun Cafe for lunch with my wife; it's been a while and not much has changed. The place is looking pretty worn, neon light is partially not working, and the floor tiles are broken in a lot of places. The booth seats are pretty low and you kind of fall into them when you are seated. But overall it's a homey inviting place with a friendly crew that has Mexican draft beer available with meals. The food is standard American style Mexican, maybe you could call it Tex-Mex, the complimentary chips with salsa is really tasty, the tortilla chips are warm and the salsa is a good home made style. I ordered a XX beer which they have on draft and despite my really gray hair, had to show ID per Utah law. So dumb. But they need to cover their ass and abide by the rules. We ordered our lunches; I a pair of pork tamales with chile verde on top and my wife side dishes of a cheese enchilada and a hard shell beef taco. They were served quickly and piping hot. The tamales were a bit dry and could have used a bit more chile verde on top for extra flavor but overall were pretty decent. My wife really liked the cheese enchilada but thought the beef in the taco was a bit stringy and flavorless. She did like the way the taco was cooked though and just ate it without most of the beef. The prices were reasonable for lunch and the overall experience was satisfying. My wife said she'd like to come back again so it looks like we'll be heading back to the Cancun Cafe again sometime in the future. read more

Cancun cafe is my favorite food place of all time! I try to bring anyone and everyone that I can and recommend it to everyone out there! The other location ran by Chris was superior, I had been going there for over 15 years and the crew was always amazing which absolutely made up for the occasional mess up. I will miss them but this location has been amazing! Keep doing what you're doing with improvements on the way! My mom and I were looking for somewhere without a ridiculous wait, but still had good food. I stumbled onto Cancun and we weren't disappointed. My mom had a #1 (biggest plate I've ever seen) and she loved it. Endless flavors, loads of food, tons to take home too! It's massive. No joke. I got veggie fajitas that are not on the menu, they just sub out meat with mushrooms. They were delectable! Fresh, cooked perfectly (that carmalized veggie flavor) and came with a good portion of guacamole, sour cream, rice and beans. The service was great and everyone was so friendly! Things I really liked about our experience here tonight: A. My preferences are that of a geriatric in that I like a quiet place to actually have a conversation with my dining guests. This place checks that box and you don't feel rushed. B. Cheryl was everything I want in a server. Great suggestions, friendly but not creepy, a nice smile and attentive. C. Generous portions. As a whole I was not excited about Cancun Cafe, and I usually get really excited about even mediocre Mexican food. One thing that they did ok was the chips, they were served hot to the table. They were delicious while they were still hot but lost of lot of their yumm as they got cold. The problem with the chips was that they were not presented with a salsa that was worth eating. I ended up eating them with little to no salsa. I got the cheese enchiladas with beans and rice. As a whole I felt like they were blah. The cheese was good and perfectly melted but the red sauce was oily and partially separated. The rice was good and slightly crunchy on the top which I love. Went in for lunch today during covid 19 precautions and what a good choice. Very clean and spacious seating. Server had a mask on and brought us fresh fried chips and salsa. The food is pretty good and fresh. They have daily lunch specials that come with rice and beans for $7.99. They run 11 to 4. Today was a pork taco so I went with just a smothered burrito and it had spice! My son loves to eat here because he loves the cheese enchiladas. Tons of real cheese, just ooey goodness. Our service was awesome today. Didn't get her name but she is younger. Usually this place suffers in service because they seem to forget about u a lot. Sometimes you have to beg for a refill of chips and salsa but today we had 3! Haha delicious! Eat at your own risk- cockroaches! I haven't had this place in a little while, but use to go a few times a month. I made the executive decision to never return, when i was waiting for my food to come and the waiter brought chips/salsa to the table. While i waited, i noticed the wallpaper moved in the corner of my eye. It was a cockroach, a pretty meaty sized one at that! The waiter brought my food, saw the bug, grabbed it and didn't say anything. I sat there with my plate of food, unable to eat, no remarks from the staff and connected that my food probably had roach traces as well. Delicious! Service was a little spotty at first but it picked up ( I think it was the dinner shift change) Our waitress Zuelema was wonderful. She brought habaneros for me so I could leave crying (in a good mouth on fire way). The prices are very reasonable. They have a basic red salsa and a thick, brown spicy salsa. I must preface this by saying I have been going to their locations for years and have very good memories of this place. Is it the best food? No but it is more authentic than many places you will go in Utah. How about the service? It has gone down in recent years but i will admit that it is nice not having a waiter come around every 2-3 minutes asking if everything is ok and trying to make small talk. That being said, I have had pretty much everything on the menu at one time or another and the portions are generous, I love the flavor, and the price is right. It really isn't a very expensive place to eat and that definitely plays to its strength. read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting his family in SLC. We had a hankering for Mexican food (burritos and enchiladas). First, the phone ordering proved difficult. A request for a vegetarian burrito was met with resistance (just don't add meat, right) however asking for a shrimp burrito ($3.00 extra) was met with ease. Next, when we went to pick up the food, there was an extra charge for chips and salsa which had not been requested. When we informed the waitress, she said that we had in fact ordered them. We decided to just take it and left. When we got home and opened the containers, we found the most ridiculous attempts at burritos I have ever seen. Both the chicken and shrimp burritos were basically chicken/shrimp tossed into small, taco sized tortillas. Unseasoned, on a bed of shredded lettuce. Having spent $25 on three items, my boyfriend immediately returned the food. The same waitress assured us that what we were viewing were in fact, burritos. We were told more than once that was their burrito "way". We did eventually get our money back from the manager. The food we received here was embarrassing and offensive. I liked what another reviewer said ... About how they never get excited to go to cancun cafe even though they are, in general, always excited to eat Mexican food. Even not good Mexican food is good. But that's not really the case here. The good: The chips and salsa are my favorite! The chips are always warm and freshly made. The salsa is delicious...great flavor, tastes fresh, with a little kick, not too chunky...which is how I like my restaurant salsa. The fish tacos are pretty good but the tortillas are always falling apart and disintegrating because the sauce is so runny. The service is always good, always fast, and prices are reasonable. The food is very mediocre. I've had everything on the menu...nothing is really bad but not amazing either. Not memorable. Nothing stands out at all. Why have I had everything on the menu at a place with mediocre food? Because we eat here ALL THE TIME. It's close to home, not a lot of other Mexican food options nearby and there is never a wait. And sometimes, when you just need a quick dinner and you have your kids with you, that's all it takes. read more

After reading a plethora of reviews, and having a hankering for good food. I chose this place for a vendor lunch meeting. I was NOT disappointed in this decision. We were treated with glee from start to finish. Our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable of the menu and specials. Drink orders were taken promptly and delivered rather quick. I got the mango lemonade. Fantastic! I then ordered the Cancun Pequeño. While waiting we had their homemade chips brought out. These were awesome, and in a league of their own. I could have filled up quickly on them. When our food came out, their presentation on the plates were alone, mesmerizing... but the taste blew us all away. Great experience. Great food. This was a delightful dinner. Birthday dinner for me and my BF and his mom. Tres Hombres has been our go to, but we just haven't been thrilled with the food lately. Step in : Cancun Cafe. Fresh! I could taste the love that went into the home made roasted chili salsa and the amazing Chili Rellenos. Dad taught me that a quality Relleno means a quality restaurant. Tamales were a little hard but savory and good flavorful sauce on top. Taco salad was good if a little wet? Not sure why-- if meat (shredded beef), or lettuce. Love flavor of salsa and homemade chips. Great prices and staff. Also, adult beverages available, and although I don't imbibe maybe you do. Overall, I really like this place. I normally would give a place a higher review for good service, but the food had NO taste what-so-ever! I fell like mexican food should be a "party in your mouth"...this was not the case here at the Cancun Cafe. We were there on a Saturday night (7ish) and we were 1 of 3 tables...should have been our first clue, but I enjoy hole in the wall type places. We ordered drinks (Me- Water, unfortunately sans lemon...and hubby- Bud Light bottle, sans frost- it was luke warm, eww!!) We also shared chips, salsa, and an order of Guac. None of which we were impressed with... again no flavor, so we asked for hot sauce, we were given some sort of black bean salsa ?? which also was not spicy... on to the entree. I order tamales...always! It's my way of getting an idea of just how authentic a place really is...The tamales covered in a green chili Mole were not on the list of best tamales...but they also didn't make the worst list. However, the rice and beans that accompanied them brought me to where I give the 1 star review. Terrible and Bland... we will not be returning. read more

The problem with the Cancun is scrimping. The chile verde burrito is a tortilla filled with refried beans topped with a scant spoonful of chile verde. The chicken fajitas are a pile of onions and green peppers with two or three small pieces of chicken. The chicken enchildas are a tortilla some red sauce and cheese. Good luck finding any chicken. I guess if you ask they will show you a picture of a chicken. The idea is that on a big plate of rice, beans, tortillas some cheese and sauce customers are to stupid to notice. read more

When I got into the restaurant I asked for a takeout order of fish tacos or one fish taco the man told me it would take 10 minutes. I noticed 5 people came in and they interim, they were served. They were each served within minutes and I who ordered take out(I needed my food fast... Didn't have much time... Bc I have to go to work.) Found this place last night when trying to decide where to eat. I had the fish tacos, which were amazing, a full talapia (I believe) filet on each taco, and so flavorful. My husband had a large burrito that was fantastic but too big to finish in one meal. The chips were still warm and fresh, and the salsa was very flavorful without being too spicy. The service was fantastic, and our waiter was very nice, friendly and prompt! Followed the meal with their fried ice cream, which was delicious as well. We will definitely be returning. read more

Great chicken chimichanga, order with no guacamole and extra sour cream. I love how crisp and hot it comes to the table. The main reason I go here is because of the chips and salsa, I love it! Warm and fresh, every time. I also like the salsa because it is not spicy hot. I don't recommend the water, tastes horrible, order a drink. The food is always hot and delivered very fast.
